Victoria Hamilton is the bestselling author of several mystery series including the national bestselling Vintage Kitchen Mysteries and Merry Muffin Mysteries. She does, indeed, collect vintage kitchenware and bake muffins. She drinks tea and coffee on writing days, and wine other times. It doesn’t do to confuse days. A solitary being, she can be coaxed out of her writing cave for brownies and cat videos.

She started her writing life as Donna Lea Simpson, bestselling author of Regency Romances, paranormal historicals and historical mysteries, and still has a soft spot for the Regency period.

In fact her latest writing adventure is the new Regency-set historical mystery series - to be published by Midnight Ink - beginning in February 2019 with A Gentlewoman's Guide to Murder, featuring Miss Emmeline St. Germaine, a young lady who dares to defy society. She will fight for her right to live her own life, despite the dangers that presents. She has a dagger, and she's not afraid to use it.

If you Google ‘Victoria Hamilton’, you will find listed first a famous actress who starred as the Queen Mother in the Crown and as Charlotte Brontë in ‘In Search of the Brontës’. That’s not the Victoria who writes mysteries.

No, really, it’s not!

Good follow up to the first book... not my favorite series but a fair read. I think the author needs time to figure out who the main character wants to be, especially with a theme that may not apply to all readers. Vintage Kitchen items are cool, but unless there is a deep connection between the victim or killer, and to the main character, it's a little too disconnected. The setting is good, the characters are fun. Nothing completely stands out yet in this series and I'm not thirsty to read each new book yet. I will give another one a chance later in the year.

Bowled Over is the second installation in the 'Vintage Kitchen Mystery' Series. This cozy mystery series features Jaymie Leighton, a young woman who is a vintage cookware and cookbook collector. She has been accused of being an old soul in a young body.

After Jaymie had been estranged from her high school best friend Kathy Cooper in high school, they suddenly come face to face. Kathy is still angry and stand-offish, which bothers Jaymie more than she cares to admit. Personally, I felt there was way too much attention given to their dissolved relationship.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Stirring up trouble . . .

Vintage kitchenware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton has been estranged from her high school best friend Kathy Cooper since they were teenagers, but she never knew what turned Kathy against her. After fireworks at a Fourth of July picnic, Jaymie discovers the body of her former friend in the park. On the ground nearby is Jaymie’s own Depression-era glass bowl, broken in two.

With her fingerprints all over the bowl and troubled history with the victim, Jaymie suddenly finds herself at the top of the list of suspects. Did the killer intend to frame her for the murder? If so, she is ready to mix it up, because solving crimes is vintage Jaymie Leighton…

After a recent separation, she was currently living alone in the home that she and her sister shared ownership of, along with the companionship of her three=legged dog. The other citizens in the town still find Joel, Jaymie's ex, guilty for breaking her heart. In this volume, Jaymie becomes personally acquainted with Heidi, the new fiancee of her ex. And she actually discovers that she likes the girl!

There is a LOT of content regarding the vintage cookware, cookbooks, vintage furniture, and the dog. She does seem whether obsessed with it. Her sister complains that she has too much, objects to how much room it takes, and strongly encourages her to part with some of it. Yet, she is only a part-time resident in the home.

As is somewhat indicative of the formulism in a cozy mystery, there is semi triangular love interest created for the heroine. One man is a part-time resident who is rich and owns his own company. The other man is the local police detective, with whom Jaime finds her self intertwined with during a crime-solving situation.

This book is able to stand on its own, but if you read them in order, you will be more familiar with some of the characters and their development. Each story does include its own H.E.A., which is always a good way to conclude the adventure the reader invests their time and attention to, ultimately becoming better acquainted with the overall storyline in a personal way.

This was a clean and cozy mystery. I really liked it.

Would recommend!

