ಅಬ್ಬಬ್ಬಾ.. ಎಂತಹ ರೋಚಕ ಅನುಭವ !
ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸುವಾಗ ಯಾವುದೋ ಒಂದು ಸುಂದರ ಲೋಕದೊಳಗೆ ಸಂಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಆಗು ಹೋಗುಗಳಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿ, ಬಹು ಹತ್ತಿರದಿಂದ ಕಥೆಯ ಜೀವಿಸಿ, ಕೊನೆಯಲಿ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಒಸರಿ, ಆ ಫ್ಯಾಂಟಸಿ ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಿಂದ ಹೊರ ಬಂದಂತಹ ಅನೂಹ್ಯ,ಅಪರೂಪದ ಅನುಭವ ! Such a lively Experience !
ದುರ್ಗದ ಧೀಮಂತ ಪಾಳೆಯಗಾರ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕರ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಮುಖಾಂತರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಉಣಬಳಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬುದು ತರಾಸು ಅವರ ಕನಸಾಗಿತ್ತಂತೆ , ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಅರೋಗ್ಯ ಹದಗೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೂ, ಹಠದಿಂದ, ಕೇವಲ ೪.೫ ತಿಂಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ೬೫೦+ ಪುಟಗಳ ಮೇರು ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿದರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೂ 'ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ' ಕನ್ನಡದ ಕ್ಲಾಸಿಕ್ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗ್ರ ಪಂಕ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾರಾಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.
ಹೈದರ್ ಅಲಿಯ ಸೇನೆಗೆ ಎರಡು ವರುಷ ಸವಾಲಾಗಿ ನಿಂತು,ಹಿಮ್ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಸದ ಧೀರ ನಾಯಕ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕ ! ಸಣ್ಣ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೇರಿ, ದುರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಆಳಿ, ಒಳಗೊಳಗೇ ನಡೆದ ಪಿತೂರಿಗಳ ಸುಳಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕುವ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಹಲವು ಮುಖಗಳನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯದ್ಭುತವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಲೇಖಕರು. ರಕ್ತ ಕುದಿಸುವ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಿಡಿಲ ಭಾಷೆಯಿಂದ,ಮಿಂಚಿನ ಶೈಲಿಯಿಂದ - ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೇರು ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಒಮ್ಮೊಮ್ಮೆ ರಕ್ತ ಕುದಿದು, ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಾಡ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಉಕ್ಕಿ ಹರಿದು, ಮಗದೊಮ್ಮೆ ಅವಡುಗಚ್ಚಿ , ಕಥೆಯೊಳಗೆ ನಾವೂ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ತರಾಸು ರಿಗೆ ಹೃತ್ಪೂರ್ವಕ ನಮನ. ಯುದ್ಧದ ಭೀಕರತೆ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು. ಹೊರಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುವಿಗೆ ಅಭೇದ್ಯ ವಾದ ಕೋಟೆ, ಒಳಗಿನ ಜಂತುಗಳಿಂದ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ವಶವಾಯಿತು ಎಂಬುದು ವಿಷಾದನೀಯ.
ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಕಳೆದ ಜನವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದಾಗ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಗೈಡ್ , ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ಕಳ್ಳಿ ನರಸಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಪೀತೂರಿಗೆ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಬಲಿಯಾಯಿತು ಎಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ , ಅವರು ದ್ರೋಹ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಸತ್ಯ ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಬಂತು (ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕುರಿತು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ).
ದುರ್ಗದ ಕುರಿತು ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ೮ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯಿದೆ, ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯೂ ಇದೆ - ದುರ್ಗ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟೂ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿದೆ!
ಹಾ , ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮಾತು - ಮದಕರಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯದ ನಂತರ ಪರಶು ನಾಯಕರ ಮಾತು - "ಅಣ್ಣ... ಅಣ್ಣಾ . ಮದಕರೇಣ್ಣಾ" - ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಗುನುಗುಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಸುಧಾರಿಸಲು ಕೆಲ ದಿನಗಳು ಬೇಕಾಗಬಹುದು !

ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಕಳೆದ ಜನವರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಭೇಟಿ ನೀಡಿದಾಗ, ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಗೈಡ್ , ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ಕಳ್ಳಿ ನರಸಪ್ಪ ಅವರ ಪೀತೂರಿಗೆ ದುರ್ಗಾ ಬಲಿಯಾಯಿತು ಎಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ , ಅವರು ದ್ರೋಹ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಸತ್ಯ ಅರಿವಿಗೆ ಬಂತು (ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕುರಿತು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ).
ದುರ್ಗದ ಕುರಿತು ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಬರೆದಿರುವ ೮ ಕೃತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯಿದೆ, ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯೂ ಇದೆ - ದುರ್ಗ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟೂ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿದೆ!
ಹಾ , ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮಾತು - ಮದಕರಿಯ ಅಂತ್ಯದ ನಂತರ ಪರಶು ನಾಯಕರ ಮಾತು - "ಅಣ್ಣ... ಅಣ್ಣಾ . ಮದಕರೇಣ್ಣಾ" - ಕಿವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಗುನುಗುಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಸುಧಾರಿಸಲು ಕೆಲ ದಿನಗಳು ಬೇಕಾಗಬಹುದು !

