Mark Landau (Aldanov) was born in Kiev in the family of a rich Jewish industrialist. He graduated the physical-mathematical and law departments of Kiev University. He published serious research papers in chemistry. In 1919 he emigrated to France. During 1922-1924 he lived in Berlin and during 1941-1946, in the United States.
Ivan Bunin, the first Russian writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, nominated Aldanov for Nobel Prize a total of six times - in 1938, 1939, 1947, 1948, 1949, and 1950.

If can get English translation, get it. Both informative and highly entertaining. The "portraits" of XIXth century notables are good, but it's the XXth ones that are fascinating-Aldanov wrote his biographical sketches of Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, Gandhi in late 20's-early 30's, when their legacy was nowhere near being set.

"В своей злобной и несправедливой книге «Россия в 1839 году» маркиз Кюстин говорит, что русские люди совершенно напрасно ставят французам в упрек зверства Французской революции. У нас, замечает он, эти зверства совершались опьяненным, обезумевшим народом в течение короткого промежутка времени. А у них без всякой революции каждый день происходят всевозможные зверства, о которых никто не пишет, не говорит и не думает. Когда в России произойдет революция, сказал сто лет тому назад Кюстин, это будет нечто ни с чем вообще не сравнимое. «Методическая, холодная и упорная жестокость мужика» даст себя знать, и по всей русской земле, от Смоленска до Иркутска, начнутся небывалая резня и небывалый грабеж. «Все темно в будущем человечества, — писал маркиз Кюстин, — но одно совершенно достоверно: мир будет свидетелем очень страшных сцен, которые явит перед ним эта отмеченная судьбою нация».

This is a quite random collection of different essays by Марк Алданов about various historical persons or events. He wrote a lot of "portraits," but this collection includes only some of them -- you can find much more of them on the Internet, to fit every taste, and he is a great master of those. The essays are elaborate, observant, and rich in details, with beautiful language, very engaging and, simultaneously, meticulous in terms of historic truth -- as always in Aldanov.
However, I understood that, as much as I appreciate Aldanov, I personally do not like this genre of isolated "portraits," even when I am interested in and immerged into this particular epoch/set of problems already.
It concerns even such "universal" personalities as Hitler and Stalin, for example, although it was very curious to see what Aldanov thought about them. His depth of understanding these "personalities" is surprising, sometimes even striking, considering that he wrote their "portraits" not after their deaths but almost at the very beginning of their horrific "carriers," when they even did not evolve properly into such tyrants and dictators as we know them now.
Nevertheless, Aldanov already saw their rotten souls in so many details that are inapproachable even for many modern researchers. You read all this about Hitler, keeping in mind Holocaust, and World War Two, and concentration camps, and fascism, and racism, and nazism, and everything, and nod in agreement, and then -- boom! -- the essays ends with "Какой социализм будет осуществлять Гитлер, если достигнет настоящей власти, я сказать не берусь. Думаю, что никакого социализма осуществлять не будет: вычеркнуть несколько страниц из дешевой брошюры не так уж трудно — хватит и оставшихся." And you realize then that it was written somewhere in the early 1930s or even in the late 1920s! Then he describes in all the details the crooked carrier of Stalin -- and you cannot believe that this was written during his, Stalin's, lifetime, rather than now, in the 21st century, with all available documents, archives, and open borders between countries. However, you read this in the end: "То, что происходит сейчас в России, это борьба, борьба личная, почти такая борьба, какая ведется в животном царстве. (...) Зиновьев прежде со Сталиным громил Троцкого, теперь он с Троцким громит Сталина, — чья классовая подоплека изменилась? Сам Сталин был (при Ленине) противником «новой экономической политики». Наша печать не без причины теряется в догадках: кто из большевистских вождей левее, кто правее? (Бухарин, идущий ныне со Сталиным, прежде считался самым левым) и не опираются ли левые вожди на правые массы? (что, в самом деле, граничило бы с чудом). (...) Пожелаем же им всем того, чего они желают друг другу. Я не знаю, кто из них будет смеяться последний. Самыми последними посмеемся мы. Меня не слишком утешает эта перспектива последнего смеха на развалинах. Сказано, однако, в гениальной книге: «Время плакать и время смеяться... Время разбрасывать камни и время собирать камни... Время раздирать и время сшивать... Время любить и время ненавидеть...» -- and you can see that it was written in the middle of the 1920s. Amazing! Aldanov regularly startles the reader with this inimitable impression of touching the History itself, from inside.
The most interesting for me were essays "Большая Лубянка," "Уинстон Черчилль," and "Пилсудский," especially the latter. Unfortunately, I cannot find the essay "Пилсудский" in text format on the Internet, and it's a shame, because I really wanted to re-read this one essay more thoroughly. It was fascinating not only because of the personality of Пилсудский, but, in the first place, because of multiple intersections with our today's situation in Ukraine and its whole struggle over independence in the historical context.
Раздраженный и пристрастный, хоть и очень умный человек, маркиз Кюстин приехал в Россию искать зла — и зло нашел. Мысли этого русофоба через сто лет повторил (почти буквально) Максим Горький. Прослушал за неделю по дороге на работу и обратно. Стало интересно найти и ознакомиться с героями очерков в отдельных биографиях.

"Портреты" в лицах Черчилля, Гитлера, Сталина и Пилсудского в первую очередь очень занимательная книга.
Что касается самих биографических фактов из жизней великих здесь возможно слишком больше описана обстановка вокруг героев книги нежели о них самых. Хотя я понимаю и полностью оправдываю замысел автора, но всё таки хотелось бы увидеть в книге немного больше фактов о жизни самих действующих лиц.
Что касается объективности, то мне кажется, что людей способных так писать как Марк Алданов (Марк Ландау) найти бывает невероятно трудно.
И ещё очень понравился сам стиль написания в который автор очень органично смешал художественный, автобиографический, повествовательный и публицистический жанр - получилось очень мощно!

Excellent portraits of different objects and people. Can be read in bits, and still very enjoyable. While I am not a huge fan of "popularizing" things (eg, music, books) for the "masses", Aldanov does a great job of de-scientifying history and making it a novel-like reading. Highly recommend. Not sure if it's been translated into English - I read it in Russian.

a fascinating collection of post wwi essays on various historical characters, from pilsudki or clemenseau to josephine bonaparte and ghandi. they're a mix of large and tiny historical details, respectful, hilarious, whiplash smart, and fantastically written. i need to check out his larger historical prose; i've bounced off it when i was thirteen, but, well, i was thirteen.
