So, as people should know, I am a huge fan of Erin Hunter overall. Despite all of the flaws and whatnot, I enjoy the books enough that I still read them even to this day.

This book was not one that lived up to my expectations.

So the dogs, on their way to get back to the Wild Pack stumble upon the ocean. My first thought of this was when the warriors did this in Midnight and a small part of me was expecting Midnight to pop in and be all wise and stuff.

Of course, that did not happen.

In fact, besides a few things here and there...I did not understand why the ocean needed to be brought in at all. Yes, there was an important scene that happens when the characters are trapped in a cave and Lucky uses his medicine cat powerswit to help the others escape. Other than this one scene, the ocean was just...there. There was no real conflict involving it.

After the ocean, my FAVORITE dog of all returned. Alpha.

Now, there are evil characters I love to hate.

And then there are the ones that have no redeeming qualities whatsoever and they should burn in a pit.

Alpha falls into the second category.

He is the most unlikeable character ever. Throughout the books I have been wanting to reach through the pages and strangle him. The book does try to paint him as sympathetic during his Nope. I do not give a damn about that half-dog. Maybe I will check out the ebook about him and see if he is better in that but probably not. -_-

Anyway, my favorite part, that saved the book from being 2 stars for me, was Blade and the Fierce Dogs. Dang, the book got much more violent then and it reminded me of BloodClan from the Warriors books. I would actually like to see something come out from Blade's point of view. Despite her being a true villain, I liked her and her fierce attitude and whatnot.

Speaking of Blade, I just wanted to end the review with touching upon Storm. She will get annoying. She will annoy you...a lot. However, I feel like she redeemed herself slightly in the end which is nice I guess...

So yeah, hopefully the next book will be able to wrap everything up nicely. I don't know if the Erins are planning on making a second Survivors series but a part of me hopes not.

THE GOOD

Lucky: Poor Lucky just can't win. first he fails to save Fiery, then he decides it is time for Lick to have her naming ceremony and she becomes Storm. Then, Alpha renames Storm.... calling her Savage instead, when she refuses to renounce the name she has chosen. And tensions in the pack are high, especially with Sweet unsure about whether or not she should keep following Alpha.

Storm: I love this dog. She's stubborn, fierce, and determined - but that can often become a dangerous combination. Thankfully, Storm seems to finally have found who she really is.

Sweet, Moon, Mickey, Martha: I love these four dogs. They are great members of the pack.

THE BAD

Bella: I want Bella to just be killed off already. She has a bad attitude, and thinks she is better than everyone. She causes unnecessary conflict, then thinks she has the right to preach about working together.

Alpha: Wasn't sad to think he was dead, wasn't surprised when he turned traitor... WAS surprised that he would take on an omega role. huh. Still hate him, though.

DANGER! Unmarked Spoilers!

Turn Back!

Seriously!

OK. Here goes.

There is a new Erin Hunter who writes the Survivors series, one who was not involved in writing Warriors; you can tell. The lines are double-spaced, and yet, the Survivors books only average around 300. I also find the plot and pacing in Survivors to be lacking. Not much has really happened in this series when you consider the BIG picture; I mean, stuff happens but nothing epic. liked this series to begin with but now, not so much.

One thing that I dislike is that there isn't a true hero in these books. Main characters, yes; villains, yes. But no heroes. Storm is the only stand-out, following her heart, no matter the consequences. But Erin Hunter is too intent on making her seem dangerous and impulsive; not to mention (seemingly) trying to reinforce the stereotypes that real-life fierce dogs are born to be savage, when she could have inserted an admirable lesson that they aren't truly evil like everyone thinks (she does say something to that effect at the end, but doesn't press it). I admire Storm more than Lucky. She seems impulsive, but she is following her heart. She always tells Lucky what she is planning first, but he always dismisses her ideas and wonders why she runs off on her own.

Lucky is always thinking of himself and what he wants, that he refuses to lead the other dogs even when the whole group is pleading for his help. Having a leader to give orders doesn't mean you're mindless and needy like Lucky asserts, or that all leaders are evil; leadership is, firstly, a matter of organization; but, secondly, when you SHARE THE BELIEFS of your CHOSEN leader (as Lucky would have been the chosen leader, if he wasn't such a coward that he didn't want others relying on him), following orders are not a mindless act. Instead, you have consciously dedicated yourself to something you believe in, even if it's as simple as the protection of your friends, along with that leader who has promised to help you by being a commander; something Lucky won't commit to. Alpha is a bad leader, and thought only of himself; but leadership is not supposed to work that way, nor is it the way of most who put themselves in such a trusted role. Leadership isn't evil, and these poor dogs need a leader, a nice one.

