Книга легка в прочитанні і має свою атмосферу. Якщо відкинути спроби віднайти зерно раціонального, то можна отримати добру порцію задоволення від прочитаного.

I went on a journey reading this book, wandered on unknown pathways looking for clear answers, frustrated at times with the smokescreen as I read and tried to piece it all together. Eventually I did. That was an exceptional moment.
This novella is quirky and quite unlike anything I have read for some time, I like quirky and unique things, and I liked this a lot.
What's it about then?

Ariel meets a family that are also in the guesthouse he is now reluctantly having to stay in, now that his planned journey has gone off course, off the radar for the time being. They are more than a little strange.
For a moment only the tinkle of ice and the popping of flame could be heard. When Ariel looked at Margot she was different. That moment held two views of her, like an old 3D postcard: hearty from one angle, suddenly fragile from another.
The writing is amazing in this novella, I was drawn in and swept away on a sea of words, painting a picture for me that was not clear for quite some time, indeed I as the reader was lost in the fog of confusion, not uncomfortable there however, intrigued, I was very keen to know what came next. What did come next made me gasp.
So terribly hard to outline this book in more detail without spoiling it for all those that are yet to read it. But it had so many wonderful elements going for it. Atmospheric, slightly creepy, and really rather clever. Words are failing me for this review.
Ariel is trying to make sense of all that is going on around him, using his very logical brain, his scientific brain, as he pieces together his impressions of the family he is stuck in the guesthouse with. Strange things happen, things don't make sense, nothing is quite as it seems.
I am quite surprised at some of the low ratings and reviews of this novella, based on reading those before I began I had low expectations but was hugely delighted that I did indeed see what this book I believe intends to be, what the author is wanting us to feel and experience. I got it.
Sometimes a book, even a short book such as this one can transport you into another time and place, another reality, a pure escapists pleasure. This one took me there. Tremendous.

Коли трапляється текст, який ніби говорить до тебе, не відпускає тебе, змушує зануритись і відчути себе в ньому, то з одного боку хочеться знайти цьому пояснення, зрозуміти, що саме тебе так зачепило, і чому одні файні тексти ти читаєш тижнями, а ось ці - за вечір. Але з іншого боку - прагнеш відсторонитись, не читати інші відгуки, не шукати пояснень, дозволити історії пройти крізь тебе, і лишити по собі гарний післясмак.
Десь про це і є «Сніданок з Борджіа». Про спроби зрозуміти, вирахувати, обґрунтувати, знайти пояснення і рішення. І про інший бік нашого світу - парадокси, питання без відповідей, аномалії. Про страх того, що одного дня ми потрапимо в знайому ситуацію, з якої не знайти виходу. Ба більше - страх може перетворитися в жах, вийти з-під контролю, змусити тебе почуватися ніби увісні. Але ти ж розумієш - ні, це не сон.
Якщо по сюжету - тут все просто. Айтівець Аріель летить на конференцію, а іншим маршрутом туди ж таємно їде Зев - дівчина, яка є його студенткою, і з якою в нього роман. Через вимушену посадку літака Аріель опиняється в далекому готелі, у дивній компанії, без доступу до звʼязку та інтернету. Єдине його бажання - дати знати Зев, що він затримується і скоро буде. Проста дія в сучасному світі, яку настільки ж важко зробити, як бігти уві сні…
Думаю, щоб відчути цей текст, десь варто ідентифікувати себе з Аріелем, або потрапити у подібні обставини, де блага цивілізації можуть здатися розкішшю. Це перша лінія входу в текст. А далі - там вже все залежить від того, наскільки сильно ви потребуєте відповідей на питання. Я точно не зчитав всього, бо це потрібно перечитувати і дивитися рецензії професіоналів, але навіть на поверхневому рівні відчув текст, стиль, ритм, і головне - атмосферу!