Good second book in the series. This one takes place at the 4th of July. I like Jaymie and the cast of characters around her. I think I'd love to look at all her vintage kitchenware up close. Looking forward to the next book in the series. #readforkimberly

I really liked the first one of these....this one, not so much. Jaymie is a bit dull and boring in this one and seldom shows much backbone. It comes out every now & again, but not enough to keep her from disappearing into the woodwork, along with most of the other characters in this book, even though she's supposed to be the heroine. The previous book had a great deal more vintage kitchenware talk than this one, which is what drew me to the series in the first place. Not much of that this time around. I found myself skimming parts of this because of a bit of an overabundance of internal angst. I know I have the next one on order, but if it's not a step up from this one I won't read past that.

I enjoyed the first book in this series a little more than this one, but this one was okay. I’m not entirely sure whether or not I like Jaymie. She’s kind of a busy-body and not entirely likable, although she tries really hard to be everybody’s friend (which may be my issue with her). Too many times, she comes across as some raised with money who feels it is their job to save the less fortunate of the world with their benevolence. I do like her friends, and the town seems totally charming. The mystery itself was a good one, and the twists kept me guessing until the solution. I will probably go at least 1 more book into the series and see if Jaymie grows on me.

Stirring up trouble…

Vintage kitchenware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton and her high school friend Kathy Cooper have been at odds for years but Jaymie has no idea why. She decides it is time to find out what she did that makes Kathy hate her so much. She needs to confront her so they can put whatever happened behind them.

But when she finds Kathy dead after the 4th of July fireworks along with her Depression era glass bowl she realizes there will not be any reconciliation. With her fingerprints all over the bowl and their rocky past she is not surprised to be the prime suspect of her murder.

Did the killer frame her on purpose? If so, she is ready to mix it up, because solving crimes is vintage Jaymie Leighton…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I was “Bowled Over” by this marvelous mystery. This story had so many twists I almost got whiplash. So many secrets, so many suspects. I Loved It!

Jaymie has a huge heart and that always leads her right in the center of trouble. She needs to clear her name. With her many odd jobs she comes into contact with almost everyone in town. She has Valetta for backup, who knows the skinny on just about everyone in the area. Even Anna has info to help Jaymie find the killer. Jaymie just has to put all the clues together.

There’s also a bit of romance in this story but unfortunately Jaymie’s romantic path is a bit cloudy. Her sister Becca’s path is pretty clear yet again. Jaymie has given herself a six month deadline to decide how she feels about the men in her life. The next book should be very interesting!

Victoria Hamilton has dished up another fun and entertaining winner!

***Revised my rating from 2 to 1 stars for reason at bottom.

I appreciated how this story line gave more depth to Jaymie's character by showing the mean side to her behavior in high school. However, when it comes to the murder mystery itself...I felt that the murderer's motivation was telegraphed way too early in the story, the murder weapon still doesn't make sense to me, and the "disguise" featured in the story felt unnecessary and impractical.

And stop mentioning that she buys her Tetley tea in a Canadian grocery store! It's been available here in the states since I was a child. Buying it over the border doesn't give it any magical properties.

***Also, comparing the possibility of local residents accepting a lesbian couple to one of them suggesting that a man from Jamaica play an Indian Muslim man in the annual Queen's tea, because he is so tall and handsome, is insulting and leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Just dropped my rating by 1 star thinking about this single paragraph in the book.

Can you say more twists than a mountain road? That's what Bowled Over had. Everytime I thought I had it figured out, I decided someone else was the killer! It wasn't until almost the end of the book that I finally figured out the murderer, but I never saw what else came out in the story. This time one of Jaymie's exfriend is murdered and just when Jaymie wanted to find out why they were no longer friends. It's up to Jaymie not only to figure out what she had done, but also to keep her head off the chopping block. Once life finally left me alone, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. This is one of my favorite new series and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Bowled Over is the second book in the Vintage Kitchen Mystery series by Victoria Hamilton.

A great second book to this informative series. Not as much information on vintage kitchen items as the first book, but some to appeal to collectors of these items.

Jaymie Leighton is at the Emporium doing some shopping when she see her nemesis from high school, Kathy, giving Ella a hard time about Ella's running over Kathy's nephew with her wheelchair. Jaymie step in and Kathy then turns her anger on Jaymie. Jaymie has no idea why Kathy stopped liking her in high school, but would like to know, so that things can be put right.

