DNF...What happened? I thought we had something. *tear*

After reading book 1 An Heiress at Heart (Love's Grace, #1) by Jennifer Delamere for review via Netgalley and feeling pleasantly surprised to enjoy a Christian/Inspirational Historical romance I decided to purchase this book without any obligations attached. I was disappointed.

"An Heiress at Heart" was sweet with a slow build to the romance. I really liked it. Perhaps, I thought, I've been a snob toward Christian romance. "Heiress" didn't preach. I wasn't hammered over the head with the bible. Not all Christians look and sound like a televangelist! : /
The parallels to faith-based teachings was subtle and not unique to Christianity. "Don't throw stones!" Simple.

"A Lady Most Lovely" seemed promising. But I was hit over the head...a lot. The hero chastised himself so many times for cursing. He reminded himself 'good Christians' refrained from foul language. It felt as though the publisher, editor, or whoever told Ms. Delamere that her last book didn't contain enough inspirational messages and here's your new quota.

I felt the attraction between the hero and heroine, but the romance was lacking. After months of neglecting this book and only reading halfway I have decided to close this book.

Highly enjoyable story - A great historical romance - I felt like I was reading Quinn, London & Ashley all rolled in to one. (Which is a good thing) Only this was a "Clean" romance with a Christian faith message in the back ground - Unique (2me) for books written in this time period & set in the upper class of the Ton - It was a fast paced story that carried all the way till the end and I didn't feel confused not reading the 1st book in the series it stood well on its own - though I do confess I did order the 1st book to see what I missed. I would suggest this book to all my friends who love historical romances - especially the ones who find themselves occasionally skimming thru the too many repeat love scenes to get back to the story line =)

Thanks Goodreads for the opportunity to review and providing me with a great new author find!

This book is the charming sequel to Delamere's first novel AN HEIRESS AT HEART. It was fun to re-meet Tom Poole and his sister Lizzie, now properly married, and to see Tom struggle to decide if he belonged again in England or back in Australia. Of course, seeing Margaret Vaughn across the dance floor made London look sweeter … but complications set in right away when Tom learned she was engaged. And although Margaret looked cool, calm, collected and beautiful … she, too, had her secrets. You will enjoy how these two strong-willed characters find their way gradually, through many mishaps and understandings, to a happy ending in this lovely Regency historical romance.

Two feisty leads take us on a high powered trip into the English countryside of Lincolnshire in a desperate tug of war for soluble ownership of the 200 year old holding of Moreton Hall.

Colourful characters, picturesque descriptions that carried me to the settings, and suspense filled situations that intrigued me with this drama to the end.

And what an end! Worth every hour reading to enjoy the resolution of this intensely emotional story!

Jennifer Delamere has done it again. Another great story wrapped up in a world filled with characters you can fall in love with. I did not want to put the book down because I had to see how it would end! I felt I was in England riding alongside Tom and Maggie. Loved it!

OH, why did I wait so long to read this! I think the number of pages scared me. However, It's such a good read you don't know your reading that many pages. They fly by. I love the sassy strength and stubbornness of her. I love the underlined passion between the two that by the end your pumping the air with your fist or sighing in satisfaction at the ending. A great read. Trust building and forgiveness in this powerful book of love.

Probably my least favorite of the trilogy but still good! There is a good amount of suspense throughout along with romance and overall happy themes.

Margaret is one of the wealthiest young women in London. She's in town to find a husband. Her fiance Paul is another wealthy titled person and the local gossip is talking about the wedding of the year for the perfect couple. Mr. Tom Poole is a wealthy man, but comes from a poor family. He earned his wealth in the gold mines of Australia. The ton is reluctant to accept him, but his wealth is apparently speaking for them. When Margaret finds herself in a bind she learns who she can really depend on.

The characters are real, flawed, and fun to read about. I was a little nervous reading the second book in the series. But the book can be read as a stand-alone. There are definite mentions to the previous story, but I wasn't once left feeling lost or confused. It did, however, make me find the first book so I could read it as well. I didn't realize the book was Christian fiction until I had read a bit into the book. There are very subtle references that some might not even pick up on. So for the person who might normally stray away from CF, I would recommend giving this book a try. It certainly isn't preachy or in your face. I, personally, would have preferred more of a Christian feel since the book was labeled as such, but it was a great book that I will be keeping. The author does a great job of engaging the reader.

I received this book free of charge from Goodreads & Hachette Book Group in exchange for my honest review.

I recently received a Goodreads first-reads copy of A Lady Most Lovely by Jennifer Delamere. In 1852 London, everyone thinks socialite Margaret Vaughn is wealthy. She's really in debt, thanks to her late father, and must marry to save her estate. She thinks her fiancée is rich, but he's just a poor social climber. She is saved from ruin by Tom Poole, a self-made man of poor birth. Tom offers to marry Margaret, because he has fallen in love with her. Tom has baggage in his past, and Margaret is trying to keep her estate from her greedy cousin. Although I had no problem with the sweet, clean story that had strong Christian undertones, I found the pace of the story to be quite slow. I never connected with the characters, and I didn't really care for Maggie at all. I had no trouble following the premise of the story, even though I had not read book one in the series. I did feel, however, that portions of the storyline were left unfinished. I also did not feel that any romance between Tom and Margaret seemed really believable. I'm sorry to say that I could not wait to be finished with this book. I had hoped to enjoy it more, so I was disappointed.

