It is books like 'Haven' and 'Dragoon' that inspire me and makes me ridiculously excited about reading, about the art of imagination and storytelling.

Ivanovich is an excellent writer. Truly gifted. I just love her writing style, how everything just flows. When you're reading you'll experience that the story is writing itself, and it does so flawlessly.

(Feel free to read my review of the first installment, Haven.)

Again, I loved Katelyn, our protagonist. Her narrating voice is so solid, and good gravity, is she sensible, smart, and selfless. I admire her and her ability to make strong, fearless decisions. Never the damsel-in-distress and never a weakling, yet so easy to relate to emotionally. I also very much appreciated her witty nature. At the end of the day, she was an eighteen-year-old girl who'd managed to do what few could.

It was so interesting that Ivanovich decided to include Katelyn's friends from Haven in the Outside World, and it had me wondering if the story would go down a doomed route because of it. Would Katelyn's epic journey be weighted down by constantly having to look out for her friends and rescue them? Would they put her in unnecessary danger and risks due to their lack of knowledge? The answer is no.

Surprisingly enough, it worked very well. It made Katelyn more vulnerable and it lent her more strength. There was always a possibility she wouldn't make it back home, to Haven, but with people she cared about with her, she had to. And they were willing to fight by her side.

Things didn't turn out the way I'd expected with Dylan; though, despite my hopes(?) it was realistic for Katelyn and Dylan to have a rough, conflicting relationship. Ivanovich let Dylan stay true to his nature but in an enjoyable way. I liked not liking him.

As I mentioned in my Haven-review, romance isn't what you think of when you're reading these books. However, the story is driven by the heart.
Fake identities, flying ships, explosions, immense danger, and an impossible quest aside - Katelyn's heart always wondered about the one person, the one dragoon. Rune. And it drove the story to be more relatable and hopeful.

There wasn't much romance, but it was just enough to be a small step towards something greater. Rune is unlike any other love interest that I've read about. He is unwillingly stoic. There is so much to understand about him. Dragoons are not seen as people and they aren't worthy or allowed to feel, to care, and to love. I look forward to experiencing more of Rune's character development.

'Dragoon' is a highly enjoyable read without a dull moment! I'll be waiting for the third installment.

Oh. My. Word. There are so many things I want to say, but half of those would be spoilers that I'm sure most people would not like to know until they have read this amazing sequel. So I will start with this: The War of the Princes has quickly gone to the top of my favorites list. I loved Haven, and Dragoon lived up to everything I expected from it after reading the first book. I really wanted Dragoon to be good, and it went far past everything I hoped it would be! In Haven there were a few small mistakes that Dragoon didn't have, which made me give it the 5th star I didn't give Haven. Dragoon also had more depth and brought out so many emotions I wasn't expecting to feel. I started it this morning, and could not put it down until I finished it. I was constantly being surprised. Every time I got comfortable, my mind was thrown into chaos by the twists that I never expected. I finally learned to just keep sitting on the edge of my seat.

Katelyn has become one of my favorite characters I have read about. Honestly, I feel like I am reading about myself. I could feel her sadness, anger, happiness, and pain. I admire her because of how real she is. Katelyn isn't this big strong intimidating girl that no one could ever compare themselves to. She is terrified most of the time, which is what I think any person would be in her situation, and she overcomes it. She swallows her fear, and uses it to give her the strength to get done what needs to be done. Don't get me wrong, she has many flaws, but she recognizes them and attempts to change them to help herself become a better person. Katelyn Kestrel never gives up on trying to do the right thing. And her sense of humor is wonderful.

There were a couple times I would start to be disappointed, thinking a problem had been dropped or a character forgotten, but time after time my doubts were thrown back in my face and made me ashamed of having ever stopped believing in A.R. Ivanovich, which I will never do again. I want the third book so badly, and I know it will drive me crazy not knowing what is going to happen! Until I am able to have it, I will just keep working on my fan art and re-reading the first two books that have become two of my favorites.