Unfortunately at the 4th of July, after the fireworks, Jaymie finds Kathy's nephew unattended and soon finds Kathy's lifeless body. Kathy has been hit on the head with a Depression era bowl of Jaymie's. Luckly, Jaymie has an alibi. In addition Kathy has quite an extensive list of possible murderers.

Her sister, Kylie, whose son, Kathy is trying to adopt has a million dollar insurance policy on Kathy. Then there is the philandering husband who might want her out of the way. But then Johnny Stanko had had a heated argument with Kathy and it is known that he last had the bowl in his possession.

Of course Jaymie wants to help find the murderer, but she wants to help so that she can get closure for not settling he troubles with Kathy before. Jaymie and Daniel have come to an agreement in their possible relationship. We'll have to wait and see if Detective Christian has anything to say about it.

Looking forward to next book in this enjoyable series.

I guess this is the second book in this series, but you don't need to read the first one to easily understand this book. I don't find Jaymie or the other characters very engaging and I'm getting bored with Jaymie's back and forth between angst for her former friend Kathy and her quest to find the killer. I actually can understand not knowing for 15-16 years why your best friend turns her back on you, but to finally follow up on it after all that time and to mourn and weep for the former friend and what was lost? That was a bit forced for me.

So, at chapter 14 I think I'm giving up because the story and character just hasn't engaged me. Even the possible romantic triangle (quadrangle?)isn't enough to keep me reading.

This is the Kardashian of books. God I love this series because of how awful it is! I was actually rooting for the guy to kill her. It’s so bad that it is good!! She’s literally so into the era when women were raped/abused. She has no job but is shocked that people think she’s lazy. She has no cellphone because... I mean she’s the worst person, why would she have a phone? It’s hilarious. Oh! She’s a hoarder too! I laugh so hard when bad things happen to her. I can’t wait to laugh at her awful sister who married in a second. I bet she’s the type of person who won’t let gay people marry but has been divorced multiple times. This book solidifies all the horrible stereotypes of the Midwest. Do I recommend it? No, but I’ll keep rooting against it...forever. 😂

Jaymie loves vintage kitchenware. Jaymie took potato salad to the town picnic in a vintage depression glass bowl which someone used to kill Kathy Cooper, a long-time childhood friend who began feuding with her in high school for reasons unknown to Jaymie. Jaymie decides to help the local detective solve the case--since her bowl was the weapon. Since she's an amateur sleuth, you can expect her to get herself into trouble with her nosiness. The audio narration is a little too much on the "sweet" side for me. Still this is a fun series with lots of twists and turns. The solution was not immediately obvious and kept the reader guessing.

A good mystery with a bland protagonist

What I enjoyed:
* A good mystery that kept me guessing
* People actually got annoyed at Jaymie for asking questions, that is so rare in cozies where they are just happy to spill there biggest secrets.
* Quite a lot of secrets Jaymie managed to unravel (a lot by being in the wrong place at the right time). I'm surprised they managed to keep them so long being such a small town that thrives on gossip.

What could have been better:
* Jaymie is boring and doesn't seem very focused. I have no idea why two men are interested in her (and I hate love triangles). Her and Daniel are so boring on the pages, there is no chemistry and Jaymie rarely thinks about him unless he is in front of her.
* The feud and finding out the cause got old fast. Seriously, its been years since high school, get over it . Jaymie whining about it constantly after years of ignoring was annoying.
* Kathy seemed unpleasant. Yes, she had some bad breaks, but wasting all her energy on trying to get even made her unlikable.

This is a good cozy mystery set in Michigan in the summer over the 4th of July. When Jaymie, who has a business in vintage cookware, attends the fireworks the night of the holiday, she discovers her nemesis murdered, and murdered with an item belong to Jaymie. The two had an ongoing feud, even though Jaymie never knew what had turned Kathy against her, so naturally Jaymie was suspected of the murder. There are also some interesting subplots going on that give this story a bit more depth than the usual cozy.

