Always Her Cowboy by Karen Rose Smith is a 2013 publication.

This is the fourth installment in the ‘Search for Love’ series.

I love a good western style contemporary romance, especially those that blend strong family ties in with the romantic elements to create an emotional story with depth and feeling.

This story, centers around Lucy McIntyre, who was adopted at birth, and is very close with her family, but has recently discovered she may have a biological sister. She’s very interested in finding her sister, but she also has her hands full on the ranch where her brother is going through a rough patch and she is trying to cover for him. To that end, she has hired Zack to help out at ‘The Rising Star’.

Almost immediately the connection between them is palpable, but Zack makes it quite clear he has no intention of sticking around. He’s a loner, a traveler, a drifter, and he likes it that way, thank you very much, but the more time he spends around Lucy, the harder it becomes to resist the attraction between them. Wanting to give into the passion and desire they both feel, wanting to live in the moment, but knowing Lucy deserves more, Zack has a lot of soul searching to do.

Can love heal Zack’s broken heart and help him find peace again?

This story is sweet, a little saucy and sexy, and emotional on several fronts. The topics range from dealing with the death of loved ones, problem drinking, infertility, and family connections.

That is a lot of ground to cover, but the author brought all the elements together nicely to give this couple the happily ever after they both deserved.

I did worry about Zack a lot, as his pain is quite obvious, but his stubbornness was almost his undoing. Lucy, put up with him for a time, but I was afraid she was about to throw in the towel. Whew, he was one tough nut to crack! But, I ended up really liking him and think he is perfect for Lucy. The family issues were also compelling and thought provoking, adding a lot of depth to the story.

Overall, this is an enjoyable and touching story.

I really enjoyed reading the Always her Comboy ebook. It's something each character had a past in which they affected them in the different way. One wanted to forget his past as internal medicine and death of his wife and his unborn child and another had a secret pertaining her not being able to children. Will they accept each past and condition. It was a very thought of romance story of two come together at the Rising Star Ranch. I would recommend this book to anyone who interested in reading this book

Always Her Cowboy by Karen Rose Smith

This is the book I chose to read for WorldLitCafe this month and, honestly, I’m rather disappointed that it’s the one I chose. I do not like to give bad reviews, but I just did not like this book. I am not a romance reader, although I used to be, but I thought I would give this one a try because it had horses on the cover, and I love them! Bad choice on my part.

Lucy McIntyre is the adopted daughter of a ranch-living family. She loves horses and her family, but has been hurt in the past because of her inability to have children. Zackary Burke is a drifter, roaming from ranch to ranch looking for work and running from the loss of his wife and child. Will love find these two damaged people?

As I mentioned above, I am not a romance reader. I read many while I was in high school, but soon discovered that if you had read one, you had read most of them. I wanted to read this one, because I thought horse would play a more integral part in the plot. There aren’t many fiction books involving horses for adults. However, I was sorely disappointed, both with the involvement of horses and the plot. There just did not seem to be much of one.

The sexual tension between Zack and Lucy is very apparent, but I spent most of the book wishing they would just have sex already. When they finally did, I was disappointed with the cliches involved in the sex scene. The dialogue between the two seemed stilted and forced, and the emotions of the characters just didn’t seem real. Not only did I wish they would just have sex already, I was waiting for something to happen already! The lack of a coherent plot and unbelievability of the scenarios led me to give this book two starts out of five.

I had a slow start with this book. It took a while for me to get into it. While the story was well written I just felt that the plot was a little lacking. First off I wasn't too happy with Lucy. She claimed to be old fashioned and wanted to wait till she was in a committed relationship before she had sex. She then goes and throws that away and sleeps with Zack even after he has told her a bunch of times that he is not staying past Christmas. Where was her integrity? I wish that she would have held out a little longer. Sex won't make a guy stay. Then there is Zack. He is keeping a secret that he is a doctor. Why? What is the point? No one at the ranch will be mad if they found out. They are not going to fire you. I was unhappy with were the story had went. Like I said the author writes very well, I just wasn't crazy about this book. I have read others by her that I liked very much. Now I am not going to say that there was nothing I liked about this one. There was. I liked the family unity in it. The McIntyre's are a family that stands by one another no matter what. Even when you do something stupid like Lucy's brother Marty did. He drank himself into a stupor and almost burned the house down. They still stood by him and ensured that he got the help that he needed.

Overall Thoughts:

I don't see myself reading this one again. Would I recommend this book? Probably. Everyone's opinion is different. While I couldn't get past my feelings on the plot I am sure someone else may enjoy this story.

Always Her Cowboy by Karen Rose Smith
(Search For Love series Book 4)

A sweetly sexy contemporary ranch romance with an old-fashioned flavor but a modern twist. Secondary characters from books 1, 2, and 3 aid in Lucy's search for her sister.

"Smith does not shy away from tackling the most challenging of emotional situations, which presents her tales an opportunity for poignancy and healing that has become her trademark." Cynthia Penn, reviewer

"For heartwarming, romantic tales of love about realistic people in true to life situations, you can always count on Karen Rose Smith." Jane Bowers, Reviewer Romance Reviews Today

Once a doctor, Zack goes on the road with his Harley to leave the past behind and find a future. He lost his wife and unborn son. He couldn't save Kay and the powerlessness was as difficult to deal with as his grief. Growing up on a ranch that his parents later lost, Zack heads for a life that once brought him peace. After selling his practice in LA, he finds temporary jobs on western ranches until the work is finished. Then he moves on. Until he arrives at the Rising Star.

Lucy McIntyre's father interviewed Zack over the phone. But he trusted Lucy's instincts and gave her the job of checking the man's references as well as doing a face to face interview. Adopted, always grateful for the family who accepted her no matter what, Lucy never expects the sizzling magnetic pull to Zackary Burke. Almost immediately she realizes he's a complicated man. But she has her own secrets. Because of a riding accident when she was seventeen, she can't have children. And in the middle of Zack's interview she receives an unusual call from the family lawyer. When she drives to his office in Long Brush, she finds a photo of two baby girls. The lawyer believes she has a twin. Lucy is as loyal to her family as they are to her. She doesn't want to hurt them or make them think they haven't given her enough...that they aren't enough. Should she find this sister who might be a twin?

Complicating life on the Rising Star, Lucy's brother Marty is drinking too much after a break-up with his girlfriend and Lucy is covering for him. She hopes that soon time will heal his pain. Zack tries to convince her her brother needs help, but Lucy is hoping the situation will resolve itself on its own. She knows Zack is a loner and a drifter and doesn't intend to stay. But they are still drawn together, can't deny their sizzling attraction, and find they can listen to each other with some perspective, even though they don't always agree.

The McIntyre family accepts Zack into their fold. At first his heart is hard against emotions he doesn't want to feel. Lucy McIntyre needed a temporary hand at the Rising Star Ranch to replace her brother temporarily while he worked out some problems. Her father raised cattle but his main focus was Quarter Horses, and that was Lucy’s love as well.

When Zachery Burke road in on his Harley inquiring about the job Lucy was very surprised; he looked like a cowboy except for his helmet and motorcycle. She was not thrilled with him but he had already spoken to her father and it seemed like he already had the job wrapped up. The only problem for the both of them was that the Ranch didn’t have a bunkhouse so he would have to live in their house and take meals with the family. Zack was especially not happy, he wanted to be alone and away from people. He decided to take the job and try it out for awhile and if it didn’t work out, he would leave.

You really have to read the story if you want to know more beyond this point; I don’t want to give anything away. It is a very heartwarming story and I really enjoyed reading it!
