Sylvia and Matthew Haslett had mixed feelings about their mother's old aunt coming to visit. They only remembered from the last visit that she was smelly and 'weird'. However, they were about to learn much more than they wished on this visit!
"Aunt Tilda" by Deborah McClatchey reminded me of some great spook stories I was told as a child. Old excentric aunts can be great fun but also very scary. The book uses this to its advantage. Very good.
A modern perfectly witchy tale! Aunt Tilda is a little bit off and has something up her sleeve. A lot of interesting history on the Salem witch trials if you aren't familiar. The story is totally engrossing, quite wicked at times and has an excellent ending. Written in the true style of the classics with some modern updates it was an excellent read.
I love love stories about weirdy old women; ever since the gray sisters in Greek myth and the three weird sisters in Macbeth, I've wanted to grow up to be one. Well, here we have one -- not three -- but one allows more focus on this spooky, witchy elder female. I so loved this tale, I can hardly restrain myself from giving away the story's secrets.
I can tell you this: get this, read it, if you're no longer a femme fatale, and start thinking about what a great old wise woman you're going to make.
Oh, and this: justifiably, young Sylvia and Matthew Haslett are uneasy about their mother's old aunt coming to visit. Last time she came, she was smelly and 'weird'.
This time... Aunt Tilda reveals herself, and the youngsters are going to wish she hadn't!
Matthew and Sylvia are not pleased to learn that their Aunt Tilda is coming to stay for awhile. After all she's old, smells funny and is nosey. Once she arrives they start thinking that maybe they might have been wrong about her but then some strange and unexplainable things begin to happen and the truth is more than what they were prepared for.
I certainly enjoyed the plot to this story and loved all the paranormal and supernatural elements. The story line was well paced and the characters were strong. I read it in one sitting and look forward to reading more if this author's work.
