Virginity. It’s not about the hymen. It’s about the heart...
Bloody murder, sinister mystery, unadulterated sex - at just 18, Laura Mallory's life is already saturated with it. And she's about to discover that violence, secrets and pornographic lust are all part of the family tradition.
Raised in elite boarding schools, orphan Laura Mallory has never known her benefactor's identity. At 15 she has a passionate affair with college principal Carl Muller. When he turns up shot dead in the exclusive institute’s swimming pool, Laura is devastated. Two years later, on her 18th birthday, she receives a message from beyond the grave: Her personal college dossier, containing her first clue... a letter from the solicitors who represent her mysterious patron. Attached is a chilling note to her from Muller, stating that he chose to disregard an anonymous ultimatum to discontinue their affair under threat of death. Hot blooded Laura embarks on a perilous adventure to discover the truth. Her quest triggers a chain of dramatic events, unraveling the sordid and tragic past of the mother she never knew, thrusting forbidden love into her path... and giving her a new understanding of the meaning of innocence.
This is fast-paced action. There is a lot of violence. There is sex, but it is not explicit. It is set in Dublin and London and jumps in time between the life of a beautiful, young mother and that of her daughter as a young woman. I liked the very Irish names of some of the characters. Be advised that there are a couple of scenes of torture (don't read the spoiler if you are squeamish) The author loves the word "expansive". This is no literary masterpiece, but it is a quick and entertaining read. The cover art of a woman looking over a fan does not appear in the book. I recommend for when you want an entertaining book that is not too demanding.
Whose story is that exctly..? Laura's or her mother's? Because, 3/4 of the book is in her mother's point of view and the justification seem very flimsy... i hoped for a book more around the heroine...

This is a difficult one to rate. This will not under any circumstances be for everybody. You have to give it your full attention, it's a 'Grown Up' read with a huge amount of complex characters. Its told in a 3rd person narrative and jumps from character to character without warning, which made it confusing (I had to go back sometimes re-read paragraphs) It took awhile to get going, and being honest... i did put it on hold a few times. BUT that being said there was something that kept pulling me back wanting to... NO, NEEDING to finish. Every time i put it down, i couldn't stop thinking about it and i knew i wouldn't be able to move on to another book till this was accomplished.
Its definitely no fairytale, It involves gangs, rape, violence, sex, murder, betrayal, hurt and heartache.
It's not a great read, the execution is poor but the storyline is so compelling and intriguing that for me it was worth the effort and time demanded.
I don't really know how to rate this. I want to give it 5 stars because I love stories that keep you guessing until the very end, but I want to give it 1 star because I never saw the end coming until the very end, and then I was pissed because it doesn't seem like there is a book 2.
