Tiny, warm-hearted, totally devoted to her charming rogue of a husband, Lizzie mothers her brood of nephews and nieces through the perils of the war-torn capital, makes a home for them in the bomb shelters of underground London, launches them on the roller-coaster of life, and stands by with help and encouragement. For Lizzie is a survivor, an irresistible heroine with the unquenchable optimism, the great heart, the indomitable courage that sum up the spirit of the East End.
Lena Kennedy (June 15, 1914 - August 1 1986), was an English author. Her books were mostly historic romantic fiction set in and around the East End of London where she lived for all her life. Some of her books, including her autobiography, were published posthumously.
She appeared, as a subject, on the television programme This Is Your Life shortly before her death in 1986.
Working my way through my bookshelves, I came across this book which I've read several times many years ago.
I've got a few of Lena Kennedy's books & some of them, whilst being ok stories, can be hard work as you plough through them. This book however was one of her best; the characters are true East End people and they are warm, friendly and are full of character.
I found it a relatively easy read and a pleasant read and glad that I decided to read it again. Now to and it over to someone else to see how they get on with it!
I love all of Lena Kennedy books. This one is very good. Starting when the characters are all young children and finishing when all are grown and the next-generation are growing. It's well worth buying
Excellent story, by one of my favourite easy reading authors; I’ll be sad when I’ve read them all. I love the gentle stories and the historical aspects of old London, most of it gone now which is sad. I really enjoyed this gently winding tale.
I was only 12 when I ready this book. It was my second proper book to read. I was asked to choose a book in the school library on my first day at senior school and chose this one... I was hooked after that and read all of hers.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book which is an amazing story from start to finish! Lizzie is just a young girl at the start and the story takes you all through the Blitz of World War II until she is an old lady! Her love for Bobby, her husband, never falters despite many trials + tribulations but all ends very happily in the end.
I am a determined reader. I determined to finish this book even though this is utter pap. there is nothing to this book. La-di-dah. Here we go tripping merrily through life. Do not pay good money for this book. I wish I had my $5.00 back.