Що ви бачите перед собою? Це скарб! 🌝
Мій персональний, так точно. Бо ж давно я не відчувала такого різнопланового виру емоцій від книги, як це сталося зі Сніданком з Борджіа.
Ледь не на кожній сторінці мені хотілося поставити оцей смайлик - О_о - а на якихось він таки оселявся. Усю цю історію можна схарактеризувати однією, вже крилатою, фразою: “Нічого не зрозуміло, але дуже цікаво!”, адже в книзі відбувається повний хаос і плутанина.
Та попри те, це неймовірно атмосферна книжка, з об’ємними камерними декораціями та унікальними персонажами. І хоч я зовсім не розуміла, до чого все це йде і що відбувається, історія не здавалася мені нудною, не втомлювала, а полишивши книгу я подумки блукала її дощовими, туманними локаціями, а ж поки знову не поверталася до сторінок.
Автору навіть вдалося мене налякати! Я ніколи не лякаюся під час читання, навіть у пана Кінга ще жодного разу не вийшло пробрати мене до кісток, а от у Ді-Бі-Сі П'єра це вийшло.
Розв’язка теж виявилася для мене неочікуваною, хоча вона доволі передбачувана, якщо почавши читання віддатися логіці, а не почуттям. Мене ж автору вдалося заплутати, бо я не думала так далеко, я намагалася розібратися що відбувається ось тут і зараз на цій конкретній сторінці.
Я навіть не хочу вдаватися до подробиць і намагатися пояснити щось. Кожному, хто хоче таки зануритися в цю дивовижу, я б щиро радила не читати відгуків та анотацій, де передається якийсь зміст чи підтекст. Так буде значно цікавіше!
Я у захваті. Книга в топ року, а Ді-Бі-Сі П'єр - ласкаво прошу до мого переліку авторів, на книги та переклади яких я чекаю.

I had not read anything by DBC Pierre for a while so when I saw this in a local secondhand bookshop I snapped it up. It is set in Suffolk, where I grew up - an added advantage.
The Publisher was Hammer, which I didn't give a second thought to. Only when I started reading this did I realise that Hammer were the the same outfit as Hammer Films - the British horror film crowd. That took me back to the 70s, watching late night films from behind the sofa - pre and early teen. Scared witless but trying hard to be brave, and in truth also with an eye out for some nudity.
I don't read horror as a rule, so I approached the book with a little trepidation. It put my back up from the outset as an American flying to Amsterdam gets diverted to Stansted, and ends up in a hotel the other side of Ipswich. I don't expect perfect research from authors but there is no way that you would travel over 2 hours from Stansted in the fog when London is 40 minutes by train. Grrrrr.
The hotel is unsettling. The only other guests are a disfunctional family - are there ever any other type of family in books? There is no internet and no phone signal. At least that rang true for deepest Suffolk. This is deeply frustrating - the American is due at a conference in Amsterdam, with a side deal of a dirty weekend on offer. The girl waits for him in Amsterdam but how can he contact her.
The family entangle and ensnare the American, somehow he is unable to break free - from the two daughters especially.
Gradually the American works out why things are as they are. The situation is not good. He will never get to his conference or his girl. There is a very good reason why he is beyond Ipswich - DBC Pierre is forgiven.
The vibe is a bit like Iain Banks' The Bridge in that the protagonist seeks to find out what has happened using incomplete and confusing information.
Not really sure I bought into this - it is not a rivetting read. Interesting/average - call it what you will.

Peculiar, chilling and intriguing. A marooned American academic at an isolated guesthouse sees his stay descend into a nightmare, a real living nightmare! 6 out of 12.

A young academic and expert on artificial intelligence, Ariel Panek, is marooned at a wildly eccentric English guesthouse when severe fog grounds flights. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Zeva is waiting in Amsterdam, where they are supposed to be attending a conference together. Desperate to get a message to Zeva, Ariel (quickly christened 'Harry Panic' by his fellow guests) ingratiates himself with a strange family named the Borders who seem to be near-permanent residents there. The more time he spends with them, the more he is fascinated by this odd collection of characters: an ageing matriarch, a delusional uncle, a self-harming teenage girl, a practically mute boy, and Olivia, a woman of his age who is prodigiously talented at the piano, and seems to be the only normal one of the lot. But the longer Ariel stays at the hotel, the more difficult he finds it to make a connection with the outside world, and soon he is drawn into a spider's web of mind games alongside the sinister Borders.
Breakfast with the Borgias is exactly the kind of thing I actually want from the Hammer series. While other books from this line have experimented with form and theme, the best of them - like Cat Out of Hell by Lynne Truss and The Quickening by Julie Myerson - combine horror and humour with a schlocky B-movie feel. This is not exactly a hugely original story, but it's an excellent blend of Pierre's idiosyncratic style and typically grotesque characters with a page-turning plot. While I had no investment in Ariel and Zeva's relationship at the beginning and thought I was going to find them annoying, Gretchen was so completely and utterly hateful that by the end I was cheering them on and, even though the general nature of the outcome was fairly obvious from the start, I still really wanted to know exactly what would happen in the end.
The final twist is a classic ghost-story move, and could easily be called predictable, but I think that would miss the point. Subtle this book is not; it's not supposed to be. Aforementioned 'twist' is, in fact, hinted at not only throughout the book but also in the blurb on the cover, so it's hard to believe any reader is actually supposed to be surprised about it. This is an entertaining book, not a meaningful one. It delivered what I wanted it to deliver, and while it can't be compared to Pierre's Lights Out in Wonderland, it's definitely an agreeable return to form after the dire Petit Mal. Also better than Joanna Briscoe's Touched, another Hammer novella I read directly before it, which took the ghost/horror story premise more seriously.

