Neve has spent her life in the shelter of the Crystal Keep, developing her talent for magic and preparing to inherit from her father the Guardianship of this mysterious world. With this post comes the remarkable magic of the Nexus. But control of the Nexus is an awesome and dangerous responsibility, and to prove that she is capable of manipulating its formidable energies, Neve must journey through the outside world to the home of the Keep's creator. Along the way, she will meet a handsome young sailor whose love and guidance are essential to her survival. And, in this brutal foreign land, she must confront the dark side of the Nexus ... to claim the power that is her birthright.
Well, I enjoyed this sequel to Guardian's Key much more than the first one! Really, I would say that this book works just fine as a standalone since so much of the action takes place years in the future. The plot has a bit more to it than the previous book, too. Unfortunately the setting was a little less intricate. But I definitely enjoyed reading this one a lot more because it doesn't have the same morally terrible problems as the first book. It's not a great read, but it's certainly fast and fun.
I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet also wonderfully foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but also familiar enough to make it believable. I love her humor and her characterization.
It's okay. For sure can't read this book without the first. The first one was unique and better I thought. This one is fairly close though. It's more in line with the high fantasy I normally read. Thus not so unique. Some of this reminds me of ... the Japanese Anime (TOS) Sailor Moon. To just block something on a whim. Not quite as original but interesting. Ironically I bought this book first .. about a month and a half before 9/11 after which I had a book drought from 2002-2019 . A few read not much though. So had no idea until goodreads said Crystal Keep #2. Oh bother. Yeah I spill something on this ages ago. But gotta read the first one first . Glad I did. That was unique. In many ways way too similar to this book.. But liked it just the same.. Hit one spoiler because of the block something on a whim...

One of the two Anne Logston books that I read sometime around 1999/2000 without realising each was a sequel in a different series. Both sequels are about the daughter of the woman who was the main character in the first book.
Reading these four books closely together confirmed that the series are set in the same fantasy setting, with High Lords and High Ladies as rulers of territories, Gates as a way to travel instantaneously anywhere, elves and men living alongside in some parts of the world, and the river Dezarin linking a dozen trade cities across a continent.
Rereading Exile now - rest of the review to follow as I complete the book.
I only made it thirty pages or so before giving up. I liked the premise enough to pull the book off the shelf, but was quickly tired of the very spoiled heroine who couldn't even light a fire and was a spoiled brat on top of it.
I want to give this 2 1/2 stars. It was ok, but nothing special. The main character was rather annoying, almost never learning from her mistakes and was stubborn to a fault. It wasn't a terrible novel, but it wasn't great either. Maybe slightly below average.
