I love everything about this book! It has a simple, sleek layout, which appeals to me a lot. The overall message here is very positive. The book contains delicious recipes, gorgeous photography and all kinds of tips on everything from pantry staples and cooking utensils to making cooking fun. I especially love the mantra on pages 62 & 63: Consistency Moderation Balance Exercise. I will admit that I had preconceived notions about this book prior to reading it. What do I, a stay at home mom of two young children, have in common with a 26 year old Crossfit competitor and a former Marine? How can these two fit, beautiful people speak to me? Well, speak to me they have through this great cookbook that feels like a journey toward a healthier life!
A delightful new cookbook by well-respected bloggers Juli Bauer (PaleoOMG) and George Bry-ant (Civilized Caveman), The Paleo Kitchen brings an exciting array of recipes with a twist, foods to expand one’s culinary skills.
The full-color book has a photograph for each recipe (artfully taken by George Bryant) and the most helpful getting started list of tips I’ve seen in any of the cookbooks. Juli’s and George’s sto-ries of how they came to the paleo lifestyle are inspiring, and their meeting at a Paleo FX work-shop is what inspired this collaboration. Tips on getting started on your paleo journey should be required reading for everyone. Of particular interest is the advice on making sure you are eating enough throughout the day if you’re also beginning a new workout program.
I particularly liked the advice on making your kitchen a fun place to spend time—especially good advice if you want to introduce children into the paleo experience. The Paleo Kitchen Makeover is superb. Best advice and photos on how to organize and which fresh foods should be consumed in which seasons, as well as what non-perishables should be on your pantry shelves. There’s even a top ten kitchen implements to have (high quality knives, food processor, immersion blender, to name a few).
If you’re really new to paleo, especially take note of the How to Shop Smarter section (key rule: shop the perimeter of the store: that’s where the “real food” lurks—the produce, meats and dairy, and while many do not consume dairy, that’s where you’ll find the grass-fed butter and eggs.)
There’s a section on sticking to paleo which suggests 1. Consistency, 2. Moderation, 3. Balance and 4. Exercise. Following this are the various chapters with recipes for Breakfast, Starters and Snacks, Soups and Hearty Salads. The various meat, poultry and fish dishes, Sides, drinks, Des-serts and Condiments. The index is easy to follow with photos from each chapter, also a recom-mended reading list and tear-out guides, which I prefer to leave in the book.
Some of the recipes selected for my “Try these first” list include Rosemary Sun-Dried Tomato Meatballs with Tomato Sauce (p. 183); Honey, Dijon & Rosemary Grilled Sweet Potatoes (p. 217) and the Fluffy Blueberry Pancakes (p. 95 and pictured on the cover).
I look forward to an exciting adventure as I eat my way through their amazing recipes. Kudos to both Juli and George for providing us with a truly fantastic cookbook.
This a great cookbook for clean eaters or those following a paleo lifestyle! The first section of the book contains information about the why and how of eating paleo including sections perforated for keeping nearby or taking to the store with you. I've tried many of these recipes, and they have all been delicious. One of my favorite things about this cookbook is that the ingredients are mostly easy to find, which is not always true for paleo recipes. If you're interested in eating healthier without sacrificing taste, this a cookbook you can't pass up!
Such an amazing cookbook! Beautifully put together and fun to read through. Very informative about paleo cooking and where to begin. The recipes are fantastic and you actually want to make them. If you've done The Whole 30, this book is a great companion to it.
I’m not a huge fan of restrictive diets but paleo baking is a passion of mine: low glycemic sugars = no sugar crashes :) nothing too new and exciting here although the coffee smoothie is destined to be my new summer go-to treat!
Love the organization and illustrations in this book! Tons of helpful tips and charts at the very beginning and almost all the recipes look appetizing. Can't wait to start using this cookbook!
Many recipes in here sound so wonderful. I loved reading their stories and why paleo is the right option for so many people. Also, they included many tips that could help anyone in the kitchen!
I got this cookbook for Christmas and have tried a new recipe from this book almost every day since then. My husband and I really like these recipes and will put them in our regular rotation.
A lot of these recipes seem really fancy and more like they were trying to come up with the most interesting combinations rather than everyday eating type things. But they mostly all look delicious!
Yes, the pictures are pretty. I liked the dairy-free emphasis. And there were some new ideas for breakfast and dessert.
But the main dishes were disappointing. Some were nothing new, some were too involved (I'll never make pulled pork just so I can use it in meatloaf), and some had too many sweet components. Back to the library with this book!
Update: I made a couple of recipes and continue to be unimpressed. The delicata squash frittata was beautiful but incredibly bland. The blueberry pancakes had far too little liquid (and yes, I measured the flours by weight to be accurate) and offered no guidance about how many servings to expect from the recipe.
