A LITTLE ABOUT ME

As a child I loved to draw-but I also loved books, especially picture books. I still remember certain illustrations, covers and bindings from books that were read to me as a young girl.
I’ve lived in many places: I grew up in Wantagh on Long Island, N.Y., graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts and attended St. Lawrence University in upstate New York.

At the University of Wisconsin in Madison, I majored in fine art and learned how to design, print and bind handmade books. I also took courses in Children’s Literature. The combination of form and content in the picture book format fascinated me and after graduation I headed for NYC where I worked for 17 years in children’s book publishing as a designer and art director. But I didn’t begin to write until I had children of my own.

My books have been published in many countries and in many different languages. You can find my books in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Germany. Some of my books have been translated into German, French, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Tswana, Sesotho, and Zulu!

I now live with my family in Arizona. You can read more about me at my website: www.bghennessy.com

A simple (and fairly didactic) book that shows how each child changes the world around them. "When you were born, there was a new person for your family to love and care for." "Because of you, there is one more person who needs help and one more person who can help others." Ultimately, it shows that each one of us has a role in bringing peace to this world through our choices.

This book speaks to the power of people in two distinct ways. It speaks in pairs of lines that have similar themes but look at them from different points of view. So the world is better for having a new person to love and care for, but also the world is better because there is a new person who will love and care for others. This pairing happens throughout the book, strengthening the message that each person has value and impact in the world. The book ends with the breaking of the pattern where it is expanded to include the impact of people around the world helping and caring. “It is called peace.” And then the book turns it once again and tells the reader that peace starts with individuals and it may happen “because of you.”

This book is written with conviction that radiates throughout it. It also has a very strong format with the repetition of form. It reads aloud effortlessly, celebrating the impact that each of us can have. Nakata’s illustrations are quiet and sweet, a feeling that is helped by the small size of the book. They include children and families of different ethnicities making the message even more universal.

While this will be enjoyed by children, it would also make a great gift for adults. Appropriate for ages 4-6.

Each person’s potential to change the world for the better through acts of kindness is celebrated in this delightfully uplifting picture book from B.G. Hennessy and Hiroe Nakata.

Bright watercolor illustrations of round-faced characters have plenty of kid appeal and complement the text, but it is the benevolent message that gives the book its strength. Hennessy’s text is simple and brief but powerful enough to stand alone as a positive message for ages 3 to 93. "Because of You" should find a spot in every elementary library and character education curriculum.

A book that all parents should read to their children. This book is simply amamzing. It shows children that they are loved and that they do have a purpose, even when they have rough days. I recommend this to all ages. This book is great for bonding and just saying "I love you". Can be kept in a classroom library and used as a read aloud for the beginning of the year.

An easy read about how kindness and unselfishness can change the world, because of you. I read this book to a 2nd grade class with hopes it would remind them to be kind to one another and to help each other with when they are able to. Love Love Love this book.I would read this book to all ages.

A feel good story that should be read by all parents to their children. This can also be utilized in just about any classroom to teach friendship and tolerance if utilized right.

Because of You is a book that teaches children positive possibilities that come with a person entering this world. It showcases different ethnicities in a positive light and how important it is to get along well with others. It also stresses the idea that one person could make a difference in the world in many ways. The sentences are simple and the colorful illustrations help aid in the reader receiving the book's positive message. This book would be great to read to a young child.

Casual, pretty illustrations. Sweet message at the beginning (you are someone that needs help and someone that can help others, someone to care for and someone who can care for others), but gets kind of PC toward the end about world peace. Simple writing. Few words per page.

I thought this book was the most precious thing. More people should read this book because it is such a cute reminder of how much one does mean in this huge world.

The book Because of You is absolutely one of the best children's we have read! Pima Elementary School recently gifted this book to one of our fabulous retiring 2nd grade teachers. This book tied in perfectly how thankful we are to have had her on campus for so many years making a dramatic impact with our students and staff as an extraordinary role model. Because of HER (Mrs. Lahiae-Beren), we have a pair of enormous shoes to fill as teachers, and hundreds of children she has prepared for the future. Thank you for creating such a wonderful book!
Celebrate with us Mrs. Lahiae-Beren's well deserved retirement and a beautiful reading of this book by Pima Elementary Schools staff.

I was impressed with the powerful message that is printed in this tiny picture book. Because of You is such an interesting phrase to highlight. It brings to mind the harsh tones and sweet melodies of the phrase. Harsh because it can be a phrase of anger or hurt. Sweet because it can be a phrase of love and honor. It's a two fold message - each person born into this world will create room for trouble and peace, hurt and help, love and kindness.

I would love to see this title updated for older readers and a bigger format to share in a group setting. As it is now, I would still share it in a small group and with any age if the theme is appropriate.
