Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

To be honest, I've only read a handful of books by Basheer, but everytime I read one, I'm bound to enjoy it thoroughly. Bhargaveenilayam, was also just like that.
Bhargaveenilayam tells the story about a writer, who is coming to live in a haunted house, the so called Bhargaveenilayam(bangalow of Bhargavi). Unlike the rest of the villagers the writer doesn't beleive that the house is haunted, or rather he doesn't believe that the ghost is going to haunt him. After hearing several anecdotes by the villagers, the writer decided to write a story about Bhargavi. Not the general story that Bhargavi committed suicide, but another one with a completely different twist.
The second half of the book follows the story written by the writer in the novel and we get to know what really happened to Bhargavi.
Bharagveenilyam is actually a screenplay of the movie of the same name. For readers who belong to this generation like me, might be having a hardtime accepting the fact that the movie is a horror story. But I'd say that's just because things have changed a lot from the time Basheer wrote this novel and now. Like the story is set in a different timeline and many of the things in the book were considered spooky then.
All in all Bhargaveenilayam is a worthy read by Basheer, who artfully combined traces of horror and humour into a beautiful book or as you can call it, a screenplay.

Being a recent admirer and not having read much of his works, I came upon this work by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, thinking perhaps he had chosen a different approach for this book of his. As it went on, I realized that this is the screenplay adaptation for the movie based on the original book, 'Neela Velicham.' But little did that discovery steal away the fun and good time I had reading his exquisite work! Although the book is in the horror-thriller genre, the scares and spooky incidents may not imbibe the intended fear in today's readers as our concept of horror has drastically changed over time. Yet it is a reminder of the great works that had entertained readers for years, and his writing still keeps an exciting tone to the dialogue delivery and character building. The characters like Cheriya Pareekanni and Kuthiravattam Pappu are hard to find nowadays and unique in their statuses.

Bhargaveenilayam, the abandoned mansion that our novelist or protagonist chose to live in, is considered haunted by the locals and thus unfit to live in. The owner and namesake for the mansion, the beautiful and charming Bhargavi, and her untimely death cause extreme fear among the people. But these warnings and tell tales fall upon deaf ears, and our novelist pays no heed to these and continues to live there peacefully.

The story then progresses with the novelist deciding to write Bhargavi's story. Though Bhargavi never materializes in front of the writer, her angry outbursts like throwing away irrelevant pages in the well leave behind clues when an incident in her story moves away from reality. Our novelist succeeds in piecing together a story and concludes what really happened in Bhargavi's life. The story ends with unraveling the incidents leading to her death and finally giving meaning to her life, bringing about peace to the mansion and Bhargavi.

DC Books have a reputation in India, being the first Indian publishing house to get an ISO Certification. And I must say they deserve it. I bought this book at a local DC book store and it was worth the effort.
This isn't a novel. Be warned. It is a screenplay. Yes, the ones that are used for making movies. And so, those who are quite well adapted to the format of a novel might feel the screenplay format a bit difficult to go by. That was the case with me, but I got over it very soon. This was my first read of a work by Basheer. A long introductory passage in the beginning really bored me well. I feel the publisher should try to abridge it a bit cause it is unusually long for a preface or an introduction to a book.
Bhargaveenilayam is a gem in the history of Malayalam Literature. Basheer has this unusual gift of chaning tones while the story progresses. I would not call this a horror plot, but a more of a rommor, that is a portmanteau of Romantic and Horror. The Sahityakaaran does his part well. The story ends on a satisfying note. Since being a screenplay, you start visualizing the scenes as you see them on the silver screen, which is a bit distracting, but good for the ending note. The characters of Pappu, Noolan Paramu, Ramdas and others are all your insane Mallu characters you see in your life. Bhargaveenilayam, though has been translated into a number of languages, it must be emphasised here that the connection that the characters tend to make with the readers strenghten if the readers themselves are Keralites. Get yourself a copy of this to feel the horror born out of an unfulfilled love !

An average thriller, but should be a great attempt in that era of Malayalam cinema.

This horror/thriller is below par considering Basheer's other wonderful works. The story of Sasikumar and Bhargavi felt too dragged, but still a decent read.

Basheer and his genius.
But very curious to see how the movie adaptation/remake will work in these times. Most of the lines will feel outdated I feel. But nonetheless, it was a fascinating read!!
