Samantha Albright has escaped the town of New Hope but not the burning city that haunts her dreams. As Cole Porter drives her across the desert in search for answers about her past, a series of unfortunate events lands them in an underground bunker and under the watchful eye of an evil General Soto. Now, Sam must defy the odds again, find Cole, and escape before they are trapped forever.
In the underground city of Lost Angel, Sam and Cole learn that there are things much worse than the infected. There are the Halfways.
Matthew Cronan's love affair with writing developed during high school and the two have been happily involved since. His influences include Chuck Palahniuk, Stephen King, and Douglas Adams. He spends his days being a hospitality superhero and moonlights at night writing about them. He resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his amazing wife Lane, beautiful daughter Geneva Rose, and rescue-pup Sam.
This is the second book of the series and I have to say that I REALLY like where the author has gone with it. I am impressed with his character and world building and the main character has become a far cry from what she originally was - but it was done in a very cool way, with some mystery that I can't wait to learn more about in upcoming books. The characters that she has met in this book - and the continued adventure with Cole - is very interesting and again I just couldn't put the book down. I can't wait to read book #3.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an HONEST review.
The Halfways is the second book in The Infected series and my personal favorite so far. Sam's journey has led her to the underground city of Lost Angel. A town filled with Child prostitutes and the "royalty" who abuse them. After Sam meets a girl desperate to escape the life she's been forced into, Sam and her new ally Cole must find a way out of the city before it's too late.
I am really enjoying the direction the story seems to be heading. It's part The Hunger Games/ part Resident Evil. While I wouldn't go so far as to call Sam a Katniss she does have that characters sense of Justice. Also she can kick some serious ass, that definitely helps.
My only real gripe with the story is that I would still like to see more Zombies. We do meet some, so that's something but they feel much like an after thought compared to the corrupt Government element of the story.
Final Thoughts In the end I highly enjoyed The Halfways. In fact, I have no problem saying that it was far superior to The Infected on almost all counts (which is saying something since I liked The Infected). I really can't wait to see what direction the story takes in the next installment now that some pretty big revelations about Concordia have come to a head. It really makes me wonder how far reaching the deception goes. Worse could this all be one big Truman Show?? With that being said, I'll be rating The Halfways by Matthew Cronan ★★★★★.

Fast-paced, exciting, & tons of twists - the author packs every page of this novella with dark post-apocalyptic images that make it impossible to put this book down. Just make a decision that you will read it in one sitting!
I loved the further character development of Sam in this book. She has the ability to become another Katniss if she continues on the path that she is currently on. Very promising growth! And I appreciate the empathy she displays that makes her refuse to sit by and watch injustice (which started everything in the first book).
I am also looking forward to seeing what possible character development lies in the future for Nick. He can be an interesting addition...
