Bilal was born in Belgrade, then the capital of Yugoslavia, to a Czech mother, Ana, who came to Belgrade as child from Karlovy Vary, and a Bosnian Muslim father, Muhamed Hamo Bilal who had been Josip Broz Tito's tailor. When he was five years old, his father managed to take a trip and stay in Paris as a political émigré. Enki and the rest of the family followed him, four years later.
Enki Bilal has no sense of belonging to any ethnic group and religion, nor is he obsessed with soil and roots. He said in one interview: "I also feel Bosnian by my father's origin, a Serb by my place of birth and a Croat by my relationship with a certain friends, not to mention my other Czech half, who I am inherited from mother".
At age 14, he met René Goscinny and with his encouragement applied his talent to comics. He produced work for Goscinny's Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote in the 1970s, publishing his first story, Le Bol Maudit, in 1972.
In 1975, Bilal began working with script writer Pierre Christin on a series of dark and surreal tales, resulting in the body of work titled Légendes d'Aujourd'hui.
He is best known for the Nikopol trilogy (La Foire aux immortels, La Femme piège and Froid Équateur), which took more than a decade to complete. Bilal wrote the script and did the artwork. The final chapter, Froid Équateur, was chosen book of the year by the magazine Lire and is acknowledged by the inventor of chess boxing as the inspiration for the sport.
Quatre? (2007), the last book in the Hatzfeld tetralogy, deals with the breakup of Yugoslavia from a future viewpoint. The first installment came in 1998 in the shape of Le Sommeil du Monstre opening with the main character, Nike, remembering the war in a series of traumatic flashbacks.
In 2012, Bilal was featured in a solo exhibition at The Louvre. The exhibition, titled "The Ghosts of the Louvre", ran from 20 December 2012 to 18 March 2013. The exhibition was organized by Fabrice Douar, and featured a series of paintings of "Ghosts", done atop photographs that Bilal took of the Louvre's collection.

This is an amazing book, and I've waited 21 years to finally read it to the end.
I first came across the Danish edition of volume one in 1998, and I still keep that though my Danish is not as good as I want it to be so I only understood part of the story. And I only managed to get the first three parts.
Then, in 2002 the first volume was released in English. The joy! I bought it at once. And then the disappointment since the subsequent volumes were never translated. But I still got the first part of the story.
Skip a few more years, and into 2007, all four volumes were collected into a Norwegian edition. Finally a chance to read the whole story, but sadly my Norwegian isn't as good as I thought it to be. But at least I got parts of the story.
And now it's near the end of 2019 and finally there's an English collected volume of all stories. In an amazing hardcover edition (though I must confess I liked the original Danish cover better). It cost a fortune, it really did, but I had to have this. So now I have 4 editions of the first book, 3 editions of the 2nd and 3rd, and 2 editions of the 4th. But it was worth it. The story as well as the drawing is magnificent.
But the world has changed. Or my perception of the story has changed.
Back in the 90's my impression of the story was with the Balkan wars in fresh mind from the news, and the book was a sad recollection of that time. And since I didn't have all volumes then, I missed out on some of the last more sci-fi'ish parts and mainly got the dark and glooomy historical bit.
Now in 2019, with all that has been happening recently the Balkan war story elements feels a bit pushed to the back by the chilly likeness of the Obscurantis Order to today's Islamic State, IS, and the current state of the world, in politics, and in environment. In my opinion this does not take from or spoil the story but remakes it into another story, but still just as great.
Oh, and did I say it's a fantastic book. Just as great as Bilal's other masterpieces, Exterminator 17 (the original edition, not the remake), Ship of Stone, The Hunting Party, and Gudarnas marknad (Gods in chaos)

A hypnotic, semi-impressionistic depiction of a cyberpunk future. The plot is convoluted but never obtuse, and it's shot through with a sense of absurd humour. The finale has the ring of deus ex machina about it, but I'm minded to forgive as it also contains Bilal's more explicit commentary on the nature of art, his reflections on his Serbian background and what looks like an endorsement of humanist progressive values in the face of religions and nationalisms that seek to divide the world. Probably the best thing he has done.

