He wants his father dead.
He wants power.
He wants control...

....And he'll use me to get it.

Kade Sario was supposed to vicious and cruel. He was supposed to be a monster, to hurt and chastise me for the smallest things... but he didn't. I didn't understand it... until I found out what he really wanted from me.

He wants to use me. He wants to hold me high above the lion's den and wait for the strongest lion to offer him something he can use...

He won't hurt me and he won't take from me, but he keeps me close... So close I can smell him on my skin even when I'm alone. Growing up it was ingrained in me that I do whatever I can to please my Fortunate. It was ingrained in me that I be loyal and faithful, and that I love my Fortunate more than I love myself. I expected that I'd want to please him. I expected that I would be loyal and faithful, just like I was taught...

But I didn't expect to fall in love with him.

Time is running out. Things are changing, the balance of power is shifting and if I'm going to survive in this world, I need Master Kade on my side…

Seriously I don't get what the fucking point is of a sex scene with OW(a very detailed one at that), I'm sorry I just don't. Is it supposed to get me hot and bothered?knowing that he has got a big penis and knows how to use it, or am I supposed to be having some second hand jealousy? Which I do honestly get sometimes, but here I just felt icky reading it...
Honestly if I wanted a VERY detailed scene of a man fucking a woman(doesn't matter who)then I'd just watch fucking porn, instead of reading how fucking tight the woman(who is not heroine) is when he is supposed to fall in love with the fucking heroine! I mean okay...so he fucks OW, I don't like it but I sure as hell don't want to hear about it🤮😓😕

☆ I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you SO MUCH hun!! ☆

"Please don't let this become my home.

We're told the Sarios are the most brutal, the most unsympathetic, hard to handle family out of them all. If that's true, I might just entertain the idea of suicide if I'm chosen to live there."

Before reading this, here’s a brief history of the plot before the actual story begins:

Once upon a time the world was in chaos and four houses came together and set up a system to keep the peace. They were: the Miller, the Sarios, the Milanos, and the Knowle families. Each powerful in their right, the four founders became greedy for power and thus proclaimed themselves as the “Fortunates,” and became the dictating and power classes of the world, while all the others (except a handful of their finest friends) were known as the “Unfortunates”, the products of the poor and now serving slave class.

Every couple of months, when an Unfortunate turns 18, they are sold into one of the houses to serve for life. Whatever they ask or tell you to do, you do it or be punished/killed. If not chosen, you become a breeder to produce more Unfortunates and are killed right after.

This is the way of the Fortunates and Unfortunate life and there's nothing that anyone can say or do about it....UNTIL NOW...

So now, the story at present:

description
– Nine when sold to the Sarios house

Heir to the Sarios house and business empire, Kaden “Kade” Sarios, is a man both content and conflicted with the tainted idealisms of the world he grew up and lives in.

description

He receives Nine, our female protagonist, as a gift by his father on his 25th birthday and is instantly smitten with her captivating beauty (as are many of the other Fortunate men). He decides then to use her as his secret weapon of seduction to steadily become the most powerful house of the four founders.

But, that’s easier said when your Unfortunate is different from the others

“What made her stronger than the others? They were raised in the same place and yet Nine refused to cave to the same distress. It infuriated Kade. He wanted Nine to feel distressed, he wanted to make it worse and then better. He wanted her entire existence to revolve around him. Kade wanted her to despise him, to crave him-- even love him. He wanted to control the strings to her limbs like a puppet master. It was only to probe his own control to himself.”

And makes something stir in your soul and render your defenses.

description

What is Kade to do? How will he use her to his will while still retaining some sense of humanity?

description

And Nine. Will this feisty, resilient soul who’s been ingrained to please her Fortunate since birth ever have hope of freedom or solace? What with, Master Kade being different from the rest and actually treating her like a human being rather than just a worthless possession.

“I fight a smile. There he goes again, ensuring me that he’s different. That he’s not selfish or out to hurt me. He killed for me. I have the unwavering loyalty, his trust, his protection and maybe, I even have a small piece of his heart, too.”

But with Kade’s foreshadowing, malicious plans …

description

“He wants to use me. He wants to hold me high above the lion's den and wait for the strongest lion to offer him something he can use...”

How will it all turn out? Will Nine ever be possibly happy and free from her stationed way of life? Will she ever get Kade to admit his true feelings for her?

And Kade. Will he succeed and become sovereign over his family house and become the biggest power player in his league?...

description

Will he ever surrender his heart and soul to Nine, his kryptonite, his confidant and lover, and possibly his biggest downfall and quest to absolution?

description

Not to mention, when a shocking revelation of Nine’s past surfaces and changes everything, how will it all play out?

Read and you will find out!

My thoughts: #An explosive, out of the box read from author Skyla Madi! Definitely my favorite from her thus far!!♥♡

I loved the versatility and vulnerability of both characters and how they both compliment one another in such a dynamic manner. I always knew that there was some underlying factor behind Kade’s façade but when I found out more to him, I couldn’t help but feel for him and his plight for dominion and retribution.

As for Nine, her pliancy to never break was commendable and easy to sympathize with to a point where you’re literally cheering for her from the moment you meet her. She’s just that easy to love and to relate to. And just wait to you learn her own plot twist! It was like “holy sh*#!”. I was not expecting that!!

