The Sea of Zemira

Rate this book
A ruthless pirate. A deadly siren. And a love that was never meant to be.

For the past twenty years, Nola has watched King Matthias destroy her homeland, turning it into a barren wasteland. The only magic left in their kingdom is bound to the enchanted crystal of his crown. Though hope lies across the Portland Sea, in the heart of the Fae and Elven Kingdom, Nola has one minor problem: She’s a siren who has never used her tail. All she’s ever known is the land beneath her feet.

After stowing away on a pirate ship, Nola encounters Captain Lincoln, an arrogant yet handsome pirate who harbors a deep hatred of the siren folk. This hatred makes Nola fear she won’t make it to the Fae land alive.

However, the captain surprises her when he agrees to take her to the Queen of the Fae on the condition that she remain his prisoner within his quarters until they reach dry land.

Amidst massive waves, sea monsters, and dragons, arises a bond no one ever expected—the love between a deadly siren and a ruthless pirate.

Hey readers! I'm D.L. Blade.

I've always had a passion for creative writing, starting my career as an author with somewhat milder books and now exclusively writing dark romance. I love looking for ways to take my readers on a journey into a world of unconventional love, morally gray men, and villains who get the girl.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy reading, spending time with my family, attending rock concerts, and exploring new restaurants in Denver.

I dream of continuing to create exciting novels for my readers and taking them on a journey through the magical realms that spill from the pages of my books.

***All three of my young adult novels are written under Diana B. Lynn. Please note that if you see the titles The Dark Awakening, The Dark Underworld & The Dark Deliverance out there, these are NOT adult, dark romances, like I write today. They are young adult romances.

Before I begin my review, I'd like to say that I read the first edition of this book so some of what you see me mention may be removed/improved by the time you read the second edition. Just keep that in mind.

The Sea of Zemira has too much going on, that's my impression. It has everything from some popular YA book tropes, to an almost but not actually love interest with high cheekbones, black hair and blue eyes and even the infamous breath holding line (x2).

There's mermaids/sirens, fairies, pixies, elves, trolls, gnomes, dragons, pirates...and a wendigo. I definitely missed some like the will-o'the-wisp. This would all be fine if it worked together. But it doesn't.

The storyline, to its credit, isn't hard to follow and the book doesn't feel like 500 pages at all. The problem is that it doesn't connect well together. The natural flow isn't there. A lot of the situations the characters find themselves in are too...simple. Too easy.

The writing was sometimes alright, other times very repetitive. For example, Nola was referred to as "the siren/the siren girl" and Maizy as "the black haired pirate" several times in a single chapter and then again in the next. I completely understand not wanting to just say Nola Nola Nola or Maizy Maizy Maizy (or she she she) but that was too much.

While we're at names, I still don't understand the need to have pirate ones when everyone referred to each other by their real names 99% of the time.

I didn't grow attached to any of the characters, except Elijah which was moderate and didn't start until the second half of the book.

I also wasn't feeling the romance. It was cheesy and not the cute kind.

Now let's talk about some extras.

If you're someone who doesn't like the "I'm not like other girls" trope then this book is definitely not for you. It's obvious from Nola's first meeting with Elijah that it's heading there. The weird thing is, I quite like this trope. So how did it go wrong here? HOW?!

Then we have the descriptions of women's bodies vs men's bodies. And there is a difference. The men in the book come in all shapes and sizes but just about every young woman is curvy and has big breasts and/or perfectly sculpted legs.

I remember one mention of a muscular chest but that was of the love interest so it doesn't count. Please do correct me if there's more than one. For the men it's usually faces that are being focused on.

So that had me thinking, what if Nola was meant to be sapphic all along? That would make a lot of sense why she thinks noting breast size is important. Or maybe I'm just sensitive to such descriptions after the last monthly book for my book club which was similar in that regard, but worse.

I'm not usually one who reads reviews before starting a book because I want to form my own opinion but for this one I took a peek and the four and five star ones got me really excited. Perhaps my expectations were too high. I feel let down.

I'd also note that while I said the book has YA tropes it's not YA. At least not fully. There's some steam in the mix.

BUT. BUT. BUT. You should give this book a chance. Like I mentioned at the beginning edition #2 will undoubtedly be better and you might love it.

*Thank you to Booksirens for providing me with a copy of this book for which I'm leaving a review voluntarily*

I loved this story so much! It has good world building without slowing the pace of the story, and the plot was great too. Some twists that you don’t expect, and some slow burn romance. I can’t wait to see what the 2nd book has to bring to the story!

Do you love Fantasy with dragons, magic, and a good old-fashioned love story in between sword fights and Rum drinking Pirates? Then The Sea of Zemira is a book that you must read. D.L. Blade has written an old-fashioned high fantasy adventure that covers it all, from an Evil King, conspiracies, and lost heirs, to a lost treasure that could change the world. Nola flees from her homeland Zemira to find the Elves and other magical creatures who were banished to the Eastland Forest across the Portland Sea. Her mission is to convince the Elves and Fae to fight with the people of Zemira to free themselves from King Matthias. When she is forced to make a quick decision, she chooses a path that will forever change her life. She hides on a Pirate ship, hoping they will not harm her but take her to the Elves. When she meets the ship's Captain, she realizes she is in deep trouble, even more so when he declares she will be his captive for the journey and share his cabin. En route to the Eastern Forest, she has the adventure of a lifetime.

