This is such a wholesome book with a very happy/cute ending. Pat peoples is not like anyone else in his family. He’s mentally ill, and can’t remember anything from his past. He’s let out of the “bad place” that he was in for years, and is working to become the man his wife wanted him to be. He’s destined to find Nikki, but not everything goes to plan. This book was a slower read, but overall I really enjoyed it. I think there are a lot of good takeaways from this book as well! I gave it three stars because I wouldn’t reach for it again, but I did enjoy it!

I love this book! The characters are so perfectly reflective of real people. I loved being able to characters. Although the language could have been toned down a bit. It's a unanticipated but what can be anticipated with mental health.

the story was cute. it was a good story, although overall it falls short in two places. the writing style was very boring. i wasn’t captivated by the narrator and the sentences were uninteresting. i suppose what i have a problem with is the prose. or the prosody maybe. the other place i felt disappointed by was the women in the book. they didn’t feel 3-dimensional, they felt like man accessories and character development tools for the men. tiffany was his fantasy so it’s important she was flat and unrealistic — she was represented through pat’s point of view. but his mom was arguably not a character outside of her marriage and family, which again might be intentionally saying something about the demands women place on men in that kind of household. his love interest hardly speaks, hardly seems to be a character at all until pat needs her to be. i felt alienated by the way women were represented in this book, whether it was intentional or not, and i kept finding myself wishing we got to see more of how pat looked from the outside. we would get a more complete picture of pat and the family if we were able to see a bit of his mom’s point of view. not initially, that would ruin the reveal, but about 2/3rds of the way through it could have been an interesting insertion. anyway, it was still a fun read & i think they tried to make certain points about masculinity and mental health, they could have driven those points home a little harder with a more deft hand.

I really love the messages from the POV of Pat Peoples here. I can see that screwed up person can be more nicely behaving if they're self-conscious about their condition, way much better than average people.

Tbh, i love the movie much more than this novel. Almost all important plots are in the movie but not put in the same sequence as in the book, which leads the movie has different ending scene from the book. The points are well delivered however (from book into movie).

The weakness from the book i can say that the author put the american football stories SO MANY and SO details, which I don't mind to not grasping the vibes.

The best part of the novel is that, the characters are effortlessly humorous and mean at the same time, which are understandable practiced in our daily life. Yet hurtful.

Last but not least, please watch this five star movie! This novel is not advised to be read before watching the movie, bcoz the actors really livening the odd emotions and behavior in the novel.

Not really a big fan of multitudinous f-bombs, so I naturally found that very discouraging.
However, there was a mantra that the main character recited to himself repeatedly that I actually think about often. "I'm practicing being kind instead of being right." That's something that I perceive as having endless application possibilities, but the initial and obvious usage is towards marriage. Sometimes, it is more important to exert your energies towards being kind to the other person than forcing them to concede your correct viewpoint. Sometimes, being right is irrelevant. Especially in parenting, haha.

Fairly different than the movie. One of my all time favorite books. The character development is really unique and you can really feel what Pat is going through. Would recommend to anyone looking for a cute "rom com" type of read.

listen alright it’s a really hard read but the ending is very sweet and everything comes together well in the end i still am not a fan of how much religion is mentioned or of pat in general but it’s still a solid 3 stars for the last 100 pages just tough to get through the rest sometimes

