Dana Carpender started her writing career as a self-published author. In 1995, after years of creative low fat cooking featuring whole grains and other “healthy” carbohydrates, and despite five step aerobics classes per week, she found herself a size 20, and gaining! Worse, her blood pressure was rising, and she was left dragging by energy swings. Dropping carbs long before it was fashionable, Carpender lost 40 pounds with no hunger, achieved normal blood pressure and excellent blood lipids, and found herself with more energy in her forties than she’d had in her teens.
Carpender lives in Bloomington, Indiana with her husband, two dogs, and a cat, all of whom eschew junk food. When she’s not cooking, writing, or reading the latest nutrition research, she power-walks, read mystery novels, and is an enthusiastic Toastmaster, taking the occasional trophy.
Finished this in two days. It's a very short book on how to jump start weight-loss by going on a temporary, extremely low protein/low carb meal plan that's heavy on the fat. The author provides the science behind it, citing studies and her own personal experience. She provides easy recipes that are composed 80%-90% of fat. Too long in America we've accepted the idea that it's fat that makes us fat. Too many starchy carbs make us fat. Studies show that people gain weight on high carb/low fat diets. This book is very interesting reading in light of the obesity and diabetic epidemic in the USA. If you're a vegan, this book isn't for you.
Good background in the first few chapters provides an intro to what low carb, moderate protein, high fat lifestyle is all about. I first found Dana Carpender via her podcast and wanted to learn more. The recipe's in this book provide a picture of what this type diet or lifestyle would be like. I am interested in eating healthy and have learned it does not mean following the "food pyramid" recommendations.
I'm a Dana Carpender fan since 2009, having started my low carb journey with her "How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds".. I've used her "500 Low Carb Recipes" and its sequel as well. I've been aware of fat fasting, through Dr. Atkins' writings, but his version was pretty bland. Dana provides some interesting recipes to give variety and satiety to a short-term fat fast.
The most inspiring section in this book, however, is the case laid out for ketogenic diets in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease. This is an insidious disease that has laid waste to many in my family, and if eating a high-fat diet can help to protect me, well, sign me up.
I finished the book portion of this book. I plan on trying out the recipes in the coming days. From what I can see though, everything looks pretty good.
