Synthesizes modern archaeological and textual discoveries and studies to highlight the events of Jesus' life, distinguishing what is certain, probable, improbable, and symbolic in the gospels
I found it is an interesting study on the Bible. The most surprising information I heard is that Jesus did not sacrifice his life to save sinners, but got killed since he tried to show us who and how God is and his teachings and his ways threatened the authoritative Jews such as Jewish king, high priests, Sadducees and Pharisees. The Holy Father, Love, is not that cruel to be pleased to sacrifice His Own Son to redeem us, the sinners. Jesus could not evade his own death while proclaiming the Truth, the true God, for us. Jesus did not want to die so he was very afraid of his own death like us. His ideas why Jesus'being killed is a little difficult to agree and accept as he said. Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit is Holy Trinity. It is Father who shows His Love through Jesus' death. I believe that is the same Father in Jesus sacrifice His Life for us.
Jacues Duquesne tried to show the differences among the approaches of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and which episodes are more reliable. You don't have to accept the bible as historical truth but rather comprehend many parts of it as literature work (this does not mean that the bible is fiction, but the authors of the four bible must have written some parts of the bible to accomplish their own goals as they aimed).
Duquesne interpreted the conduct of Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus more humanly and it is more understandable and convincing.
You don't have to believe all that he said but interesting to access to different viewpoint about Jesus.
One of the best of its kind. Takes a very neutral approach, but outlines all of the available background information without trying to convince anyone one way or the other, regarding historicity. Very valuable in describing the basic habits and conventions of the people of the time, whether Jewish, Roman, or other.
