The Long Game

Rate this book
Smooth talking. Ambitious. Loyal. Twenty-year-old Shay Reilly has proven himself to his Irish-American Gypsy clan on small-scale cons, but now the clan leader has a bigger mission for him: playing the long game. To rake in the big score he's after, he needs to con co-ed Spencer into falling in love with him. He knows he should see Spencer as a mere means to an end, but that's easier said than done when there's a witty, attractive girl in your arms. Now the only thing that can keep them apart is the thing that brought them together: Shay's plans of revenge against someone who wronged his clan and family years before-Spencer's father.

The Long Game is a terrific effort from J.L. Fynn. I'm not normally a big romance guy. In fact, I'm kind of not. So I speak with the perspective that a lot of guys have, I think. But this is a legitimately fantastic book! It has a very strong story that I think will hold the interest of readers, and unlike a lot of romantic books today, it isn't just an excuse to get to the characters making out. There actually is an interesting story in there about a culture that I wasn't familiar with before. It's hard to recommend most romance books to guys (for good reason), but this is absolutely an exception to the rule. I think both casual readers and typically romance fans will enjoy it immensely.

Who knew gypsies could be so hot?

I was immediately drawn into this book by the novelty of the "Traveler clan" of which Shay and his brother Jimmy Boy are a part. I had no experience with Irish-American Gypsies, and the author created the village and clan hierarchy seamlessly for readers, letting us easily understand the stakes at play in Shay's world.

The "long game" that Shay undertakes will draw in any readers of the new adult category immediately as he works to gain the trust of a savvy -- though potentially sheltered -- coed named Spencer, the daughter of his target. Their relationship feels authentic and is a rewarding read.

This is a quick read that pulls readers along from chapter to chapter. Well-written and unique, I highly recommend The Long Game!

Looking for something different but love contemporary New Adult? Read this! The Long Game immediately hooked me with its crazy original setting and characters (a smart, sexy Gypsy? yes, please), and Fynn's fantastic writing had me tearing through the pages. It's a fascinating look inside a world you don't hear much about--American Gypsy or Traveler culture--and it's evident Fynn did her research. The scenes that took place in Louisiana dripped with mood and atmosphere, and I can't wait to get back there for Book 2. The Long Game is a quick, romantic read with plenty of sweet and a dash of sexy!

OMG, Shay. I think I'm in love with this guy. He's so... Shay. Just yeah. Moving on.

I'll be the first to admit I'm a crap book reviewer, especially when I love what I've read. I mean, there's only so many ways you can swoon over a book, but The Long Game made me in every sense of the word.

I don't know what it was - perhaps it was the completely original setting and history of the characters. How many gypsy books do you know of?! Perhaps it was Fynn's authentic voice. I don't know. I just know I adored this book.

The Long Game is an original, captivating story of true love, and a stunning debut from J.L Fynn.

This book had me hooked since the first chapter. I've never read a book which included the culture of Travelers, and I was pleasantly surprised! I literally couldn't put this book down, and I desperately hope they're working on the sequel!
The character development and the relationship between Spence and Shay made the hopeless romantic in me go completely crazy. Definitely recommend this book to everyone that likes New Adult and fast paced romance!

I liked the fast pace and interesting dilemma faced by the hero of the story. It was further interesting to read about a group of people in the United States that I had never heard of before. I'd like to know more about this mysterious group. I ended the story eager to read the next book in the series.

This was a fun, exciting book. I really liked the main character, Shay, and the intriguing Irish Traveler culture he comes from. Even though I have no experience with the Irish Travelers (or Irish Gypsies), I felt like I was part of their world by looking through Shay's eyes. At the same time, Shay's conflicting emotions between loyalty to family and to love felt real and powerful regardless of culture. Dropping such a well developed character into a plot that moves at break-neck speed with a love interest that makes me want to fight Shay over her, and, well, I couldn't stop reading it. After book 1, I can't wait to find out what happens in book 2.

5 stars for The Long Game!

Although the ending did kind of left me hanging. Anyway, I can't wait for the next book! I want to hear Tommy and Maggie's story!