Now, let me start this review off by saying that I've never written a book review before in my life... That should first of all tell you how much I love this book and want everyone to read it! (And also, maybe, the more reviews, the faster the next book will come out........*hopeful look*)

Haven was a wonderful book! I read it last year and absolutely loved it, so I was excited when I found out there was a sequel in the works! (I actually emailed the author and begged for one *cough*) I signed up POST HASTE for the mailing list so I knew when the next book was coming and started my countdown! I wasn't disappointed! Dragoon picks up a year after the end of Haven and while we're given bits and pieces of what Kat's life has been like, it's obvious she's not happy. The beginning can be a bit confusing, since you pick up right after something has happened, but it works itself out and soon the adventure begins!

I was glad to see some of the old characters back in this book (Dylan, Ruby, RUNE *swoon*... heh, that rhymes...) and the adventures they go on are certainly exciting! I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but I will say that you get to see more of the Outside world and learn more about the Princes and the war they are fighting.

And, of course, the reunion between Kat and Rune the Dragoon. *double swoon*

Honestly, this is a can't-put-down book, and you won't be sorry AT ALL that you bought it! I work two jobs and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning until my eyes burned and watered and then woke up early before work to read, snuck in passages at my break time and in general was lost in thought thinking about Dragoon when I had to do anything other than read. It's that good!!! :D

I hope the next book comes out soon....... I want to see what Prince Varion is like, what's going to happen to Breakwater and Haven, and what the heck is going on with the Monarch.

Long story short, READ THIS BOOK!

PS: Don't buy any tarts from Rocco Thatcher; he's nothing but a swindler. ;)

I received a free copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this second installment as much as I loved the first. I was very glad to be back in this exciting and unique world. Katelyn is a great main character, she loves her friends and is only looking out for them, sometimes it ends badly but she has only good in her heart. It was nice to see Haven again although it was only at the beginning, but that's where her story started so it was nice for the second book to start in the same place.

I loved that I was not expecting half of what happened, yet it all made perfect sense. We got to know some minor characters (from the first book) better, and some old friends and foes, were back. The story moved swiftly yet goings on were explained perfectly and I felt like I was standing right beside them.

Now I don't want to give too much away, but I am very glad s certain character was back and just as great as ever although their interactions were few and far between, it was good to know they really are a good person, although every reader new it from the first book, it is good to have proof. Another returning character I was a little disappointed to be back, but it worked and was a little strange that their personality was completely different from the first book but after what they had gone through, I would have been bitter too.

I understand the title of the next book, I have a small hint as to what is going to happen next but no idea as to the main plot, looking forward to reading it.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
4.5 stars — great followup to the first book. Again, lots of great action, an intriguing and unique built world, hilarious banter between characters, a flawed protagonist that has been thrust into the craziness again….oh yeah, and Rune. *sigh*

Hmmmm, how am I going to do this review without giving anything away? Impossible. Maybe I will just say that I enjoyed this one equally as well as the first, but there are still a few tiny things that bothered me on occasion (but obviously not enough for me to round down).

1) Katelyn could get a little caught up in her maudlin self-defeatist attitude…luckily that was usually countered with a friend calling her on it. And really, she does have a lot on her shoulders, though she really could learn to lean on her friends and allies more.
2) Sometimes the details about the world became overwhelming, and since I’m actually the type of reader who needs a lot of realistic touchstones to enjoy a story, it became taxing on my imagination….it’s really a personal preference thing. (ie I enjoy paranormal, but usually not all out fantasy)
3) Huh, I thought I had a 3rd, but now I can’t think of it.

I really do enjoy that these books don’t have cliffhanger endings…they set up for the next book, but you can still feel you got a bit of a conclusion in there. That being said, I am *not* looking forward to Monarch based on the synopsis…NO KATELYN NO!!!

In summary: Prepare for intensity, prepare for heartbreak, prepare for horrifying images, prepare for snark….good stuff.

