Call of the Canyon, second of the Waiting for Dusk series, continues the dramatic story of Kate Roberts and Drew Kelly. New challenges face the couple when Drew joins Kate in the present. Nothing is easy. Tyson's still their nemesis, causing trouble whenever he can. Carl, Kate's friend and neighbor, moves back home to Ohio and creates unexpected problems at the canyon. A wedding, a tragic accident, and a family broken by scandal affect both the past and present. And in the end, Kate may pay the ultimate price.
Waiting For Dusk Series Book 1: Waiting For Dusk Book 2: Call of the Canyon
For three decades, Nancy taught elementary school. She'd written short stories as a child, kept a diary and loved the writing process. After retiring, she hadn’t set out to become an author, but when inspiration struck, she couldn’t resist putting pen to paper. She now had time to follow her dream. Today her writing spans various genres, including young adult, historical romance, romantic suspense and cozy mysteries.
Nancy lives with her husband, Ron, and has a married son, who helps her with tech more than he likes! Plus, add in a wonderful daughter-in-law and grandson which makes her life complete.
This book is even better than Waiting for Dusk. It explores in more depth the effects of time travel on people's lives. It is exciting and has many plot twists. Kate and Drew are still very much in love. Ty is still up to his old tricks. Carl Johnson travels back to the Canyon and stirs up some trouble without thinking. Spunky 100 year old Anna is still the best confidant and advisor. Lindsey is ever the loyal best friend. This Grand Canyon continues to be the backdrop of the story and is an intriguing aspect of the story. Even if you didn't read Waiting for Dusk, you can enjoy this book although I highly recommend that you read both!! Can't wait for the third and final book!!
I was eager to read this next installment in the Waiting for Dusk series. It did not disappoint. As always, the characterizations of the main characters Kate and Drew come through very well, and both characters are likable, believable for the most part, and enjoyable to watch. I liked the secondary characters as well, though there are far more in this book in the previous, both in modern day, AND in the year 1927, where anyone going back in time always ends up.
I did not like Tyson’s character—as in the first book—and don’t understand why it takes everyone who sees his stalking of Kate to act to protect her. He is a really good main villain, handsome on the outside and ruthlessly selfish and violent in his actions.
The plot was wonderful, the romantic scenes worthy of many elicited sighs, and the suspense thrilling enough so I read this book straight through in only a few days, because I had to know what was going to happen. The descriptions of the Roaring 20s were just right, enough to get me imagining that time perfectly without being bogged down by too much depiction.
I wish I'd written this review while the book was fresh in my mind!!!
Like the first book in the series, I give Call of the Canyon 4.5 stars.
We pick up right where Ms. Pennick left off at the end of Waiting For Dusk. Drew is now in Katie's time and Katie is over the moon. Her father has managed to get Drew set up staying with Katie's BFF Lyndsey's family. (Except she insists that everyone call her Kate now.)
So much happens in this book! Lots that I loved and some that I didn't care for.
I loved that Kate and Drew sort of had a happily ever after starting up, but I really don't see how any parents could let their 16 year old (immature) daughter get married. Even if it is a love across time, even if they don't get married in the present time... it just rubs me the wrong way.
That's about all the bad I can say about this book from what I remember.
There is so much depth that is added that wasn't there in the first. We learn more about how the time travelers actions affect the people in 1927. We learn that someone from the past is still alive and remembers Kate from her visits to the past, which was very, very cool! We learn more about Kate's parents as well as Maya and Carl. We even learn some secrets about Drew!
The ending? Oh boy! You are in for a ride. Katie and Drew are put to the ultimate test and it truly is a matter of life or death.
If you want to find out if Drew and Kate get their happily ever after you have to read the book! I absolutely recommend it.
Can't wait until the third book, Stealing Time is released!
Kate Roberts and Drew Kelly are in love. The only difficulty is Drew lives in the early 20th century and Kate lives in the 21st. You wouldn’t believe how many problems that can cause.
In the exciting sequel to ‘Waiting for Dusk’, Kate finds out a great deal more about her family and how they move between past and present. Despite the knowledge of how dangerous tinkering with the past can be, Kate’s father goes back to try to right a family tragedy. Worse still, her friend Carl also goes back and threatens to change the course of history. Will this interference mean that Kate will never be born? And, if so, what will happen to her 21st century self?
I’m not, as a rule, over-enamoured with sequels. Very often they lack the immediacy and power of the original. But Nancy Pennick pulls it off with this story. I thought it was just as enjoyable as ‘Waiting for Dusk’. The interplay between the 20th century and the 21st century characters is fascinating as each has to adjust to the other’s very different culture. We even have the dichotomy of one of the characters being alive in both centuries at the same time – a young girl in the 1920s and a very old lady in the early 21st century.
Ms Pennick’s writing style is uncluttered and very readable. I would recommend this series for anyone who enjoys something a little more interesting than run-of-the-mill romance.
