Prinča Filipa gadsimts

Rate this book

I felt emotional reading about Prince Philip’s life and what a remarkable life it has been. From the day he was born, Prince Philip has been a talking point for not conforming (he was born on the kitchen table). He has always been the one to stand out. I had to smile at his antics, which brought my memories back of him in the news.

I liked how the book was set out, and how it explained the family tree of Prince Philp. His life as a child was filled with tragic heart-breaking events that would later divide his family. He overcame so much and threw his life into the Navy, which he loved all of his life. He had ambitions, which, would never be fulfilled as he did his duty for Queen and Country.

This book isn’t a one-sided account of a perfect Prince it bears all, a word spoken out of place, confidences broken and at times errors of judgement. He was human and was in the constant eye of the press. You can bet that not every good deed appeared in the papers, but every wrong foot was, it sells more. This book gives a perfect balance of both. I did feel sorry for Prince Philip as it must have been hard to know who he could talk to without his opinions appearing as front-page news.

There are plenty of stories, about other members of the Royal family, he was quite a family man in his later years. It comes across that he was the healer in the family, trying to bring people back together or being there for them. Hurt was evident, he was not one to be crossed and would let it be known.

I can’t recommend this book enough, as it has touched me hugely. I have laughed and cried while reading the book. We have lost a tremendous man as a nation, I can’t imagine the loss his family and the Queen must feel.

I received a paperback edition of this book from the publisher but I also purchased the e-book.

Copy kindly received from New South Books for an honest review.

I'm in the process of reading this one slowly, around other books, but this is an interesting look into Prince Philip's life and one that I think many Royalists and fans will enjoy. Particularly given that this is written by Rob Jobson who has always had much insight into royal life.

Will update this review as I read more.

Prince Philip's Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke of Edinburgh by Robert Jobson is an excellent biography of a fascinating, complex, and remarkable man that kept me entertained from beginning to end.

I have read quite a bit about the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh while reading several biographies on the royal family, but this was a great addition that seemed to pull a wonderful narrative together from a number of different sources that was smooth, coherent, intriguing, and had an easy flow. There were a few tidbits that I had forgotten about, and I was glad I was able to read a more comprehensive book that focused on Prince Philip as the central point of focus.

A great biography that I thoroughly enjoyed.

In depth biography focussing primarily on Prince Philip, covering his life and upbringing, and the effects of the changing political climate in shaping his life, including the coronavirus pandemic and his relationship with Princess Diana.

The author has reported on the Royal family for newspapers such as The Sun, The Daily Express and The Evening Standard, and has authored and co-authored several books about the Royal family. He uses his experience and contacts to pepper the facts he collates with anecdotes he has witnessed or which have been relayed to him.

Can be prone to repetition which adds to the feel of wading through at times, although the chapter demarcations do help. Includes some interesting information, but the clearly partisan perspective raises questions.

If it had been possible I would have given 3.5 Stars.
I found this a most interesting and relatively balanced book - admitting flaws and quirks but there was so much emphasise on other people ( which I understand to a degree ) but I feel this work should have been much more ( selfishly ? ) focussed on HRH Prince Philip...
Glad I read it but will look for other works with more of just him.

I did learn some interesting facts which I previously knew nothing of.

I listened to this on Audible, and quit after 5hrs (40%). I already knew a lot about Phillip and didn’t learn anything new. Too much detail on matters unrelated to Phillip the person, seemed more like a compilation of reported material without managing to bring him to life. Maybe partly the reader, who droned on and on.

Prince Philip passed away last April, just at that time it was reported that a new book by Philip was coming out: Prince Philip’s Century 1921-2021. A book that interested me. So that book had to be purchased. However, it took quite a while for the book to hit the doormat here. The book highlights the century of Prince Philip. It has become a compelling biography, in which the author leaves nothing to chance. He introduces us to a young Prince Philip, his Greek background, his military career, his first loves, the dramas in his younger years and of course the acquaintance with then Princess Elizabeth.

However, the book shows much more of Prince Philip. It leaves A captivating portrait of a husband, father, husband and rock for Queen Elizabeth. As a reader, you can’t imagine what it must have been like for a man with ambitions to always be three steps behind the Queen for so long. Nevertheless, the book teaches us that Philip has also been able to do his own thing, such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award and the establishment of the now worldwide known World Wildlife Fund.

The author not only highlights the beautiful side, but also the less pleasant sides of Philip. Sometimes hurtful statements. Philip didn’t mince his words, he said what he thought. Sometimes it was painful, sometimes laughable. His role as a father is also discussed in detail, especially his difficult relationship with Charles, but also his later relationship with Princess Diana. Everything is examined closely, the positive sides as well as the less beautiful sides of Philip. Yes, Prince Philip too was just a human being like anyone else.