I wan this book in a goodreads giveaway. I've never read anything by the author so i was not sure what to expect. It turns out it is a Christian romance novel, which i was actually exicted about, since i tend to like my romance novels without sex and foul language.

I enjoyed the writting and the secondary characters. My biggiest problem with the book was that while the author let us see the intial attraction between Margaret and Tom, instead of building their relationship, letting us see them falling in love, she focused too much on Tom's sister and her secret. So at the end, i didn't really care one way or another if it worked our or not, because we didn't really get to know or fall in love with either of them.

I would not read the book again, but might try the author again.

I really wanted to like it since it is a clean romance novel but it just stretched things too far. The plot was unbelievable and some things were brought up but never followed through on. The ending was also very abrupt. I wanted more wrap up. Maybe the next novel in the trilogy would flesh out the loose ends but it left this one with a odd ending. Also for being a Christian novel it felt more than a little tacked on. Mostly it was our hero trying to control his tempter and thinking about how he shouldn't be something because it wouldn't be Christian.

Soulless, awful, depressing, infuriating. Two characters who are nothing but awful to each other without any of the charm often present in the romance tropes. An utter waste of my time and I can only be glad that I borrowed this book from the library and didn't waste any money on it in addition to time.

A Lady Most Lovely is about Lizzie's brother Tom, who is a bit rough around the edges having not been raised among the wealthy. He is quickly enamored by Margaret Vaughn. Her main focus in maintaining her land. Their romance is certainly not traditional, but has a very sweet ending.

I look forward to continuing the series.

I was one of the lucky winners of this book. I have to say that I like the story but what turn me off was one of the main characters, Margaret. She was a brat and I could not like her characters. Overall it was an okay book.

I wanted to like this, but the characters just seemed rather flat and caricatures of stereotypes rather than growing or developing (doting couple, quick-tempered man trying to overcome it, proud single woman, shameless flirt...)

After thoroughly enjoying the first installment of this trilogy, as well as her latest release, I decided to order the other two in the series. And , while I did enjoy this one, and it was a good story, I felt that it wasn’t quite up to par with An Heiress at Heart.

Tom is a great hero, and very much representative of the times he was living in, where working class people found success, while many of the “old-moneyed” and titled folks simultaneously disdained them and came to see the benefits of marrying them to save their declining estates or cover their debts. We also see especially at the beginning, that he often lets his impulses get him into trouble, such as starting a physical altercation with someone at his own wedding without thinking about how that will be perceived by others in society.

I didn’t dislike Margaret, but I had a hard time finding anything likable or memorable about her, aside from the fact that she’s supposedly beautiful. She does grow up a bit by the end, but I didn’t really understand why Tom ended up falling in love with her.

The plot also felt a bit too easily wrapped up. I expected Denault and/or Spencer to pose more of a threat, especially when they are seen together at the wedding, but the most threatening it gets is that all of Tom’s and his sister’s secrets are exposed, and there isn’t a climactic confrontation.

But I was glad to see that Geoffrey and Lizzie are happy, and that Lizzie gives birth partway through the book. Plus, James continues to be an affable rake, generating a little too much excitement on my part to read his book.

After being so pleasantly surprised by "An Heiress at Heart," this book really disappointed me. I thought I'd like Tom given his neat background, and for a lot of the book I did, but the way he treated Maggie and others and never got over his rage issues was for me, frustrating. The Tom whose perspective we read from and the Tom that Maggie sees are totally different people. And I didn't like the one from her perspective who spent the whole book trying to butt into her life and do everything for her. And while I get that her whole thing is always having looked out for herself, he felt very secretive and controlling the whole time.
I also was disappointed that most of the action just never happened. The whole book builds up to a dramatic conflict once Lizzie's past is revealed which just fizzles out at the end of the book. Maggie tries to seduce Tom which goes absolutely nowhere. Tom isn't arrested at all. It was interesting, the whole book, but very slow and with less of a steady plot than the first book (which had just about the wildest plot ever).
I liked Maggie well enough, but found no actual romantic chemistry between her and Tom. The whole time she was a little frightened by him, and then very lustful. I'm cool with sexual chemistry in a book but theirs never went beyond that. Some more scenes of them just hanging out would have been nice, without any disguised suspicion.
I'm still going to read the third book, but my trust in Delamere is forever shaken. Here's hoping that the "a cad reformed" book is more fun!

