February 20, 2015Another of my random picks from old stuff in the TBR. I'm starting to think I should maybe just delete anything that's been there for a few years, because I really haven't had much success.
The first scene has our hero, Anthony, drunk and being dragged along to a whorehouse by his friends, who are determined he should lose his virginity. He virtuously thinks he doesn't want to, and that some of the women might not be there willingly, but oh, well, he's horny, so maybe best not to think about icky things and just have a nice time. He only deflates when he comes face to face with the madame, who turns out to be his mother (!). His father had said she was dead, but instead there she is, running the most exclusive brothel in London. Angry Anthony refuses to listen and runs out, where he meets the pretty orange seller he's been ogling for days. He kisses her.
10 years later, scandalous rake Anthony, who also moonlights as a spy (that bit's not even surprising), is still looking for the orange seller. It seems like the forced kiss we just saw turned into sex against a wall, and he remembers the encounter as rape and wants to apologise (because why even consider whether the woman is at all interested in reencountering the man who raped her; Anthony's conscience will feel better, and everyone knows a man's conscience trumps a woman's potential terror). To find the mysterious woman, he's enlisted the help of his secret half-sister, who's a psychic (!). At a party, sis tells him she's finally found the woman and she's right in the next room! Hmmm, none of the servants look like the woman he remembers. But there's something familiar about the mousy vicar's daughter who's a friend of the hostess...
And then he gets home and someone's stolen the rubies he had in his pocket. He remembers the vicar's daughter bumped into him at the party. Aha, she's the former orange seller, and she's a pickpocket! (Don't worry, she's only a pickpocket to fund an orphanage she's founded). He must get the rubies back. And he's been given a new super-special spy mission, to steal a letter a nobleman will receive where someone else has thoughtfully written down all the details of a plot to assassinate the Prince Regent. This will all happen at a house party thrown by a very jealous host. Best bring a mistress with him! But he has no official mistress, and asking one of the many women he randomly fucks will give the silly woman ideas beyond her station. Oh, of course! What better idea than to blackmail the woman to whom he was just about to apologise for raping her into pretending to be his mistress? Because there's no reason she might feel uncomfortable about spending some private quality time with her rapist...
Ugh, what a mess of WTF. It's a cracked setup, plus, this is book 4 of a series, and it shows. Maybe some of the whatthefuckery would make a bit more sense if I'd read the previous 3 books... I'm guessing some of those elements must have been introduced with a bit more care. Here, they're just plunked down. Long-lost mum who runs a brothel! Psychic sister! Harebrained spy plots!
We also have a truly entitled, obnoxious hero I wanted to smack several times. What elastic morals he's got! I got to about 12% on this gem. It might have calmed down a bit after that, but I wasn't going to hang about to find out.
MY GRADE: A DNF, but the bits I read I would probably rate an F.

Siapa bilang peristiwa pertama kali bercinta akan terlupakan oleh seorang pria?? Anthony, Viscount Sommerton tidak bisa melupakan peristiwa tersebut, sebelum dan sesudah dia dalam keadaan mabuk merenggut keperawanan seorang wanita biasa.
Setelah 10 tahun, Anthony bertemu kembali dgn wanita tersebut, dari seorang penjual jeruk menjelma menjadi seorang wanita pemilik panti asuhan kecil, tepat bertetangga dgn rumah bordil Lady Whitely, ibu kandung Anthony yg melarikan diri dari ayahnya. Tapi reuni ini tidak berlangsung baik karena Victoria mencopet kalung milik ibu Anthony yang tadinya akan diserahkan kepada adiknya Genna utk hadiah pernikahannya. Anthony memutuskan utk memeras Victoria dgn cara membayar wanita tersebut utk berpura-pura menjadi kekasih palsunya, utk tugas mata-mata yang ditugaskan kepada dirinya. Ternyata yang tadinya pura-pura menjadi sungguhan, tetapi keduanya masih menyangkal bahwa satu sama lain saling mencintai. Hingga kejadian yang tak terelakkan ketika Victoria diculik dan diancam serta dicambuk dan hampir diperkosa, nyaris terlambat ANthony menolong Victoria dan tembak-menembak mengakibatkan Victoria luka parah.
Akankah Anthony meletakkan martabatnya dan mengakui bahwa dia mencintai Victoria? Sumpah!!! Bikin baper nih novel. Gemas melihat arogansi dan gengsi si Anthony tapi toh dia termehek-mehek juga ketika menjaga Victoria yang sedang sekarat. Sampai dengan akhir cerita, buku ini penuh salah paham, salah sangka, skandal yang memenuhi orangtua Anthony yang bikin saya geleng-geleng kepala.
Duh, jadi kepo abis mau baca lanjutan dan buku terakhirnya.

