1944. Trixie has only ever known turmoil. As a teenager, she covered up the terrible truth of her father's death, and was forced on the run with her pregnant mother. Now, in an attempt to build a life for herself, Trixie becomes a singer in the pubs and clubs of Gosport. Despite her success, her heart is set on finding the younger brother she had to leave behind in Portsmouth years earlier. And little does she know that fate has yet more cruel twists in store . . .
June Hampson was born in Gosport, Hampshire, where she still lives. She has had a variety of jobs including waitress, fruit picker, barmaid, shop assistant and market trader selling second-hand books.
Thoroughly enjoyed this . First time of reading a novel by June Hampson and will certainly be researching more of her books. There was an unexpected twist in the story which I didn't see coming at first but thankfully it didn't go into detail and certainly did nothing to spoil the story. I felt so sorry for poor Trixie but I am glad things turned out well in the end for her. A very good read.
I absolutely loved this book, the characters are brought to life by a very talented author indeed. It was like watching a movie but the words were narrated . We have the war, terrible cruelty, abusive husbands, rape, violence and amid all this we have the story of Trixie, her mother and brother Teddy. Such hardship but truly a heartfelt story by an author who is great at her craft. I would highly recommend this book to all