Over-all, I give Shay and Spencer a big gypsy hug!

This review and many others can be found on my blog - Feed Your Fiction Addiction

This book is such a quick and enjoyable read! I was honestly shocked when I went on Amazon and saw that the paperback version of this book is 303 pages because it felt much shorter than that! I wanted more!

I won't go into the plot too much because the synopsis does a good job of summarizing it. Instead, I'll just right in with my review!

The negatives:

Wanted even more development of the romance.
This is not to say that I didn't enjoy the romance in this book, because I actually really loved Shay and Spencer together (see my positives below). I just wish that Fynn had given us a little bit more time to see the relationship unfold. I wanted to see Shay actually try to con Spencer for a bit before he fell for her - I felt like he started feeling attached to her a little too quickly (and maybe she fell for him a little too easily as well). I just would have liked to have seen more of the early development of their relationship.

What I loved:

The Irish Travelers.
The Long Game could have easily felt like a rehashed plot - we've all seen this on TV or in the movies - the con artist falls in love with his mark. But, the Irish Traveler angle made this book so much more interesting! I loved reading about this unique group of people (with their con artist lifestyle, arranged marriages, closeness of their families, etc) - in fact, I was inspired to do a little reading about them on the internet after I read this book. I'm actually really interested in how the author did her research for this book and how much of it is true to life. Real details about the Travelers seems to be sketchy, but there are definitely reports on them. It's all very intriguing!

Shay.
Shay is a really complex character, which I loved about him. On the one hand, he's ambitious and wants the Traveler lifestyle (and all of its benefits). He sees an opportunity to improve his life and he's ready to jump at it, even when his brother and mother warn him that he's in over his head. This could come off as a really negative trait, but instead I found myself sympathizing with Shay and understanding him because of his upbringing. While he may be ambitious, he's also very loyal to his family (and, eventually, to Spencer) and he's sweet and charming as well. I could definitely see myself falling for a guy like Shay!

Shay and Spencer.
While I would have liked to have seen a bit more development at the beginning of Shay and Spencer's romance, the scenes that Fynn did give us between these two were excellent! I loved their chemistry and the fun in their romance (especially in one scene involving a fountain and the scenes where Shay shared his Irish heritage with Spencer). These scenes were really enchanting and I only wanted even more of them!!

I thought that The Long Game was a really fantastic read and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance, but would love a little twist to the typical romance story. This book is a quick read that will brighten up your day! 4/5 stars.

I really tired not to spoil the book here and I really hope I didn't. But wow! What can I say? This book took me by surprise. I honestly didn't expect it to be any different from other books that involve a cons or missions and I expected to be fast and straight to the point. Like I thought that it was going to just be, someone assigns a mission to the main character, falls in love with traitor or daughter of the traitor, gets the goods and leaves with no problem. But I'm soooooo glad it didn't come to that. The author wrote a quick book but with a lot of details that make the book more interesting. I love that the author explained the Irish/traveller customs and how they do things. It made me feel more in touch with the character and his clan/family. I even tried to do their accents, but alas, I couldn't do it without sounding and looking stupid in the process. I love the sassiness and the attraction that the character has with the girl. I really love how she didn't right away, fall head over heels with the main character. She actually took some time. The main character and her are so adorable even if he was tricking her and I couldn't help but ship them as they progressed. I was not expecting the ending nor some of the parts that included the villain. I can honestly say, that I am not a fan of him and I never liked him from the start I also really hate him. But besides that guy, I am so excited to read the sequel when it comes out, though it might be a long time until it comes out. I really want to know what happens to his family, and I'm extremely curious to know how the clan will treat the traitor and his daughter. Overall, this is definitely one book I really recommend :)

Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I do not know the author and selected the book based on the blurb. And I was so glad that I did. It's a great book. It's pretty short, only 300 pages or so, but I read it all today. I couldn't put it down!