This novella keeps you on edge, with twists and turns and unexpected yet believable climax. A good mind boggling read.

Книга надзвичайно атмосферна. DBC Pierre майстерно створює напруження, яке поступово наростає. Будинок, віддалений від цивілізації, є ідеальним тлом для параної і тривоги, а дивакуваті персонажі додають сюжету непередбачуваності. Дотепні та дискомфортні діалоги підсилюють відчуття незвичності.
Стиль написання книги може здатися не зовсім переконливим. Через короткий обсяг деякі аспекти сюжету та персонажів залишаються нерозкритими. Наприклад, мотивація певних героїв виглядає загадковою навіть наприкінці, що може розчарувати тих, хто очікує повного пояснення.
Щодо головних героїв:
Аріель на початку виглядає трохи відчуженим і навіть самовпевненим, але його впевненість поступово розсипається, коли обставини навколо нього стають дедалі більш незрозумілими й тривожними. Зева ніби виходить за межі звичного людського сприйняття, і кожна її дія здається продуманою до дрібниць, але незрозумілою для інших.
Зева більше, ніж просто персонаж; вона є символом усіх невирішених питань, що накопичуються в сюжеті. Вона провокує Аріеля, змушує його сумніватися в собі та в тому, що він вважає реальністю.
Не менш цікавим персонаже є Гретхен. Вона виступає таким собі своєрідним "мостом" між Аріелем і рештою родини Борджіа. «Сніданок з Борджіа» балансує між психологічним трилером, чорним гумором та сюрреалізмом. Сюжет зосереджений на Аріелю, технофобному академіку. Він опиняється в ізоляції в загадковому англійському будинку через скасування рейсу. Що спершу здається незручним сімейним обідом, поступово перетворюється на ланцюг моторошних і незрозумілих подій. А десь в іншому місці його чекає кохана дівчина Зева.
Книга надзвичайно атмосферна. DBC Pierre майстерно створює напруження, яке поступово наростає. Будинок, віддалений від цивілізації, є ідеальним тлом для параної і тривоги, а дивакуваті персонажі додають сюжету непередбачуваності. Дотепні та дискомфортні діалоги підсилюють відчуття незвичності.
Стиль написання книги може здатися не зовсім переконливим. Через короткий обсяг деякі аспекти сюжету та персонажів залишаються нерозкритими. Наприклад, мотивація певних героїв виглядає загадковою навіть наприкінці, що може розчарувати тих, хто очікує повного пояснення.
Щодо головних героїв:
Аріель на початку виглядає трохи відчуженим і навіть самовпевненим, але його впевненість поступово розсипається, коли обставини навколо нього стають дедалі більш незрозумілими й тривожними. Його внутрішній світ наповнений сумнівами, і він часто опиняється перед необхідністю приймати рішення в ситуаціях, які виходять за межі його логіки.
Аріель добре втілює тему ізоляції в романі: фізичної, емоційної та навіть технологічної. Його поведінка та реакції як своєрідний лакмусовий папірець для визначення меж між реальністю й ілюзією, а також тест на людяність в умовах, коли все здається ворожим.
Зева – персонаж, який уособлює загадковість та загрозу, але водночас є ключем до розгадки всієї історії. Її поведінка настільки дивна й непередбачувана, що вона не тільки лякає Аріеля, але й тримає в постійній напрузі. Зева ніби виходить за межі звичного людського сприйняття, і кожна її дія здається продуманою до дрібниць, але незрозумілою для інших.
Зева більше, ніж просто персонаж; вона є символом усіх невирішених питань, що накопичуються в сюжеті. Вона провокує Аріеля, змушує його сумніватися в собі та в тому, що він вважає реальністю.
Не менш цікавим персонаже є Гретхен. Вона виступає таким собі своєрідним "мостом" між Аріелем і рештою родини Борджіа. ДіБіСі П‘єр, колишній наркет і лауреат Букера, увірвався в моє життя кілька років тому з мізкопробивним романом «Світло згасло в країні див». Прочитане настільки зачепило мене, що я готовий був заявити гучним прописним кліше, потипу, все моє життя розділилося на ДО і ПІСЛЯ. Можливо, так тоді і зробив.
Іноді ти не можеш осмислено пояснити, що саме змінилося в тобі постфактум, але чітко відчуваєш це, як фіксуєш, до прикладу, невідомого походження біль в животі чи невагомі змахи крил метеликів в грудях. Так у мене з фільмами фон Трієра. Так і з прозою П‘єра.
Новий роман австралійця, «Сніданок з Борджіа», карнавальне дійство з елементами квантової фізики та цифрового інферно - йобаний пост-модерний шедевр про любов і час, врубатися в який настільки ж важко, наскільки важко опісля повірити, що це все - the end.

