The Forsaken are the ones that Heaven has swept under the carpet. Those who fail to chose a side, and those who chose the wrong one. Nathaniel is Forsaken, he has been for a very long time, and frankly, he is bored. So when he hears of another battle approaching, he decides it's time to chose a side. He messed up once, and now is the time to tip the scales and put an end to the millennia of boredom, by any morally questionable means necessary. Having fallen in with the wrong side, his only way out is to become an agent of the dark forces, and this means obeying the boss. So when the boss wants someone's soul, you give it to him, and you be thankful for the experience. What you do not do, under any circumstances, is fall in love with the target. Especially not when the target is Anna Stone, that is to say, me. I never believed in heaven, or hell or any of it. Perhaps you do, perhaps you don't, but I know that either way, the world you see is not real. Let me tell you about the world you think you know.
This is a really fun read that once you get into is hard to put down! There's a really intriguing, multi-generational mystery at the centre which you find yourself quite invested in and desperate to reach the conclusion of. Some of the vocab/description is fabulous too.
I was 100% down for the bad boy that is Nathaniel. He should come with a warning– like cigarettes; they might look cool but they are so bad for you.
The love story might happen a bit quickly for some, a staple of the YA genre, but it's sweet so we'll let it slide.
The beginning of the book is somewhat slow and confusing. There was a lot of unknown and the story didn't start pulling me in until I was about 35% through. Chapter 5 is where it started getting more interesting for me. There was a lot of information that was left out, but I have now come to an understanding that this was intentional on the author’s part so that the reader can identify with Anna and her confusion, and realize things at the same time she does. But, I felt like there was not enough in the story to build the attraction between Anna and Nathaniel. There’s just something missing there for me because it seemed like they were in love all of a sudden without much warning. I think perhaps the story could have been built up better leading to how these 2 felt the connection and attraction between them. I'm a hopeless romantic, so maybe I'm just looking for more romance or stronger connection between the two.
What I really like about this book is that it told the story from Anna's and Nathaniel's perspective. Too often nowadays, the first book is in the girl's perspective and then a sequel will be written in the guy's perspective. I liked that I got both POV in one reading and had the insight on what each one was thinking. I also liked the story altogether. It's very interesting and different, especially the history between Seth, Irene, and Nathaniel. It was definitely not what I expected. Angels, demons, nephilim...it was all very intriguing! Overall, I liked the book and would recommend it to others.
