It's the summer of 1936, two long years since Fiona Mitchell buried her husband. Forced to deal with the harsh realities of the Great Depression, the lovely, young widow has put the tragedy behind her by pouring herself into the upkeep of her Virginia farm. Alone, she struggles round the clock to scratch out a living and keep the farm afloat.
Finding love is the furthest thing from her mind and the last thing she’s expecting from Robert Clancy, the hobo who has shown up at her door. All she sees in him is a man who is down on his luck, just another drifter fresh from the breadlines. When she agrees to give him a place to stay in exchange for fixing her fence, she can’t foresee how much the charismatic drifter will come to mean to her. Nor is she aware of the deep-rooted desires that he will stir up. For his part, Robert can’t admit that the white-hot heat that exists between them might be something more than passion.
As these accidental lovers plunge ahead, they begin to wonder if they are victims of love-at-first-sight or simply caught up in a snare of uncontrollable desire. But if it is love, will they be willing to pay the price it demands? In the end, was it fate that brought Robert to Fiona’s doorstep, or was it just bad luck
For the first time in a long while, I have read a historical romance again and I really liked it. This novel is set in 1936 and we get to know the love story of Fiona and Robert. Fiona, a 25 year old widow, who struggles to make ends meet on her farm in Virginia, employs occasionally the services from different drifters, who are passing her property on their travel. This is how she and Robert meet. In exchange for a bed and some warm meals, he agrees to stay for a while and help her. Robert, a 28 year old script play writer, is on his way to California, where he wants to stay with his sister and her family. The attraction between those two characters is instant. Robert is not disinclined to a fling but hesitates to take full advantage of the situation at first, and Fiona is overwhelmed from the emotions a male person can arouse in her... Having been married for six years, the performance of marital duties have always been something along the lines of "Close your eyes and think of England" for her. This changes when Robert steps into her life. She becomes an eager pupil of a highly skilled teacher in no time... Being an erotic novel, you can make an educated guess, if the steamy scenes are happening behind closed doors or if the reader can "witness" all the nitty-gritty in full detail... So what are the obstacles here, the twists and turns? Will Robert stay with Fiona, can Fiona leave her home and farm? The ending is definitely Hollywood material...