Lucky could have done a lot of good as a leader, if he wasn't a coward, as I said. Lucky is a coward because he would never stand up to Alpha, no matter how much he publicly humiliated Lucky or Storm, no matter how much he beat on him or the others, even though he felt Alpha needed to be put in his place. If he wouldn't do it for himself, he should have done it for Storm, who was too little to defend herself. Yes, Alpha was bigger than Lucky, being half wolf, but Lucky stood up to Fierce Dogs and other enemies. He just didn't want to make a stand where it counted, for no particular reason at all.

I'm also getting tired of Bella and how smart she thinks she is. Her past role as leader involved secrets, unreasonable demands, and nearly killing her brother (because of some of those secrets and demands); in the end, it did lead to deaths, as well as branding Lucky an outsider (just for following Bella's plan), by a stupendous display of Bella's low IQ, Did anyone in Lucky's litter escape inheriting a devastating character flaw?! Because Lucky and Bella sure didn't.

I'm getting disappointed in this series because, 5 books in, Lucky still wants to be a Lone Dog, no matter how much he claims to love the others in the Pack. He's even in love, for Heaven's sake!! No more Lone Dog once that happens. He should have stepped up for the Pack by now, but only Storm has done that so far. It's well past the time that Lucky should be allowed to be torn two. He has spent the past five books in a pack. He's a Pack dog now.

An aside: This big, impending battle is called the Storm of Dogs. I don't think it's merely about a snow storm and dogs tussling. One of the Pack members is Storm ---> STORM of Dogs!!!! Whatever this big event is, Storm will be key, since I think this prophesied battle is named for her.

Star Rating: 5 stars

Note: This is the 5th book in the Survivors series so this will not be an in-depth review.

After trying to read a new author and hating it, I decided to go back to familiar territory and picked up book 5 in the Survivors series, The Endless Lake. This continues the story of Lucky and his new Pack as they struggle to find a place to call home in a world changed by natural disaster/environmental disaster. Whereas the last book focused on the argument of nature vs. nurture, this book focuses on what makes a good leader.

This idea is at the core of everything that happens in this book so it is the main thing that I will be talking about in this review. Within this series, there are many different examples of leaders that exist everywhere on the spectrum. The longest running example of a bad leader is Alpha, the wolf-dog who currently leads Lucky’s Pack. He is an aggressive, egotistical tyrant who refuses to like or appreciate anything that is out of his comfort zone. For instance, he hates Lucky, the former Lone Dog, the Leashed Dogs, and Storm, the former Fierce Dog, even though they are some of the main reasons why the Pack has survived for as long as it has. There is also Terror, a dog who suffers from mental illness and rules through fear and Blade, a dog who rules with violence. With all these bad leaders, you may be confused when I say that this book explores what makes a good leader. It deals with it because it showcases all of these bad leaders so flawlessly that when a great leader comes on the scene, they are very easy to identify and appreciate.

All in all, I love this series and what it is trying to teach through its fun, engaging stories. If you like animals, then you should really try this book and this series in general.

Another exciting chapter in the lives of the Wild Pack, leading up to the final book in the series. It still hasn't arrived, so I will have to wait -sigh- I do so love binge reading Erin Hunter books. This one deals with Lucky's dreams a little more, as Storm tries to find footing with her chosen pack. Sweet might finally be leaning towards Lucky, as I'd always hoped. There's a heap more, but I don't want to spoil it!

I do love the way these books are written, with whole cultures within different animal groups. They are always fast paced and there is always a sense of danger, perhaps because loved characters are killed, just as they would in the wild. Think back to being a kid, watching The Animals of Farthing wood. Then those voles and mice were strung up by the butcher bird, the newts got roasted in a fire, and the hedgehogs run over on the road. Hell, Bold collapsing outside the park only to die was one of my worst memories. You never know when your favorite dog might die, so you read on and hope!

A great series, I'm so glad I discovered this author. I'm always thankful, since it's a hard genre to find and get right. Four stars.