Gah, I can’t wait to see what awaits Kade and Nine in book two and to see the shifts of influence and loyalty between the four founding houses!! It will interesting to say the least with conflict and personal interests and obligations even now leering it’s presence into the mix. I can’t wait!!

This is dystopia like you've never seen it before.

Most dystopian novels can be read with ease as you're spoon-fed all the components you've come to expect from that genre.

Some grit.
Conflicted characters.
A futuristic setting, with shiny technology and underlying tensions.
Some kind of rebellion.
Some romance - normally a love triangle - to spice up things.
The death of someone close to the main protagonist.
A message of right vs wrong to take away at the end.

The Unfortunates is dystopia taken to the next level. It feels all the more real because it doesn't smooth over the gritty details, or try and pass off fantasy as reality. Skyla Madi focuses on the realities of her dystopian world and is not afraid to bring the shocking details to light and talk about them.

A book that is hard mentally and emotionally to read is a worthy book.

There are books that are hard to read because they aren't well-written. And then there are books that are hard to read because of how raw they are.

They bring you a perspective you've never considered, they shock you, and they draw you so far into their world that you have a sort of literary sensory overload. They're a challenge for you, personally, to read because you're expanding your literary experience.

These are books worth reading.

It's like lifting weights for your brain. The Unfortunates is one such book. Very reminiscent of author Nenia Campbell's raw style of writing (love her books!), The Unfortunates is a trailblazer, unique to the core. It lights the way for dystopian books with characters you don't necessarily like - complicated characters who aren't labelled as either good/bad but simply are.

Some parts of the book are hard to read because they hurt. They hurt because somewhere, deep down, we know that humans are more than capable of doing the horrible things we're reading about. The line between fiction and reality is blurred.

We read books like The Unfortunates and we see that this future presented to us by the author isn't as far-fetched as we believe it to be.

There are deep-rooted issues in our society that we need to face - rape, slavery, treatment of women, human rights, freedom of speech, autonomy, and more. Books like The Unfortunates are integral in bringing these issues to the attention of readers.

Combined with Skyla's irresistible writing style, The Unfortunates is a book you're not going to want to miss out on.

TITLE: The Unfortunates
SERIES: (Unfortunate, #1)
AUTHOR: Skyla Madi
GENRE: Science Fiction | Dystopia
RELEASE DATE: August 4th 2014
MY RATING: ★★★★★

I'm number nine and I have a tattoo behind my ear to prove it. Fortunates are the reason for my nightmares - the scariest things I can think of

Recommended by Katie on my friends list on here, yet again she found me a 5 star book, this is the second book I've read of this authors and freaking heck why has it taken me so long to get on the fan girling band wagon..

In my mind, I pictured my master to be fat and old, everything Master Kade was not. He's strong, beautiful which makes him absolutely terrifying.

I am fast becoming a huge fan of this authors and can't wait to get my grubby little hands on the next book in this series!! Not a genre I would normally jump on but it's so well written that I found myself just eating up the pages..Freaking loved this book!!

When our eighteenth birthday comes around we're sold to the Fortunates as slaves, we are the Fortunates property from birth

If you don't get chosen before you turn nineteen, they force you into sexual relations with the other Unfortunates and once your're pregnant, the daddy is killed, and once you give birth you get a bullet to the back of the head.

None of us have parents, there is no happy ending, alot of us die before we turn fourteen, be it from sickness, murder or suicide, and those that are bought by a Fortunate will live in constant fear, death is the nicest thing you can wish on someone in my world

Don't ever make eye contact with a Fortunate unless they address you directly

Number Nine always had an inquisitive nature, always questioned things, never showed fear, and never bowed down to her master..

Towards Nine, he needed to remain detached, cold. He didn't know how, but Nine had a strange way of making him feel inclined to protect her, to comfort her.

It was only in darkness that he found himself truly at peace

I'm going to teach you how to seduce a man. I'm going to teach you how to tease and please a man, and you're going to use that knowledge to help me.

A sit on the edge of your seat ending that still days later has me questioning what's going to come next!!

5 Stars:

I have to be honest here. I didn't think I would be able to finish the book. Madi I didn't a realistic job in this futuristic tale of painting a story only covered in overlapping shades of black and grey. What is more damming is the horrors the tale spins from.

It's beyond obvious the inspiration came from our own human past. It also calls the question, will we ever learn from our past or are we doomed to repeat it?

In 'The Unfortunates' the answer is blindingly obvious. Not only does man kind repeat the mistakes of the past but over up more to the carnage. In this reality, everyone is a slave with the exceptions of the four families. Where the only valued life is that of the four families. The others; male, female, black, white... all disposable. My burning curiosity, which in this world would have me killed is... the city.

Only the heads of the four families lives in the city. Could it be these depraved four families built a cult of horror to fulfill their twisted minds? Will the outside world come to the rescue of the Unfortunates and punish the fortunate?

I have many, many questions and even more conclusions. I can't wait for book two to drop!

Wow. Words escape me as to how unbelievable this book was. I have read several things by Skyla Madi, and am a huge fan of hers, but this was very different than anything else I've read by her. I was so excited to start this book but hesitant at the same time. The story line is very different. I am a person who loves a ‘real’ story line…one that could take place anywhere and anytime. So I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get into this one as much. Boy was I wrong. I could not put the book down. If I didn’t have my kindle, I had my phone. If I didn’t have those I was on my computer reading it.

