This is the second book I have read on Jesus. I am interested in learning who he was and what it was that made people believe in him. This book definitely answered those questions for me. In short chapters and without going into details, the author introduces Jesus to the reader. I loved the fact that he didn’t go into depth as I don’t feel like I am ready for that; I don’t have much knowledge of the christian religion (or any religion for that matter), so that would have demanded too much of me. Therefore, I was happy with the author’s approach to this biography.
The language is simple and accessible, and despite the fact that I do not know much about the christian belief, I was able to follow the author most of the time. Although he refers to the bible quite a lot, his main focus is on Jesus as a person which was exactly what I was looking for in this book. And I do have the feeling that I gained a clearer idea of who Jesus was.
Since the book is not very long and does not go into depth, the author’s view on Jesus’ story seemed a bit one-sided. At times I felt he was not being critical enough in his analysis. But I could be wrong. Whatever the case may be, I do think that the author put too much of himself into this book. It quickly becomes apparent that he himself is a believer; he defends Jesus a few times and he also points out his greatness in an emotional way a couple of times. One time I thought he actually sounded offended when he spoke of atheists. I would have liked this book better had it been less subjective. A non-fiction book like this, should be as objective as possible in my humble opinion.
What I liked most about this biography were the little anecdotes the author included. You can probably find them all somewhere in the bible but since I haven’t read the bible, some of them were new to me. They really showed me what kind of a human being (or saint) Jesus was. So I loved those parts a lot! Very entertaining and touching.
To bring this review to a conclusion: I liked the book; it’s well written, doesn’t go into details, and gives an overview of the things that were going on during Jesus’ lifetime. A solid 3-star read for me!