Остання дія змінила все. Сподобався цей сюрр, в захваті від останніх сторінок. Це було надзвичайно атмосферне чтиво. Автор таки застав мене зненацька - не очікувала такого повороту. Можливо через те, що читала три вечори з паузами, а книга маленька, на один.
А ще, цей текст прекрасно зійшов би за п'єсу. Залюбки глянула б таку.

Warum der gerade beendete Roman bei den aussortierten Büchern liegt?
Er war dann wohl doch nicht so gut.
Sry, doch das war langweilig!
Da grüßte noch nicht mal mehr das Murmeltier.
Ich hätte vielleicht nicht bereits nach 1/3 der Geschichte gewusst, worauf das alles hinausläuft, hätte ich damals nicht "Lost" gesehen.
Doch leider tat ich es.
Und was soll ich sagen? Das hier ist auch noch um Längen schlechter als "Lost", weil absolut dröge.
Warum müssen Autoren sich immer wieder an dieser ausgelatschten Idee versuchen?
Ganz übel wird es, wenn die Geschichte wie hier mit wirren und nervigen Aktionen der Charaktere überladen ist.
Wozu soll das dienen?
Will der Autor damit den Leser in die Irre führen? In welche Irre? Maximal in den Wahnsinn!
Wie gesagt, man merkt relativ schnell, wess Kind das ist...
Und was passiert, falls dieser Trick nicht klappt?
Massive Langeweile?
Nur mal so, das mit Gretchen fast zu Beginn der Geschichte hätte so nicht passieren dürfen. Aber selbst davor gab es bereits Hinweise so extrem wie winkende Zaunpfähle. Auf einen weist der Autor zum Schluss sogar selbst hin: Warum sollte ein altes Handy besseren Empfang haben als Ariels neues?
So was wäre lediglich meiner Oma nicht aufgefallen. Obwohl ich mir da nicht so sicher wäre.
Das Buch wird aussortiert. Empfehlen kann ich es, auch auf Grund seiner großen Nervigkeit, nicht

Дуже атмосферна і трохи тривожна книжка. Спочатку здається, що це просто історія про чоловіка, який застряг в незнайомому будинку через негоду. Але з кожною сторінкою все стає дивнішим, і ти вже сам не розумієш, що реально, а що ні.
Десь на межі потойбічного, чи навіть сюру з купою філософського підтексту.
Повно розсипаних підказок, які потрібно зібрати, при тому багато з них стають зрозумілі тільки коли пробираєшся далі і треба прогортати назад, щоб підібрати.
Читається легко, хоча іноді доводиться зупинятись і переосмислювати, що взагалі відбувається. Було цікаво спостерігати, як звичні речі, як-от телефон, інтернет, навігація - поступово зникають, і гг лишається сам на сам із незрозумілим.
Фінал відкритий, але в хорошому сенсі - змушує ще трохи подумати після прочитання, інтерпретувати. Доволі напружено, незвично і трохи навіть метафізично