The Unfortunates are people born and bred into a life of slavery. They are raised in a compound and allowed only the very minimal to survive. Their life has one purpose only, and that is to service the Fortunates. The Fortunates are a group of wealthy families who have built their own community. They abide by their own rules and hold themselves higher than anyone else.

These girls aren’t my enemy. It’s not their fault they’re broken. Most of them already are by the time the leave here. I wouldn’t say I’m broken…I’ve always had hope. I can’t put it into words…but I know I see the world in a way that is all my own.

Nine. Not just a number, a person. Nine has grown up in the Unfortunate compound among hundreds of others her entire life. She has no family; no friends, no hobbies and no real vision of what it truly means to live. Despite all that, she is positive and strong. One of the strongest females I’ve read about. Her life is shit but at least she knows what to expect. Now that she is eighteen that is all about to change. Once an Unfortunate turns eighteen they are eligible to be sold to the Fortunates for them to use as they see fit. Most don’t last long. Their lives are expendable. They misbehave or speak out of turn, it means a bullet to the head. Simple as that.

When Nine gets sold to one of the most ruthless families she is terrified but doesn’t let it show. She is a gift. A possession given to Kade, from his father, as a twenty-fifth birthday present. Despite the instant attraction to her beauty, Kade doesn’t want it…doesn't want her. But after some thought he realizes he could put her to good use and use her as a pawn to get what truly matters in life to him. Money and Power. With her as his bargaining chip, he will become the head of the family.

Nine is strong. I admired her will to fight and her outlook on life. I loved that she took joy in the simplest of things. She stood up for what she believed in as much as she could. I absolutely loved her sassiness and quick tongue towards Kane at times. She is very outspoken, a trait that is almost always deadly when it comes to an Unfortunate. But there is something about Kane that brings it out in her and she can’t help herself.

He looks like sin…like the smirk on his mouth was hand painted by the devil himself. It does crazy things to me…cause my cheeks burn bright and my flood follow suit.

Kade sees something in Nine that is different from the other Unfortunates. She brings out the worst in him but also somewhat, reemerges the human in him. Humanity is a word, a feeling that he hasn’t thought of in years. What’s the point of acting like a normal human being when all his life he was punished for trying to be ‘good’ and do the right thing? He has been born into a ruthless powerful family and the only way to survive was to become just like the rest of them, cold, callous and heartless.

Until her. Kade is unlike the rest and Nine starts to look at him differently. She feels things she has never felt and it terrifies her. Kade refuses to acknowledge that the relationship he has with Nine is anything more than just the normal Fortunate/Unfortunate relationship. It can’t be more. It would be dire for them both. He has his place and she has hers. Lines are blurry already and he refuses to mix them completely.

This story is a battle of belonging and surviving. Two people who know only one way to survive and they couldn’t be farther apart from one another. But being forced together they discover things about themselves and each other that they have never found before. The intensity and chemistry between Kade and Nine was irrepressible from the very start, no matter how much they each denied it.

Nine’s determination to actually live her own life, whether it be years or minutes, is overpowering. She wants to be free and know what it’s like not to live under the thumb of a Fortuntate. Kades desires for power are irrefutable and take control of his ability have any feelings for Nine, his Unfortunate.

This is one of my top reads of 2014. The unique storyline pulled me in and held me captivated long after I finished reading it. It's fast paced yet detailed and its filled with so much story and drama that you will not want to put it down. It is a darker story line but I would not classify it as a full dark romance.

The next book THE FORTUNATES cannot come soon enough. This did end in a cliffhanger but not a horrible one. None the less, that does nothing to quench my desire for the next book asap.

Skyla Madi outdid herself. The storyline, the characters... every detail, thought and spoken word were perfectly executed.

“I will not ask your permission for anything, if you don’t want me to touch you, take the blindfold off now and we can try again later. Once I start, I won’t stop until your body is shaking and you’re panting my name.”

Oh my gawd!! That was incredible!
Okay, so before I rant on about how amazing this book is, I'll just give a bit of background.
The Unfortunates is set in the future, time has swiftly moved on and the world that now exists is cruel and controlled. After crazy wars that have wiped out nearly all human life on earth, Amongst those remaining are four strangers who come together and rebuild society. Eventually they decide, they deserve some recognition and gratitude for their part in rebuilding the society that is now flourishing. They wanted everyone to have a place, and for them to be above them all, reaping the benefits of their hard work. Out of this came the four founding houses, who would rule. With a selection of their closest friends, they would be called the Fortunates, everyone else would be the Unfortunates and basically were the lower class, which eventually led to them all being slaves and having no life of their own.
The system was twisted and cruel for the Unfortunates, and opulent and privileged for the Fortunates. Yet for some reason it seemed to stick.
On to our main character, Nine. The story starts on her 18th birthday and the day she is selected to become an Unfortunate that serves one of the four houses. Either as a personal Unfortunate; a gift to a Fortunate, to do with as they pleased. Or an Unfortunate who worked in the house and grounds, a general slave really. From when they are born up till the age of 18, the Unfortunates are in a cross between an orphanage and a work house. They barely talk to each other and have no privileges, rules and lessons are ground in to them, preparing them for life as an Unfortunate and how to keep the Fortunates happy and satisfied.
So, Nine (the number given to her as an Unfortunate, now her name) is chosen as gift for the son of the Sario house.