ON REREAD:
4.5 stars — DUDE! I seriously forgot how tense and crazy and occasionally heartbreaking this book was!! I just…I’m so glad it’s as good as I remember. Minus the toned down snark from Katelyn. That still makes me sad, and I still don’t understand why the author or the traditional publisher made that decision…

I loved that we got extra time with a few of the Haven characters in this one, though I still want more. I’m so intrigued about Kyle’s abilities. I really loved that by the end we got to learn even more about the nature of Haven and its people as well. I don’t remember that as well from my first readthrough, so I wonder if that’s new, or my memory is just crap.

I cannot believe the horror of Lastland. Like, it’s freaking crazy. Just when you think they can’t get more depraved, you learn more.

I loved a few of the twists and turns, and hated a few others. I’m so glad I’m finally going to find out what happens next, because I think it’s going to be epic.

It’s also been insanely fun to buddy read this series with Lillian @Mom With a Reading Problem, because we’ve been totally fangirling and getting our incredulity out.

A double review of this and the next novel originally posted on [a cup of tea and an armful of books]

At the close of Haven, Katelyn has resigned herself to her secret. Although she shared it with her closest friends, if it gets out that she visited the outside world, repercussions will not only affect her. Life, however, seems a little dull since she's been back, and Katelyn is trying to decide what to do with her future when the Pull is pulling her toward the outside world and the boy she left behind. Things change when a half crazed member of their community destroys the radio tower, and everything that Katelyn thought she had escaped from may be coming right to the doorstep of Haven and her loved ones. Her mission takes her back to the outside world, and only she knows how bad it would be if she doesn't find the lost explorers before they tell the Prince how to get to Haven.

Paperglass thrusts us deeper into the outside world. I was very happy to read more about how their military and ability system worked. We got to see a little more depth to why the Margraves and Dragoons are so dreadful, instead of being told. The world started to get fleshed out the further they traveled from the wall, so I was able to see how Katelyn reacted to life among the outsiders, which was something I had wished happened in Haven. Again, the pacing in Paperglass is a bit faster than I wanted it to be. It worked a little better this time around because there were multiple conflicts in the novel, rather than only being a novel about returning to Haven and to safety.

A complaint I do have is that there aren't many named side characters. Paperglass, like Haven, is driven by the core main characters, with side characters making a brief appearance to say something and then sit on the sidelines until they were necessary again or dying on the page. As a consequence, they felt very much like tools to drive the plot forward, rather than actual characters. They could have been a little more vibrant. Another consequence of that is that Paperglass becomes a romance novel with fantasy thrown in. The focus seemed a bit heavier on Rune and Katelyn's relationship this time around, and less on the conflict and mission that the characters are on.

I was interested, however, in the inclusion of Dylan. It wasn't clear if he had survived at the end of the last novel or not, so I was surprised to see him alive and moderately well when Paperglass started. I do like when you can't always tell what antagonistic characters are up to, and having Dylan in Paperglass was something that created tension and made Katelyn question the morality of her past and current decisions.

Although the characters do bother me a little, Paperglass is a book that I enjoyed because the world is rich enough to make up for the lack of characterization. It also helps that these novels are very short reads; they're engaging for the four hours or so that it takes to finish reading them, which is good if you want to read straight through them in an afternoon. Paperglass built upon the foundation started in Haven, so I enjoyed it a bit more.

4 stars.

Update 1.0
I'm so excited to read this book. It's only been a day but I already misses Rune.

Review
What I like about this book is that it depicts two type of worlds: Utopia and Dystopia. Katelyn lives in a better world while Rune is still fighting in a war in their world as a Dragoon. The pacing of this book is quite fast but I'm not sure if I like it or not.

On Katelyn's second return on the Outside World, she now have a mission and that is to rescue her mother and her team who went outside 6 months ago for a Historical Research. Her mother's team doesn't have a clue about the current war in the Outside World and their importance in it. Therefore, only Katelyn can help the team to go back to Haven safe and sound. Unknown to Katelyn, her friends Ruby, Sterling and Kyle followed her Outside World. Thus, their group is set in an adventure to rescue the other historical research team who are in prison inside the Prince's castle.

