Only days before they're supposed to get married, Masayuki's fiancée, Miki, disappears without a trace, taking with her the money they had been planning to use to buy a house together. Masayuki starts looking for her and ends up having to ask her long estranged younger brother Kouki for help. One thing leads to another, and Masayuki ends up falling in love with Kouki.
First things first: If it hadn't been for the first sex scene, this would have gotten five stars. Because it has just about everything I love, plus some really nice imagery. But while it isn't non-con, it's the usual BL-really-bordering-on-non-con bullshit, and while it wasn't bad enough to make me stop read it, it does tar the rest of the book quite a bit.
But apart from that, it was really moving and hot and sad and bittersweet. Also, it felt rather unusual because the seme's backstory was a lot more sad and moving than the uke's, which made the interaction a lot more interesting. Also, while Masayuki is so passive in the beginning it's frustrating, let's just say that once he figures out what he wants, he has no problems saying it. (I was really apprehensive when reading the final confrontation scene, but it was awesome. Apart from the bit where he tells Miki that she'll definitely find a nice guy because she is so pretty and can cook and sew. But well.. I'm not reading this kind of novel expecting it to be some kind of feminist manifesto.)
The image of the "cat in the shadow" and its implications was very well chosen and nicely written; it touched me a lot.
And three of the sex scenes (it was a long book, so there were suprisingly many of them) were amazing. The first time they have penetrative sex (I can't think of a non-crude way to say that right now) was so intensely written.. I was actually reading this while in the break room at work which was definitely a mistake. *coughs*
But the best thing was that there was a really beautiful h/c scene as well, the kind I pretty much always want to read. I don't know why I have such a thing for people caring for people with colds, but there you go.
I'm not 100% satisfied with Kouki's new choice of career, but well, all in all this was really a great read. I'm not sure if I have another of this author's works here (apart from the one I started to read and then stopped), but it definitely made me want to give her writing another try.