'We're told the Sarios are the most brutal, the most unsympathetic, hard to handle family of them all. If that's true, I might just entertain the idea of suicide if I'm chosen to live there.'

Possibly, the worst house that she could of been placed in. She is now the eldest son Kade's, personal Unfortunate. Which means, she is his property and possession to do with, exactly how he chooses. She is really his slave, in all sense of the word. Maybe she got the long straw, maybe she got the short. Kade Sario is 25, darkly gorgeous, brooding and a formidable Master to have. On first impressions, he is going to be hard, deadly and dangerous to get on the wrong side of, perhaps he still is by the end. Without giving anything away, it's hard to tell Kade's motives. I'm torn between thinking I have him sussed, then he will do something and I'm stunned by his actions and have no clue again. One thing I will say, he is stubborn. Fortunates have such a role to play and ideal to live up to, just like the Unfortunates. For some of them, it comes easy, within their blood to rule with an iron fist and make sure everyone knows their place and who they are. Yet for others, they are playing the part they were born in to. It doesn't matter what is right or wrong in that world, you follow the rules in your place. Kade, is the latter. He knows who he is and what is expected of him, yet he struggles with conscience. Sometimes he can ignore it and keep the mask on, other times he can't. His new Fortunate is a distraction when he doesn't need or want one. He has to keep his eye on the ball, he will be next in line to run the Sario house and business and power come first. Although Nine, isn't wanted or needed by Kade, she soon proves to get under his skin. Not only is she stunning and stands out from other Unfortunates, she acts nothing like one either. She is feisty and chances her luck time and time again. He doesn't want to use her for himself but he will not allow others to have her either.

"Possession?" He stands up and quickly fingers the buttons to his shirt, exposing a sliver of his bare chest with every single one. "Yes, you are mine. You wear my crest. I own you."

The tension between Kade and Nine is sizzling and electric, right from their very first meeting. One of the most amazing things about his book, is the fact that nothing was instant. Except the attraction of course. Yet, it was dragged out until I was dying of frustration just reading it. There was no insta-sex, nothing was too much or too soon. It was perfectly dragged out so that the reader is dying each time they come close to each other. Just from a small touch. It was excellent. Prolonging the inevitable but increasing the desire for it to happen. The relationship between them was incredible. She pushed just enough to test him, to keep him on his toes and stop him from going soft. He always kept that edge to him, that made him dangerous and unpredictable. I couldn't fault the characters at all.
The overall opinion of mine on this book is, quite hard to describe just how amazing I found it. Of course I'll try. ;) I had never read anything like this before. I had read some dystopian and stacks of erotic romance/erotica. Putting them both together for me was like a new toy, I had to experience it, not knowing whether I would like it or not but I was intrigued by the synopsis. I'm so glad I did. It's been the greatest surprise for me in ages. Nothing is boring or repetitive, no re-used storylines or common main characters. It was all new, fresh and totally addictive. The only problem now is waiting for the next book. The ending was quite a shocker, in a good way but left me screaming to have more. Skyla Madi is a new author to me, but since reading this I'm totally hooked by her writing style and captivating characters. I'll have to go read her other books while I impatiently wait for the next book in this series. :)
5 very fortunate stars!

How had I not been familiar with the writing of Skyla Madi before??? She is fan-freaking-tastic and an Aussie too!

After experiencing a really bad run of unsatisfying and frankly, boring dystopia/futuristic novels I went into this book with incredibly low expectations. However, it took me completely by surprise, held me in its grip from first to last page and left me desperately wanting to get my hands on book 2!

Madi built a horrible futuristic world, she carved out a compelling story, created intriguing characters and balanced it with the perfect amount of drama, love, angst, romance, lies and betrayal.

I'm sure not everyone will agree, but, whilst reading The Unfortunates I actually felt like The Selection, Divergent, Throne of Glass and Fifty Shades of Grey got together, had a baby (a really really hot baby) and this was the result. It had elements from all my favourite genres that were mixed together so well and delivered perfectly.

Set in the future where the new world is split into 3 classes - The Fortunates who are renowned for their cruelty rule and live a life of privilege. The moderators who are a "cross breed" of the highest and lowest class are tasked with enforcing the laws on behalf of the Fortunates. And on the very bottom, The Unfortunates who are born into slavery. Raised in camps and taught their place until they turn eighteen when they are sold to Fortunates as slaves - either as a servants or for their personal use. An Unfortunate has no rights and only job is to do WHATEVER they are told, no questions.

"It quickly reminds me who I am and who these people are. Predators and prey...."

Upon turning eighteen, Nine, is sent to be a personal slave for Kade Sario. Knowing the Sario's reputation she is terrified. She has heard the stories of all the cruelties and injustices she will suffer at her masters hands and that she will be powerless to do anything about it.

"We are told the Sario's are the most brutal, the most unsympathetic, hard to handle family out of them all. If that's true, I might just entertain the idea of suicide if I am chosen to live here."

