Wenn Nikolaus Harnoncourt seine Sammlung von Aufsätzen, Vorträgen und Vorlesungen Musik als Klangrede nennt, bekennt er sich damit zur Wiedergewinnung beredten Musizierens, für das er selbst mit seinem Ensemble Concentus musicus seit 1953 wegbereitend gewirkt hat. Harnoncourt geht mit dem gegenwärtigen Musikleben streng ins Gericht: Es erscheint ihm als ein aufwendiges Ornament, um über die kulturelle Leere des Lebens hinwegzutäuschen. Dem stellt er die Rückbesinnung auf ein verstehendes Hören entgegen, mit dem Interpreten und Hörer gemeinsam versuchen, sich die vielen Sprachen und Stile der Musik vergangener Jahrhunderte wieder zugänglich zu machen. Doch er verordnet nicht etwa den nostalgischen Rückblick auf originales Barockspiel mit historischen Instrumenten: Hier ist Harnoncourt oft missverstanden worden. Vielmehr setzt er sich mit der Alten Musik, ihrer Spielweise und ihren Instrumenten auseinander, um Impulse für die heutige Musikpraxis zu gewinnen.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt erläutert in diesem Buch die Grundprinzipien seiner musikalischen Praxis, die ihn in der gesamten Musikwelt berühmt gemacht haben. Dabei geht es ihm nicht um die museale Interpretation Alter Musik, sondern um eine moderne Interpretation der Meisterwerke der Vergangenheit, deren Impulse unsere Hörgewohnheiten auf neue Fundamente stellen.

A thoughtful and serious man, whose humor comes through in rehearsals sometimes (see Youtube) and in his bulging eyes (see the Neujahrskonzert 2003). Despite the title, Harnoncourt covers slightly more than Baroque music, e.g., Mozart. He probably does the best Schubert 4th (Tragic) I've heard, although I haven't heard every recording ever made.

A book of collected speeches and lectures by Harnoncourt. He speaks about how music is understood today, how music where understood during Baroque times and the differences and contrasts between the two. He speaks about why he thinks we should change our approach to early music, in order to better understand and appreciate it and its purpose, among other subjects. Being based on vast amounts of experience and research, it has, at least for me, some mindblowing passages. On the downside, that the book contains such a vast variety of subjects makes it fragmented in its layout.

These are the ideas that revolutionized how music from Bach and before is performed today. Also Harnoncourt's recordings, as cellist and as conductor, are genius at work.