Bagus ceritanya, walaupun awal nya agak membosankan, aku kasian aja liat nasib si Anna Smith aka Victoria Seaton yg tragis banget, Somerton emang menyebalkan !

Anthony,Lord Somerton, di usia 18 tahun adl cowok baik2, ngincer si gadis cantik penjual jeruk yg tiap hari dia temui lewat di jalan....
Sayangnya, suatu malam di ultah nya ke 18, temen2nya ngajak dia ke brothel. Walaupun berteguh hati akan memberikan keperjakaan nya sama istri nya, tetep aja dia di tarik ke brothel sama kawan2 nya...
Eh,kejutan menanti dia di sana...ibu nya yg dia kita meninggal 8 tahun yll, ternyata masih hidup, dan jadi Madam disana ! OMG ! Kabur lah dia terbirit2 dengan patah hati dari brothel itu. Mabuk2an, dia ketemu si gadis orange di depan gereja, enatah gimana awal nya, kejadian lah malam itu.... [image error]
Sepuluh tahun kemudian , Somerton yg menjadi rake...hobi ke brothel dan sudah berdamai dengan emaknya yg madam itu, hadir di pesta , dan Sophie, saudara lain ibu nya bilang ke dia,kalo gadis orange yg selama 10 tahun ini di cari nya, ada di rumah itu, namanya Anne Smith.
Nyari sampe botak malem itu pun dia ga akan ketemu, soalnya Anne Smith sudah berubah jadi Victoria Seaton, pengurus rumah yatim piatu di sebelah brothel ibu nya. [image error]
Lupa gimana selanjutnya, pokok nya ketauan deh kalo si Victoria nyopet kalung ibu nya Anthony malam itu. Di buat lah kesepakatan kalo Victoria mau pura2 jadi mistress nya selama seminggu di acara keluarga Lord Farleigh di sesa, dia akan dapet duit 5000 Punds, tapi kalung nya mesti di kembaliin.
Setuju, mereka berangkat ke pesta, dengan Victoria nyamar jd mistress nya,Anne Smith, dan di dandanin habis2an oleh Anthony, sampe jd terheran2 dia, Anne jadi cantik dan seksi bangeeeeeetttt..... [image error] sampe Anthony ga bisa melepaskan pandangan dari dia.
Somerton juga punya missi khusus , dia mencurigai Hardy (teman lady Farleigh, Hannah, yg mantan whore , pernah di pake satu dua kali sama Somerton) [image error] dalam rencana gak baik thd raja....
Victoria di jadiin umpan, pura2 tertarik sama Hardy, yg menjijikkan.... [image error]
Alur nya lambat ya sampai 3/4 buku, jadi aku agak lupa nih,kapan pertama kali mereka uhuk2...pokok nya after iitu, mereka uhuk2 terus deh sepanjang 4 hari yg tersisa...lumayan seru dan semangat sekali mereka berdua itu...hihihiihii..... [image error]
Sampai di London, setelah bertengkar, Victoria di culik sama Hardy dan Hannah...disini mulai agak cepat alur nya, Victoria di culik, di telanjangin, di cambuk,sampai hampir di perkosa sama Duke jahat... [image error]
Untung nya Somerton datang tepat pada waktu nya (kayak di pelem2 action gitu) menyelamatkan Victoria yg hampir di perkosa [image error]
Somerton merawat Victoria dengan penuh kasih sayang, cuma Victoria nya sering nguping saat setengah sadar karena demam (bekas tembakan), ngirain Somerton ga mau menikahi dia..untungnya segera di kasih tau kalo Somerton cinta sama Victoria dan cuma mau menikah sama gadis penjual jeruknya tercinta [image error]
Aku tadinya mau kasih 3 bintang, tapi karena akhir2 cerita bisa membuatku menangis, walaupun agak bosan baca nya, aku kasih bintang 4 deh... [image error]

I shook my head so much while reading through the first part of the book, that I made the decision to part ways with the book rather than my head. The so called hero, in his infinite distress at finding his mother still alive and making her living in less than respectable ways, decided to drown his sorrows in the heroine's feminine vault, despite her supposed objections. He went through the next 10 years feeling guilty for taking hers and his own virginities (is there really a plural form?) against a street door and tried to search for her to make amends. When he finally found her, he decided to show her how his lovemaking skills have advanced by almost taking her against another door. The girl, when not repaying her friend's hospitality by robbing said friend's guests blind, was amorously jumping all over her supposed past rapist. It turns out that it was consensual sex after all, as her 18 year old virginal self decided after a few hot glances across the street, that the hero's drunken younger self was the chosen one who had the honour of deflowering her, just because she was in the mood for some lovin' that night. Enough said!