What she doesn't expect is that underneath the dark, brooding, "fortunate" exterior Kade Sario is actually a genuine man who is torn between what is expected of him by birthright and wanting to do what is right for humanity. What she really doesn't expect is to fall in love with this beautiful, dark, forbidden and complex man.

"I know. I know, for a fact, I'm absolutely, one hundred percent, head over heels in love with Kade Sario, my fortunate. In love. Oh no."

Nine and Kade's relationship was intense. He was so hard to understand at times, he was hot and cold. Just when you think you have him figured out he would do something that would change your opinion. One minute I wanted to slap him the next I wanted to kiss him. I loved watching their relationship transform from master and slave into more than that. I loved seeing Kade struggle with his feelings of lust, jealousy and protectiveness. Justifying his behaviour as nothing more than his fierce protectiveness over his "possessions", he could never love an unfortunate.... Could he?

"She was both beautiful and terrifying, promising him redemption all while forcing him to sin harder than he ever had. Kade had to remember that he was in control. That she was a porn that he needed to checkmate his father. She was a beautiful pawn, one that danced graciously along the board, but a pawn none the less."

Nine had just the right amount attitude, bravery, intelligence and kindness to be a great heroine. She spoke her mind without being annoying and she broke all the rules without being stupid. After all she has endured in her life she was brave, fierce and loyal to Kade.

Told from dual perspectives, the book flowed well and was highly addicting. There was a LOT of steaminess in this book....Kade Sario will have your toes curling long before they actually even have sex!.

I was really impressed with The Unfortunatesand Skyla Madi's writing. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a dystopian type novel with lots of heat. I can't wait for book #2.

oh. My. God! I loved this book! This is not my average read, I didn't even think I was going to like it. I took a chance and boy am I glad I did.

This story was so unique and extremely well written. I felt like I was there; in the story with the characters. It was amazing!

The plot is about this new world of "unfortunates" and "fortunates" or what I call the "have and have nots". The "unfortunates" are basically slaves held in a slave camp until they're 18 yrs old and then given to a "fortunate" as a birthday gift. Sick huh? The "unfortunates" are given numbers rather than names. They're used for many purposes, mostly to work and please their "fortunates" in all forms necessary.

The heroine of the book is Nine. She is intelligent, courageous, strong-willed and incredibly endearing. I loved her. This is what I want my heroine to be. Nine was a fighter and she had her on mind and her own ideas. She knew she was destined for a better life than the one she'd been given. She was inspiring.

Then there's Kade. He was an asshole, but it was mostly an act. I Loved Kade despite his assholery ways. He was "fortunate" of the Sario house and Nine was his 25th birthday present. From minute one he protects her. Not a common thing for a "fortunate" to do. Kade is an Alpha male for sure but not your average one. Kade tries his best to be cold, commanding, distant and fearless but he's human and no matter what his title or status is he has compassion and heart. I loved Kade because he was not the current trendy hero running its course lately. You know; the super mega filthy rich billionaire with a kink fetish who falls in love with the young naïve virginal heroine despite doing all kinds of sexually explicit things to her; you know....that hero. No. Kade was different and a breath of fresh air. He was complex, tortured and conflicted in his own way and I liked that.

I connected with these characters. I cared about them. I gave them a face (Kade: Charlie Hunnam/ Chris Hemsworth NINE: Holland Roden) and I definitely wanted to know more about them. I loved how their story slowly unfolded. The writer did such an AMAZING job keeping me invested in their story.

Oh and this book was also very, very sexy; truly erotic. Now, as I've said in other reviews; I LOVES me some sex in my books. Not just a little here and there but a WHOLE LOT of sex! The dirtier and frequent the better. This book had its share of steam and it was very well placed however the sex didn't totally saturate the book which surprised me even more! The story was THAT good!!! The sex scenes that were there we're very descriptive and erotic as hell! Yes, it took me there!

The secondary characters were pivotal to the story and were not just fluff characters to fill space in the book. I hated Kade's brother Vince though. He sucks!

Over all I 100% loved this book. Skyla Madi has become one of my new favorite authors. She has also encouraged me to explore other genres of books. I really enjoyed reading this story. It actually got me excited about reading again. I only wished the next installment of the book was available. I hate reading a book in a series and the next book is unavailable. Anyway, I really encourage everyone to pick up this gem. you won't be disappointed! Happy reading!

A dystopian novel.....More like a dystopian porn!

I was expecting some adventure or plot even, but the novel was basically all erotica.
It was an okay read.
I didn't get what I wanted, which was an actually shoot and chase dystopian novel with the sexual tension and the awesomeness.
The main character is slightly annoying too. She tries to come off as tough and that is in conflict as how she should been brought up like an Unfortunate...Who cares about survival when you can just go on and get your self in stupid situations????

You know, when you give very short summary to a book you read, this was it, almost 5 pages that include the title page.
The ever inexperienced, slave girl attracts what is supposed to be a dominant, experienced man and they fall into a relationship: check
Prince charming / dominant man: actually a controlling, obsessive, manipulative man who does whatever necessary to catch his prey and trap her: check
I'm so over this trope of virgin and alpha-hole.
The most ludicrous twist:

4 stars!!!