My thoughts
I want to say that I like the second book but actually it didn't reached my expectation. But that doesn't mean I don't love it anymore.

A lot of things happened after Katelyn left the Outside World. Katelyn' and Rune's world are very interesting and I love to explore more about it, but the second book didn't give anything that will excite me. However, I was so excited to see that Ruby and Kyle are now part of the Outside World. I hope on the third book, we will get more idea of the Outside World and the secret/conspiracy of Haven.

Katelyn as a character is still okay but on this book, she's a bit boring. Dylan is also back but not as much as a bad guy. And of course, Rune is still awesome especially now that he has another reason to live. There are new characters in this book too. They were not explored much yet but I hope they will be included in the next book.

The romance is as minimal as it can be. It makes me hungry for more, so that's why I'm so excited to read more. I love the way the author depicts the love of our star crossed lovers. On the first book, it's already obvious that they want to stay together but because of Katelyn's circumstances, she can't stay nor he can live with her. So they have to be separated... more or less, forever. They have to sacrifice for their own people.

There are more things to improve and I hope the author has more things for us in the future. The story has lots of potential and hopefully not to be wasted. I crave for more Haven and Outside World. I want more information of the Princes and how the war started. Why did the Haven people cut their ties in the Outside World hundred years ago? What are the Lurchers and who created them? Who is sending them papers and researchers in the Still Well from the Outside World? Lots of question in my mind that would hopefully be answered in the next book.

Paperglass is the sequel to Haven and picks up a year after the events in the first book. If you haven’t read Haven yet – What are you waiting for? The book is amazing!

Anyway, in Paperglass we find our heroine, Katelyn, graduating from high school, ready to set off in the world. After leaving her peaceful haven in Haven (see what I did there? Sorry…) Katelyn vowed never again to leave Haven for the war-torn outside world. Then, everything changes. A man commits an act that puts many lives in jeopardy, including Kaelyn and her friends. Soon she finds that Haven’s government is hiding things from it’s citizens and Katelyn is tasked with using her talent of finding anything to lead a rescue team to the outside world to rescue a group of Havenites who have left their protective country and ventured into what was unknown to them, but a world Katelyn knows all too well – she bares the scares.

Unwilling to bring more people to the outside world and risk their lives, she sneaks off to rescue the team, led by an individual going by code name Paperglass. Once back on the outside, Katelyn finds herself in an alliance she doesn’t quite trust, and three other surprises are waiting for her.

Paperglass reunites us with characters we knew and loved... and hated from Haven, as well as introducing us to new characters and more of the outside worlds war and politics. There are twists and turns, just when I think Katelyn is home free, safety is torn from her. Everything is so well thought out and put together, it just flows from one scene to another. The only reason it took me 11 days to finish this book was because I had to read another book for my job.

If you loved Haven, Paperglass will surely keep your attention and leave you desperate to find out what happens next, in book three of the War of the Princes series, Monarch.

NOTE: Paperglass was previously released under the title Dragoon.

The End, everything leads up to an exhilarating show down. The most epic bad gal gets just what she deserves. This installment has some very sad moments but come heck or high water Kat will see justice is served. Rune I’m happy to report is just as dreamy and honor bound as before. He too will risk everything in order to do the right thing. Dylan is well Dylan, sour and broken I hope he finds his way…I know there is more to this character I hope we get the chance to truly see him shine. Kat is brought face to silhouette with the prince of shadows and this leaves her stunned. The end of this installment was full of betrayal and bravery I cannot wait to see what happens next. There is so much I want to say about this book but in the spirit of keeping things spoiler free I will not.