The Endless Lake didn't fail to amaze me! Follow along as Moon, Martha, Lucky, Bella, and Storm all venture along the endless lake to re-join their pack. In this book the pack struggles with the ocean tides, lack of prey, miles of sand, the Fierce-dog pack, and quarrels from within the Wild Dog Pack. Loyalties are split! Is Storm bad luck to the pack, or an asset? What are Alpha's real plans?

Best book yet! I'm already eager to jump into the next one! I ended up reading 70% of this book in one day I was so hooked.

You might like this book if you enjoy...
-Gorey battles
-Tension and suspense
-Adventures and traveling
-Talking animals
-Dogs

You might not like this book if...
-Blood and death disturb you too much

The Endless Lake was a good book. It was a action packed book. The main character Lucky had to lead his friends back to his pack after they went to save a fellow pack member from dying. The reached a lake that seemed to be endless which they didn't know was an ocean. The pack is being led by a very bad leader and when Lucky regroups with the pack, he is having second thoughts, and is secretly hating him behind his back. While, the pack settles in their new camp, another pack is after them, and when they find them they will merciless attack them until all of them are left dead. This book is a very creative story and I would recommend it to whoever wants a nice battle book.

I don't think this was my favorite book of the series. I'm not saying I don't like it it just was not my favorite of the series. I thought to many dogs died. I mean I was already sad when when my favorite character(Fiery) died in the last book and then they kill Spring to. I wasn't said when Alpha fell I was actually pretty happy but then I figure out he just went to the Fierce Dogs. My favorite character now that Fiery died would probably be Sweet. I'm glad that she's the new Alpha.

Solid three stars. This book was just okay.

The Endless Lake reads pretty much the same as all the ones before it: normal Erin Hunter writing, not exceptional, but it gets the job done. I don’t have much to say on how this book was written.

The plot was alright. I like that we don’t just timeskip back to the Pack, and the journeying dogs actually had to, you know, journey back to the others. Twitch leaving so soon in the beginning felt a little awkward, but it wasn’t bad. I like the Endless Lake as a setting; it’s definitely a nice change from just the forest. I think the overall plot of the Fierce Dogs wanting Storm back is a bit weak, but it wasn’t bad. Plot has to happen, so if the villains’ motivations are a little shaky, that’s fine. Not good, but fine. The climax, with Storm and the Trial of Rage, was entertaining enough, but also pretty predictable. I think that’s my main issue with this book: even when I first read it, there was nothing surprising. The stakes don’t even feel that high, because the only characters who die are side characters. I just hope next book has more death or tension than I remember, otherwise, this book sets it up for a pretty mid finale.

The characters are where this book really suffered.
Lucky was a fine main character again, but he definitely is losing whatever bits of uniqueness he may have had at the start of the series as a Lone Dog. I suppose since he’s the first Survivors POV character, I’ll say this is good development that he fades into the background of the other Pack dogs a bit as he grows more ingrained in Pack life. His romance with Sweet, though, is an absolute mess. Weren’t they arguing last book? Isn’t there a ton of conflict between them that both dogs just conveniently forget when they return? It felt very cheap to me, and their actual relationship is also very stereotypical.
Sweet herself is another character I don’t really care about. She’s fine. She the love interest, and she has no personality, but I do like that she gets to be Alpha in this book. It’s nice to see a reversal of gender roles, even if the character is a walking stereotype.
Bella was pretty okay. She was less annoying in this one, at least. I’m not opposed to her fighting Sweet for the leadership position, especially now that we have Storm as a main female character too, but it was still annoying that the original main two female characters have to be rivals.
Alpha “dying” did nothing for me. He was a horribly written character who should have stayed dead. I have to reread his novella to see if him joining the Fierce Dogs makes any sense at all, but honestly, it felt really cheap to me. I’m disappointed in this character once again.
Storm was. . . Kind of annoying. Again, she’s obviously not evil. Does anyone, at any point in this series, think she is? I’m not against her acting reckless occasionally, but the whole ‘Will she, won’t she (be evil)’ feels very cheap to me.
The side characters were all passable, with none being standouts as usual. Survivors at this point is just an okay series, but it’s really nothing special, especially when I know how much stronger the characters can be.