I love this author’s more recent books so much I decided to work my way through her backlist. This is one of her earliest efforts, published a decade ago, so it’s understandably not her best novel. It contains anachronistic language and Americanisms (not uncommon for new US writers of historical fiction set in the UK). In addition, the romantic relationship is too physical for my taste (though nothing explicit) and takes up too much focus and space, to the detriment of fully developing the characters. I also often didn’t much like the hero, and the ending felt rushed to me.

However, the overall writing is solid, the plot kept my interest, and there are some intriguing historical details. The overt spiritual and emotional arcs are a bit choppy, but the subtler themes are beautifully inspiring. So while this isn’t among my favorites from this author, it’s worth reading and I can happily recommend it to historical romance readers who look for romance first and history second.

3.5 stars. I was really excited about this one because I’ve enjoyed the first novel of this series and Delamere’s other books. However, this didn’t live up to my excitement by the end. It was very good and kept me engaged, but I thought it got a bit slow by the second half. I wish there was a clearly growth in the romance between Tom and Margaret. Her initial resistance makes sense and Tom doesn’t really do much to woo her, so it’s harder to see how she seems to shift her emotions overnight. I can see it start to build, but perhaps not as much as I’d have liked, especially because the book feels like it just ends. A little more wrap-up would’ve been nice. Margaret seems to show more growth than Tom by the end…perhaps we’ll see more of them in the third book. Still a great story and a fast, fun read! Just wasn’t as strong of a book as I usually find with Delamere.

Very fun classic romance read. I appreciated the well-written characters! Neither love interest was perfect, neither were they terrible. I related to both their perspectives and choices well.
There was no spice, but the romance was written so well I don't think readers would miss it.
This is also the second in a trilogy, but it was written so that you could jump in the middle of the story without a problem.

Nice little romantic novel set in London and UK countryside. It has the Christian themes of faith, forgiveness, prayer, change and trust, but all in a gentle manner. This isn't a strictly researched historical novel with a few added characters, but a lovely historical setting in an entertaining novel.

Reluctant marriage

I thoroughly enjoyed this book even though I want a throttle both of them for not telling each other anything because I don't trust the truth but in the end I finally found each other.

A girl sometimes has to go to extreme measures to save the family estate! Tom Poole is a rough Australian but he has a ton of money, just what is needed. These two should even each other out to make a successful couple.

This is the book I choose strictly by cover. I find that for the most part, choosing by cover really doesn't steer me wrong. This one had some good qualities and some super annoying ones, but overall was an ok romance.

Tom Poole is a self made man. He found success in the gold mines of Australia and is now back in London to visit his sister. He meets Margaret at her engagement party to another rich society gentleman and is immediately struck dumb by her presence. When that engagement falls through, he's in the right place to step in and offer his arm in a marriage of convenience. (As it turns out, both Margaret and the ex-finance are only playing at being rich, and are each marrying each other for their money, that neither has, so this works fine for me.)

The plot on this one worked well for me. I was able to believe in the situation and see how these too people happened to be together. (Too often in romance they are together in a time and place that doesn't fit the setting, for example a titled man spending all his time with a governess.) Tom is rough around the edges, since he wasn't raised with polite rules and manners of society. He often has a hard time behaving correctly, and it comes off as pretty charming. He has a bit of a problem with his temper tho, and rather than being a integral fault he needed to overcome, it really just came across as something the author added to make him "interesting." (I've written about this type of thing before, it annoys me.) Margaret is pretty rigid. She's been working on saving her family estate from debtors since she took over and is legitimately stressed to her breaking point. I can understand where a lot of her motivation and reserve comes from, she literally can not afford to make a mistake. Individually I found them both to be fairly true to their character, and not interchangeable with other romance novel heroes/heroines.

These strongly written characters lose some of the appeal when Delamere puts them together. Tom is so patronizing of Margaret, despite the fact that she has managed to masquerade as the season's wealthiest heiress for years. He steps in, and takes over. He speaks to her in ways that would have me walking out, keeping secrets that might be other people's secrets (his sister has an entire backstory in book one that is a vital part of this book, it's annoying to be so intertwined) but that have a direct effect on his marriage. When they ultimately clash over this, I had a hard time rooting for a reunion. Ultimately they do reunite, of course, but I kind of felt that the groveling was backwards. Regardless, they do have a lovely reunion and the book ends with a happily ever after.

One final note, this is a Christian romance. I was unaware of this when I requested it, but probably would have done so anyway. Tom is new Christian, and is constantly turning to God in prayer, and Margaret is not a Christian at all, and is slightly bemused by his antics. Overall, it wasn't overwhelming but there were a few scenes where it felt awkwardly written in. This is my first Christian romance tho, so I have nothing to compare this aspect to. That said, there is very little in the way of sex, and none of it graphic, and any lust is immediately suppressed. I don't require sex scenes to enjoy a romance novel, but I do love the tension and heat as characters get to know each other. What little of that is in this one is turned away from before it can develop, and I found that disappointing.

A Lady Most Lovely was published on September 24th, and my thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read it.