Reading a Kannada book after a long time, I realised how different it is from English literature, whether in terms of prose or emotions. An excellent Novel written by Ta Ra Su filled with politics, war and every type of emotion imaginable.
The book is about the life and reign of Madakari Nayaka, the rule of Chitradura and his clash with Hyder Ali. An important historical character, he has been portrayed well, from his naive childhood to his ascension to the throne and his efforts to protect his kingdom both through warfare as well as politics.
This being a character driven book, Contains a wide array of characters, all unique and well written. As the characters live their lives, battling conflict, political struggle, war, hate, love and fear the history of Chitradurga is laid bare to the reader making him feel every emotion that the characters feel. Finely written characters and excellent narration make it a delightful read.
A special mention is needed of the elite female army unit in the book. Something rare in the history of empires, be it any country. It is shown how they fought for the protection of their motherland, just like the men.
Anyone who can read Kannada and loves history must read this book.
The final words in the book resonates the anguish of the people very well.
The cries of the people was consumed by the night
and it never dawned again.

ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗವನ್ನು 211 ವರ್ಷ ಪಾಳಯಗಾರರಾಗಿ ಆಳಿದ ಎರಡು ಸಂತತಿಗಳೆಂದರೆ "ಮತ್ತಿ" ಸಂತತಿ ಮತ್ತು"ಬಿಳಿಚೋಡು" ಸಂತತಿ. ಬಿಳಿಚೋಡು ಸಂತತಿಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಕೊಂಡಿಯೇ "ಕಡೇ ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕ". ಈತ ವೀರನೆಂಬದು ಗೊತ್ತು. ಆ ವೀರತ್ವವನ್ನು ಅಕ್ಷರಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭೂತಪೂರ್ವವಾಗಿ ಸೆರೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ತರಾಸು.
ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಮರು-ಓದು. ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಾರಿ ಓದಿದರೂ ಆ ವೈಭವ ಮರೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸರ್ವಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಖಂಡಿತ ಒಂದು. ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕನ downfall ಅನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟು ನಾಟಕೀಯವಾಗಿ, ಸಿನಿಮಯವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನುವಷ್ಟು ಅಮೋಘವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಓದುಗರು, ಒಂದು ಬೃಹತ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡುವದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು.
ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮಾತು, ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿವರಗಳು ವಾಸ್ತವ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ದೂರ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಮರೆಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಷ್ಟೇ ಗೆದ್ದಿದೆ.
ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಮರು-ಓದು. ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಾರಿ ಓದಿದರೂ ಆ ವೈಭವ ಮರೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸರ್ವಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಖಂಡಿತ ಒಂದು. ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕನ downfall ಅನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟು ನಾಟಕೀಯವಾಗಿ, ಸಿನಿಮಯವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನುವಷ್ಟು ಅಮೋಘವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಆರಂಭಿಕ ಓದುಗರು, ಒಂದು ಬೃಹತ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಶುರು ಮಾಡುವದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು.
ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಮಾತು, ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿವರಗಳು ವಾಸ್ತವ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ದೂರ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ನೈಜತೆಯನ್ನು ಮರೆಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಾಗಷ್ಟೇ ಗೆದ್ದಿದೆ.

Ta Ra Su is the real son of lord saraswathi. Oh god, such a superb book. lot many lessons learnt from the book. specially, when the king was given a pot of blood to wash his face to make his mind ready for any kind of bloodbath.

"ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳು ಇನ್ನೂ ಆರಿಲ್ಲ" ಎಂದರೂ ನೀವು ನಂಬಬೇಕು. ದುರ್ಗ ಸರಣಿಯ ಏಳು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಕಲಶದಂತಿರುವ ಎಂಟನೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ ಓದಿದವರಿಗೂ ಹೀಗೆ ಆಗುತ್ತದೆ. ೬೫೦+ ಪುಟಗಳಷ್ಟು ಸಮೃದ್ಧವಾದ ಶ್ರೀಮಂತವಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಹೆಣೆಯುವಿಕೆ, ಓದುಗನನ್ನು ಇಂಚಿಂಚಿಗೂ ತಲುಪುವ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆ ತರಾಸುರವರಿಗೆ ದೈವದತ್ತವಾಗಿ ಒಲಿದ ಕಲೆ ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಲ್ಲ. ಎರಡೂವರೆ ದಶಕಗಳ ಕನಸನ್ನು ಸಾಕಾರಗೊಳಿಸಲೆಂಬಂತೆ ಕಂಬನಿಯ ಕುಯಿಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊಲೆ, ರಕ್ತರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಳವಾಯಿಯೊಬ್ಬನ ಕ್ರೌರ್ಯ, ತಿರುಗುಬಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇಡು, ಹೊಸಹಗಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಸಕನಸುಗಳು, ವಿಜಯೋಯ್ಸವದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ರಾಜ್ಯದಾಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಂಹಾಸನದ ಮೋಹ, ಕಸ್ತೂರಿ ಕಂಕಣದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಯತ್ತು ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿ, ಹದವಾಗಿ ಬೆರೆಸಿ ಓದಿಸಿದ ಲೇಖಕರು ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪ್ರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಔತಣವನ್ನೇ ಏರ್ಪಡಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತರಾಸು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಗದ್ಯಶಿಲ್ಪಿ!!!
ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಆರಂಭದಂತೆಯೇ ಇಲ್ಲೂ ಸಹ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಆರಂಭ ಅರಸನ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ಮೊದಲ್ಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. (ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವೃತ್ತಾಂತ ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಓದುಗ ಈ ಮುಂಚಿನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿರಬೇಕು. ಇಲ್ಲವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಶಃ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಮತ್ತು ನಡುನಡುವೆ ಬರುವ ಕೆಲವು ದೃಶ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ರಿಲೇಟ್ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳವುದು ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗಬಹುದು). ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕರ ಮರಣಾನಂತರ ಅವರ ಪುತ್ರ ಕಸ್ತೂರಿನಾಯಕರಿಗೆ ಅರಸುಪಟ್ಟ ಲಭಿಸಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಂತಾನವಿರದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಮುಂದಿನ ರಾಜನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಪುತ್ರ ವಿಯೋಗವಾದ ಓಬವ್ವನಾಗತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅರಮನೆಯ ಆಡಳಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅರಸನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದ ತಾರತಮ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಗೆಹರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನವೋದಯದ ಬೆಳಕು ಮೂಡಿಸಲು ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರ ಮಗನಾದ ಮದಕರಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಸ ಅರಸನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿಶ್ಚಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪಟ್ಟಾಭಿಷೇಕವೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಶುರುವಾಗುವುದು "ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ".
ಇದೊಂದು ಸಾರ್ಥಕ ಓದಿನ ನಂತರ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗವೆಂದರೇ ಕೇವಲ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ರಾಶಿ ರಾಶಿ ಕಥೆಗಳಿವೆ, ತ್ಯಾಗ ಬಲಿದಾನಗಳಿವೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾವು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಂತೆ ಮತ್ತೆಲ್ಲೋ ಕೇಳಿದಂತೆ ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕರ ಅಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಚಿತ್ರ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನದ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಅದೊಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಪಾತ್ರದ ಪರಕಾಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಓದುಗ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕನ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಏಟನ್ನು, ಬಿದ್ದ ಹನಿ ಹನಿ ರಕ್ತವನ್ನು, ಅಸಹಾಯಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಅಂತಃಕರಣ ಓದುಗ ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ರಕ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಡೆದ ಯೋಧನಂತೆ ನಿಂತಂತೆ ಓದುಗ ಕೂಡ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮದಕರಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪರಿಘಾಯುಧ ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. "ಉತ್ಸವಾಂಬೆಗೆ ಜಯವಾಗಲಿ" ಎಂದ ಘೋಷ ಕೂಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಯಾಕೆ ಎಂಬ ಉತ್ತರ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
ಈ ಎಂಟು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ಪಯಣ. ಮತ್ತಿ ತಿಮ್ಮಣ್ಣನಾಯಕರ ದುರ್ಗದ ಗತಿ ಮುಂದೇನು ಎಂಬ ಕುತೂಹಲ, ಪುಸ್ತಕದಿಂದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸ ತಿರುವು, ಹೊಸ ಅರಸ, ಹೊಸ ತಂತ್ರ ಕುತಂತ್ರ, ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ರಸವತ್ತಾದ ಭಾಷಾ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ. ಹೀಗೆ ದುರ್ಗ ಸರಣಿಯ ಕುರಿತು ದಿನವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಬರೆಯಬಹುದು.
ತ ರಾ ಸುಬ್ಬರಾಯರ ಚರಣಗಳಿಗೆ ನಮಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ! ನೀವೂ ಸಹ ಓದಿ, ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಒದಿದ್ದರೇ ನನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ.

ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಕಥೆ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲೇ ಬೇಕು. ಜಾನುಕಲ್ಲಿ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ದುರ್ಗವನ್ನಾಳಿದ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕನ ಕಥೆ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದವರೇ ಆದ ತರಾಸು ರವರಿಗಿಂತ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಇಷ್ಟು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.
ಹೊರಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಒಳಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುಗಳೇ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗದ ನಾಯಕನ ಸೋಲಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಇವತ್ತಿನ ದೇಶದ ನಾಯಕರುಗಳಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಪಾಠ ವಾಗಬಹುದು.
ಹೊರಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಒಳಗಿನ ಶತ್ರುಗಳೇ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುರ್ಗದ ನಾಯಕನ ಸೋಲಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಇವತ್ತಿನ ದೇಶದ ನಾಯಕರುಗಳಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಪಾಠ ವಾಗಬಹುದು.