Hace mucho que no disfrutaba tanto una lectura. No de esos disfrutes en que te devoras cada capítulo sin pausas ni interrupciones, sino de ese tipo que se parece a cuando recibes algo muy rico y exclusivo de regalo (un chocolate, un café especial) y lo vas consumiendo poco a poco, saboreando cada momento en que te regalas un pedacito o una tacita...
Cuando una película se vuelve una de tus favoritas al punto de que ya olvidaste cuantas veces las has visto o has escuchado el soundtrack, y de pronto un día te encuentras con el libro que la inspiró, tú te lo compras sin dudar.
No importa si está en otro idioma.
Tú te lo compras.
Por fortuna, me defiendo lo suficiente como para haber conseguido avanzar por cada una de sus páginas hasta el final (con postits en cada página de las palabras para buscar en el diccionario naturalmente 😅) y ahí en la última página fue donde me llegó ese vacío que nos dejan los libros que nos nutrieron el kokoro.
No soy de aquell@s que condenan las adaptaciones cinematográficas si es que no son calcados al libro, porque tengo claro que uno y otro son dos obras diferentes, que aprecio en su forma particular.
Lo que si valoro es que ver primero la película te da una especie de esqueleto material donde montar luego la historia de la novela. Y así leer este libro me permitió conocer a Pat, a su familia, a Tiffany y al resto de los personajes con mayor profundidad, si se puede decir, pero ya con una imagen bien definida.
Sin querer hacer spoilers para quien quiera ver la peli o leer el libro, rescato que los personajes son bastante cotidianos, como tú como yo, con problemas, reacciones y temores que con seguridad muchos hemos vivido.
La salud mental emerge como una realidad mucho más común de lo que se piensa. No tanto en lo que se refiere a diagnósticos clínicos, sino a cómo se vive en el día a día, con sus vaivenes emocionales, mecanismos de defensa, comunicación disfuncional y con todo eso además de tener que lidiar con la sociedad.
Con tu familia.
Contigo mismo.
La estructura sigue el formato de un diario personal donde Patrick va haciendo un registro diario de sus experiencias desde el momento en que su madre firma los documentos para egresarlo a su domicilio desde una residencia de pacientes de salud mental en Baltimore en adelante.
Toda la obra te transmite (eso es al menos lo que yo percibí) la idea de que tras las dificultades de la vida siempre asoman aprendizajes y fortalezas que puedes obtener.
También habla de disciplina, superarte tí mismo, humildad, compasión y empatia.
De ahí el concepto de "silver lining" que me parece se refiere a esos rayos de luz que se pueden apreciar en el borde de las nubes. Si no me equivoco es una expresión que se usa para referirse a la esperanza o a mantener una actitud positiva ante la adversidad (si alguien lo entiende mejor, agradecería su aporte ☺️🙏)
Algunos detalles en que difiere la película de la novela son: orden de los eventos, canciones que menciona Pat, apellidos, aspectos temporales en que se desarrolla la trama y el baile central.
En fin, un libro para mi gusto muy recomendable, dinámico, humano, sin héroes ni mucha fantasía.

Bonus track: Pat tanto en la película como en la novela se fija la meta de leer el listado de Novelas que su esposa dicta en su clase de literatura para que no lo llamen "bufón analfabeto" en el círculo social de Nikki. Gracias a esto me autospoilee varias novelas que quiero leer en algún momento 😅, pero bueno, nada que hacer, aquí van:

Great book highly recommend it. Really explains the reality of what people live in and how some people have this sort of life. Also going to Philly every weekend to see my family really puts a kick in my step every time I read the word EAGLES!!! :)

[3,0] É um livro curto, fácil de ler e a leitura flui bastante. Os personagens são muito bem construídos e a forma simples como o personagem principal vê o mundo é doce e te faz se pegar sorrindo em algumas partes, autor sabe como prender o leitor, mas, ao mesmo tempo, é muito denso em algumas partes, principalmente nas páginas que tratam do amor dos personagens com relação a futebol americano; são páginas e páginas e páginas de passes e lances de futebol que, sinceramente, me faziam revirar os olhos. Uma coisa que me irritou também foram os pequenos spoilers de algumas outras histórias famosas que estavam na minha meta de leituras, mas não acho que seja realmente UMA COISA... Enfim, a história é muito bem amarrada e a trama se completa em muitos aspectos legais que cativam o leitor. Super recomendo a leitura por que faz você pensar sobre o outro lado do pessimismo que geralmente vivemos, mas não foi nada de "cair o...".