This Holiday themed historical is sure to keep the reader warm on a cold winter’s night.
SCANDAL OF THE SEASON is a connected book to Ms. Kelley’s previous books. It is not necessary at all to read the previous books to enjoy SCANDAL OF THE SEASON. (The previous books are great reads.)
SCANDAL OF THE SEASON takes place during the month of December in the years 1807 and 1817. The hero (Anthony Westfield) and the heroine (Victoria Seaton) meet in 1807 for one memorable night and then don’t see each other for ten years. I loved this part of the couple’s history. It isn’t romantic, but it does create a bond between them that is still there when they meet in 1817.
I loved almost everything about this book. I say almost because for most of the book I didn’t like the hero. He just wasn’t very likable, but I think the story wouldn’t have worked with a likeable hero. Anthony Westfield, Viscount Somerton, doesn’t treat people well. He especially doesn’t treat women well and he treats Victoria Seaton terribly. He does everything from accusing her of being a whore to not trusting her even while he is putting her in danger. I’m not a fan of heroes acting this way, but Ms. Kelley is able to make him truly redeemable by the end of the book. He transforms from a cynical man who is distrustful of everyone around him to a man with faith in the power of love.
Victoria Seaton (aka Anne Smith) is an interesting character for a historical romance. She isn’t a debutant or some illegitimate daughter of a peer. She is the daughter of lower class parents and only escaped becoming a prostitute by meeting the right woman at the right time. Anthony doesn’t know but his presence in her life ten years before has made Victoria the proper woman she has become. I really liked how she had risen above her lot in life and was making her own way.
These two don’t seem to be made for each other in the beginning, but the secrets each character reveals throughout the book changed my opinion. I could see how Victoria could help Anthony deal with his past and how he could help her just by loving her the way that she was.
SCANDAL OF THE SEASON is also full of mystery. Anthony is sent to the house party on a matter of national security and Victoria gets caught up in it as well. I loved how this part of the plot didn’t take away from the romance and even made the relationship between Anthony and Victoria seem more natural. The climax of the mystery coincides with the climax of the relationship and makes for a very powerful ending to the book.
SCANDAL OF THE SEASON is very well written with no parts that felt lagging or boring. There is definite growth in the characters. SCANDAL OF THE SEASON is an almost perfect historical romance.

Sebenarnya duluuuuu sekali udah pernah baca Novel ini, ini baca ulang karena sebenarnya awalnya ga ngeh udh pernah baca. Setelah bab pertama baru rasanya cerita ini cukup familiar. 😁😁😁

Lord Somerton aka Anthony pada ultahnya yg ke 18 dipaksa temannya ke rumah bordil. Alangkah kagetnya dia ketika dia mengetahui bahwa pemilik rumah bordil tsb, Lady Whitely adalah ibu kandungnya. Ibu yg dia percayai telah meninggal. Anthony yg shock kemudian pergi, dan akhirnya berakhir di depan tangga gereja bersama seorang gadis penjual jeruk yang tak lain adalah Anne Smith yg nantinya berganti nama menjadi Victoria Seaton.
10 tahun berselang, Anthony mencari keberadaan Anne aja Victoria karena dia tidak bisa melupakan pengalaman pertamanya. Dia bahkan sampai meminta bantuan Sophie Reynard, sang cenayang sekaligus makcomblang.
Pertemuan kembali Victoria dan Anthony tidak bisa dibilang menyenangkan. Karena saat itu Victoria malah mencuri dari Anthony. Ketika Anthony mengetahui hal itu, Anthony kemudian memaksa Victoria untuk berpura-pura menjadi kekasih gelapnya dalam satu misi, balasan setimpal supaya Anthony tidak memberitahukan kepada teman2 Victoria bahwa ia adalah seorang pencopet.
Singkat cerita, misi mereka berlangsung sukses. Anthony dan Victoria juga kemudian tidak bs menolak pesona masing2.
Hingga penjahatnya mengikuti mereka kembali ke London dan menculik Victoria. Untunglah Anthony berhasil menyelamatkan Victoria dan menembak mati penjahat itu.
Well, cerita ga berhenti di sana. Adalagi rahasia2 yg akhirnya terkuak. Rahasia yg kemudian benar menjadi skandal musim ini..