Must read for all the history buffs
I was introduced to this book very late. But, Better late than never. This book can be easily considered as the MAGNUM OPUS book on the life and history of Madakarinayaka and his glorious and ferocious ruling of the state Chitradurga, popularly known as Durga.
The effort and the details that the author went on to create this book is visible in every chapter. Minute details like ranging from the Doors of the castle, to the battle strategy, the politics being involved in that, the royal proceedings, the loyal followers of the king, and the people who betrayed the king, etc.. etc.. is exceptionally written. Sad part was, when this book was awarded the Kendra Sahitya Academy in the year 1985, the author was not alive to receive it personally. It was awarded posthumously to his wife.
We all have heard somewhat brief details about the king called MADAKARINAYAKA. This book by the author Ta.Ra.Su is a detailed account, which, by far the best described book about the greatness of this ruler. The way Madakarinayaka and his epic battle with the crooked ruler Hyder Ali is described in this book is like a motion picture. The climax battle itself would cover almost half of the book. Now, one can easily assume the exhaustive picturization of the battle.
All other characters from the history has been portrayed very neatly. The first Minister of Madakarinayaka, Kalli Narasappayya and his deeds (or misdeeds) to save the kingdom is a debatable topic though. As author himself puts a disclaimer about this character. This minister who was portrayed as backstabbing the king at the later stage of his life is the recorded event, but, what author had researched about him proves otherwise. Anyways, its part of the history now.
The real crux of the novel is the daredevil acts of the king Madakarinayaka and his ever loyal followers. His younger brother Parashurama Nayaka who took the role of the Minister quite lately, proved as good as his predecessor. Other characters like Madakarinayaka's Maternal parents will add a feel good factor in the book. Author has also shown the personal life of Madakarinayaka and his 3 wives and a personal maid with whom he had shared his love affairs. They play a crucial role in shaping up the character of the king.
All said and done. Why this book is a must read? It is due to the sheer information of the King Madakarinayaka, which you won't find in any other book or you might have to depend on numerous books. Though the book ends on a tragic note by the fall of Chitradurga's empire and the heart wrenching death of the king Madakarinayaka, one can find a true inspiration from this King on how to be loyal to your homeland and your followers in the midst of numerous challenges and betrayals. I strongly recommend this book to be read by each and every Kannadiga.
I was introduced to this book very late. But, Better late than never. This book can be easily considered as the MAGNUM OPUS book on the life and history of Madakarinayaka and his glorious and ferocious ruling of the state Chitradurga, popularly known as Durga.
The effort and the details that the author went on to create this book is visible in every chapter. Minute details like ranging from the Doors of the castle, to the battle strategy, the politics being involved in that, the royal proceedings, the loyal followers of the king, and the people who betrayed the king, etc.. etc.. is exceptionally written. Sad part was, when this book was awarded the Kendra Sahitya Academy in the year 1985, the author was not alive to receive it personally. It was awarded posthumously to his wife.
We all have heard somewhat brief details about the king called MADAKARINAYAKA. This book by the author Ta.Ra.Su is a detailed account, which, by far the best described book about the greatness of this ruler. The way Madakarinayaka and his epic battle with the crooked ruler Hyder Ali is described in this book is like a motion picture. The climax battle itself would cover almost half of the book. Now, one can easily assume the exhaustive picturization of the battle.
All other characters from the history has been portrayed very neatly. The first Minister of Madakarinayaka, Kalli Narasappayya and his deeds (or misdeeds) to save the kingdom is a debatable topic though. As author himself puts a disclaimer about this character. This minister who was portrayed as backstabbing the king at the later stage of his life is the recorded event, but, what author had researched about him proves otherwise. Anyways, its part of the history now.
The real crux of the novel is the daredevil acts of the king Madakarinayaka and his ever loyal followers. His younger brother Parashurama Nayaka who took the role of the Minister quite lately, proved as good as his predecessor. Other characters like Madakarinayaka's Maternal parents will add a feel good factor in the book. Author has also shown the personal life of Madakarinayaka and his 3 wives and a personal maid with whom he had shared his love affairs. They play a crucial role in shaping up the character of the king.

ನಾನು ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟಪಟ್ಟು ಓದ್ಲೇಬೇಕು ಅಂತ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 'ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನ' ಒಂದು. ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಮೊದಲ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಓದೂ ಹೌದು. ಬಹಳವೇ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಯ್ತು, ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಾಳಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿಯಿತು, ಬಹಳ ಕಾಡಿತು ಅಂತ ಅನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗಗದ ಗತವೈಭವದ, ರೋಚಕ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ, ನಮ್ಮವರ ತ್ಯಾಗದ ಮತ್ತು ಆದರ್ಶಗಳ ಗುಂಗಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನ ಕಳೆದೆ. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ, ಇನ್ನೆಷ್ಟೋ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ಓದಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿತು ಕೂಡ. ಅಂತೆಯೆ ನಾನು ಲೇಖಕರೇ ಬರೆದ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದ ಕುರಿತಾದ ಸಾಲುಸಾಲು ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಸರಣಿಯನ್ನ ಕೊಂಡು ಓದಿದೆ!
ಇನ್ನು ಈ ಮಹೋನ್ನತ ಕೃತಿಯ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಬರುವುದಾದರೆ ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಗಳು, ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳು, ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಗಳು ಹರಿದುಬಂದಿವೆ. ಆ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠತೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ, ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಆನೆಯ ಮೇಲಿರಿಸಿ ಮೆರವಣಿಗೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಗೌರವಿಸಿರಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ! ಇಂತಹ ನೂರಾರು ಅನಿಸಿಕೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಂದೂ ಒಂದು ಅಷ್ಟೇ! ದುರ್ಗದ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲೇ ಒಂದು ಬಹುಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಘಟ್ಟದ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಹೇಳುವ ಮೇರು ಕೃತಿ ಇದು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದೊಂದು ಉನ್ನತ ಕೃತಿ. ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಇದನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಓದಲೇ ಬೇಕೆನ್ನುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಮತ್ತು ಆಶಯ!