I had this novel for weeks now but I've been avoiding it coz... well, I don't remember the plot, the title ain't that catchy and the cover was...so so...

I got bored and the novels that I've tried reading didn't interest me that much so when I scrolled through the list, I saw this and decided to read it, and I was kind of like 'better get this over with, if it's good, good, if not, drop it.'

I love the story, the characters, the flow, the writing style is good, although I did skip a few parts.

And ended up reading this novel with a smile on ma face! How I would love to see Elizabeth's face if Nine/Ana gets head to head with her... and of course, the most asshole of them all, Vince! I want him to bleed to death!!

Book 2 please!!! If you could release it this month or next month, good..if not... well, that sucks for me.

OK....I thought this was AWESOME! I loved the premise and I totally loved the dynamic between Kade and Nine.

There were so many things that I 'wanted' to happen that I kept reading faster and faster, hoping that I would get to the part and then something new would occur and throw everything into a tail spin. OMG, the ending....when I got to the page that read 'the story continues in book 2 (or whatever it said)', I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Once I started, I didn't put this book down until I finished, it was that great! I simply cannot wait for the second book!!

DNF 60%

I liked this a lot but I just lost interest. I started it, got distracted by life and couldn’t get back into it. I love the premise, characters, and writing.

Some where between 3-4 stars.

SG Ladies, not safe. The H wants to loan her out as a business weapon...I never got far enough to see how that played out. I suspect he doesn’t. But I don’t know. He does fuck an OW after meeting her the first time. There’s a 2 week gap he doesn’t see her and then after he sees her again he’s not with any OW.

10566346_10105253527550494_1149819473_nThere are a few authors out there who could tell me they're writing a new novel about the joys of shit-scrubbing and I'd gear up to read it. Fortunately none of the authors I love tend to write about shit-scrubbing, so that doesn't come up much. Either way, Skyla Madi is one of them. There was a sneak-peak of The Unfortunates at the end of Forever Consumed and I was hooked right away.
When Skyla put out a call for ARCs, it went without saying that we wanted it. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it! Now, sometimes being too exciting about something can be bad. And I'm going to tell you the truth, for about the first 50% of the book, I was afraid that was the case with The Unfortunates. I had faith in Skyla to bring it around, but she sure did make me anxious. Fortunately, my faith was rewarded. I ended up loving it.

Overall Rating: 5 stars- Screw sleep! I’ll let the kids watch TV and eat hot dogs tomorrow.
UnfortunatesKade Sario was supposed to vicious and cruel.

As I said, this was a nail-biter for me. I mean that in more than one way. I had a very hard time connected to Kade in the story. I knew from the description that eventually, Nine was going to love him and I just...... didn't. He was an ass. I don't mean a sort-of-rude, egocentric ass. I mean, a slave-owning, want-to-punch-him-in-his-aristrocratic-face, murder-his-whole-family kind of way.
If you don't get chosen before you turn nineteen, they force you into sexual relations with other Unfortunates. The more Unfortunate offspring, the more slaves the Fortunates will have later on. Once you're pregnancy, the daddy is killed, and once you give birth, you get a bullet to the back of the head.

There's a scene where he threatens to put Nine in a small space and basically terrorize her and it does not sit well with me. I hated it. I get that it's accurate character portrayal, but I hated it. Megan thinks I'm soft, but I do not like my heroes to treat their women badly. You can murder everyone else around you, but you treat your woman like gold. And Kade did not.

I found Nine easy to like. She's a slave, an "unfortunate." I thought I would have trouble with a slave falling in love with a slave-master, but the way the story is told, it is believable. She's raised in a camp devoted to brain-washing her to love her future master. It's the life she's always known was coming. And she's a little bit too mouthy and a little bit too bold, which makes me want to be her friend.
"I want to hold you."
When I relax, he loosens his grip. "Why? I ask. "I thought you don't do sweet?"
"It's not sweet. Don't talk." He yawns into my hair. "Just sleep."

At just past the 50% point of the book, I noted "maybe I hate him a little bit less now." That was really where things started to change. By 60% we learn more of his background. And man, it's messed up. I started feeling these weird bits of sympathy for him. And then things just kept going. He still did some things that I didn't agree with, but I understood his reasoning a bit better.
"Should I let him know yoru slave is defective?"
"My slave is fine. You are defective."

And then, of course, there was the end. Damn Skyla and her cliffhangers! Man was this a good one. I mean, whoa. As of the time I read this, there wasn't even a release date for The Unfortunates yet (it has since been set for 8.5.14) so I was an anxious mess wondering how I would ever make it to book two when book one isn't even really out yet. Having a release date helped a little, but not a lot. I still hope Skyla's furiously penning the next book because I need more. I just do. She dropped a bomb in our laps and then just left us hanging.
"Stop crying because I don't know how to make you better . . . I don't know how to fix this."

When I finished the book, my reaction was mostly, "Wow." I didn't really know what to think yet. It was SO much to take in. Some things I loved, some things I hated. Megan started reading it shortly after I did, and it was one of those books that found us texting each other about the myriad of emotions we were feeling. Megan also had trouble in the beginning (I'm sure she'll tell you about it in her review) and I kept assuring her that Skyla did pull it off. So as of the end of the book, I was thinking maybe I'd give it a 4.5. I mean, I spent so much of the book just hating one of the main characters.
"I'm going to do more than put my mouth on your pussy."