Penned by the authors of paleomg.com and civilizedcavemancooking.com, this book is brimming with personality. “Hand written” notes with arrows pointing to different sections of lists or paragraphs give the book a personalized feel, as if you’ve borrowed it from a friend. Recipes don’t start until page 73; the whole beginning is dedicated to personal histories, the Paleo lifestyle, tips, background, and prep steps. But all of the pages are beautiful, engaging and easy to read.
The initial section – Breakfast recipes – had me doubting this book was going to be for me. There were lots of recipes for baked goods (waffles, muffins, pancakes, cinnamon rolls) using almond, coconut, and tapioca flours. While many people I know would be swooning, I’m just not into that. I quickly came around once I got into the other sections, though. I discovered a wide array of easy, delicious looking dishes built on standard ingredients brought together in unique combinations. You know they’re doing something right if I’m actually interested in and bookmarking to try things like chicken salad!
The recipes were all things I could see easily fitting into a busy life – either as every day go-to’s, or as special occasion treats (those being mostly the desserts featured at the end of the book). I have been completely won over, and decidedly recommend this.
A lot of paleo cookbooks are filled with recipes I can't use. I don't eat pork, and almond flour is too expensive. While this cookbook does contain pork recipes, and recipes using almond flour, there are even more recipes which use neither. I picked this book up at my local "Friends of the Library" secondhand bookstore. I didn't think I'd end up buying it, but when I saw that most of the baking recipes use coconut flour instead of almond, and the wonderful looking beef and chicken dishes, I had to shell out the three dollars! I'm glad I did. I've already made the chicken thighs with lemony chive pasta (though subbed in thyme since I didn't have chives).I also baked the chocolate cayenne cake. It has no flour in it at all and was a hit with my family and friends. It definitely has kick! I also like that the recipes don't have a lot of hard to find, or expensive ingredients.
I will say, that as a person with highly sensitive celiac disease, finding nuts that haven't been cross contaminated with gluten (and that are affordable) is a challenge for me. So, there are some recipes I won't be making for a while.
I'm already planning to make a few more meals from The Paleo Kitchen this week.
I got this book from our library and it's in high demand so I'm unable to renew it so I've only gotten to a couple of recipes, but have noted many. I guess I'm going to have to buy my own copy! My guys loved the Cinnamon Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread. My husband and I loved the Fluffy Blueberry Pancakes. I really wanted to make the Vanilla White Peach Muffins, but where do you find dried peaches? I've looked at all of our local stores - including Whole Foods! The Cinnamon Rolls look amazing! The other recipes that I've noted are Pulled Pork Nachos, Spinach & Artichoke Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms, Sage & Shallot Delicata Squash Soup, Pumpkin Tomato Soup, Chicken Zoodle Soup, Twice-Baked Stuffed Butternut Squash, Perfect Meatballs with Sage Sweet Potato Noodles, Maple Cinnamon Pecan Butter, and Vanilla Bean Almond Butter. There are a number of other delicious sounding recipes as well, but I don't think our boys would go for them. I feel like we'll eat so much more healthy when we are empty nesters! Not that I'm wishing the time away!
This is a "feel good" paleo book, has some good information has far as what gadgets to have in your kitchen, spices and such, but as far as making paleo diet a lifestyle there are other books with better information.
Congrats to Juli Bauer (PaleoOMG) and George Bryant (Civilized Caveman) for creating one of the best paleo cookbooks I've had the pleasure of owning ... and being inspired by!
The photos are amazing. The recipes are well-written and easy to follow. What seems impossible - paleo cinnamon rolls? - is, indeed, quite possible and amazingly delicious. I love this book.
No matter which other ones you have (I have a number of very good ones), get this one! It is informative and very well done. The photos are beautiful! It has everything I could ask for. They did an outstanding job!
My absolute favorite paleo cookbook. Great for those interested in switching to a paleo lifestyle. This cookbook will answer all of your questions, give you menu ideas, and will help you to stock your pantry.
I was excited about this book, as I love Juli's blog. I found the recipes boring. I didn't really want to make any of them....and that is never the case when I get a new cookbook. Underwhelmed.
I absolutely love this cookbook. We have tried almost every recipe and so far they are all great. The Chili is my new favorite. The tricks and tips for keeping up a Paleo Lifestyle are quite handy as well.
So far so good. We've tried 2 recipes that were fantastic (blueberry pancakes & perfect burger). Also tried the cinnamon rolls but that wasn't worth the effort to us. Not bad by any means but the ingredients are too expensive & the effort too much for the result.