Padahal udah penasaran bingit sama kisahnya Somerton, tapi mood jadi down gara-gara terjemahannya yang kurang oke. Bener-bener bikin ilfil.
Pas pesta di rumah Lady Farleigh lumayan membosankan, pas ngintai+nunggu Hardy beraksi ituh. Apa karena ada selipan cerita mata-mata alias spy nih, jadi boring part yang di pedesaan itu (dari dulu sayah gak pernah cocok sama cerita ala spy di genre historical romance).
Tapi lumayan seru pas Victoria dihajar sama Hardy cs. Jadi pas heroine-nya disiksa, hero-nya gak langsung nongol nolongin gitu. Tapi malah seru n bikin tegang.

“Victoria and Somerton,” Elizabeth whispered with a grin. “Do you think he loves her?”
“Did you not see the fierce look on his face?” Avis replied. “That is a rake in love.”
Oh my God! I know without doubt, that this is the best among Kelley's books and one of the best HR novels that I've read so far. Well, I suspected in the book 3, it would be Victoria since Sophie is Anthony's sister. I really adore the hero and their story is so beautiful. I wouldn't really expect Anthony would be that innocent even when he was eighteen years old. It really makes me sad to witness such good boy turn to a hardened man but ofcourse, he's really a good man in truth. Her being his first and vice versa is so sweet. And it looks they would also be each other's last. The addition of threat to the Prince Regent's life and all the things that comes with it are plus to the story. It shows that even during that time, people always want to have more than what they already have, same as now. And the long agony of waiting of her survival is intense I wanted to cry if my mother is not seating beside me while I'm reading. I'm more than glad he had already achieve his own happiness and every matters regarding his family are now settled. He deserves that more than anyone. I really loved this man even if I know he's a creation of imagination. It all felt real. And I love every bits that comprises the whole story. A really really great, beautiful story from Kelley.
And my bet is still on Nicholas and Sophie. Next to his brother, I really want to see her happy. She have done so much to make her friends happy and I think Nicholas is the man. And I really want to more about this man and her daughter. I really hope it would come to that.

Very good story and characters with unexpected twists and turns. Anthony,Viscount Somerton, and Victoria Seaton,aka Anne Smith go to a house party with her pretending to be his mistress. He is on a mission to recover a message indicating the plot to kill Prinny. Victoria and Anthony knew each other ten years before when Anthony thinks he raped her. He had just discovered his “ dead” mother runs a brothel. He has agreed to pay Victoria to be his pretend mistress, but both are drawn to the other. There are mistaken identities, kidnapping, killing, and love in this entertaining story.

Giving this a 4, even though I loathed the MMC for most of the story. His jerky attitude and focus on “becoming respectable” was annoying at best. I enjoyed the angst, the plot twists, and the interconnected stories from the other characters. While you can absolutely read this as a stand alone, I think I would have had a better appreciation for it if I had read the others in the series