مجهود رائع من المحروسة بكل معنى الكلمة وإخراج فاخر وترجمة فوق الممتازة! لا أصدق أنه أصبح لدينا في المكتبة العربية مجلدات بهذا الشكل الفاخر!

رواية عجيبة جدا جدا.. أخدت وقت عشان أقدر أتواصل معاها معالجة مركبة ومعقدة بصراحة بزيادة لكارثة الانسانية في حرب البلقان
في اطار خيال علمي- فانتازي الموضوع حقيقي مربك في أحيانا كتيرة علي مستوي القصة والسرد الرسوم والكادرات هي أكتر حاجة مميزة في الرواية
يمكن بسبب التركيب الشديد المربك للرمزية الحرب وكل الانتهاكات اللي حصلت فيها من كوارث انسانية وتناولها هنا من خلال التلات الشخصيات

suuuper fucking confusing. Even though after reading the glossary and re-skimming the book I think I understand the plot, the characters weren’t super fleshed out and I don’t feel any particular type of way about any of them. Also a few of the characters are drawn to look very similar which did NOT help me with understanding the plot. It was interesting to read this at the same time as Sirens of Titan though, they deal with a lot of the same themes (though I much preferred Sirens).

Капець, який нудотний сюжет. Тобто так, це гарний художник, крута мальовка, особливий стиль, але сюжет такий, шо просто мозок відмовляється це сприймати.

I really liked Bilal’s art on this book but I had a harder time getting into the story. It’s a weird sci-fi cyberpunk story set a decade or so in the future. It shifted POV between the three main characters and their copies so often that I was often disoriented in the rather complex story. Disorientation is one of the themes of the story so maybe that’s how I was supposed to feel but I wasn’t used to it. In the end it all came together and made sense so hang in there if you too lose your bearings.

The artwork is nothing short of stellar, but the story was too difficult for me to follow completely on the first pass.
I suspect, though, that all the pieces will fall into place when I reread it later.

A obra tem o mérito de abordar um monte de assuntos (causas das guerras, visões sobre o que é arte, amor, entre outros) com uma visão muito particular, afinal, estamos aqui trabalhando com um futuro hipotético onde um conflito do mundo real acaba descarrilhando uma cadeia de acontecimentos que não existem no nosso universo, o problema é que o autor teima em não ir a fundo em nenhuma dessas questões, tudo é muito vago, são cenas e mais cenas (belos quadros por sinal) que não vão a lugar algum, chegando a no final, ter uma serie de recordatorios apresentando o futuro dos personagens.
Esse fato muito me entristece, pois, ao menos no primeiro álbum aqui presente as coisas parecem encaminhar para algo gigante, e acaba que nada é tão grande assim (a não ser os quadros, enormes e belíssimos), se não bastasse essa historia descarrilhada ainda há dois problemas, seus personagens (completamente insossos, chegando ao ponto de em determinados momentos ser muito mais interessante os diálogos de dois brinquedos que aparecem em alguns momentos) e a edição (o que parece é que a Nemo possa ter pego a tradução de uma edição de Portugal sem fazer as devidas adaptações da língua, sem contar que uma obra como esta merecia um prefacial ou posfácio apresentando algumas das situações mencionadas ou referenciadas na historia).
Esse fato muito me entristece, pois, ao menos no primeiro álbum aqui presente as coisas parecem encaminhar para algo gigante, e acaba que nada é tão grande assim (a não ser os quadros, enormes e belíssimos), se não bastasse essa historia descarrilhada ainda há dois problemas, seus personagens (completamente insossos, chegando ao ponto de em determinados momentos ser muito mais interessante os diálogos de dois brinquedos que aparecem em alguns momentos) e a edição (o que parece é que a Nemo possa ter pego a tradução de uma edição de Portugal sem fazer as devidas adaptações da língua, sem contar que uma obra como esta merecia um prefacial ou posfácio apresentando algumas das situações mencionadas ou referenciadas na historia).