Shay is an american gypsy, or a traveller, as they prefer to be called who lives with his mom and big brother as part of a clan of travellers in the south. He's a novice con man, used to working with his brother on small jobs. Then he gets called up to do a big job for the head of the clan and he's determined to do it right. He has to con a college girl into believing he loves her in order to get back something the clan leader lost 20 years ago. Problem is, he seems to be falling for his own con.

It sounds a bit like a cheesy romance novel, but it's so much more than that. It's a great coming of age story, as well as really human look at falling in love for the first time. It was well written and edited, and the story has just the right pacing to keep you hooked from beginning to end.

I've already read the next book in the series, a novella called "The Short Game" and I can't wait to move on to the next one!

Fast paced and engaging, J.L. Fynn's debut novel kept me eagerly turning the pages from beginning to end. This is the story of Shay, the likeable though (thankfully) flawed hero, coming of age. At the age of 20 he's convinced himself that he has life figured out. He knows exactly what he wants and will do anything needed to get it. When an opportunity arises to have it all handed to him on a silver platter he takes it without hesitation. One job and he'll be golden, set for life with the bonus of the prettiest girl in his clan on his arm. Life will be perfect.
It doesn't take long after leaving the sheltered life he'd known with his Molly Weasley-ish mother, Maggie, and his older brother, Jimmy Boy, to realize that life is never that easy. There is always a price to pay and life altering decisions to make.
'The Long Game' is the perfect book for a day at the beach or curled up in a blanket with a good cup of tea. It will leave you anticipating the prequel and sequels...hopefully at least one of which will focus on Jimmy Boy.

This first book for J.L. Fynn was a quick read and the story line was different from any book I've ever read. The main characters Shay and Spencer are both lovable characters in their own way. Both of them are intelligent and knowledgeable about music, and I enjoyed reading about their music interests.

Toward the end of the book much of it was predictable for me, and also things just came together a little simplistically; however, I enjoyed the book enough to want to read book 2 and see where Shay's and Spencer's relationship takes them. If they go back to the Village, what will be in store for them?

Maggie, Shay's mother, and Tommy, a traitor of sorts, have a story of their own to tell, or at least I'd like to know more about their relationship.

I liked it ok. I liked the idea of the stroy about a clan Irish gypsies doing cons to make money. Shay being recruited to do the 'long game' and help get revenge on an old clan memeber that left years before.

I liked Shay and Spencer, there were a cute couple and their romance was sweet, but it was insta-love. I don't mind it when they fall fast and hard, but it has to be done right. Like in war time where the setting is different, but that's just me.

The cliffhanger though is what has me wanting to know what happens next!! What's happening to And I would like to read Jimmy Boy's story, also the prequel with Maggie and Tommy and find out more about their characters.

This was a great book and a wonderful glimpse into the culture of the Irish Travelers. Shay, a Traveler boy, is ambitious and wants to marry the daughter of the wealthiest man in town, Pop. He is honored when Pop asks him to help him with a plan that has been in the making for years, a long game. Shay is asked to steal a book from a man who betrayed Pop more than twenty years ago, but in order to do so, Shay has to use the man's daughter, Spencer. When Shay meets Spencer, he ends up falling for her and learns that love may be the most dangerous gamble of all. This book was beautifully written with wonderfully vibrant characters. I can't wait to read the sequel, and I think it is a wonderful start to a very promising series.

r2r provided by author for honest review. . I have to admit I never read blurbs I'm a title kind of girl so I slowly learned about the blurb and was lost within a story that unraveled very delicately. granted the first three chapters I had to force my way through because they were a slow burn. but after shay met Spencer I loved the book with a new vigor. I have to say I never even imagined how the long game would end but im wicked glad I have the short game as a r2r as well. .. how'd I get so lucky :)

Everything about The Long Game is superb. Shay's character is multidimensional, which makes him very real and tangible. The setting and the love story draw you in and don't let go, even at the very end. The Traveler culture is amazing and something readers are going to demand more of. I became completely invested in the plot, held my breath through the twist and turns, and cheered the love story. An amazing novel from an author to watch.