But after marinating on my thoughts for a few days (I like to do that with books that make me think a lot. I need time to process.) I realized that I was still feeling a lot of emotions. I was still (am still!) angry at Kade for some things he did. And was still stunned by the twist. And still thinking about the entire society that Skyla has created for this book. That's when I realized this definitely is a 5 star book. Any book that leaves you pondering the great questions, still feeling strong emotions, still stirring a visceral reaction at the mention of the characters in the books - even if those emotions and reactions aren't all positive - deserves a 5. And truly, when I was reading it, it was a book I couldn't wait to get back to it. I needed to know what happened next. I was completely sucked in.

The Unfortunates won't be available for another week, but I hope when it does become available, you'll give it a go. And then stick with it. It's a rough ride, but the destination really is worth it.
"This society is sick and twisted and I don't want any part of it."

Smut Factor: 4 stars- Smokin’ Hot!
Character likability: 4 stars- I wish we were friends.
Storytelling: 5 stars- I wake up thinking this really happened.
Writing and editing quality: 4 stars- Well done!

Unfortunates #1 and Fortunates #2

I've read so many very good and also very bad reviews about this series and was so intrigued, that I wanted to know what it's about this series, that let people have so many very different emotions and opinions.
I love Skyla Madi's books. She writes really good and exciting stories and I couldn't let it go. This book is a dystopia story, what's not my usual genre, about a world where civilization is back to slavery and ownership.
This world is disturbing and ugly, like the "old" slavery world was.
Warning: This book is a very dark one.
The slaves aka Unfortunates and the owners aka Fortunates live theirs lives like they did over 300 years ago. The Unfortunates are nothing but things that can be easy replaced. Their lives are not important and they have only one purpose, to serve their owners in any way they please. But there is a small part of this ugly society, that hate the way this world operates.
And yes, in this dystopian world a love story is still possible. A forbidden romance between a Fortunate and Unfortunate unfold and....🤭
Sorry, I can't spoil this books more than I already have 😬
Yes, without doubt, I liked this 2 books from the trilogy. I hope I can read the last book soon. I'm dying to know how this crazy story ends. I hope Skyla will put me from my misery and publish the last book this year. I really hope for a HEA 😬

This was one of those books that I couldn't put down. It held my interest, I cared about the characters, and I'm eager to know what happens next!

Nothing got done. Nothing!!! Dang it, Skyla and your brilliant plot-twisting, dark, brooding, hot-melting love story!

Skyla Madi did something I admire: after her Consumed trilogy, we get another story--entirely different from Seth Marc and Olivia. The Unfortunates is not for the faint of heart; I can't lie. It's intense. There's things that will make some uncomfortable (I'm trying not to give away spoilers, sorry!) and tests our ethics boundaries.

The Unfortunates is the story of Nine, an Unfortunate (slave) sold to a family of Fortunates (masters) as a gift for Kaden on his 25th birthday. Once she arrives at the household, strap in, cause it's gonna be one hell of a ride!

I love Nine's spunk and spirit; she asks questions, refusing to take her circumstances at face value. Sometimes she's aware it might cost her the ultimate price, but she remains steady -- then enters Kade...

Holy hell.
Kade is everything an Alpha is: brooding, possessive, and doesn't like others touching his "things", especially his unfortunate, Nine. Kade's brother, Vince, is an A-grade douche, and of course, goes out of his way to mess with Kade's things, especially Nine.

Nine tries her best to survive in her new circumstances, but can't help falling for Kade.

Kade is also bound by circumstance: as a Fortunate, his priorities and belief system is different from Nine. The author does an excellent job with their backstory, especially Kade's. it's just heartbreaking. Like Nine, Kade has done what is necessary to survive in his world.
There are some really intense scenes and the ending, OMG. Don't even get me started!

Again, not trying to give out spoilers, but when the truth is revealed (which I kinda saw coming) Kade's reaction left me wanting to just ugh!

Yeah Nine! kick him, hard!!!!

I loved this book. An original premise, conflict and suspense buildup, dark and steamy lovin' and a hell of a cliffhanger - not bad enough to break my ipad over it, but enough for me to look forward to The Fortunates!
Kudos Skyla Madi!!

I really like Skyla’s Slammed series so I was looking forward to reading this new series- Unfortunates and it really didn’t disappoint, I loved it.
Set in the future and the world is a different place made up of Fortunate who rule and Unfortunates who are slaves for the fortunate. The book begins on Nine’s 18th birthday where it’s the day for her to become a slave to a Fortunate. Nine is brought by Kade’s father for his 25th birthday. Kade decides that he will use Nine to help me gain more power and he sets about trying to teach her how to seduce. Kade plans to keep Nine at arms length but there is something about Nine that has him thinking differently. However in this world Unfortunates and Fortunate love is forbidden however as the pair develop a plan to help gain Kade more power’s feeling are shared and is the plan really worth the risk?

I absolutely loved the plot of the book. I was very quickly hooked into the story as it was a little bit different. The other does a great job of describing this new world and I very quickly picked up the plot. It was very fast paced and lots to drama to keep me hooked. The characters are really great I loved Nine and Kade. Kade could be an asshole at times but then caring and protective of Nine at others. There was also plenty steamy scenes throughout the book. The book is told from both Nine’s and Kade’s POV and I felt that really added to story as I really feel you got to know the characters betters and their thoughts and feelings.

