Being a teenage girl sucks sometimes. Especially when your long-time boyfriend takes you out on a date directly before reaching inside your chest cavity and ripping your heart out.
This was the kind of night where you think things can't get worse.
Then, they do.
Dani doesn't have a lot of time to wallow in the pity pool because out of the black of night, very scary things emerge...intent on capturing her.
Dani always did want a fairytale and now she's living one, only childhood bedtime stories were never so dark and nefarious and the Princess isn't drawn to two captivating men at the same time.
The decision should be easy, because one is spoken for, but the heart rarely concerns itself with such trivial details.
Tasha enjoys writing romantic fiction where not even the sky is the limit, and anything is possible. A sucker for romance and magic, she prefers happy endings and would rather read a book than watch TV. To that end, she spends a substantial amount of her time consuming or creating folklore, fairytales, and fantasy.
Honestly, I found this book on accident, while browsing through Amazon, and I was absolutely taken aback at how much I enjoyed reading this! I was inexplicably drawn to the simple yet cute cover, and knew I had to at least see what this was about. Also, the title of this book just had me intrigued. The description was a little vague, so it certainly did NOT prepare me for what turned out to be an enthralling read. I blissfully devoured this book in only a matter of 2-3 hours. Yes, it was THAT good.
The plot was engaging and suspenseful, with all the right ingredients of a perfect blend of YA romance & historical fantasy. The world building was impressive, magical, and descriptive. There was an unpredictable love triangle thrown in for good measure too (which I absolutely LOVED!). Oh, and did I mention that the heroine, Danni, kicked ass?
Ok, so not literally. She did play the Damsel in Distress role fairly well, but there was just a quiet dignity about her that made her so likable. She was funny, down-to-Earth, and I very much enjoyed seeing this enchanting new universe in her POV.
Further, her love interests: Nikolas and Liam, were just puuuuurfect. 'Nuff said. One is a family enemy who grew up with black magic, and the other one is LIGHT. Just bright and shiny and beautiful and perfect in all the best ways. They were both SO different yet equally mysterious and compelling. Still, I'd have to say Nik took the cake; he made my heart sing.
I don't really want to get into summarizing the book, because I'm afraid I might give too much away, but the description just does not do this book any justice. There's black magic, evil sorcery, royal families, danger lurking in every corner, humor, freaky time-travel, lots of boy-drama, plenty of drool-no-SWOON worthy moments, and a ball (yes, a ball, where girls wear beautiful gowns & magical things always end up happening).
Overall, I did notice a few editing/spelling errors here and there, but the overall plot overshadowed all the minor details. Usually, when it comes to certain indie books, I always end up finding something off, like either the romance or fantasy element ends up to be too overbearing or lacking; this was not the case for this book, as there was a happy balance between the two.
My only gripe is that when I got to around 90%, I started panicking. I just DID NOT want this amazing story to end! There was definitely a cliffhanger, and of course, being the freak I am, I immediately went on Amazon to check if a sequel was released -- it's NOT. My only warning is that you may want to hold off reading this until AFTER the sequel's released, because once you start, you WILL be coming back for more.
It's a great story, but it does suffer from editing, grammar, and factual issues. Point of order: Grapes don't grow on trees in orchards, they grow on vines in vineyards! There are also a number of misused words, and sorting through them did get painful at times. Getting a better proofreader would make this a much better experience for the reader.
I must say that I was pleasantly surprised when I read "Tethered" and became so engrossed with the story that I just couldn't wait for the next chapter!
So, what did I love about this story? I'm glad you asked! Ms. Van Der Hyde was able to create a beautiful world! Her descriptions were so detailed that I felt like I was watching a movie play in my head rather than just reading a book. Her characters are realistic and you immediately become invested in Dani and her plight. Oh, and I just LOVED Dani. She was the ideal heroine...strong and NOT whiney (Thank you so much!!!). Everything that was thrown at Dani gave us a chance to see how strong a character she really is. She shows strength and integrity, something that all young women need today!
Of course, I could not write a review without mentioning those wonderful men...Liam and Nikolas! This is one interesting love triangle and even though I have my clear favorite, the author gave both men qualities that any women (young or old) would love. Several scenes between Liam and Nikolas cracked me up!
The overall plot is neat and I have so many questions about what is to come. I have my fears, but I'm ready for the next chapter of Dani's journey to becoming what she has been destined to be....and if we get a little more Nikolas along the way, then that's even better! (Guess you know who my favorite is!)
The only problem with the book is several minor errors, but I've bought published books for way more money that were worse. For a self published book, it's written very well, with few errors.
If you like young adult stories mixed with a little romance and fantasy, give this new author a try...I'm sure you'll enjoy this journey! I also know that book two is in the works, so hopefully our wait will not be long!
I loved this book for the creative plot and fascinating characters. The only downfall is the series isn’t finished! Come on Tasha write faster, you fans are in the edge of their seats.
I read this book today. I enjoyed the story immensely. It captured my imagination & held me enthralled to the very end! I want to read more & I look forward to the next book! I would have given it 5 stars, except for the rant worthy spelling & grammar issues! The grape trees in the orchard made me cringe (grapes grow on vines in a vineyard)! Therefore I'm only giving it 3 stars. I beg/encourage you to please, please, please get a professional proof reader to edit your manuscript BEFORE you publish! I want to enjoy reading your stories without being distracted by errors (being hopeless at grammar myself, they have to be pretty bad for me to pick them up!). Best wishes & kind regards. P.S. Great cliff hanger, I've hunted high & low in desperation for the sequel, only to find it's not out yet! :(
Tethered spans a few genres: young adult, romance, fantasy, and I think a bit of historical...though the last is a guess based on language and clothing description.
While I enjoyed the story, and recognize the book is clearly character driven, there were grammatical, spelling, timeline and point of view issues. They didn't make me put my Kindle down, but they were frequent enough to merit a better pass on edits.
I am definitely interested in reading the next installment of the Avenlore series, and yes, that's because of the swoon-worthy male yumminess and emotional connections of the heroes in Tethered.
So when I got this book I didn't realize that it was a mythical book and wasn't sure if I was going to like it but I really did and cant wait to see what happens next in the story. Good characters and great story line.