This is the second book in The Vintage Kitchen Mystery series. I read the first book a couple of years ago, and I didn’t find it interesting or a fun cozy read. I decided I wouldn’t continue the series, but my book club voted for the second book in the series to be our book pick for the month. I did not enjoy the second book either. I did not connect with the characters at all. I felt small the town was never really a part of the book. There were also too many characters for me. The series is just a “no” for me. I could not get invested in the book, the characters, or the murder mystery.

Jaymie Leighton, vintage kitchenware and cookbook collector lives in Queensville Michgan. She is writing a cookbook using her grandmother's recipes. While shopping at the Queensville Emporium she has a run in with her ex-friend Kathy Cooper when Ella Douglas accidently runs over Kathy's grandson Connor with her wheelchair. Ella swears it was a mistake but Kathy isn't buying it and makes a scene right in the shopping center.

Kathy has been mad at Jaymie since high school but Jaymie never really knew why. Queensville being so small a town it has been hard for them to avoid each other. And with the July 4th picnic coming up they are bound to see each other there.

The day of the picnic everything turned out so nicely until Kathy is found dead behind the washroom and since the murder weapon found there was Jaymie's salad bowl, she becomes there number one suspect.

Jaymie does her own investigating to clear her name when Johnny Stanko is arrested. Valetta is Jaymie's best friend and believes in her heart that Johnny is innocent. While snooping around the Jaymie has a few run ins with the police in town.

Jaymie goes to check on Ella because sshe hasn't been feeling well and wanted to make sure she was alright. When Ella doesnt answer the door Jaymie sees her lying on the floor. Unsure if she fell or the killer stuck again Jaymie gets into Ella's house and comes face to face with the killer...

This book was such a fantastic read!!!

We have vintage kitchenware and cookbook collector, Jaymie Leighton admiring her latest acquisition, a beautiful piece of square-bottomed depression glass in the form of a bowl. Jaymie has no inkling that this treasured collectable will become an instrument in the death of her once best friend.

Victim, Kathy Cooper came to high school one day and began a hatred of Jaymie that has lasted almost two decades. While Jaymie is perplexed as to what caused this rabid hatred and wants to heal the situation, Kathy makes it publicly clear she isn't interested...making Jaymie suspect number one in Kathy's horrible death.

Jaymie begins her investigation with co-horts aiding, while keeping busy trying to pen a cookbook of vintage recipes and making holiday rental picnic baskets. As she investigates, Jaymie learns that Kathy has had a difficult life and not made friends easily.

This novel is the second in the series and I have learned that I like the main character very much. I find Jaymie to be well educated, have many interests that interest me, and I like her surrounding friends and family. I enjoy the interaction of the characters and the setting of the tale.

This particular novel had me surprised by the killer. The person was in front of me but I looked around, not directly at. I was taken by surprise. This was a treat for me as I often get a sense of the perpetrator, not this time.

I will look forward to the next novel in the Vintage Kitchen Mysteries.

In Queensville, Michigan, Jaymie Leighton, enjoys collecting her vintage kitchenware and cookbooks. She has lots of friends, including her ex's fiancé, the family at the local B&B, and a couple of men who are interested in her. But Kathy, her best friend from twenty years ago, still refuses to speak to her and Jaymie has decided it's time to finally clear the air. This can't happen though, because Kathy's body is discovered by Jaymie at the Fourth of July celebration, murdered with Jaymie's beautiful vintage square glass bowl. Everyone in town knows about their situation. Thus begins the search for the killer.

This is the second book in this series and I have found them both very enjoyable. Kathy is spunky and determined in everything she does. The descriptions of the vintage items in the story is excellent and fascinating, including the foods from old cookbooks. The mystery was full of twists and turns, but made total sense in end. Looking forward to the next one. I've been listening to these on audio, which adds a lots to my enjoyment also.

I enjoyed this mystery and some of the characters (the MC and her friends), but there were some really snippy unlikable characters. I mostly like the vintage kitchen angle and many times during reading this book I found myself looking up many of the items she mentioned. I also appreciated the fact that her neighbors were wary of her constant questioning and nosiness (in some books the MC can be as nosy as she wants and no one seems to think its strange or annoying). I'm sad that she seems to have trouble with commitment, but hopefully she can find happiness with Daniel or at least figure out what she wants in life. There wasn't a ton of character development in this book, so hopefully that is improved in the future. There was a lot going on in this little town and many secrets to be found. I would like to continue this series.

