The book I read to research this post was How to Massively Lower Your Utility Bills by Sarah Richards which is an excellent book although somewhat short. This book has some great advice on lowering your household bills. Utility bills are a major headache in any household budget. For every 1o degrees fahrenheit you lower your thermostat you save 5 % on your heating bill. If you use an inkjet printer rather than a laser printer it only uses 10 % of the power and you can network it so it is a shared printer further saving money. It does suggest having your home assessed by a professional on how you can save on energy efficiency further and in many places this is subsidized or free. With things like global warming you are doing your bit for the environment as well as saving on household expenses. In Britain they are bringing out smart meters that tell you in pounds and pence how much power you are using and notify the utility provider via the phone line what the bill should be. This book offers a whole plethora of advice. Most people know they can save money by using fluorescent bulbs and in Britain most bulbs sold meet this requirement. The old fashioned bulbs aren't on the market any more. There is advice like put mulch around your plants to prevent evaporation and use plants that don't require lots of watering especially in areas that don't get much rainfall. Don't have lights on in rooms that aren't in use and only have minimal heating and then only when it is extremely cold outside. Natural gas and oil is preferable to electric heating as it is much cheaper. I really enjoyed reading this book and hope this has given you some idea what it is like. I do wholeheartedly recommend it and my only complaint is it wasn't longer. I can speed read so like long books.