This is the first novel I have read by D.B.C. Pierre and I was distinctly underwhelmed - I would describe it as laboured story telling - the plotting was obviously convoluted and the interactions of the characters predictable. The whole 'Hammer' theme was so obvious it was almost annoying though the resemblance was less to Hammer Horror Films than to those Amicus Dr. Terror films and if you have seen any of those films but especially 'Dr. Terror's House of Horror' then nothing in this books plot will come as a surprise.
It read much like a play with most of the dialogue providing little immediate clarity but clearly signalled as full of clues and hints of things unknown or yet revealed. In the theatre you know you only have an hour or less of annoying mystery before they have to start bringing it all together for the great reveal and the end of the play. Unfortunately a novel, even a short one like this, takes longer to read and absorb, particularly if the story isn't gripping you.
Although Mr. Pierre is supposed to be a very clever writer I couldn't help finding everything clunky and contrived - especially a plot in the already well established mobile phone era - that depends so totally on communications of all sort being down because of weather. I know it may have happened in 2014 when this novel was first published and that it may still happen now in 2023 but it is a hoary old chestnut of plot device and like the excuse of a dog eating your homework it might happen but that doesn't make it any more acceptable or believable. Fiction may involve the suspension of disbelief, particularly in weird/horror/suspense stories, but there are some plot lines that are too ridiculous for use anymore. The isolated house or hotel cut off from communications is a standard old trope of this kind of tale but in age when the residents of sub Saharan Africa have easier access to mobile phones then food or clean water it is harder and harder to believe in 'mobile blank spaces' in a tiny island like the UK.
Everyone else seems to love this writer and this novel - so maybe I am just a curmudgeon - but I regretted every minute wasted on this paltry second rate work - so you have been warned.

This is one of a series of short, novella length reads, in the Hammer series by some very well known authors. In this book, Booker winning author DBC Pierre, turns his attention to the horror genre, with a clever take on the traveller finding himself suddenly veering of the expected course and abandoned in a remote location. However, instead of black capes, stagecoaches and encroaching forest, our hero is an academic en route from the USA to Amsterdam, whose plane is grounded at the rather less romantic location of Stanstead. Ariel Panek is supposed to be meeting up for a romantic, if secretive tryst, with student Zeva at the conference. Instead, Ariel finds himself driven to The Cliffs Hotel and his isolation is a very modern one – a couple who live their lives, and romance, via mobile are suddenly disconnected by a lack of phone network and Wifi...
Desperate to try to connect with Zeva, Ariel finds himself meeting up with the bizarre members of the Border family; who seem only too happy to welcome him into their midst. Hearty Uncle Leonard assures Ariel he can obtain him a working phone, while overly emotional Margot renames him, ‘Harry Panic’ and Ariel finds himself embroiled with Margot’s daughter Olivia and the damaged, creepy Gretchen. Of course, if you read a lot of horror books, I am sure you will find the twist obvious, but I was happy enough to go with the flow and not try to second guess the plot. I enjoy the genre, but prefer the books to be interesting rather than scary, and this fulfils that criteria very well. The book is genuinely disconcerting, as Zeva and Ariel gradually realise that forces other than distance are keeping them apart and events escalate out of control. Like the rambling hotel that Ariel finds himself him, and the overwhelming inhabitants, the story somehow both meanders to its conclusion, yet has a real sense of building tension. I enjoyed the book, liked the characters and setting and thought this one of the most enjoyable of the Hammer books I have read. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publishers, via NetGalley, for review.

Автор вклад у діаголи героїв поверхнево інтелектуальні розмови про кванти і штучний інтелект, щоб роман здавався сучасним, однак це йому не допомогло. Маленька, захоплююча книга, яку я прочитала всього за півтори години. Ідея інтригує, а відчуття неясності та загадковості впродовж усього прочитання лише посилювало мою зацікавленість. Атмосфера готелю, куди потрапляє головний герой, неймовірно напружена. Було цікаво, бо я нічого не розуміла, поки не дійшла до кінцівки. Автор вміло грає з нами, обманюючи і створюючи атмосферу постійної невизначеності. Кінцівка дуже сподобалась, вона вражає і завершує історію так, що все стає на свої місця.