This series just gets better and better. I tore through book two in a single day. This went from being a story that I was casually enjoying to one that I am emotionally invested in. I love the premise that each person has a specific gift or ability that is required to keep the "machine" of life moving... yet she also includes characters that have no special abilities that make a serious mark on the world. I think what tipped the scales for me was watching the illusion that Haven is some sort of utopia crumble away. Margrave Hest was a fascinating character. I thought her lingering need for a connection to someone or something was well done and, evil as she was, I actually felt sorrow for her at the end. The development of the characters of Brendon and Dylan Axton I also thought was very well done. Anxiously awaiting the next installment!

5 stars! Great story and character development. I love when characters are introduced and one by one we are kept in the dark as to whether they are good, bad or indifferent. They are simply presented to us allowing their true usefulness to the storyline to be unfolded slowly and carefully. Characters I thought I would hate in this book, I loved. Characters I thought would be insignificant and broody, I loved. It's a sign of a great storyteller to manipulate your feelings from one page to the next. I am immediately downloading book 3! What a dangerously captivating world A.R. Invanovich has created!

It was as amazing as the first one. I was sucked into Katelyn's eyes and I truly felt her fears, sorrows, and contentment. It was incredible. Since I knew the social hierarchy of the Western Kingdom already, it was a bit of an easier read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Paperglass is an improvement in both story and writing quality from the first novel, Haven . However, it still struggles with its weak characters and YA tropes.

What keeps me going with the War of Princes series is the very interesting world-building. I really enjoy the setting, the magic system (although it feels under-developed), and the contrast of the idyllic Haven versus the rest of the world at war. I like that the author addresses the writing of history and how that shapes cultures and memories of events. The idea that a group of refugees have intentionally forgotten their past and have shaped their culture to remain that way is a fantastic topic, and one that I wouldn't expect from YA fantasy.

The idea is there, but the execution of it falls short. Ultimately, the writing feels immature. I know that I said the writing quality is improved from the first book - and it is- but it still has a long way to go. The first person perspective is a real detraction from this story. The main character is one-dimensional and never really presented with growth opportunities. And there is so much "OMG RUNE!!!" with no real relationship building that even actual teenagers would be grossed out.

I know I'm not the target audience for this story, but there are exceptional authors out there writing about complex topics and giving their characters tough choices to grow through while using evocative prose to get you to experience the story. They pull at your heartstrings, make you fall in love with the good guy or the bad guy, make you viscerally hate the antagonist, all while immersing you in a wonderfully developed setting. Leigh Bardugo comes to mind as someone who writes the heck out of a YA novel.

I'm continuing with the series quite frankly because the books are easy reads (especially if you skim all the eye-rolling tropey bits) and I'm a completionist.

The first book took me on a new adventure. The second book (this one) continued the adventure. I could and would not stop reading it. My eyes got so tired but that didn't stop me. I would take a break and play a small game on my Kindle and then get back to reading. Wouldn't you know the end of the book came faster then I wanted and then suddenly I'm on book 3 and then I read book 4 as slowly as possible. I didn't want it to end. As we all know all good things much come to an end. I still find myself wanting to go back and finish reading it though I've already done so and it's already been a few days since I have finished that last book. I so got over they were only in their late teens and early twenties.
Do yourself a favor allow you time to read them slow and get to know who's who. Though you learn from book to book who is who it is still a good idea to take your time.
I've read many books. I find it difficult to remember stories from new authors. A. R. Ivanovich knocked my reading socks off. I loved every single character and they stayed true to their nature. Their personalities were spot on and so deep too. I could say more but then I might give something away and I am so trying to not go there. Where I will go is this..... I wished I could buy the books for you. They are just that good!! Also, I've left many reviews before. I can honestly say I have never left one as heartfelt as this one. Thanks for listening.

Outstanding sequel! I loved every bit of this story. You have already seen the summary, so I'll just explain what I especially liked. The MC, Kat, is a practical, get on-with-it sort of girl, who makes the very best decisions she can under enormous pressure. The plot is so energetic and engaging, that there is just never a dull moment, but there is still character development happening along the way! The world of Breakwater and Chapel Hill are described well enough that the reader can relate to the action, but no unnecessary time is spent with descriptive passages. The contrast is again made between Haven and the outside world, with even more at stake now. Read this book after Haven or you'll be missing so much information that it won't be very engaging.