Blade and the Fierce Dogs are functional villains, for sure, but I wish they had more going for them. They’re just. . . A bunch of nameless faces that bite a lot, and once in a blue moon tangentially cause someone’s death. Blade is the most intimidating, sure, as she should be, but even she doesn’t really feel that scary, since she’s never killed anyone on the page; just allegedly when Lucky passed the Dog Garden that one time.
Fang is also a little disappointing to me; there could be a lot to his character, but just when the story seems like it’s setting him up to have layers, he’s right back to just being evil. I actually wouldn’t have minded a novella of his perspective; I think that would help the believability of his actions.

Overall, not a bad book, just not a good one either. The Endless Lake is very much mid; hopefully Storm of Dogs will be better.

The Endless lake is a book out of the series SURVIVORS by Erin Hunter, it is book number five, the lexile level is a 700L. The book is about dogs that have to try and survive in packs after a big storm called the Big Growl, a very strong earthquake. They have to fight the weather because it is going into winter, but they also have to fight the fierce dogs, they are a pack of wild dogs that are very strong. When their alpha dies they struggle not to fight with each other, they also are trying to save their baby pup from the fierce dogs.
They are wild dogs so they have to fight the weather so that shapes the dogs by making them stronger and tougher. The setting also affects the characters because they don’t have nice warm homes they have to find food and shelter. Lucky the main dog has dreams about the “Storm of Dogs” a big fight that will kill a lot of dogs during the fight.
I really like the book, but it did get kind of confusing at times. The dogs call different things different than us. Like they call humans, longpaws, and cats they call sharpclaws. So at times it did get confusing figuring stuff out and what it was. It was also really unpredictable, you didn’t know what was going to happen next. So overall it was a really good book and I would recommend it to other people looking for a good dog book.

Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be more drama in the series, so much more happened! When returning from the failed mission to rescue Fiery, Lucky and the small group comprised of Bella, Moon, Martha, and Storm get lost near a seemingly endless lake of salt that is probably an ocean. Near this endless lake is a deserted longpaw settlement in addition to the new Fierce Dogs camp. A battle ensues and Lucky's group barely manages to escape due to a distraction from Fang and the Pack stumbling on a cave that leads upwards. Upon returning to the Pack due to deliberate scent marks left by Sweet and Sunshine, Alpha is mortified that Storm has decided to name herself in his absence. The half-wolf gives Storm an "official" ceremony in front of the entire Pack and dubs her "Savage". (Uh, how rude can you be?) This name bites Alpha later as he is drowning and asks "Savage"/Storm for help and she ignores him. Spring also gets washed away, despite Martha's efforts to save the amazing dog! She was one of my favorites. :( Oh, and Twitch becomes Alpha of Terror's Pack, yay!

The Endless Lake is a buildup for the final battle in the next book. It was better than some of the previous books, but it still has all of the issues that I have had problems with. The treatment of the Fierce dogs is still present. Alpha grows old as antagonist very quickly and he is quite annoying having been present as an antagonist for all but the first book. Survivors also has issues with trying to be similar to Warriors, but without the heart behind it. It also fails at developing certain concepts that become important to the story. These concepts just feel thrown in in attempts to make it more interesting, instead of developing the world or spirituality of the dogs overtime.

My favorite part of this book was when Sweet became alpha of the pack and Lucky became Beta. I did not at all expect Alpha to almost die, and then get put into the Fierce Dogs pack as Omega. I was hoping that another dog would become Alpha by challenging him and winning, so he could go back to his previous name; I'm curious about what his previous name is. My least favorite part was when the Fierce Dogs caught and bullied Storm trying to make her have to join their pack by proving how savage she was. Luckily, they failed. Storm is one of my favorite characters.

I hated it the Half-Wolf a lot but was happy when he drowned, but was shocked when he became omega for the Fierce Dogs. It was a really good book and left a lot of surprises for me!!! Can’t wait for the next one!!! I was also happy when Sweet became Alpha and she and Lucky had four pups named Fluff, Tumble, Tiny, and Nibble. I’m so happy when Bella and Arrow had puppies too. And Breeze tries to kill the pups, and kills Whisper, sabotages Storm and, Kills Bruno. But Storm gets kicked out of the pack and is forced to live on her own. It was sad but happy at the same time.

I really liked this book and how one of the dogs betrayed the pack it was such a emotional rollercoaster first your sad then your angry then happy it’s just so good

Only bad think is that I want Bella to die in a ditch she’s so bad always starts conflict then says she wants to be Alfa since she thinks she’s better than everyone else she’s just sooo annoying