Akhirnya saya memutuskan membaca Scandal of The Season, saking ngebetnya saya untuk menelusuri kisah percintaan Somerton, tokoh favorit saya dari seri The Spinster Club. Sejak awal, Somerton selalu hadir dalam kisah-kisah sebelumnya sebagai agen alias tangan kanan Sophie dalam mencomblangkan para anggota klub perawan tua. Somerton dibalik sikapnya yang kelihatan bajingan dan seenak pantatnya sendiri itu, pastilah hero yang paling potensial di antara hero lainnya.
Dan untungnya harapan saya terwujud. Novel Scandal of The Season bukan saja menghadirkan hero idaman saya, tapi juga heroine yang luar biasa dan bikin saya takjub. Di novel sebelumnya, saya sama sekali nggak tertarik ataupun terkesan pada Victoria, dia seolah hanya pelengkap dalam kelompok kecil itu. Namun ternyata Victoria pun sama cerdiknya dengan Somerton. Kesan yang saya tangkap selama ini runtuh seketika saat mengetahui profesi Victoria sebenarnya. Victoria merupakan pencopet yang canggih, yang beberapa kali membuat Somerton harus mengakui kelihaiannya.
Tentunya seru banget mengikuti kisah cinta antara mata-mata kerajaan dan seorang pencopet. Sungguh perpaduan yang menarik dan membuat jalinan cerita ini makin mengasyikkan.
Buku keempat dari seri The Spinster Club ini menggunakan sudut pandang orang ketiga, dengan fokus utamanya bergantian antara Somerton dan Victoria. Alurnya mengalir maju dengan setting tahun 1807 pada awalnya, ketika saya dibawa ke tahun yang krusial bagi Somerton, Anne Smith dan Lady Whitely. Kemudian di bab selanjutnya, setting telah maju ke tahun 1817, tepat sepuluh tahun dan menjadi waktu yang tepat bagi Sophie untuk menjodohkan Somerton dan Victoria.
Novel ini pun berbeda dengan novel sebelumnya dari seri The Spinster Club. Betapa tidak, Scandal of The Season menyajikan misteri akan latar belakang kedua karakter utamanya di samping petualangan mereka dalam menjalankan misi melindungi prinny. Jadi, novel ini bukan hanya kisah cinta berbau skandal saja, tapi juga memberi kisah usaha Somerton dan Victoria dalam menyelidiki dan menuntaskan misi mereka. Kisah yang seru dan mendebarkan.
Namun karena saya sebelumnya sudah membaca buku kelimanya, asal-usul dan latar belakang keluarga Somerton sudah nggak mengagetkan saya lagi. Hahaha...
Saya suka dengan interaksi antara Somerton dan Victoria. Dialog yang mereka lemparkan satu sama lain begitu hidup dan intens. Chemistry di antara mereka berdua saya rasa merupakan chemistry terbaik jika dibandingkan dengan tokoh di novel yang lain dalam seri yang sama ini. Apalagi ketika tiba di saat sudut pandang terfokus pada Somerton, duuuh bikin klepek-klepek deh ungkapan perasaan dan penderitaan hatinya.
Cara Somerton cemburu pada Nicholas dan Hardy itu manis banget. Yaaah... ini kan dunia novel ya, jadi tokoh utamanya gampang cemburuan sih bebas aja. Tapi kalau di dunia nyata, cowok cemburuan mah tinggalin aja. Jangan diberi kesempatan untuk berbaikan. Wkwk~
Saya suka cover versi terjemahan ini. Bisa dibilang saya jatuh cinta pada cover novel historical fiction dari penerbit Elex Media Komputindo, karena selalu menampilkan gaun-gaun yang indah dengan warna yang cerah. Sayangnya untuk penerjemahannya masih kurang bagus dan banyak sekali typo dalam novel ini.
Overall, saya suka banget dengan Scandal of The Season. Sebuah kisah dengan karakter tokoh yang menarik dan beda dari yang lain. Seorang hero yang terluka hatinya, seorang heroine yang badass-nya minta ampun, dan sebuah konflik berbahaya yang berpotensi menyatukan mereka. Sungguh kisah yang luar biasa manis dan romantis.

Scandalous secrets, intrigue, forgiveness, and desire all come together in the lovely Scandal of the Season. I admit, for the first half of the book I was somewhat concerned with how Christie Kelley would bring Victoria and Anthony together. Both have been so wounded by the past that the pain of their emotional scars threatens to overwhelm the story, but in a way that frustrated me as a reader, rather than made me empathize with them. The first half of Scandal of the Season contains quite a bit of one step forward, two steps back. However, stick with Scandal of the Season because the second half of the book is vastly more entertaining. The real emotional connection between Anthony and Victoria develops, not to mention the element of danger from Anthony’s mission finally becomes real. The second half of Scandal of the Season zipped along and captured my attention one hundred percent. The outcome of the story may be somewhat predictable, but there’s comfort in the resolution all the same.
Scandal of the Season can be read as a standalone, but the heroes and heroines of Ms. Kelley’s previous novels all appear. I will say, having not read Ms. Kelley’s books before, that I definitely want to read Victoria’s friends’ stories (Every Night I’m Yours, Every Time We Kiss, and Something Scandalous). In addition, Ms. Kelley finishes Scandal of the Season with a delightful tease for Victoria’s only unmarried friend – Anthony’s half-sister, the renowned mystic and matchmaker Sophie.
While Victoria and Anthony didn’t knock me off my feet, Scandal of the Season was still a solidly entertaining read. The secondary characters captivated me more than Scandal of the Season’s protagonists, which may not be a wonderful thing, but I was still pleased by it, for I now have three more books (and a fourth if, as I hope, Ms. Kelley writes Sophie’s story) that I am looking forward to reading.