This continues to be a good series, well-paced, and the characters are developing—especially Rune—he’s come a long way from the dragoon he was in the first book. Very interesting developments as to the safety of Haven and of Breakwater. Katelyn learns about her mother, and she and her friends rescue Professor Block and learn some truths about Haven. Hmmm. I am so glad I have all of these to read at once!

The journey continues

Going straight into this book from the first one I was already captivated by the story. The author did a great job picking up the story right where the first book ended. And the characters just get better! Needless to say I am hooked without a doubt and flew through this book and can't wait to start the next book. So that's what I'm going to do right now! On to the third book I go!

I really loved the details in Paperglass. I felt like it gave a decent amount of history for the world that A.R. Ivanovich has built. It is fast-paced and action-packed, and while I enjoyed the characters the details are what really sold me on this book. Of the few Steampunk themed books I've read, this is easily one of the best in terms of details.

A stunning sequel!

I loved the first book and the second did not disappoint! Kat found her way back home to Haven, but she couldn't stay long. She journeys back to Breakwater with her friends to save a scouting troop that didn't return. Danger, heartache, betrayal, and love. So intense! Can't wait for the 3rd!

This may seem silly but...

Ok I just want to say how I appreciate how the author cuts out a lot of immature drama. I mean most of the side characters are mature enough that they see things pretty clearly for what they are and they cut through the crap. I like it.

Not as shocking...

I enjoyed the 1st book thoroughly, but this second installment felt anticlimactic and I expected more in the end. It was a little funny at times, but it doesn't disappoint as it adrenaline pumping in the beginning and middle parts.

Much better than the first!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I did the first. Kate's a great character. She's not completely fearless, but she's determined to do what needs to be done and I really like that about her. Can't wait to get started on the next one!

My complaint went away

As I was reading I remember thinking I would have to complain in my review about Eddie and the weather tower. BUT now it all makes sense and my complaint is no more. What is left to say other than I enjoyed another great story?!

I've been on the hunt for another good series that captures your attention until you finish it and this series definitely does that!

After narrowly escaping the war-torn outside world with her life, Katelyn Kestrel vows to never again venture beyond the mountains of Haven Valley. But just as Katelyn begins to prepare for life after high school—a normal life with no warring princes, no dangerous magical abilities, and no handsome, duty-bound soldiers—the outside world comes crashing into her reality once again.

A team of explorers from Haven has been captured by Prince Raserion, the leader of the Western Kingdom. Only Katelyn, with her remarkable ability to find anything she looks for, can hunt the team down and bring them home. And only Katelyn knows just how much trouble the explorers—and all of Haven—are in . . .

The princes have been searching for Haven and its people for seven hundred long years. Like it or not, Katelyn must go back to the outside world and rescue the captives, or witness the destruction of everything she’s ever loved.

After the events of Haven, Katelyn is looking for a stress-free life. Even though she feels a bit disconnected and pines for Rune, she realizes that things were for the best and is ready to move forward. Now, a year later, she is pushed back into that hell, when she is sent on a mission to retrieve a government operative who is trapped in the outside world. This series, I have gathered so far, is a lot of adventure and so this time we have a sea-faring quest, with a literal flying (okay, hovering) ship. Unfortunately, she also has tag-along which she didn't want, but is now responsible for. This chapter in the saga takes them to the front-lines of the war, a place where a Margrave exists and so does the Shadow Prince, making it very dangerous for her if someone were to discover her real identity. Masquerading as a Historian, she sees with her own eyes how the Dragoons are trained and conditioned, and sees the real brutality up close

Our main character, Katelyn, is a strong smart girl - someone who is intent on doing the right thing. So when she thinks her estranged mother is trapped in the hellish outside, she sets out alone to retrieve her. When she goes undercover and mingles with the Margrave, she tries to find some shred of humanity in her. When she sees Rune trapped along with his fellow rebels, she goes to rescue him even though she would be in greater danger if caught. For all her powers, she is still vulnerable to the Commands. And discovering the truth about her home and the people there, and that of her mother, would have discouraged any person, but she endeavors to save her home and the tormented people in the outside world. This book also gives us more about Haven, and getting that explanation was good, because it was getting a little incredulous at first. About Rune, I am still not convinced about how his character is built; there are inconsistencies and their romance is anything but organic. Overall I would say, read for the story, adventure and the thrills - that's where it excels.