"ಅಣ್ಣಾ... ಅಣ್ಣಾ ... ಮದಕೆರಣ್ಣ .." ಆ ಕೂಗನ್ನೂ ನುಂಗಿ ದುರ್ಗವನ್ನೂ ಕತ್ತಲಾವರಿಸಿತು. ಕತ್ತಲಾಯಿತು. ಮತ್ತೆ ಹಗಲಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. " ಒಂದು ವಾರದಿಂದ ದುರ್ಗದ ಬೀದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ , ಕೋಟೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದು , ತಿರುಗಾಡಿ , ಬತೆರಿಗಳ್ಳನ್ನ ಹತ್ತಿ , ಕೆಳಗಿಳಿದು , ಕಣ್ಣು ಬಿಟ್ಟಾಗ ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆ , ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆ, ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತಲೆ ಕೆಳಗಿತ್ತು. ಅಬ್ಬಾ ಎನ್ನುವಂಥ ಅನುಭವ. ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ಬಾರಿಯೂ ಹೋಗಿಲ್ಲ ,YouTube ನಲ್ಲೆ ಕಥೆ ಓದುತ್ತ ಕೋಟೆಯ ವಿಡಿಯೋ ಗಳ್ಳನ್ನ ನೋಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಈಗ ಇಷ್ಟು ದಿನ ದುರ್ಗದ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಜನಗಳ , ಕಿಕ್ಕಿರಿದು ಮಾಡುತಿದ್ದ ಶಬ್ದಗಳ ಸಮುದ್ರದ ನಡುವೆ ಇದ್ದು , ಈಗ ನಿರ್ಜನ , ನಿಶಬ್ಧ . ಇನ್ನೇನೂ ಉಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ . ಹೊರಬರಲು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದಿನವೇ ಬೇಕಾಗಬಹುದು. ತರಾಸು ಅವರ ನನ್ನ ಮೊದಲನೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ . ಇದು ಮುಂದೆ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಅಂತ ಕೆಳಪಟ್ಟೆ, ಆದರೆ ಅದೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದು ಸತ್ಯ . ದುರ್ಗವೆಂದರೆ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕ , ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕನೆಂದರೆ ದುರ್ಗ .One of the most fascinating Novel in Kannada .

If I were to make a list of top few novels I have ever read, this will surely figure in that list!!! And I have read 100s of novels so far ... Ta.ra.su beautifully builds the Madakari Nayaka character ... You fall in love in that character! At the end I was actually sad when he died ... This is a must read book!

Fantastic historical story. I have seen Chitradurga twice before reading this book but only after reading this book I saw the real Chitradurga...
As somebody already mentioned, Ta Ra Su is really blessed by Saraswathi.

Better late than Never!
This is an incredible book that had personally moved my thoughts.
Ta.Ra.Su a celebrated writer, was very much successful in controlling my feelings as I flipped through each pages of this masterpiece. This book clearly mentions
the ups and downs, personal, not so personal, political, non- political, war & peace, so on & so forth - every minute details of the ruler Madakari Nayaka
King Madakari Nayaka was always described as an epitome of a Man, and well this book clearly explains it with the reason. Having been a adapted son with no
background of royal blood running through his veins, he make us believe that - if you good at something, just put your heart and soul into it
and the rest will follow you.
Every character in this book will haunt you in a good way even after you close this book for the day. Each minute details of everything be it a person character,
scene of the palace, their clothes, their expression every possible things have been meticulously explained.
This book ends with a sad note, and keeps you occupied even after the days you have completed, my personal opinion is to never miss an opportunity to read this
gem at-least once in this lifetime!

This is one of the best historical novel that i have read. Ta Ra Su has described each scene with such an exceptional detail that you feel like being there and experiencing everything yourself.
His description of Madakari Nayaka, his mother, his brother Parashurama Nayaka, his minister Kalli Narasappayya, Madakari Nayaka's nemesis Hyder Ali, his supporters like Deewan Poornaiah is so good that you can actually empathise with these characters.
Some chapters like the last one where Madakari Nayaka was betrayed by his own soldiers that led to the demise of Chitradurga is very emotional and i was forced to cry.
All in all, a very good book from a great author.

A book which is about the History, ends usually in tragedy and this one is no different. The language is awesome, the long sentences and the way which it is written engrosses you completely.
Indeed, we are transported back to the era of Veera Madakari Nayaka and the great fort of Chitradurga. In our school syllabus, we had only a single chapter related to this which is "Onake Obavva". It is an irony that we are not taught more about him and the entire history.
How others deceive him makes you angry and feel painful, how even the enemy leader praises his bravery and skill makes proud about how great a warrior he was.
There are many aspects which we can get from this book such as co-existence of people of different religions in harmony, patriotism, how a simple lie can change the mind of the people and make them go against their own king and join hands with the enemy, how an honest man's honesty goes in vain.
Want to read this again and also want to read this in the fort of Chitradurga to get fully transported. Hope so I get a chance.

