Devon is a dark being who has been given one last chance to survive. All he has to do is convert one human to the dark side.
Lance's whole life has been a struggle, but finally he is on the brink of experiencing success in his career and his love life. Then, Devon sets out to destroy everything good in Lance's life, one by one.
Soon, Lance's world is worse than ever before. Can he sift through the dreams, mind manipulations, and real-life drama in time to prevent all-out catastrophe before it's too late? Or will Devon's last chance turn into a dark success?
A fresh spin on the good versus evil story, "Devon's Last Chance" addresses the issues of moral consequences and the why behind the what, from both inside and outside the astral plane.
This is a short impacting story about how can a good man, with a wonderful life, turn bad - or remain good - by a series of events. It would be hard to review it without spoilers but I'll try. Devon is the evil man; Lance is the hero and the victim; Kim is the girl-friend and Tom is the best-friend. With a few more second characters to make the story work, we see how can what seemed a happy, hard-working man, Lance, turn into a insane dark force. First, I had to tell you that Edward Wolfe didn't left me cliff-hanging, no. The conclusion was there, if Devon couldn't take Lance to the dark side, in that right moment, he would die; if he could, he would live. Lance's life is going to continue, one way or another, in the dark or in the light side, and he does he work and tells us how. I didn't feel he needed to show it to me. Yes, Edward could have done a bigger book, but... what for? Perfect end, for a perfect story. A story to make you think how uncontrollable life is, how a wrong decision can end everything, how you are submitted to forces you can control, and to the others around you. As Sartre used to say: "L'Enfer, c'est les autres." Or 'Hell is other people.' Usually, people take this quotation by its wrong meaning. Sartre didn't want to create a misanthropic society. No. He meant to show us that we are bothered - or not - by what people can think of us, because we ourselves can't have an impartial opinion about ours qualities and defects, our acts and reactions and so on. We need the other, as a mirror, to see ourselves. The more unsure, the more you need the other. And consequently, will love or hate and react according. What Devon do is exactly this. His is the dark force that feeds on destroying good people. He needs this to live. He messes with the mind of an unsure girl, Corinne, and make her thoughts go to a darker side, causing a series of terrible events to occur like a domino to end in disaster. We can accompany these events through many POVs and that makes the story even more interesting. This is fiction, but this happens every single day in many lives. If Lance wasn't at that point, at that right moment, nothing would have happened... If Corinne wasn't unsure and jealous, nothing would've happened... NONETHELESS, there's a light side too... Outnumbered, but working hard. The author has a theory that there might be dark and light forces that work without us seeing and that's why no one can explain why that quiet boy killed a whole school and then killed himself. He seemed so normal. I don't know if I agree with it or not. For me, man is responsible for his own thoughts - not only by their acts - and that is what makes a real different when choosing our paths. Light or dark? This is for us to choose every single day. I do recommend this book.
Not what I expected at all. It starts slow and a little confusing but at 30% I was addicted.
This is insane, it's all about the ripple effect, one action causes a reaction. This explores one interpretation of why and how.
The how is Devon. Devon is like a being, not a human but a temptation; the evil to the story. He looks for people who are content enough that one change can ruin it all.
I loved the quote regarding how if something seems to good to be true it probably is. How Wolfe then interpreted that to mean if your life seems to good to be true, then something is a lie.
Wolfe writes thought provoking stories, they might be short but they are bite sized thoughts and they stay with you for a while.
I nearly cried at one point, I'm a dog person, read it and you'll see why.
For a thought provoking read I suggest a book by Wolfe, I've read two of his so far and each time I come away with logical and deep thought analysis.
I was sucked into the story. It had me wondering what turn of events would happen next. DAMN YOU DEVON! I felt so bad for Lance but at the same time the most interesting part was the fiancé/friend dinner scene. There were a few moments where I blushed or laughed at the sexual innuendos. "This is so good. Have you ever come here before?" "No" he thought to himself, "But I'm going to come here if you don't stop" I love when books can do that for you. My mind wondered a bit with the demon light talk but that's just me. I really liked the story and how it unfolded. It made you think about your actions and how it affects others. I recommend this book. It was a great read.
Review to come....But let me say right now it was awesome!

Holy mother of god! this story kept me going! I was soo hooked! I dont know what to say besides READ THIS FOR YOURSELF!!! This is a story you dont want to miss I dont think I can give a good review without spoilers! Thank you to Mr. Wolfe for this wonderful story! Cant wait to read more of your work!
The story in this novella is a great one. I like the idea of exploring the outside forces that can affect a person's fate . . .and eventually their character. The author has a good mind for a great plot.
Attempting to review without spoilers . . . Some of the story lines in the book were over-explained and others begged for more explanation. Also, there were parts of the book that were confusing. For instance, Lance tells the doctor to not call him by his last name because it makes him think his father just walked into the room . . . but other parts of the book said that he grew up in the foster system. Also, it would have been nice to learn more about exactly what happens with Devon, and what exactly "his side" is. Outside of a few small issues, I was enthralled with the story line and was on edge waiting to see how it would end.
Overall I liked the story and look forward to reading other works by the author.
I liked the idea behind this book, but not the way it was done. In short, there is an unfulfilled potential. To begin with, the actions take place way to fast – they lack development, following each other in a way that seems more the skeleton of a first draft than a final product. What could have been an exploration of how little things on others life can influence in a great deal your own life is, instead, a couple of scenes which seem to have fallen from the sky. The same goes to the characters, especially Devon. The demon is the one setting the plot and making it move, however, he does little besides taking what people already want, and show those images to them, playing with their desires and imagination. I got the feeling that he could be out of the story, and little harm would be done. (With a few arrangements here and there, of course, but it would be easily done.) I received this book in a goodreads giveaway, for which I thank the author.
I first read Wolfe’s short story “When Everything Changed”. I like his interesting and original story lines. “Devon’s Last Chance” is a short novel. It has no filler. Every scene moves the story forward in a compelling way. I found it hard to put down. This type of story intrigues me. How many times can someone get knocked down before they find it hard to get up again? When you’re at your lowest point, you are susceptible to the darkness and Wolfe brings you to that point with the character, Lance. You know Lance doesn’t deserve it but he’s been brought to the precipice. Will he jump and give in to Devon, the dark force waiting to feed on his energy? I had no idea how this story would end. It explores some interesting concepts and is a good read. I highly recommend this book.~
This marvelous story gripped me from the very first page. I read Devon's Last Chance in one sitting because I just had to find out what would happen to the main character. This story is unlike any other book I've read. I don't want to get into the specifics of the plot, because I would hate to spoil the story for anyone, but I will say that I can't recommend this book enough. The characters are quite life-like, and the author does a great job of showing the reader the story from several different perspectives. If you're looking for a unique and thought provoking book, then look no further than Devon's Last Chance. I give this book five very bright stars!
How many times did you ask yourself "Why me?" when everything goes bad in your life? I did it often, and sometimes it's hard to find a good reason even if you are an optimistic or religious person. Devon's Last Chance suggests an original answer, a fight between spiritual beings that manipulate humans like puppets. And what can we do? Read what happened to Lance ...
Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed reading one of Edward Wolf's books, Devon's Last Chance. Unfortunately, due to a nasty and ongoing battle with stage Four Squamous Cell Carcinoma over the past year and a half, I'm slow on posting my review. As always, I find Edward's style and subject matter when writing both interesting and captivating, in that once you start reading his book(s), you don't want to put it down until you have finished!