3.5 stars!! It was really hard for me to get into this book for some reason. Once I did it was so fast paced, it was over. I really liked Shay, the con man with a conscious. The premise behind it all its completely different from anything I have read lately. I have never read about "travelers", but I think I like them.

What an absolutely amazing read! The story was fun and engaging. Well-written and entertaing. Thoroughly enjoyed the conflict between one's loyalty to their family and their past versus a loyalty to themself and what could be the beginning of their future. While I've read some really great books lately, this was the first that I felt frustrated that there were no more chapters...yet.

I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I have no personal connection to the writer and/or publisher.

Now the only thing that can keep them apart is the thing that brought them together: Shay's plans of revenge against someone who wronged his clan and family years before-Spencer's father.

Characters

I don't really know what I expected the characters in this novel to be like so imagine my surprise when they ended up actually being quite while rounded. While not all of the characters are necessarily good people they are pretty solid characters, whether you like them or hate them.

In the character of Shay I was reminded of two other characters, for some reason. The well loved Shawn Hunter from Boy Meets World, as well as one of the characters from the short lived show The Riches. Let me make one thing clear though, the plot does not in any way, end up like either of those shows. It was just a little niggling feeling in the back of my head as I read through the novel.

The main lead is well rounded, without being too flaw free, a pet peeve of mine, and he does show admirable growth throughout the novel which is always something to be considered an accomplishment.

The female lead, again, is a good girl without seeming too Mary-Sueish or TOO good, with her own flaws and ideals.

The background characters too, should be something the authors are proud of as they are also fleshed out and enjoyable, though some more than others.

Plot

There was a familiarity to the plot when I was reading, I will admit, but not something that I found overly daunting or dislikable. I actually really enjoyed it, and found myself whipping through the last couple of chapters in an effort to find out what was going to happen.

Sometimes the pacing raced on, with small vignettes it seemed being used as a nod to things which had happened which we might not have seen. I can see where this might not be the best for some people but I actually quite enjoyed it, as I am not a fan of those who insist on revealing every little detail of their characters lives. Sometimes you really do just want them to get on with it already, and this book does not disappoint.

While the plot is not perfect, it is an easy read, and detailed enough to capture a reader's attention.

Overall Thoughts

I really, really, really, enjoyed this book. Though the first person narrative threw me for a loop at first I soon found myself sinking into the novel, and the world of the characters in it. It was clearly researched, which I appreciate and I find myself so excited to continue onward.

Good for?
Those who loved Shawn Hunter and The Riches? No?
People who grew up with novels as delightful and knowing as The Outsiders.
People who like contemporary young adult romances with a little bit of action thrown in.

Shay Reilly is a Traveler, part of a clan of people with Irish descent who leave their compound for months at a time going around the country conning people for money. He has never really belonged though, mainly due to the fact he was allowed to finish high school where most Travelers stop at 7th grade. When Shay acts up one night at a party, he is given the chance to redeem himself by their clan leader. Shay has to participate in the long game, a con that could last a while, to seek revenge.
I enjoyed this book mainly because it was a very different world. I knew nothing about Travelers. Yes I have heard of gypsies who go around the country conning people, but never the elusive Travelers who are of Irish heritage. I liked the insight into their culture, which the first fourth of the book primarily built on. It was engrossing to see that these people live the way they do, with such strict rules, in today’s world. They are kind of a throwback to a completely different time.
I am a big fan of romance books told through the male’s perspective. Shay is the main character in the book, the story told from his eyes the entire time. There is no drama or angst from him; everything is fairly straight forward, even when it comes to dealing with Spencer. He wants to steal from Tommy, yet he respects him for what he has done. I mean really who does that? That is just who Shay is. And I love Shay. He talks a good game and has tons of swag, but he really has no idea who he is. He is ambitious and wants more out of life, but he does not want to hurt people to get there. He may be a con artist, but he is a decent person. I love that Maggie taught him to cook, and he put his skills to good use.
The secondary characters were not as well developed as Shay was, but I still grew attached to Spencer and Jimmy Boy. Spencer seemed like a shy girl, yet came out of her shell with Shay, enough to play outrageous schemes and go along with a simple con like a pro. I think Spencer and Shay are good for each other, balancing the other out. Shay may have wanted an arranged marriage with a Traveler girl, but he realizes that may not be what he really needs. Jimmy boy is like Shay’s conscience, able to read Shay and know what he is thinking. I like the fact they two of them are willing to take on battles for the other, regardless of the reasoning.
Disclaimer here: the book has kind of a cliff hanger ending. Action happens and the story ends before it can be completely resolved. It seemed more like I was missing part of the story the way it just cut off. I want to get my hands on the next book so I can stop worrying about the characters. I know I will stew about it until I can get some answers. And I have so many questions about Maggie and Tommy!
Overall, I enjoyed this book and it was an incredibly fast read. I went through it in one sitting without even being aware of it.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review**