An awesome and very Interesting novel even though most of all Kannadigas knows the ending of Madakari Nayaka........Ta Ra Su’s research on subject makes this novel more valuable

There is no doubt Durgastamana is not the only one of a fascinating historical novel but one of a fascinating novel in the Kannada. I think the novel raises the whole question of our attitude towards history and interpretation of history. Ta.Ra.Su gave a new dimension to look at Chitradurga.

ಇದು ಕೇವಲ ದುರ್ಗದ ಅಸ್ತಮಾನದ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೇವಲ ನಾಯಕನಾದ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲ. ಇತಿಹಾಸ ಪುರುಷರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕೇವಲ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು ಅಥವಾ ಕೇವಲ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ ಕೃತಿ ಅಂತೂ ಅಲ್ಲವೇ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಆದಷ್ಟು ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹತ್ತಿರವಾಗಿರುವ ಕಥೆ. ಇದು ಬಹಳ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಬರೆದಂತಹ ಕಥೆ.
ಏನು ತಿಳಿಯದ 12 ವರ್ಷದ ಬಾಲಕನಿಗೆ ರಾಜ ಪದವಿ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಕಥೆ. ತಪ್ಪು ಮಾಡಿದವರು ಮತ್ತು ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ರಕ್ತದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕನಿಕರ/ಜಿಗುಪ್ಸೆ ಹೋಗಲು ಆತನಿಗೆ ಮುಖ ತೊಳೆಯಲು ರಕ್ತವನ್ನೇ ನೀಡಿದ ಕಥೆ. ಮನದ ಕೋಪ ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ತನ್ನ ಅಂತಃಪುರದೊಳಗೆ ಬಂದಿಯಾದ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಕಥೆ. ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಹುಚ್ಚುಹಿಡಿದ ರಾಜ ಎಂದು ಮಾತನಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದ ಕಥೆ. ಮದಕರಿ ಎಂದರೆ ವೈರಿಗಳ ರಕ್ತದ ಹೊಳೆ ಹರಿಸಿದ ಗಂಡುಗಲಿ ಎನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಹುಚ್ಚಿನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಜನ ಮರೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಪಣತೊಟ್ಟ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಕಥೆ.
ದುರ್ಗ ಕ್ಕಿಂತ ದೊಡ್ಡವರು ಯಾರು ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಮಗನನ್ನು ದೂರ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ನರಸಪ್ಪ ನಾಯಕರ ಕಥೆ. ಜಿದ್ದಿನ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯ ನವಾಬ ಹೈದರಾಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆರು ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಅತ್ತೆ ಕಡೆ ಮೂರು ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಇತ್ತಕಡೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮರಾಠ ರಂತಹ ಬಲಾಡ್ಯ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಹೊಂದಿದವರ ನಡುವೆ. ಅಷ್ಟೇನು ದೊಡ್ಡದಲ್ಲದ ಸೈನ್ಯ ವಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೋಟೆಯ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಹಾಗೂ ವೀರತನದಿಂದ ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಹೆಗಲಿಗೆ ಹೆಗಲು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಹೋರಾಡಿದ ದುರ್ಗದ ಸೈನಿಕರ ಕಥೆ.
ಶತ್ರು ಸೈನ್ಯ ದೊಳಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ನುಗ್ಗಿ ಆ ಗುಂಪಿನ ನಾಯಕನ ರುಂಡ ಕಡಿದು ತಂದ ವೀರಯೋಧ ಗುದಗತ್ತಿಯ ಕಥೆ. ದುರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಿದ ರಣದುರ್ಗಿ ಓಬವ್ವನ ಕಥೆ. ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯ ಸೇನೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಸೇಡನ್ನು ತನ್ನದೇ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಖಾಸಾ ಬೇಡ ಪಡೆಯ ಕಥೆ.
ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಎಂದು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಕರೆದಾಗ ಯಾರನ್ನು ಕರೆದದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಅತ್ತಿತ್ತ ಹುಡುಕಿ ನೋಡುವಂತಹ ದುಸ್ಥಿತಿ ನಮಗೆ ಬರಬಾರದು ಎಂಬುದಷ್ಟೇ ನಾವು ಬಯಸುವ ಸಾಧನೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕನ ಕಥೆ.
ಜಿದ್ದಿಗೆ ನಿಂತು ಈ ದುರ್ಗ ನಮ್ಮದಾಗಬೇಕು, ಇಲ್ಲಾ ನಮ್ಮ ಗೋರಿಯಾಗಬೇಕು. ಎಂದು ಕಾಯುತ್ತಾ ಕುಳಿತ ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯ ಕಥೆ.