Scandalous secrets, intrigue, forgiveness, and desire all come together in the lovely Scandal of the Season. I admit, for the first half of the book I was somewhat concerned with how Christie Kelley would bring Victoria and Anthony together. Both have been so wounded by the past that the pain of their emotional scars threatens to overwhelm the story, but in a way that frustrated me as a reader, rather than made me empathize with them. The first half of Scandal of the Season contains quite a bit of one step forward, two steps back. However, stick with Scandal of the Season because the second half of the book is vastly more entertaining. The real emotional connection between Anthony and Victoria develops, not to mention the element of danger from Anthony’s mission finally becomes real. The second half of Scandal of the Season zipped along and captured my attention one hundred percent. The outcome of the story may be somewhat predictable, but there’s comfort in the resolution all the same.

This book sparkles like diamonds and dazzles like rubies
Are we able to recover from the traumatic, life altering decisions our parents make when we are young? Do these choices make you rise to the challenge to be better than expected or close off your heart and only feel the winter cold surrounding us? Do all bad things happen in December making it the worst month of the year?
Lord Anthony Westfield, Viscount Somerset had his entire existence shaken at the age of 18 when he discovered secrets his parents thought long buried. The destruction to his life their choices created once discovered set off a night of drunken discourse and an encounter with the beautiful street urchin Victoria. While this liaison between Anthony and Victoria seemed tragic to him it was magical to her and both moved on with their lives neither forgot the other. When they meet again 10 years later Anthony tries to apologize for his misdeeds only to discover Victoria has a secret as well and one as equally damaging as his. Always a man to manipulate a good situation Anthony proposes an arrangement to have Victoria pretend to be his mistress so that he can conduct government business under the rouse of Victoria as his mistress. He knows he is drawing her into a dangerous situation but reconciles this fact with the one that there will be a monetary gain for her and the orphans she raises. But he wonders is that the only reason he wants her next to him every night or could there be something else drawing him to her?
Once they are secured at the house party in the country Anthony begins to spin a long list of lies that Victoria goes along with and her natural curiosity draws her into this very dangerous game. She has many hidden talents but Anthony still has issues with trust and neither of them really wants to reveal their past transgressions or what it is that has turned them into such cynical and distant individuals.
Yet as the nights grow colder and the bed they share seems to grow smaller Anthony and Victoria know that the passion is real, the temptation too much to resist and the feelings they have for one another deep enough to overcome whatever secrets each is holding back from the other. But can a titled man allow himself to love and live out his days with a woman of common means – that is a question Anthony must answer and the quicker the better as the mission is coming to a fast conclusion and Victoria may be gone when it is over. So maybe something good does happen during the Christmas Season after all.
This could have been a sad story of youthful tragedies and how they ruin you. But instead Ms. Kelley writes about finding love and the magic that brings into your life. Both Anthony and Victoria have depth in their individual characters to carry the story alone but once combined they are dynamic and you are exploding with anticipation about what is coming in the next chapter. The addition of secondary characters from the prior books is always a favorite of mine as I am a reader curious about what happens after the story ends and now I know!

Dari buku 1 gw ude penasaran sama si Lord Anthony, Viscount Somerton, lebih penasaran lagi pas di ending buku 3 kalau ternyata Somerton yg nyebelin itu kakaknya Sophie XD
Baca sampe kelar dr jam 8-2 pagi ehehehehe.. kaga bisa berenti, dan tau2 kelar gitu aja :D
Dari buku 1, Somerton sll mbantuin Sophie njodoh2in temen2nya dr klub buku, dan ternyata karena Sophie menjanjikan "satu" nama wanita dr masa lalu nya si Antony
"Anne Smith" itu nama yg di kasih Sophie ke Somerton di awal buku ini, dan tak laen tak bukan ya si Victoria salah satu member klub buku Sophie.