I really want to love this series, I love the setting, I love the vintage cookware, recipes etc, I just can't get excited about the heroine Jaymie, she is just too wishy-washy for me. She can't settle on one job or career (she's 32 years old if she was 22 you could understand), can't decide on a love interest, in this book she can't decide on how to go forward with mending an old friendship gone bad, and when the ex-friend is murdered, with one of her old bowls, of course she is a person of interest. She looks for answers but seems to churn up nothing but bad feelings wherever she goes and no real answers. I get how she finally gets what's going on but it's almost by accident. Maybe she'll figure herself out in the next book but I haven't decided whether I will read it or not.

My god, this was awful! I have not read the first book in this series. This one I picked up at the library...I like vintage kitchenware and the rivalry between old friends sounded interesting, but this book flopped in a big way! The characters are completely unrealistic.. none of them speak or behave like any reasonable, normal people. The book also contains too many extraneous characters that serve no point to the actual storyline, a bunch of leftwing politics and finger wagging, and annoying names like Valetta and a misspelled Jaymie... this book is a bust on every level.

I liked this pretty well. The only part I didn’t really like was when Jaymie said that Kathy was the best friend she ever had. I’m not sure if she was being manipulative at the time to get more info, but throughout the whole first book and most of the second, Kathy was Jaymie’s enemy and just seemed like a mega bitch. I guess they had a good friendship when they were young, but what about Valetta? She’s a good friend, and probably wouldn’t turn on Jaymie over a rumor without talking to her about it first.

Second in the series. A fun cozy mystery with delightful references to vintage kitchenware. I enjoyed the story and the plot twists but the main character was a little bit overplayed. Her curiosity and continuous being a bit dipsy wore on me.

This one was just okay for me. I have not read the first book in the series. Other than maybe missing some relationship details, I feel like I was able to read this book without having read the first one.

I expected more vintage kitchen details. It seemed like, though that was the theme for the series, it didn't have as much as I thought there would be. I think it would have helped and also made Jaymie a more endearing character. She fell a bit flat for me. She seemed kind of petty and just aimless in this book. For me, a connection to the main character is really important in enjoying the cozy mystery, and I just didn't have that with Jaymie. She felt immature. By the end of the book, it did seem like she was growing some as a character, so maybe that is developed further as the series continues.

I do not plan on reading additional books in the series. I did figure out the killer earlier than I like to. The way the other characters were focused on in the story made it kind of obvious. This book also felt like it focused more on nuanced details of minor characters rather than focusing on a small group of core characters and the plot - which is why there didn't seem to be much room for the vintage kitchen aspect.

That being said, I did want to complete the book to prove my theory on the killer and also see if anything was resolved for Jaymie's relationship with Daniel. The ending wrapped up the story well and does urge the reader on to book 3 if you did like the characters.

I checked this book out of the library for Cozy Escape Book Club and am sharing my honest review.

Welcome to Queensville, Michigan. We are spending the
July 4 th holiday going to a picnic with Jaymie Leighton
and her family. What a delicious day until after the fireworks
are over and Jaymie finds a former classmate dead and her
young nephew wandering around alone. Worse yet the
murder weapon just happened to be Jaymie’s Depression-era
glass bow broken in half over her classmate’s head.
Jaymie is a vintage kitchenware and cookbook collector. She
had an estranged relationship with the classmate who had
once been her best friend. When the authorities start looking
at her, she decides to do her own investigation.
The book is intriguing with a colorful, zany array of characters
with a lot to secrets being hidden and grudges being held from
high school years long ago plus family issues and love affairs.
They are involved in a puzzling plot with a surprise ending.
This is book # 2 in the Vintage Kitchen Cozy Mystery series.
It is the first I have read and can be read as a stand alone
with any difficulty understanding relationships.
