Teen Wolf AU The five times Derek called the Sheriff "Dad" on accident and the first time he did it on purpose. Words: 103540 completed Original Post: http://archiveofourown.org:80/works/7...
Most misleading blurb in the history of ever, because this story is not funny or light; it's pervaded by an intense, soft, sad, unspeakable tenderness and it fills you with it, with the sort of raw feeling that slices your heart open and then patches it back up in such a way that when it's done, you feel as if you'd just seen the deepest secrets of the universe. Which you haven't, for the record - I wouldn't want to mislead you myself.
I honest to God took notes while reading this fic, which is unheard of, and now I just can't seem to fit them together in coherent sentences and fluent paragraphs. Because that's what happens when I take notes. Also, me taking notes is what happens when a story is too good to be true. Which doesn't mean it's perfect, because it does have some flaws, but somehow, it's those flaws that make it even more perfect than it would be without them. It has scenes that are pretty much the definition of fanfic cliché, and then there are these moments of such surprising insight and intensity that it makes you wonder. Clichés happen, so beautiful catastrophes must too. This story handles uncomfortable topics in that easy, matter-of-fact way that makes you realise that even though most people don't want to think about them, because they're too intense and multifaceted and morally conflicted, they're common, everyday situations.
You know all those heartbreaking stories of personal growth and family love that pop up once in a while in the M/M romance genre and make all the reviewers fall all over themselves crying and tearing their hair out in clumps? (You do know what I'm talking about.) Well, those feel fake to me now. They feel flimsy and kind of stupid and a little bit cute.
RemainNameless (who, btw, is now officially one of the best sterek writers out there in my book) takes the TW cast and sticks to what the producers and actors gave us, but she somehow builds real people out of that. She builds flaws and dreams and fears and quirks, she takes kindness and pettiness and love and hatred and strength and weakness and distributes them equally in characters that are as far from cardboard cutouts as they can possibly get.
So take a chance - don't try to find out anything more about the story, click the link and just enjoy having your heart carved out with a virtual butter knife, because it's gorgeous.
I picked this one because the previous fics I've read by this author were more on the sexy side. This wasn't that, at all. And contrary to the kind of cutesy, funny blurb, this was NOT a cutesy funny story. This story was sad and angsty and deep. It was REALLY good, just not what I expected.
I know this author is quite young (18-19, I think), but there were several rather glaring errors in this fic that I feel need to be pointed out.
-One, I don't think you can get hired on as a deputy and go right to work, no training. -Two, A car hits Derek's Camaro, and it ends up flipping, but a few days(three at most) later, Derek is driving it, no mention of damage or getting it repaired, which there was no time to do, because Derek was in a healing sleep for those days. -Three, when a person has no brain activity, that's it, they don't wake up a day later, perfectly fine. -Four, at one point, Derek mentions leaving his phone at home, a few minutes later, he has his phone and is calling 911, but he never went to pick it up.
Other than those glaring errors, I really enjoyed this fic. Derek is very damaged from his encounter with Kate, and I thought it was all beautifully done. This was the first fic I think I've read that was entirely from Derek's POV, and I really missed Stiles.
It's a well written LONG fic but heavy going in places, it could have done with shaking off some of the angst. Also I think this is definitely one geared more for series-fans as characters appear with no introduction and there's quite a lot of past event referred too that don't get explained (Jackson is mentioned as being killed horribly then a few pages later he turns up and no one is surprised). I found myself skim reading at times.
The blurb gives the wrong impression, this is not a light humourous fic, there's a few adventures and a lot of pining. The Sheriff seems confused over who his son is (Derek/Stiles) at times and while I liked how he was with Derek I wasn't always convinced by him putting him before Stiles.
There's a lot of solitary masturbation, not a lot of shared activity ;) But there is some cute snuggling.
Could have done without the Sarah plot - didn't like the way she seemed forgotten for a long stretch of the story then returns to be dismissed over a phone call. Harsh that.
It had great potential but I wouldn't want to re-read, too heavy and too much unexplained considering I've never seen the series.
1.5 (May even downgrade to 1 - but I am feeling generous right now) stars
Whew, that was BAD. It encapsulated everything that I originally refused to read fan fiction for. If I hadn't been familiar with this author I would have assumed an imaginative, possibility over dramatic high schooler had written this, so I am just going to guess maybe this was one of Remainsnameless's first works, and luckily their writing has evolved since this one.
Poorly written, poorly plotted, over sensational, editor needed, the only recognizable aspects that the characters have to their Teen Wolf inspirations is their names.
Issues:
Derek is bat shit crazy in this, pathetically so. I don't mind me some emotionally wounded Derek every now and again, but this was just sad. And annoying. And whiny.
For about 85% of the story I was not sure if I had inadvertently grabbed a "Sherek". It seemed Derek and the Sheriff spent more time emotionally attached than Derek and Stiles.