Robert Jobson has an accessible way of writing, which makes this biography fairly easy to read. In addition, it also comes across well visually, yes, you can see it pass you by as if it were a documentary. Robert Jobson also knows how to hold the reader’s attention from start to finish. In the past few months I’ve read several books about Philip, so I was afraid it would be much of the same. That turned out not to be the case with Prince Philip’s Century 1921-2021. This book is a well-developed biography, which gives a good view of the impressive life of the late Prince Philip.

In summary: A complete biography of Prince Philip. Fascinating and certainly educational. After reading this book, the reader can only bow deeply to Prince Philip, to his devotion to a country, his duty and the Queen. Also, a compliment to Robert Jobson who has created something fantastic with good research. A book that every lover of the English royal family should definitely have on their bookshelf.

Robert Jobson is a seasoned royal correspondent and possesses excellent knowledge of his subject matter. "Prince Philip's Century: The Extraordinary Life of the Duke of Edinburgh" shows Jobson's deep knowledge of the recently-deceased consort to the Queen. Jobson is a wry and talented writer. The book is at its best when he shares new and insightful anecdotes about Philip. For example, Jobson shares the story of an early morning at Balmoral where Philip did not want a protection officer to join him on a deer stalking expedition, how the Queen heard Philip yelling and using foul language, opened her window and inquired what was the matter. Unfortunately, much of the book is a rehashing of very familiar material from the earlier portions of Philip's life. I wish that Jobson had concentrated more on the past twenty-five years. There are chunks of the book that aren't really about Philip; they are about other members of the Royal Family. Jobson eventually brings Philip in, but I couldn't help but wonder if this was a cut and paste job where he used material from prior books. All in all, a well done biography of Philip and his extraordinary life as the Queen's consort.

A compelling portrait of the late Duke of Edinburgh and his remarkable place and many contributions to the British monarchy throughout the 20th century. Robert Jobson, the Godfather of Royal Reporting, has given us the well rounded biography of a long life dedicated to the throne despite having to stand 3 steps behind in its shadows. A captivating portrait of a husband, a father and the unfailing support he has given to his wife and Queen during her long and eventful reign. Richly detailed and often humorous, this delightful and entertaining biography of the Windsor's patriarch should definitely be welcomed by any reader interested in British and European royalties. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Ad Lib for this wonderful ARC

I found this a superbly written and captivating account of the life of Prince Philip, I was completely absorbed and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
There is so much detail but it is written in such an engaging style that it was easy to read and is full of information that I did not know about a life incredibly lived.
Im still smiling at the snippet about 'the diminutive Queen' always being the goalie in family football games!
A beautiful read about an amazing man who devoted his life to duty, the Queen and the country, while remaining true to himself. Rest in peace Sir.

This book was one of the most interesting books I’ve read in a long time. The author included so many facts I hadn’t read or heard about before. I’ve loved England since spending a month there with my late husband in 2013. England was the home of my ancestors, which made me very interested in English history and current events. I enjoyed learning more about Prince Philip; I like his sense of humor that’s so unique. The author made me feel as though I knew the Prince personally. I’ve recommended this book to several friends and family. I hope it is highly successful.

This was an enjoyable and informative read. It gave plenty of background on the royal family as a whole, rather than just concentrating on Prince Philip and I felt it could have focused more on him. It gave large amounts of detail about the early days and it was a shame that it seemed to rush past the later years. I certainly feel greater warmth for him and admiration for the relationship between him and the Queen. There was plenty to smile about in this book and it has made me want to read more about the royals.

I will admit, reading four different Prince Philip biographies in the span of four months feels a tad excessive, but I can't at least feel confident in what I know about him! Johnson's biographies are always solid, and this is no exception. I appreciated that this is quasi-chronological but does move around by theme, too. It sets it apart from other biographies, and Jobson can highlight things clearly this way!

For me it was a book of two halves. The earlier part of his life is covered in a lot of interesting detail and the second half seems to lack that same level of detail. The second half seemed to give a broader history of the time with less focus on Philip. He lived and was in a position to have first hand experience of some of the major events in the UK. Really enjoyed the book overall and felt it was an honest attempt to describe his life.

This book felt like it was rushed to publication following the death of the Duke. It went off subject at times for pages at a time. I’ve never read a biography that spent pages of the book talking about other people or situations. There were also times where the passages seemed cut and pasted into other chapters. If it was revised for further editions, it could truly be a definitive work.

It reads as a biography of The Queen made sound like one of Philip without doing the work to actually give his own life and views in it much thought. Also the English Audio narrator who is a man thinks he need to try a ridiculous voice for The Queen.
