For some girls, New York could be a vision of glamour. But, lovely, young Norma Milnor soon discovered the naked evil behind the city's dazzling mask. The old Bacon mansion in Greenwich Village, with its long history of violence, had become a rooming house by the time Norma moved in. Her new neighbors--artists, writers, even far-out hippies--all seemed fascinating and friendly. Too late Norma learned she was trapped in a viper's nest of mystery and murder, where no one could be trusted--and even love could be a deadly snare...
There was a review for this book that I happened across. It said something along the lines of 'If you like Scooby-Doo, you will like this. This is like Scooby-Doo for adults!". That review is amazingly accurate. Some of the dialogue and happenings in the book give off kind of a Neil Simon's 'The odd couple' vibe, anyway at least that's what I was picking up from it I don't mean that in any negative manner. The book is from 1968 and the writing reflects the time. There were some interesting word choices but I enjoyed reading this thoroughly.
Poor Norma Milnor (BTW, what a name!) She's dumped by her fiance when he invites her to a hotel for dinner. Guess who else comes--his new wife! Norma rushes off in tears to be rescued by an old friend. She finds a new place to live, trouble is, murder follows her.
Not a bad mystery, but dated in tone. Norma is sweet and hardly a total pushover, but she sure doesn't strike me as a modern woman.