D.L. Blade has written a book of 500 pages filled with action, adventure, and romance. In a time when many writers divide their books into smaller bites, ending a story on a cliffhanger and forcing the reader to wait for months for the next book, it is refreshing to have a thick fantasy novel containing a complete story. Yes, there will be more stories in the same world, but when done with The Sea of Zemira, you will feel content that a chapter has been concluded and that it was fulfilling. This story reminded me of the Throne of Glass series, especially how detailed the world building is and the complexity of the storylines that come together in the end. The author touches on themes of oppression, the fight to be free, and the age-old theme of good and evil. The Sea of Zemira is a New Adult Fantasy and contains graphic violence and some explicit sex scenes that complement the story. Though it is a Romance, the actions and adventure drive the storytelling

Once upon a time there lived an evil king who governed the magical land of Zemira but hated magic. His hatred was so great that – using a powerful crystal – he banished magic from the kingdom as well as any folk who even breathed the word.

Those who refused to believe magic was dead formed a rebellion. Upon its discovery, the king slaughtered every magic wielder he could find, but two survived: a tiny baby Siren and a kindly fisherman who raised her along with his wife.

Twenty years later, Nola, under the careful watch of her all-too human parents, keeps her hair, eyes, and tail concealed. That is, however, until the prince notices her and begins asking questions.

And thus begins Nola’s tale!

I really enjoyed this book because it has something for every taste – pirates, elves, magic, evil kings, slaughtered royalty, betrayal, romance, enemies to lovers, and more! I found Nola to be completely likable, though a bit naïve ... but what can you expect from a young girl who’s been kept concealed so very strictly all of her life?

If you like high seas adventures filled with swashbuckling fun and excitement, then look no further, for here is your happy ending.

THE SEA OF ZEMIRA by DL BLAKE

A lovely lighthearted read. It draws on aspects of loved fairytales and pulls it together in a very entertaining novel. An evil Queen, an equally evil King, pirates, Dragons, Elves and Fae, all with their own agendas. What's not to love? Oh and if you add a really gorgeous pirate and a Siren who has no idea what she's capable of, yeah, that's right, a wonderfully paced book, with lots of adventure and secrets. I enjoyed seeing how the attraction between Nola and Lincoln flared up, festering until they had no choice but to succumb. I thought the characters credible and really interesting. Nola, for one, is a firm favourite! A little like Moses from the bible, she is found floating by a human family and embraced wholeheartedly as their daughter. She has to hide from being detected as being a magical being but as she grows older, she sorts to help the people of Zemira, which is dying without magic. The adventure that ensues, from meeting a dashing pirate captain, to finding the Fae and fighting evil inbetween, is beautifully spun. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wholeheartedly recommend this book, such a fun read!

I quite enjoyed this tale. It has a bit of it all, pirates, sirens, fairies, giants, fae and many more mentioned or being seen in small parts throughout the book. It is a story about finding your true self and conquering what you fear.
Nola was raised human but is not and must hide her true self because the king executes anyone who is seen as a magical being. She decides to leave her small village to help her "people" break free of the kings cruel and sadistic ways. This is where her journey begins. She is thrown into a world all new to her and meets Lincoln and the rest of the crew aboard the Sybil Curse.
The slow burn romance does read as a young adult but has adult content thrown. Some of the scenes are over way to easily and could have used some more content but over all I will continue on with the series and continue to join the crew of the Sybil Curse as they journal alone the Sea of Zemira.

I absolutely LOVED this book! Sexy pirates, sirens, dragons, and so many mythological creatures that we all have dreamed about!

The world/character building let's you perfectly envision the landscape and characters without long dragged out descriptions so many others do which was a huge plus for me!

Several times I found myself with my mouth left open as things were revealed(no spoilers).

An amazing read and I highly recommend!

This is an incredible read that you don’t want to miss. The Sea of Zemira broke the typical pirate story mold and went above and beyond what I could have imagined! The character development is always what makes or breaks a book and D.L. Blade’s attention to detail is flawless. Not only did she keep me riveted to the page, I got to know her characters so well that I cried - twice! I couldn’t put this book down!

THE SEA OF ZEMIRA is a swashbuckling standalone tale about magic and pirates that starts off slow but builds up momentum.

Nola is a siren but has been brought up in the magicless kingdom as a human. Lincoln is a pirate with his own story to tell. Together, these two could start and end a war.

I enjoyed this story but I did find parts of it hard to understand. There is a lot of head-hopping, with perspectives changing from paragraph to paragraph. Not only that, but there are changes from present to past, and back again, as well as places. This made it quite hard to follow in some parts as, at least with the copy I had, it wasn't clear just where, when, or who I was with. And don't forget handsome pirate, siren girl, etc.

On the whole, this was a story I enjoyed, but it didn't blow me away. This book has a long character list, and some of them aren't immediately clear over who they are.

I do recommend it if you like pirate romances as you will probably enjoy this one.