It's been a long time since I read a kind of Romeo & Juliet star crossed lovers book and this book did not disappoint. I only wish I had the time/ money to go straight on and read book two in epic book marathon style however it will be put on my to read list after the 40 other books that have been there for quite some time- problems of a bookaholic.

The main characters are Shane/ Shay and Spencer, I liked both of these characters for their uniqueness and differences. One who had been submerged in this world the other who only got to know about it towards the end of book one but I feel as though they have a great future ahead of them both full of surprises, feuds and hopefully some cons. Shay was everything a leading man should be, attractive full of himself and in the beginning unwilling to to accept love but of course every leading man has to go through some change in order to be sufficient for our leading lady and in this case it was learning to love as well as learning to trust the man he was running a con against. Spencer on the other hand has all the qualities of a princess in a high tower, she has been guarded from the world her father used to be a part of and this only changes when she goes off to college; that's when she finally starts to become herself and in the process meets and falls in love with Shay. When reading the blurb of the book it does make it out to be the Romeo and Juliet star crossed lovers romance novel however when reading you kind of forget about the con and just see the couple- that is until Judd comes along.

The secondary characters I loved especially Maggie who although isn't physically present throughout the book is very present through Shay and his actions- this is excellently done by the author as you feel as though the character is a real person. I also liked What's brother and Spencer's dad who all influence the book tremendously. There are of course the baddies as well Judd being the main one in this category and I'm not sure he was the real baddie because he really is crazy or because it had something to do with his dad- hopefully I will get to read more on that when I finally get round to reading book 2.

The pacing was great allowing us plenty of tome to get to know characters and understand relationships before adding in complications or external influences from other characters.

The storyline was unlike anything I've read before brilliantly original introducing a completely unexplored type of character and their surroundings and offering fantastic insight into that environment.

3.5 stars.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

This is an original type of story. With the gypsy’s history and characters it developed in an interesting and unique book. J.L. Fynn has a perfect way of writing, it wraps you around the story, and captivates more than you can possible imagine. The characters are well developed, strong, with passion in their story. I don’t know how to explain it. I thought I was right there, next to them, feeling what they were feeling at the same time.

Shay Reilly…wow I can’t describe him well enough, and I think I’m falling in love with a fictional character. Handsome, smart, a fighter, a player and a romantic, even if he doesn’t addmit it. He is a man…what do you expect?! His main flaw, he thinks he knows the world, and he knows what he wants to become. And when Shay Reilly has something in mind, nothing can stop him. At the age of 20 years old, he has a mature mind and an even stronger character.

Shay has a chance to prove himself, so he grabs it, thinking this going to be an easy win. He has to track down an old adversary of his Clan, retrieve the stolen property and bring it back. The main plan is to go to college, meet the marks daughter- Spencer Costello, get the property back and finally move up in the clan. He wants to up high and won’t stop at nothing. But what Shay didn’t figured out, it’s that he starts to fall in love with Spencer. And why not?! She is the most beautiful girl and any man would be proud to have her on his arm, smart, educated.
I have to say now I can’t wait to read the next book! I loved everything about The Long Game, the multidimensional characters, the fact that the characters didn’t fall in love in a second, and they even think clear and mature. These characters became like old friends to me, I feel like I really know them. Thank you for the opportunity to read this magnificent book!

