Don't expect a conventional biography; instead, Dorothy Caruso has written a memoir of her life with her husband. Caruso married the author four years before his death, so this is not a definitive portrait of the great singer. But for what it is, it's a very affecting book. Mrs. Caruso gives us a real feel for the person her husband was, and it's obvious, 24 years later, that she never quite got over losing him.
Mrs. Caruso includes many of the letters Enrico wrote her during his concert tours. They are presented as written, which is both touching and frustrating. English was not Caruso's first language, and his spelling and vocabulary are idiosyncratic, to say the least. It's very interesting to see what he wrote without any editing, but I wasn't always sure what he was trying to say.
The conventional wisdom about Caruso is that he was the greatest operatic tenor of all time. As a Caruso enthusiast, I believe that his recordings, even with the primitive recording techniques of the time, bear this out - he was indeed the best. This is a must for all Caruso fans.
Really interesting story if you don't know anything about Enrico Caruso and even if you do its told by his wife and is unreadably moving, these guys in this era were truly stars in the best sense of the word.
I really like it....a heartbreaking story of a great singer, a true "rock star" of his time, with a big heart and old Italian ideas...not wonderful writing but sincere loving words...maybe too many.
I did not want to read this because of any great interest in Caruso. I am just running low on books to choose from. HIs widow wrote it about the three years of their life together , his last three years of life. Found the letters he wrote her on his tour of mexico to be of some interest . It was a pleasant half day read. I guess he was the Elvis of his day. No he was bigger, as he was loved by all ages.