I really struggled through this book. The synopsis sounded interesting and thrilling, but in actuality, I wasn't complelled by the characters nor the plot.
The story centers on Ariel, an academic stuck for the night in an isolated guesthouse when his flight is grounded due to fog. For company, he has the welcoming yet odd Border family. As the night progresses, Ariel realises all is not what it seems at the guesthouse.
I felt that Ariel lacked gumption - he is a completely passive force in the story, seemingly happy to accept his lot with little fight. In some respects, I understand why DBC Pierre wrote Ariel like this, it drives the story to it's conclusion - however I found Ariel unrealistic in letting the events in the story 'happen' to him, and completely unlikeable because of it. Additionally, I found the Border's to be pretentious and the interactions with each other confusing.
And speaking of confusing, I'm still not entirely sure what actually happens in the finale of the novel particularly to Ariel's partner Zeva. It's almost as if, in an attempt to be different, Pierre has thrown elements into the plot without fully thinking them through.
Pierre has a very unctious and beautiful tone to his writing, but this is a novel that feels unfinished. I'd be interested to see what he writes next, but Breakfast with the Borgias is ultimately not for me.

I really enjoyed this roller-coaster very modern ride.. I have very little 'reading' SOH, but found quite a bit to chuckle, over..

Now I know why this book was shelved under "funky books" when I bought it! But it was fun reading it and the end of the story surprised me, even though one can see the turn of events coming.

Commissioned from Hammer (Random House) as part of their series of horror novellas, this latest book from DBC Pierre, intended to be read at one sitting just as you would watch a Hammer Horror movie in one sitting, plays with the tropes of horror films whilst updating them to our modern times. An American computer scientist called Ariel Panek finds himself in a remote country hotel after his flight is diverted to Stansted due to thick fog. He’s due in Amsterdam at a conference and to meet up with his student lover who is waiting for him there. Furious at this change to his plans, he is even more dismayed by finding that he is trapped in a remote location and most importantly, with no connectivity to the outside world. This is a very modern sort of hell – one where there is no accessing any sort of modern communication. To make matters worse, the only other residents of the hotel are a bizarre family (rather unsubtly named the Borders) and Ariel’s sense of isolation builds.
This set-up is full of potential, but the story never quite lives up to the possibilities. The main problem is that the novella just isn’t even frightening let alone horrifying, surely a prerequisite for a book in this particular series. A literary horror story should also make the reader think, and up to a point the narrative does indeed do this, but only on a fairly superficial level. The idea of hell equating to lack of connectivity isn’t exactly a ground-breaking one, and most of us have experienced it to some extent. So overall I was somewhat disappointed in this book, although it’s certainly readable and occasionally amusing, in a wry sort of way. It’s quite cleverly done, though, and there’s some good writing here, but a horror story it is not – more of a comment on our modern day reliance on technology.
This set-up is full of potential, but the story never quite lives up to the possibilities. The main problem is that the novella just isn’t even frightening let alone horrifying, surely a prerequisite for a book in this particular series. A literary horror story should also make the reader think, and up to a point the narrative does indeed do this, but only on a fairly superficial level. The idea of hell equating to lack of connectivity isn’t exactly a ground-breaking one, and most of us have experienced it to some extent. Це було захопливо. Інтригуюче. Химерно. Дуже дивно, але при цьому смачно й хочеться ще. Автор вміє створити настрій. Однозначно продовжу знайомство з іншими його творами.