This one was just bizarre, but a plot twist, so
It keeps going and going and going. First they fight Deucalion, then Danny is a monster - but they are cool with that, then an, again bizarre, insert with witches, then hunters, then the Winter Formal, then Sheriff gets hurt. It was like every plot bunny the author had was stuffed into this with a ribbon on top.
Derek is in therapy for Kate issues. I hate when therapy is brought into a book for the bad boy character. And in this it is spectacularly bad. Though ironically enough, every other chapter when they sat there to talk about feelings, I had to laugh? Cringe? When the therapist who was trying to help Derek deal with what Kate did to him and sort out everything in a very adult manner, then encourages him to pursue his feelings for an underage Stiles.
I could keep going, but basically this is like a soap opera cluster fuck written with the immaturity and skill level of a post pubescent teen. Derek suffers some serious arrested development and Stiles reads so feminine.
RemainsNameless is a very hit an miss author for me, I have five starred one of their works, handed out 3.5 stars to two of their works and really should have DNF'd this one. One thing that has been consistent with this author though is that the stories always begin strong, some even stay strong most of the way through and then they just fall apart. Basically the author is a "terrible ender", starting off so well every time only to get lost along the way and blow the ending - even the one I five starred got very dramatic and wobbly at the ending. This one though was just such a disaster, think I might be off this author for now.
Do you know the kind of fics that hurt you, but it hurts so good?
This is a Teen Wolf, Stiles and Derek fanfic and its amazing.. It really is.
It’s weird though, because even though it feels somewhat AU, it still feels so canon! It legit feels like all of this could happen, word for word in 3B, and I wouldn’t even be surprised. This author knows how to write these characters, for reals! Like, wow.
This is a long fic, and although there are supernatural creatures, its basically 100.000 words of Derek being the self-sacrificing, ‘you’re too good for me’, idiot that he is. And that’s why this hurts.. It’s the kind of fic where you, from the first word, have a giant ball of angst in your stomach. But it’s also the kind of fic that makes you laugh out loud, because Stiles is written perfectly, and Stiles makes people laugh.
“This is not what Derek signed up for. Not even close. “I’m not staying for this. I have important things to do, Stiles.” “What, like waxing your chest? “”
This is the kind of fic that makes you want to quote it again and again, because there are so many amazing ones. Funny, sweet, beautiful and heart-breaking.
“He grins, and Derek returns it because he’s weak and an idiot for Stiles, and his forgiveness feels like a wave of relief. Heady. And he’s stupidly beautiful, and Derek wants to just touch his cheek, but he stays in the chair. Holds onto the arms for strength.”
I feel like I could go on forever about this fic, but all I need to say is that it’s amazing, and it’s about Stiles and Derek and you should read it… You really should.
There were a few things, that took you out of the story for a few mins, before you just have to decide to roll with the punches, and go on. Like Derek becoming a deputy. Unless there is some type of national emergency, I don't think you can just get deputized and go to work, without having training. There were other things too, but the deputy thing was the big one for me. So, I just decided to roll with it, and I'm glad I did. Because this was a very enjoyable fic.
I did wish for a little more sexy times...ya know with 2 participants...but the solo acts were pretty hot.4
Derek is his own worst critic, which makes for a lot of personal angst for him. It got a little tiring, but it was still very sweet.
I think I loved almost everything RemainNameless wrote but this one was not for me. I do not condone cheating especially with stupid reasons. I don't think Derek would be that dumb and I don't think it's healthy to suggest that thing. Also, I'm not expert in therapy but it's really fucked up to suggest that to someone. No. Plus, it was like Stiles was fine with it. He did say he was hurt but whatever.
A solid 4 star for me. The blurb, to me at least, indicates a humorous story with a happy ending. NOT. I loved that it was written from Derek's POV and Stiles was who he had to figure out. Different in a good way. Not being a watcher of the TV series, I don't know how canonical it is, but Deaton appeared strongly in it. It also seemed to cover how Scott finally became part of Derek's pack. Stiles was very well written, except at the end when he went off on magic.....without thinking. Sherif Stalinski was the anomaly here. He seems to immediately take Derek under his wing and calls him son and practically invites him to have a relationship with his son. He actively wants their relationship to work and in order to do that, Derek needs to work out his issues with Kate and losing his family so he forces Derek into therapy. So many promising situations that were thwarted with paranormal activity. So many times I thought, ok now they can be a couple. Wait till the end folks. Also, there is masturbation individually but no consummation of Sterek. I still enjoyed it. Fairly long story.
I love sterek and RemainNameless is one of my favourite sterek writers, but I was disappointed with this one. I skipped through the last part, and after reading it, I just felt depressed.
3.5 stars Dayum this was a lonnnnnnng angsty read. But not the painful kinda angsty, the soft and slow kinda angsty. Derek had all the man-pain but Stiles was so understanding and the Sheriff was so wonderful that it all just worked. He really delved into why he felt the way he did (in his own head at least, and then with a therapist) so it wasn't just needless whiney angst like Derek can sometimes do. Lovely, and a nice innocent ending that had me grinning like a loon.