Wydanie polskie.
Tetralogię Potwora przeczytałem jakieś 10 lat temu, kiedy dopiero zaczynałem moją przygodę z komiksem dla dorosłych i muszę przyznać, że fajnie było do niej wrócić po latach, będąc bardziej w wieku bohaterów i prawie w latach czasu akcji.
Mam lekki problem z modelami Bilala, mam wrażenie, że główne bohaterki różnią się czasem jedynie fryzurami i to nieznacznie, z mężczyznami ten problem nie jest aż tak rażący, chociaż dwóch głównych bohaterów spokojnie mogłoby być braćmi (którymi w pewnym sensie są). Trochę to wybijało z lektury, ale nie jakoś wielce.
Z pierwszego czytania zapamiętałem koncepcję Evil Artu i sztuki brutalnej, drugie spotkanie zostawiło na mnie mniejsze wrażenie, choć koncepcja wszechwładnego potwora 10 lat galopującego kapitalizmu później nie wydaje się jakaś bardzo wydumana.
Chętnie sięgnę po inne rzeczy Bilala, chociaż Nikopola chyba zostawię w sferze wspomnień, bo jeśli dobrze pamiętam z tych dwóch serii (jedynych pozycji autora, z którymi się zapoznałem) "Potwór" podobał mi się bardziej.
A samo wydanie zbiorcze bardzo zgrabne i cieszę się, że odświeżyłem sobie tę opowieść właśnie w takiej formie.

I've been a fan of Enki Bilal's work since the glory days of Heavy Metal magazine in the 1980's, and I'm thrilled to see his best work being released in high quality, oversized hardcover volumes.
I had never previously encountered the stories in Monster, which represent a connected sequence of his more recent work. And I'm really glad I did encounter this volume, since it's an amazing tale of art, war, friendship, and the insanity of organized religion. Bilal draws on his Bosnian and Slovak heritage to tell a heart-breaking tale born of the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990's, and humanity's inability to derive any wisdom from the lessons of that (and every other) war.
Bilal's highly original graphic style is fully on display, and moreover it's clear that he is only getting better with age. This one is a keeper!

A lovely collection of Enki Bilal's latest series. The large format and crisp printing shows off his artwork well. Unfortunately, the story is disorienting (not helped by the fact that the primary female characters seem to be duplicates of one another), and the 'evil for evil's sake' villain is less than intriguing.
Moreover, the (uncredited?) translation is extremely poor, with frequently awkward phrasing which only adds to the confusion. The smaller and muddier tpd edition by Les Humanoids, translated by Tara Otis & Sasha Watson, is much superior and a much easier read, assisted by the graceful lettering of Stephane Martinez & Nathalie Rocher.

القصة بشكل عام مثيرة. الشخصيات والأحداث صعبة المتابعة بسبب الأسماء وكذلك بعض العبارات الغامضة والتي لا اعلم هل هي من المترجم أم من النص نفسه. لاحظت نفس الرأي عند من قرأها بالإنجليزية(لغتها الأصلية فرنسية).

I disegni di Bilal sono affascinanti, con colori sporchi che riescono anche a non perdere mai di chiarezza ed espressività.
La trama è qualcosa di sconvolgente, con un continua seguire piste false che fino alla fine ti fanno dubitare di chi sia il vero protagonista della storia (nonostante il titolo dovrebbe dare un'indirizzata). A volte rischia di essere eccessivamente involuto, ci sono un paio di punti in cui sembra perdersi, ma si risolleva subito.

Le début est bien expliqué et il y a plein de question sur la relation entre l'homme ,la machine et la religion qui sont intérressantes mais moins j'ai moins accroché sur la fin.