This was is the first book I’ve read from Pierre so I was really excited to see what I’d gotten myself into.
The Book
Location: England and Amsterdam
Characters: Ariel Panek, Zeva, The Bolder (Borgia) family - Leonard, Margot, Olivia, Gretchen& Jack, Guesthouse workers - Rob, Clifford
Ariel Panek, a doctor is desperately trying to get to his girlfriend Zeva. They’d arranged to meet in Amsterdam, combining a conference he’d be speaking at with a romantic getaway for two. Travelling from Boston fog has thwarted these well-laid plans, grounding all aircraft and forcing Panek to set up for the night in a guest house which seems all but abandoned. As he tries to ensure his love is not left abandoned and questioning his loyalty, he is introduced to a family also residing in the house, gathered in memory of a loved one, a family who welcomes him with open arms, and who seem to be almost intent on ensuring he never leaves.
As his logic battles against reality Ariel is about to discover that beyond facts is a truth that he never imagined being possible, keeping him locked in battle against his own thoughts.
My thoughts
What I liked
It was easy to read, the story flows smoothly and there is no use of verbose descriptions or unnecessary inclusion of information which leaves the reader free to invest their attention in the plot and the characters.
1. Ariel – one generally expects the main male character to be assertive, aggressive and a formidable force of masculinity – Ariel is none of these, he is but a geek thrust into a world which no amount of studies, quantum physics or facts can accustom him to.
2. A very nicely implemented shift between Ariel and Zeva – it really captured the essence of a young relationship, of two people desperate to be together but distanced by the
3. There is a brilliant split in Ariel, him battling between getting swept up in assumptions and emotional reasoning – I found this to be such a wonderfully realistic portrayal of an individual forced into a situation they’d normally never have chosen to be in.
4. The Borgia family unit – truly bizarre, unexpected and almost beyond belief. What starts as a seemingly innocent introduction and interaction soon leads to a number of instances occurring which left not only Ariel, but me, completely suspended in a place of confusion and intrigue. They are realistic, bickering and throwing subtle insults at one another, then turning it into a declaration of love and appreciation for the bond they share.
I love that I haven’t stopped thinking about Ariel and his experiences, I feel for the guy and really was sad to see that he’d not find the end he so truly deserved.
What I Disliked
1. I began to notice a possible climax early into the book, which Pierre built on really well, and managed to include so subtly I can’t help but wonder if other readers missed it – however, when doing this there should also be included a more detailed back line per character that doesn’t leave you feeling like there’d been a change in direction half way, that doesn’t leave you with questions that go unanswered, and then finding more questions as you continue.
It felt almost as if this were a project sprung on Pierre at the last minute, which he jumped into with excitement and dedication, but then lost focus of the closer he got to his deadline, and then decided to just wing it as best he could.
If you’re easily spooked and enjoy the beating heart of a shocking conclusion, I highly recommend this book. I would have given more stars if it weren’t for the fact that the concluding chapters felt to devoid of information I felt necessary to include in rounding off an otherwise well-paced and written book.

Це дуже атмосферний трилер з нотками готичного роману і камерного детективу.
Коли я починала читати,я знала майже напевне,чим закінчиться книга.
Мені заспойлерила фінальний сюжетний поворот своїм натяком одна книжкова блогерка.
І саме те,що для мене в кінці не було вау ефекту,здобуло мою превелику симпатію до роману. Я мала саме такі очікувані враження від книги,які й отримала.
На підтвердження сюжетного повороту на який я чекала,я шукала натяки по всьому тексту і їх там передостання кількість. Особливо в розмовах про квантову фізику.
Хоча у другій главі автор нас трішки заплутує,що додає твору ще глибшого смаку.
Це чудова книга, окрім основної канви,про яку я не можу розповісти без спойлерів,автор показує нам на що ми перетворилися зі своєю залежністю від гаджетів та інтернету. І ще більше те,як ми використовуємо їх аби втікати від реальності, як ми підмінили поняття «налагодження зв‘язків» на «втечу від будь-яких зв‘язків». Нічого нового в цій думці немає,але варто зупинитись і осмислити це ще раз:
«Просто позбувшись телефона і зв’язку на один день і випадково опинившись без жодних інших інструментів серед чужинців - він зумів зруйнувати себе. Це означало що у своєму щоденному житті він використовував телефон і зв’язок, як кротовини, аварійний лаз крізь час і простір. Якщо ситуація надто загострювалась при особистій зустрічі, він комусь дзвонив, якщо телефонний дзвінок ставав надто неприємним, він надсилав повідомлення ще комусь іншому, якщо це не допомагало, він переходив до соціальних мереж, і так він ніколи не мав справу з чимось близьким чи несприятливим довше за секунду. Ба більше, цю практику риття кротовин за допомогою пристроїв усі схвалюють як позитивну річ. Налагодження зв’язків.»

Чесно кажучи, книжка тримала (не йшла спати, поки не дочитала), але якшо перші сто сторінок були в міру витриманою інтригою, то останні п’ятдесят вже трохи дратували і здавались якимись надто штучними.
Сподобалась легка рука написання (при тому досить поетично як для містичного твору); не сподобалась поверхневість квантових тем, склалось враження, ніби автору було лінь копнути глибше в стилі «ну ви поняли, сингулярність, туда-сюда» і не сподобалась нелогічність деяких вчинків науковця, ну якось вже дуже банально, але не буду спойлерити.
Було би цікаво почитати новелку про історію, згадану в передмові Гаською Шиян 🌝
Сподобалась легка рука написання (при тому досить поетично як для містичного твору); не сподобалась поверхневість квантових тем, склалось враження, ніби автору було лінь копнути глибше в стилі «ну ви поняли, сингулярність, туда-сюда» і не сподобалась нелогічність деяких вчинків науковця, ну якось вже дуже банально, але не буду спойлерити.