Kembali ke masa 10th yg lalu, Somerton mempunyai kepribadian yg sangat berbeda dari Somerton yg sekarang, baik hati, memegang teguh prinsip dan kehormatan (hallah), hingga pada ultah nya yg ke 18
Nicholas (hero buku 5) ngajakin Anthony buat ke rumah pelacuran, itung2 sebagai hadiah ultah deh.. memperkenalkan kenikmatan dunia kata Nicholas.
Saat itu Anthony diem2 suka bertukar senyum sama gadis penjual jeruk, tp yah.. die calon earl, ga mungkin lah die memperhatikan seorang gadis penjual jeruk secara seksama, apalagi menaruh harapan bla bla bla
Nah, pas di bawa ke rumah pelacuran itulah Anthony tau bahwa Ibunya ternyata masih hidup, dan ayahnya selama ini berbohong banyak hal padanya.
18th, frustasi, kaget, setengah teler dan ujan deres.. pas lagi neduh itulah Anthony ketemu sama si gadis penjual jeruk itu dan.. yup mereka uhuk2 di tangga (hedeh), die ngerasanya si nge-rape hmpfh
dan selama 10th itu, Anthony selalu ngerasa bersalah sama si gadis penjual jeruk, makanya die minta bantuin sophie buat nyari nama tu cewe
Victoria Seaton, mengelola rumah panti asuhan dan kekurangan dana, meski die selalu mendapat bantuan dari pemilik rumah pelacuran di sebelah nya, tetapi die selalu berusaha mencukupi kebutuhan anak2 nya dgn caranya sendiri, yup.. mencopet.
Nasib sialnya dimulai ketika die mencopet kalung dari saku Lord Somerton, dan ternyata kalung itu mempunyai tanda keluarga keluarga jd kaga mungkin dong dijual kr pasti bakalan ketauan.
Oh ya, Victoria bukanlah Victoria, die mendapatkan nama serta identitas baru setelah membantu seorang Lady (runyam banget ni masalah keluarga nya). Die adalah Anne Smith, yatim piatu yg menghidupi dirinya sendiri

Anthony yg kemudian tau kl Anne adalah Victoria dan nganggep Victoria pasti benci banget sama die kr ude ngambil keuntungan 10th lalu, belum lagi kesalahpahaman yg runyam (gw bingung ngejelasinnya kr pasti spoiler ntar.. *ini jg ude spoil si), blm lagi masalah kudeta dan pembunuhan calon raja

Somerton mendapatkan nama seorang wanita dari Sophie, cenayang sekaligus matchmaker sekaligus salah satu angota Spinster Club. Ternyata nama itu adalah nama gadis yang dicari-cari oleh Somerton selama 10 tahun. Gadis yang bernama Anne Smith.
Flashback 10 tahun yg lalu, Anthony Somerton baru saja merayakan ulang tahunnya yang ke 18. Nicholas dan Trey, kawannya, mengajaknya pergi ke brothel untuk merasakan pengalaman pertamanya dengan seorang wanita. Bukannya dapat hiburan dari wanita, dia malah menemukan ibunya, Lady Whitely yang dikiranya telah meninggal adalah pemilik brothel tersebut. Somerton pergi dalam keadaan mabuk. Di tangga dekat gereja, dia bertemu dengan seorang gadis penjual jeruk yang sudah beberapa waktu lamanya ditaksir oleh Somerton. Di tangga itu, Somerton mengambil keperawanan si gadis. Sepuluh tahun lamanya, Somerton hidup dalam perasaan bersalah karena menganggap dirinya telah memperkosa gadis tersebut. Untuk itu dia meminta bantuan Sophie untuk menemukan gadis itu. Ohya, ternyata Somerton dan Sophie itu saudara tiri.
Victoria Seaton (a.k.a Anne Smith) tinggal di sebelah brothel milik Lady Whitely. Dia mengasuh beberapa anak yatim piatu yang ditinggalkan oleh wanita yang hamil di luar pernikahan. Hidupnya selama ini sangat menyedihkan, dia bahkan kadang mencopet untuk kelangsungan hidupnya. Teman2nya di Spinster Club tidak ada yang tahu soal itu. Suatu hari, di acara Lady Selby, Victoria mencopet sebuah kalung dari Somerton. Ketika Somerton tahu siapa yang mengambil kalung miliknya, dia membuat perhitungan dengan Victoria. Terutama setelah dia tahu Victoria adalah Anne yang dicarinya selama ini.
Somerton sendiri ternyata sering bekerja pada pemerintah sebagai agen rahasia. Kali ini tugasnya mencari tahu sesuatu hal yang berkaitan dengan rencana pembunuhan pangeran kerajaan. Untuk itu dia harus menghadiri sebuah pesta natal, dan dia membutuhkan mistress sebagai pendamping. Dia pun meminta Victoria berpura-pura sebagai mistress, dan memberi sejumlah uang sebagai imbalan, serta tidak memperpanjang kasus pencurian kalung tadi. Victoria setuju.
Baik Victoria maupun Somerton sebenarnya telah saling menyukai sejak 10 tahun yang lalu. Victoria sendir tidak menganggap Somerton pernah memperkosanya, karena secara sadar dia memang ingin menyerahkan dirinya pertama kali untuk Somerton. Kali ini dengan berpura2 menjadi mistress, sekali lagi dia berdekatan dengan Somerton. Meski awalnya sama2 gengsi dan keras kepala, akhirnya keduanya tidak bisa menahan passion yang ada di antara mereka.
Menariknya, Victoria jadi terlibat dalam kasus yang sedang dikerjakan oleh Somerton. Kasus yang akhirnya membuat Victoria hampir kehilangan nyawanya. Selain itu, konflik keluarga Somerton punya kisah tersendiri yang menarik untuk diikuti.