When I started the story I really couldn’t tell which way the story would go. There is a great little twist/ reveal near the end and I can’t wait for book 2 to see where the story goes. It does end on a slight cliff-hanger but I can live with it till book 2 is released.

**I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review

Spoiler Ahead This book was picked for me in a challenge to read and it was pretty good. This was my first time reading this author and not my last. When Nine wakes and it's her 18th birthday it's her day to be chosen to become someone's Unfortunate, to become a slave. Little did Nine know that Kade's Father would choose her for Kade's 25th Birthday and her whole world as she knew it would change. Compassion, hurt, protection, possessiveness and love would come into play and not only turn Nine's world upside down but also her Master Kade's. Kade's plan is to not use Nine for himself but use her a pawn in his own world to get him to the top. Love is forbidden between a fortunate and unfortunate Kade is willing to risk everything to save Nine. This was a good book that I enjoy a lot the sex scenes were hot as hell I really liked both of these character's. This book captured me from beginning to end. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. If you like reading hot master slave books than I recommend that you read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Who needs sleep when you are pulled into a world right from the start and you just can't put the book down. This is one of those stories that will keep you up into the late hours of the night, because you have to keep on reading, you have to know what is going to happen next. Sure I'm going to be a Zombie today, but who cares this book was worth it.

Because this book ticks all of the following:
There is tension, violence and fear and unfairness, but there is also has love, hope, care, kindness and soul.

I loved it! Im immediately starting with the next book.

So why not 5 stars? Well you all know how I hate those cliffhangers. And yes, I knew there would be one before hand, but still I did not see that ending coming.

A good ending!

I really liked reading this Dystopian Romance by Skyla Madi. The Unfortunates grabbed my attention right from the start, with Nine ( the main female character ) getting ready for her Selection, this being where she's forced to become a slave to a Fortunate. This society is set up as having 2 classes - Fortunates and the Unfortunates, who must serve the Fortunates and basically have zero rights.

Even though Nine has been raised as having zero rights, she still manages to have a strong willed, somewhat fierce personality. She becomes the personal slave of Kade Sario, and even though he comes across as mean and uncaring, all is not what it seems. The ending was a little bit of a cliffy, but I enjoyed it - I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book.

Skyla sent me The Unfortunates for an honest review so Skyla here we go hun!

I was so looking forward to this series. Some of the teasers I'd seen really lured me in.

This book is set in a time where people are split into two classes. The Fortunates and The Unfortunates.

The Unfortunates are born to learn how to serve the Fortunates and at 18 they are taken and sold to The Fortunates.
The Fortunates are simply horrendous to the Unfortunates and the Dark and evil things they do leave the Unfortunates scared for their lives. BEWARE there are some very disturbing scenes in this book. They left me feeling sick to my stomach.

Nine is The Unfortunate we focus on in this story. She is sold to The Milano house to Kate (Kaden). He is the 2nd in charge beneath his father.
Kade is powerful and scary but his mother who we find out died when he was young taught him that Unfortunates shouldn't be harmed but helped. Although he struggles with this throughout the story it becomes clear he's a lot like his mum.

Kade and Nine have a turbulent relationship the harrowing journey they take will keep you glued to the book til the very end.
Relations between Fortunates and Unfortunates is forbidden. The will they won't they story line is nail biting!

All in all this book is captivating. Yes it's dark.. Yes it's sinister... Yes it will make you cry (believe me I did several times) but it's worth it for so many reasons.
The ending will leave you speechless, open mouthed and wanting more... I'm crazy out of my mind for the next book!

So Skyla wow wow wow!
Amazing writing, you did it again!
Love your work hun.
A massive 5* wish I could give it a million!

Until today, i thought reading was not having a big affect on me anymore, because I didn't finish the last books i started reading! Until now! I ADORE this book! It showed me again what reading should be like! You should feel connected to a book, obsessed with a book, you shouldn't be able to put it down and I thank you so much Mrs. Madi that you gave me that book hangover again! I truly missed it!!! Can't wait for the Second book!!!!!!! Please hurry!!!

4.5 Stars.

Oh man. So good. I love the world building. So good. I mean, the dystopian world has been done before. Very reminiscent to The Chemical Garden by Lauren DeStefano in a way, but different, and very, very adult. *Grins*

I love the characters and the plot. It's a small cliffy. Doesn't leave you dying, but makes you gasp and want the second book. Like now.

....Oh man. Book hangover. What to read next :(

This was one of those books that started with an awesome premise but fell apart in the execution. Plus not long ago I read Eve Vaughn's take on a dystopian universe Run by Eve Vaughn , and this suffered in the comparison. I would suggest trying that dark fantasy instead.

jesus, this was such a bad book.

there are no words.

it's instalove with an anti-hero.
it's chock-full of clichés.
it's dripping with tropes...

which would normally be a-ok with me when done in an entertaining or original way.

this, is unfortunately something that's been done before and you can find better alternatives.

i'm honestly baffled it has so many 4-5 star ratings.

ah. who cares?
in a week i won't even remember this book. pass.
