This hilariously bad cookbook from the 1970s was clearly written by a very young person who had never published before and whose editor had never edited a cookbook before. The recipes are based on some nutritional "science" she researched in a library somewhere and some semi-charming folk wisdom about food and food preparation and generally comes across as unbelievable/unsubstantiated information.
The author also tends to put so-called "healthy" ingredients in everything, regardless of whether it makes sense. Karen my dear, life is too short to put wheat germ in everything! Don't get me wrong, I'm a vegan who loves to cook and bake and I do have wheat germ on hand at all times for baking, but this cookbook goes way beyond the wheat germ pale.
If you're not looking for a useful cookbook, Forget-About-Meat offers a zany window into the period of time when vegetarianism was a super weird, niche diet in North America and people had no idea how nutrition worked. It was, admittedly, fun to read and laugh at the absurd recipes. I also appreciate this was pushed during a major turning point in the history of North American vegetarianism and I hope it actually helped some people shift away from meat-centric diets.
If you're looking for recipes that are actually well-written, easy to follow, and produce delicious cuisine, try Isa Chandra Moskowitz' books!