ಕೋಟೆಯ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮವರ ಹೆಣಗಳ ಕೋಟೆಯೇ ಬಿದ್ದರೂ ಸರಿಯೇ, ಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಡಬಾರದು. ಸ್ವರ್ಗಕ್ ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಬಾರದು. ಶತ್ರುವನ್ನು ಹಿಮ್ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಸಿ ಯಲ್ಲದೇ ಯಾರು ಮುದ್ದೆ ಮುಟ್ಟಬಾರದು. ನಮ್ಮ ಹೆಣ ಕಾಣದೆ ಯಾರು ಹಿಮ್ಮೆಟ್ಟಬಾರದು. ಎಂದೆನ್ನುವ ವೀರ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕನ ಕಥೆ.
ಅಂತಿಮ ಜಯವಲ್ಲ, ಸಣ್ಣ ಗೆಲುವಾದರೂ ಸಾಕು ಎಂದು ಸೋಲುತ್ತಲೇ ಕಾದ ಹೈದರಾಲಿಯ ಕಥೆ. ಹೊರಗಿನಿಂದ ಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡಿ ಗೆಲ್ಲಲು ಹೆಣಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಹೈದರಾಲಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಿನಿಂದ ಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ದಿವಾನ ಪೂರ್ಣಯ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಬೇಹುಗಾರ ಅಬ್ದುಲ್ ಖಯಂ ನ ಕಥೆ.
ಒಂದು ವರ್ಷದಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ. ಸತತ ಸಮರದ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವಾಧಿಕಾರ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಸಾವು ಮನೆಮನೆಗೂ ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟು, ಒಂದಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೆರಡು ಜೀವಗಳ ಕಪ್ಪ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಯುದ್ಧದ ಮಾಸದ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿ ಹೋಗಿ. ಜನಜೀವನವೇ ಮತ್ತೆಂದೂ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ಬರದಷ್ಟು ಕಲಕಿ ಬಗ್ಗಡ ವಾಗಿದ್ದ ದುರ್ಗದ ಕಥೆ.
ಪಂಜಾ ತೊಳೆಯಲು ಹೋದ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಸರ್ದಾರರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ನವಾಬನಿಗೆ ಪಿತೂರಿಯಾದ ಕಥೆ. ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ದ್ರೋಹ ಬಗೆದ ಮುಸಲ್ಮಾನರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳು ನಮಾಜು ಮಾಡಲು. ನನ್ನ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ಖುದಾ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಜ ಸಾಹೇಬ ರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಾಯುವುದೊಂದೇ ನಾನು ಮಾಡುವ ನಮಾಜು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಸಾವನ್ನು ನಮಗೆ ಕೊಡು ಎಂದು ಬಿಡುವುದಷ್ಟೇ ನಾನು ಮಾಡುವ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ದ್ರೋಹ ಬಗೆದವರು ನಾನು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಎನ್ನುವ ಸರ್ದಾರ್ ಖಾನನ ಕಥೆ. ಹಿಂದೂ-ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಏಕ್ ಹೈ ಹೈದರ್ ಸಪ್ಕೋ ದುಷ್ಮನ್ ಹೈ ಎಂದು ಕೂಗುವ ದುರ್ಗದ ಜನತೆಯ ಕಥೆ.
ಕೊನೆಗೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ದುರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತಾನು ಒಂಟಿಯಾದ ಮದಕರಿಯ ಕಥೆ.
ವಿಫಲ…ವಿಫಲ…ರೋಷ, ಆವೇಶ, ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ, ರಣೋತ್ಸಾಹ, ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮ ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ವಿಫಲ. ಅಷ್ಟು ದಿನದ ಗೆದ್ದ ಗೆಲುವು, ಬದುಕಿದ ಬಾಳು ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ವಿಫಲ. ಎನ್ನುವ ದುರಂತ ನಾಯಕನ ಕಥೆ.
ರಾಜನಾದವನಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾದ ಹಾಗೂ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ವಲ್ಲದ ಎರಡು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತರಾಸುರವರು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ ಸಹಿತವಾಗಿ ಎಳೆಎಳೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ರಾಜನಾದವನ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಬಹಳ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಗಿನ ಸಂದರ್ಭದ ಒಳಜಗಳಗಳು, ಕುಟುಂಬದೊಳಗಿನ ಜಗಳಗಳು, ಗೂಢಚಾರರು, ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ದಾಳಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತರಾಸುರವರ ಬೇರೆಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಂತೆ ಇದು ಕೂಡ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಳಿಮಾಡಿಸಿದಂತಹ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.

ರಾಜನಾದವನಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾದ ಹಾಗೂ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ವಲ್ಲದ ಎರಡು ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ತರಾಸುರವರು ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶ ಸಹಿತವಾಗಿ ಎಳೆಎಳೆಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ರಾಜನಾದವನ ಮಾನಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ವಿವಿಧ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ತರಾಸು ಅವರು ಬಹಳ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆಗಿನ ಸಂದರ್ಭದ ಒಳಜಗಳಗಳು, ಕುಟುಂಬದೊಳಗಿನ ಜಗಳಗಳು, ಗೂಢಚಾರರು, ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಬಳಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ದಾಳಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಟ್ಟುವಂತೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತರಾಸುರವರ ಬೇರೆಯ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಂತೆ ಇದು ಕೂಡ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಳಿಮಾಡಿಸಿದಂತಹ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ.

Hard to put the book down from the very first page. TaRaSu's love for Chitradurga and its well known palegara MadakariNayaka oozes out of every page. TaRaSu, in his preface, mentions about the extensive research and reading he conducted before writing this book. The reader will find contradictions to many popular beliefs held not just by ordinary people, but also guides at Chitradurga fort ( yes, i did watch a youtube video of guided tour of Durga) and historians.
I won't go to the details of the story and spoil fun for those who intend to read this wonderful novel. However, the vast ensemble of characters ranging from Obavva Nagati, Madakari's mother Ningavva, Madakarinayaka's wives, Parashurama Nayaka, Kalli Narasappayya, HyderAli, Dewan Poornayya, Maratha Peshwas, other Nayakas of surrounding fiefdoms, Chitradurga's own Dalawayis make for a rich novel. I was astonished to know of the wars Madakari Nayaka fought alongside HyderAli - something my high school history totally missed teaching. All the politics, friends to foes power-play, description of the places on Durga fort and wars make for a splendid reading. Towards the end, despite prior knowledge of what happened in the final battle, the novel persuades the reader to root for an alternate ending.
I had talked to a few fellow Kannadigas about starting Kannada book club and had listed down Durgaastamana amongst the first lot of books to be purchased for the club. I wanted to read this for over ten years now, but haven't had the chance. My cousin sent pdf versions of some Kannada books as "Covid-19 Lockdown " reads and this had to be the first one.
Makes me want to read rest of books by TaRaSu , especially the ones on previous palegars of Durga. Also definitely added to the list would be Hoysaleshwara Vishnuvardhana and Amogavarsha Nrupatunga. And I am longing to visit Durga to experience it in a new light- to bask in its lost glory!!

ತ.ರಾ.ಸು ಅವರ ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಕುರಿತ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಮಾಲೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಕೃತಿ. ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಾಹತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ ಕೃತಿ.
ಇದು ಚಿತ್ರದುರ್ಗದ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪಾಳೆಯಗಾರ ಮದಕರಿ ನಾಯಕರ ವೀರಗಾತೆ. ಜಾನಕಲ್ಲಿನ ಯುವಕನೋರ್ವ ದುರ್ಗದ ದೊರೆಯಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು, ಜನರ ಧೀರ-ಧೀಮಂತ ಮಗನಾದ ಕಥೆ.
ಯುವ ದೊರೆಯಾಗಿ ಸೆಣಸಿದ ಮೊದಲ ರಾಯದುರ್ಗದ ಯುದ್ಧದಿಂದ, ಕೊನೆಯ ಹೈದರಲಿಯ ವಿರುದ್ದದ ಯುದ್ದದವರೆಗೂ ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕನ ಅಳುಕಿಲ್ಲದ ಶೌರ್ಯ, ರಣತಂತ್ರ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಹಸಗಳ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ದುರ್ಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಪರಿಣಾಮ ಬೀರಿದ ಸಮಕಾಲೀನ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಘಟನೆಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳ ಪರಿಚಯವು ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ನಾಯಕರ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಮತ್ತು ದೈನಂದಿನ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಧರ್ಮ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮದ ಹಲವು ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆತನವನ್ನು ಮೀರಿದ ಸರಳ ಮಾನವಿಯತೆಯ ಗುಣವಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ.

ಒಂದೊಂದು ಸಾರಿ, ದುರ್ಗದ ಹಿರಿಮೆ ಮದಕರಿನಾಯಕನಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯಿತೋ ಅಥವಾ ತ.ರಾ.ಸು ಅವರಿಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯಿತೋ ಎನ್ನುವ ಸಂಶಯ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಗಿನ ದುರ್ಗವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಇಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬ ಬಲಿಷ್ಠ ಕೋಟೆ ಕಾಯುವ ನಾಯಕನಿದ್ದನೇ ಎನ್ನುವ ಯಾವ ಕುರುಹುಗಳೂ ಸಿಗದಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ. ದುರ್ಗಾಸ್ತಮಾನವು ಆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಂಶಯಗಳಿಗೆ ತೆರೆ ಎಳೆದಿದೆ. ಒಂದೊಂದು ಪುಟವೂ ನಾಯಕನ, ದುರ್ಗದ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಶಕ್ತಿ, ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರೂಪಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ತಳವಾರ ಚಾವಡಿಯಲ್ಲೋ, ಕೋಟೆ ಬಾಗಿಲಿನಲ್ಲೋ, ಏಕನಾಥೇಶ್ವರಿಯ ಸನ್ನಿಧಾನದಲ್ಲೋ, ಝಂಡಾ ಬತೇರಿಯಲ್ಲೋ ನಿಂತು ಪ್ರತ್ಯಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಮಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಭಾಸ. ಇದೊಂದು ಅದ್ಬುತವೇ ಸರಿ. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ, ನೀವು ಯಾವಾಗಲಾದರೂ ದುರ್ಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಾದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಣ್ಣು ದೂರದ ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ರಾಶಿಯನ್ನು ದಿಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ ಕಿವಿ ನಿಮಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

The seige of a fort has never been more heart wrenching.
Gunning for historical reality and armed with the power of the Kannada language to radiate the 'Heroic' tone throughout the entire length of the novel (which can be a bit of a drag before the real war begins), the fall of Durga and King Madakarinayaka pays off all the character and world building making for a well rounded experience. While not exactly reaching the dizzying heights of Dr. S. L. Bhyrappa's 'Parva', the oneness that is achieved between protagonist's fortunes and the reader's emotion is a journey worth the effort.

Beautifully written, remains fresh in my memory after so many years. It was one of the
first novels my parents had allowed me to read, and I remember being intimidated by the size of the book! All these years later, it still is one of the best historical books I've read. Poignant prose, amazing world building. The whole setting gives it a mythological or fantastical feel, and you'd be hard pressed to keep in mind that all this was real!
Will reread this again soon.