Update: 2019 Ever go back and look at a review and think wtf am I talking about? Yep that be me....
I have been trying to read this all day... I could definitely knock this out in one day if I wanted to but its been dragging for me.
I accidentally skipped ahead, not real far but closer to the middle and thought ok I'm going to give this a try. Where I 'started'? Stiles was sleeping (resting) with Derek at night. Derek also started seeing a... Sarah? I got the impression that he's 'trying' on a relationship so he can be better for Stiles. But from the beginning I'm still at Stiles being sixteen. I'm not sure how old Derek is in this one cus I haven't had any mention as of yet. Seventeen close to eighteen I'm ok with. Sixteen is yeah just kind of creepy depending on the age difference. So that is completely holding me back to reaching my goal of my 'real' beginning.
In the end.. during writing this.. I basically skipped a WHOLE lot and got the gist of it by reading part of chapter 5 and most of 6.
This dragged way too much in the middle and RemainNameless does not know that the appropriate preposition to precede accident is by, but I still love her/his fics. The ending redeemed this story and took it back up to 4 stars. I appreciate what s/he was trying to do with making Derek so overly concerned with Stiles' age and also his desire to practice relationships before doing a relationship with Stiles.
The only thing that dragged the rating down was the way Stiles and Derek's relationship was handled. It was only in this story that I found it offensive and maddening to see Derek almost cheating. The whole affair... or better said liaison, with Sarah made no sense and was pointless. A fact that was proven later on in the story when Derek dumped her. I was disappointed by the anti-climatic reveal that Derek was in love with Stiles. I was puzzled and enraged to see him wax poetry to everything related to Stiles but still sell himself short and then deliberately go out to meet someone else. And Stiles just accepting everything was... beyond me. I was disenchanted with the way Stiles was made Derek's anchor. I was left with a sour taste in my mouth and the impression they were forced into this, when each loved the other one. I was equally disillusioned with the much awaited mutual confession where both men focused more on their own flaws rather than hope and trust that things might work out. If all relationships start with this much pessimism, most would fall apart at the slightest tension.
The action scenes were well put together. That first one with Derek almost dying and Stiles magically bringing him back was really good. Then the author completely forgot Stiles had any magic inclinations and pushed him into the damsel in distress role, kept away from most conflicts the pack engaged (dealing with Danny, the fresh incubus, meeting the witches that pretended to want Lydia but actually wanted Stiles). And let's not forget about Derek kissing his true love before the hour was up as part of the witches' curse but not saying anything to Stiles. Then the author randomly gave the sheriff a heart attack (that one came out of left field) and lo and behold, Stiles is practicing magic again. I didn't understand if the Sheriff woke up on his own or because of Stiles' incantation. There is another detailed action scene where Derek valiantly jumps inside Stiles' magic to stop him from completing the spell.
Then everything is nicely wrapped up with some lengthy kissing, a behind closed doors jerk off and... Derek giving Stiles a key? Yeah, I was not satisfied with the evolution in this story. Pretty distinct from the image I have of Stiles and Derek so that not even the action scenes could increase the rating.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The blurb kinda makes you think this will be a tale of sweetness and light.
It's not.
And quite frankly, you should know it's not because it's about DEREK HALE and when has anything in Derek's life ever been about sweetness and light? Derek Hale and Dean Winchester are sitting together somewhere, sharing a beer and commiserating over the fact that neither of them ever get to have any of the nice things and if, by chance, they do get a nice thing...it's taken away or (in Derek's case) turned into a serial killing, psychotic, child murdering bad thing *cough Kate* *cough Jennifer* #Butthat'snotmybusiness
This book is angsty and sad in places but a really good read, especially if you like your fic Derek centric. I loved the dynamic between Stiles and Derek and I loved the journey Derek goes on in and how he comes to realize that being Derek Hale doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to have nice things.
I tried to read this book but I'm lost. There are so many references to people and places that seem to come from left field. And lots of references to major incidents that have already occurred and have an impact on this story but they are not explained.
I read the author's "No Homo" about the same 2 main MC's (Hale and Stiles) and had no such problems. I think with this one, you either have to have read other books from the author (maybe by the date they were written?) or you have to be familiar with the TV Show. Either way, it's too much work for me right now to try to figure it out. I'll file this on my to-be-read later shelf and hope this author keeps up with the writing.
This is one of the most IN CHARACTER fics ever in the Sterek fandom, really, to those out there who love stuff like 'Kingdom of Three' and 'DILF' those were more like novels with Stiles&Derek than proper Sterek fanfiction.
I really, really loved this fic, I ended up reading the last chapter from my cellphone at 3 am. At the moment, it was a really in character and canon fic (at the time).
So in love with this story. I love Derek and John's relationship. I did not like Derek dating other people but I do see the wisdom in it. Very thought out story with plenty of feels.
Oct 26, 2017 I just love stories where the sheriff and Derek have a relationship. I love when they gang up on Stiles together. The angst and the pining of Stiles and Derek makes it even better. Still after a few years love this one.