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*

I like it, I love it, I want some more of it! This book was a difference approach to the NA genre and it was so refreshing! My only qualm (and it's a good one) was that I wanted MORE.

Shay Reilly is a member of the traveler clan i.e. Irish-American Gypsies. This is very different from the American Gypsy shows on TV which I must admit are a guilty pleasure of mine. However, Flynn creates a good characterization of the gypsy culture in her book with strong characters and details about their traditions, cons, and relationships. While I'm not saying this is true of traveler clans, it did make for an interesting read. From the first con pulled by Shay and Jimmy Boy, I knew I'd like it. I love romance novels where con men fall for their ultimate con. It's very Oceans 11 and Thomas Crowne Affair-ish.

We follow Shay from his initial introduction to his agreeing to take part in a "long game" to exact revenge on behalf of "Pop", an elite member of the clan. He decides to enter college, wine, dine, and seduce Spencer, a reserved co-ed.

Which brings me to Spencer. I like Spencer, obviously not as much as I adore "bad boy" Shay, but I felt Flynn did a great job matching the two and making their love more solid and relationship based than some other NA novels I've read. I believed their love and I like what it did for Shay, considering his whole interest in the Long Game is for increasing his status in the clan.

I'm excited to continue reading this series! I hope we get to see more of Shay and Spencer in the other books!

***I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review***

Shay lives in a small village with his clan. He shares a trailer with his mother and brother. He, is a Traveler. And a conman.

Spencer is a college freshman at Balanova. A member if the Order of Irish Agustinians house. An irish heritage only house.

Shay's job is to get a book that Spencer's dad has been hiding for the last 20 years. He has to get it back for ole Pop Sheedy. To show him he's worthy of a job this big and maybe he'll get more in the future. Sheedy has promised him his daughter Rosie's hand in return. But after evrything is over, does he want her hand? Is this still the life for him? He's always wondered if he was cut for this.

I couldn't put this book down! It was such a page turner! Just one more chapter, then another. This book has everything, drama, romance, sex, laughter, fighting, etc. There's nothing it doesn't have! And it was very well written with just the right pace.

There wasn't a character I didn't like in this book! Shay and Spencer were my favorites. Ok, maybe Rosie wasn't a favorite. She seemes like a trouble maker. The kind of trouble maker that nobody would believe could do such a thing. We'll see what she has in store in the next book.

This is not normally the kind of book I would buy or read. However, knowing one of the authors, I bought it to support her, as I believe it is important to support authors you know – even if it’s only slightly.

I’m glad I bought it. The more of it I read, the faster I read and finished it in under a day.

This is an interesting romantic suspense novel and having the principal characters be Travelers – Irish gypsies who live by the con – was a new twist in a genre that tends to favor characters who work in exotic locales or upscale occupations.

The authors provide plenty of twists in the story. Some will surprise you, some you will see coming.

Some of the secondary characters could have been fleshed out more. And one antagonist was a little too ‘stock character’ to be fully believable.

I wish this book had one or two more chapters. While the romantic part was fully resolved, the suspense side wasn’t and left me wondering what happened. It would have been nice to know.

If you want a good romantic suspense read, you won’t go wrong with The Long Game.

This book started out slow, but picked up about 50 pages in.

Shay a traveler, or otherwise known as a gypsi has been put on a long con, something that seems to have been put into motion 20 years earlier. He is supposed to bring the leader of his clan a book. Something he is told has to do with payback for his dad's death. He is supposed to get close to an ex clan members daughter. But what happens when the plan Get's turned back against him, and Spencer get to him first.

Spencer is a college student who had moved from town to town all of her life. She runs into Shay by chance, or so she thinks.

This story was good, however I wish it had a little more pull to drag me in faster, because it did turn out to be something good to read. I have finished 1.5 as well and I almost feel it should have been put into one book and told from two different points of reference. Overall, different story with etravelers and something to look into if you enjoy a little bit of drama with your romance.
