Broken Wings

Rate this book
He lives to fly-until a jagged piece of flak changes his life forever. A tragic childhood has turned American Air Forces Colonel Rob Savage into an outwardly indifferent loner who is afraid to give his heart to anyone. RAF nurse Maggie McGrath has always dreamed of falling in love and settling down in a thatched cottage to raise a croftful of bairns, but the war has taken her far from Innisbraw, her tiny Scots island home. Hitler's bloody quest to conquer Europe seems far away when Rob and Maggie are sent to an infirmary on Innisbraw to begin his rehabilitation from disabling injuries. Yet they find themselves caught in a battle between Rob's past, God's plan, and the evil some islanders harbor in their souls. Which will triumph?

Dianne Price fell in love with writing at the age of five. Her father was a barnstorming pilot with a bi-plane and she was bitten early by the dreaded “flying bug.” She attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and met and married the man God had prepared for her—an aeronautical engineer. After their five children were in school, she burned the midnight oil and wrote three novels, all published by Zebra Press. When her husband died only three years after he retired, she visited the Outer Hebrides Isles of Scotland, where her husband’s clan (MacDonalds) and her own clan (Galbraiths) originated. Many yearly trips, gallons of tea, too little sleep, and a burst of insight birthed her Thistle Series.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Dianne, born in August 1933, lived joyfully despite dealing with terminal cancer and died in August 2013, a mere week before the release date for the first book of this series, Broken Wings. Everyone involved with the production of this book and the next five has been blessed beyond measure to have known Dianne and be a part of giving readers a chance to meet Rob and Maggie and visit the beautiful, fictional isle of Innisbraw.

In Broken Wings, American Air Forces Colonel Rob Savage has to learn how to walk again after his plane is shot down. He is sent to Innisbraw, a tiny island in Scotland, with Scottish RAF nurse Maggie McGrath...and along the way they fall in love! It was an engaging WWII love story, and had likeable characters with big hearts. I liked the touch of suspense and the story moved very smoothly.

There were two things that bugged me though: 1) everyone seemed to be very pushy when it came to Rob deciding about moving to Innisbraw, but not about the possibility of Maggie moving to America, and 2) nurses were in short supply during the war, so it seemed unlikely to me that Maggie would be able to have several months' leave to take care of one patient in Scotland. But maybe I'm being nitpicky, since the latter point was essential to the story.

A great WWII read! 3.5 stars.

The Brigadoon-like isle of Innesbraw, Scotland, wounded hero, a nurse who can help heal his body, and the God who can heal his heart. Plus all the charm of a WWII novel. But a bitter woman's decade-old grudge could tear them--and the island apart.

This book grabbed me from the get-go.

I won this book in a giveaway from the "Fiction Hero Features" blog, and now I want to buy the rest of the series! So glad to know there are four more books! A heart-gripping story, beautifully told.

“The truth is always fitting.”

In Dianne Price’s Broken Wings, Rob Savage faces a new truth. A disabling injury might have destroyed his dreams of flying in the American Air Forces. As he struggles to find new meaning to life now that his movements are restricted, he discovers his largest source of encouragement might be taken from him. Will his muscles and nerves regenerate, allowing him to walk once more? Or will he be permanently confined to a wheelchair—and unable to continue serving his country? Will he discover that the truth of God’s love can conquer the struggles he faces? Or will he give up hope when his past revives hurts he thought he’d long since buried?

Broken Wings is the first of a six book series written by the late Dianne Price. It’s written with beautiful prose and a generous heart. Though it contains more than the customary two or three points of view, the story unfolds seamlessly and keeps the reader hooked chapter after chapter. Often leaving me hanging right when I needed to stop reading and get chores done, Broken Wings sneaked into my heart and left me wanting more. I can hardly wait until the next book in the Thistle Series comes out!

Though the folks at Ashberry Lane burned the midnight oil to get Broken Wings published as quickly as possible, Dianne Price died from terminal cancer a week before its release date. She loved writing and made several yearly trips to the Outer Hebrides Isles of Scotland, where both her husband’s clan (MacDonalds) and her own (Galbraiths) originated. Those trips inspired the fictional island of Innisbraw, first introduced in Broken Wings, and her Thistle Series. I hope you take the time to read the first book in this series. It’s sure to whet your appetite for a little Scottish culture and the adventures of Rob Savage and Maggie McGrath.

As a rule, I don’t do book reviews. I purchased the eBook version of Broken Wings because the setting is in England/Scotland during World War II, my favorite historical era. And because I was touched by the passing of the author before her book was published.

After reading this novel, I realized what a great talent romance readers have lost. Diane weaves a haunting tale of Maggie and Rob’s struggles to find love as Hitler’s Luftwaffe pours out its rage against the English people.

Maggie leaves the sheltering Scottish world of her surgeon father and travels to London to become a nurse. There she meets Rob suffering from a devastating war injury. The reader shares Maggie’s first love and her determination to see Rob returned to health. Healing not only from his physical wounds, but also from the hurts of his childhood.

Price seamlessly entwines the Gaelic language throughout the story adding extra depth and realism to her characters. Bottom line, it’s a great story and a stellar read. I’m looking forward to the next edition.

Culturally rich in the Scottish highland setting, vivid details of battles in the air, irresistible characters facing and overcoming their weaknesses – all these elements are present in this engaging story. The author, Dianne Price, passed away before she could hold the published copy of Broken Wings in her hands, but her writing leaves us an inspiring legacy.

Colonel Rob Savage with the American Air Forces and RAF nurse Maggie McGrath have more than the German offensive to concern them. The battles launched from the past and from home must be won as well. But first Maggie has to help Rob survive his serious injuries and face his long road to rehabilitation.

I especially liked the realism in the flying scenes and the fact I felt I was walking through the heather with the characters on the little Scottish isle. I'll be coming back for more in the Thistle series.

Broken Wings

This is such a beautiful story. I'm not sure if I've read any other Dianne Price books before however, I will be going to her book list and read each one!
Her characters are so real that you get invested in their story. The description of the island they are on is so vivid that it paints you a beautiful picture that you could visualize, or as in the book states it "mind pictures".
I'm a fan for life of Dianne Price!