Although this was book 4 in a series, I still took a chance on it as I haven't read the first three. I found that although knowing other characters may have enriched the story more, I was still able to follow along and could read the book as a stand alone.
There was a lot going on in this book! It starts 10 years previously when Anthony Westfield, Viscount Somerton, learns that his mother, whom he believed was dead, had actually left his father and ended up owning a brothel. Distraught and more than drunk, he ends up with a street girl whom he had previously flirted with and believes that he raped her.
Wanting to make amends, he has spent 10 years hoping to find her. Meanwhile, he has taken to spying as a way to escape. He has one last mission to achieve and thinks he may need some help. That help comes in the form of Victoria Seaton. As a friend of his half sister, Victoria, who with help started her life over from street girl to running a home for unwanted children, has to find a way sometimes to make ends meet. When she pickpockets a necklace from Somerton, he finds her. From his half sister he learns that she is the girl from so long ago.
He comes up with a plan. He takes her with him to a country party to act as his mistress to help him get in and watch a possible traitor to the country. In return, he will give her a generous amount of money and will not turn her over to the authorities for pick-pocketing.
The more time they spend together, the more they speak of their lives and the connection that they had 10 years ago, still smoldering, begins to light once again. They both know that nothing can come of their feelings. When the job is over, they will go their separate ways.
Secrets always have a way of coming out and little to they realize how far twisted together their lives truly are. In the end though, their feelings keep them strong and the warmth of the Christmas season prevails.
I did have some trouble with this book keeping my attention towards the end. It dragged a little, even when all the secrets were revealed. Also, the main reason I read this book was because I wanted a CHRISTMAS romance and although they were at the house party to celebrate Christmas, traditions of Christmas didn't factor very much into this book.

Ah ceritanya benar-benar skandal! bener-bener skandal, bukan suatu konflik yang diceritakan akan menjadi skandal namun konfliknya tidak begitu 'wah'. berbeda dengan yang ini, walau tidak diceritakan secara rinci bagaimana dampak skandal itu terhadap keluarga mereka (walau mereka memang tidak peduli). Yang aku bingung dari cerita akhirnya itu
Dan aku penasaran dengan cerita Sophie (yang pasti akan dengan Nicholas, ya) uh, the cenayang (lol)!

This is the 4th book in the Spinster Club Series. What a great book. Maybe my favorite, I know I said that in my last review of the 3 book. haha. But this story was so good, it had mystery, murder, passion, sex and wonderful main characters. Just loved it. Totally recommend this book!
I listened to this book via audible as I read along and the narration is good as long as you listen on 1.25 speed otherwise its a bit to slow for my taste.

Christmas season reading.
I love the hidden child romance plot. I know that it isn't 'realistic' but my own uncle-in-law had a 18 year old boy knock on his door, yup, it was his 'secret' son, surprise! It can happen, it does happen and I love reading it play out in romance stories. Don't worry that wasn't a real spoiler, you have to read the story to find out what really happens.
Anthony 'Tony' falls in love with an orange seller on the street; Anne or 'Victoria' or 'the vicar's daughter' or 'the orphanage lady' or 'spinster's club member'. This must be the heroine with the most amount of aliases in all the books I've ever read. There was a lot of lies but for once, it was justified and fit neatly into the story like Russian dolls, one hiding another or one protecting another. I liked the story and there was just enough sexy scenes and action to keep me interested with out being gratuitous. **There is some mention of rape, but it is debatable and the H/h have a good discussion about it so be warned.