I finally finished this book after weeks of trying to make it through. I have to say, while the beginning of Dragoon drags, the end is well worth the effort.

I found the first book in this series, Haven, on a random Amazon search and was instantly hooked. Haven was well-written, intriguing, had snappy dialogue, and lovable characters. I was quite thrilled to find such a gem.

Because of this I had high hopes for Dragoon, and was a bit disappointed—but only for the first couple of chapters. The start of the book felt disjointed and the dialogue was stale. I had a hard time connecting with Kat again, and remembering the minor characters of Ruby and Sterling. It was also difficult to make peace with the dramatic shift in Dylan's character from book one. I don't want to include spoilers, but let's just say his personality and "good/bad" characterization does a lot of flip-flopping in these two books.

The action begins not too far along into the story, which is helpful in a second book. And once things get rolling the reader is able to get sucked into the story-line again. Once I had pushed through the rough parts, I found myself loving Dragoon. You quickly want to know what's going on with Rune, will he and Kat ever reunite, how will Dylan play out his new role, and will the town of Haven remain hidden from the evil rest of the world?? By the climax of the novel I was staying up late into the night to read. I won't say that this book is as good as The Hunger Games, but there are elements of it that come close. The way that Ivanovich describes what the outer world has become and how they will sacrifice even innocent children on their quest for power and dominance, harkens back to many of the Hunger Games themes.

The steampunk elements are fun, but not super integral to the story as other steampunk novels like, Leviathan, by Scott Westerfeld. I think the steampunk vibe helps certain parts of the plot flow and make for a more believable make-believe world, but overall am not blown away by them.

The characters of Rune, Kat, Carmine, Sterling, and even Dylan were all fleshed out wonderfully. And I hope that in book three there will be a bit more of Ruby, she always seems to get thrown on the back-burner. The evil Prince and the Margrave were sufficiently evil and terrifying, and the climax is a nail-biter.

I give this four stars, despite the slow beginning chapters, because the rest of the book is truly an enjoyable read! Well done.

This is the second book in the series and is a fantasy novel for young adults and up.

Katelyn has returned to her seemingly normal life in Haven and graduation day has arrived. The celebrations are disturbed by a man intent on destroying the weather station and yelling about paperglass. This means that Katelyn's hope of the outside world not interfering in her safe valley is dashed. She is recruited as a field agent by Haven's Hall of Defense to go back to the outside world and use her ability of the Pull to find a team that had gone through earlier but have vanished. One of whom was Katelyn's real mother. Ensnared in the war again, she is joined by old friends and new acquaintances who become comrades. And as always, she adds many villains to her list of enemies. Will she find paperglass in time to protect her valley from the dangers that face it?

Book 2 started off a little slowly for me but picked up the pace and added its importance to the story. I'm enjoying the way that the bits making up the story are revealed and how they are combining to make cohesive sense. As new abilities manifest themselves we learn how they all work together as cogs in the machine. Kat and Rune's story gets taken further but I'm hoping that more of Rune and Ruby's stories will be explained. You can sense that they play more important roles so hopefully more background will be offered later. I like how Kyle comes into his own in this book and how assumptions about Dylan in the first book are proved right and wrong. The historian and airship aspects were interesting additions. New villains like Margrave Hest and her training regime of the children showed a chilling new dimension in the callous way people are treated in the outside world.

A great story which adds to the series in its own right and is not just a carry through to the next book. Enjoyable but I wasn't blown away.

Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review the book.