The Sea of Zemira: A Fantasy Romance is a phenomenal fast paced story that will have you craving more. D.L. Blade has created a fantasy realm that is vividly detailed and described making it easy to vision in your head. Bursting with adventure, betrayal and romance, a pirate fantasy that is sovereign. I absolutely love the fairies, elves, magic, monsters, pirates, siren mermaids and the other creatures. An exceptional written story with unique twists and an awesome pirate crew. I absolutely loved the ending and hope there will be a sequel. A must read for all fantasy romance lovers.

I received an ARC of this book from Booksprout.

I have fallen in love with this series. This book has so many different themes that blend together seamlessly.
The story has a central theme of an anti-magic fueled war, which spans over 2 decades. We experience multiple glimpses of the war during this time, filling in some very important details for what is upcoming for us.
We have the evil villain, the antihero, the found/lost family theme playing a huge role here.
The majority of the tale is told over the course of a seabound journey where our FMC grows and develops into herself, her powers and becomes this badass lovable heroine who I would follow in a heartbeat.
The book is full of steamy romance and love, friendship and trust.
There are a lot of plot twists and I adored them all, they kept me almost jumping out of my skin with tension.
I can honestly say I haven't enjoyed a series this much in a while.
Even the bad guys, you respect their evilness and hate them at the same time.
The good guys, a ragtag bunch of pirates, are the most hilarious and delightful sidekicks I've experienced.
The MMC, our FMC love interest, is absolutely swoonworthy, a handsome pirate that I got captain hook vibes from (once upon a time TV show version) yum.

This book was off the charts spicy. So I thoroughly recommend to my fellow smut sisters.

A sizzling 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for this beautiful tale, of fighting the unjust and clawing the way back to the good life, the one they were rightfully meant to have.

A fantastic example of a swashbuckling adventure Romantasy.

My favourite quote this book:
"To sail wherever the sea of Zemira takes us."
I found it really encapsulated the true essence of the finished story, now they were out of troubled water, they were free to live their lives as they would choose too, without fear of consequence or fear from an unjust society.
-and now that sea is taking me directly to the next book; King Elijah.

If you love pirates, going on an amazing adventure, love that grows and throws in some magic then this book is for you!!!
I might be a bit bias on this book as i love pirate stories and they hold a dear place in my heart, this book made me fall in love with pirate stories all over again. the way that you get thrown into a world that is having a moment that changes everything and you get to explore that world is astonishing. Nola is the MFC that we follow on her journey to save her land and its people but as well as find who she truly is. Nola is one of those badass MFC but also has a kind side that she doesn't want people to get hurt. This is refreshing as a lot of badass MFC are just pure hardcore until you find out.

Oh and that ending, I was hang on and hoping that everything was going to work out, which I am a very happy about the ending!!!

This story was well written and I am happy to say I would buy it as soon as I can. It is a standalone at the moment but I wont mind reading another adventure with this amazing crew!!!

Flaming feathers folks! Blade hit the motherload with this extraordinary tilt-our-world tsunami, walking the walk and talking the talk, propelling this jewel to staggering heights. Swapping hats and switching tactics with this incredibly tumultuous rollercoaster, weaving a cocoon so intricately and precise, luring you deeper into this tangled web, observing the perilous struggles and challenging triumphs, while attentive to the deadly twists and unbelievable turns unfolding, secrets are disclosed, revelations unmasked and promises pledged, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. The characters are complex, genuine and realistic with traits and qualities that balance and blend, with amazing depth and diversity and with enough spice to add an extra kick to the mix. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that bend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Amazing job Blade, thanks for sharing this awesome little gem with us.

This features a kingdom ruled by a hateful king who has obliterated all magic, except for what is bound to his crown. Even to the detriment to his own family. Nola, a land-bound siren found and adopted by humans, is desperate to find a way to stop him. Her journey leads her to team up with Captain Lincoln, a dashing pirate who agrees to take her across the treacherous Sea to the Fae and Elven Kingdom to gather allies.

This read was quite fun, particularly because of the pirate element intertwined with the magical fae. I enjoyed the adventure and the unique blend of elements, which kept the story intriguing. I did not really see that twist coming, either.

However, I did struggle with connecting fully to the characters. Events sometimes unfolded too quickly or off-screen, which lessened their emotional impact. It felt like the plot moved forward more out of necessity than organically at times. Despite these very minor issues, I still had a great time reading it. The imaginative setting and the romance between a (secret) siren and a pirate were engaging. It kept me entertained throughout.

Highly recommend for those who love pirates!

~2.5 stars~

This wasn’t a bad book, but it was pretty strange. The beginning was slow, and I didn’t have any interest in the book until I was about a third of the way through. There was just so much exposition and background information, it didn’t feel like the story truly began for quite a while. Nonetheless, the plot was moderately exciting when it got going. I loved the chemistry between Lincoln and Nola and their instant attraction for one another. Lincoln did disappoint me at parts—how he initially reacted to Nola on the ship and his actions near the story’s end—but he was still a romantic, intense hero.

The side characters weren’t particularly noteworthy, and I found the constant switches between their pirate and given names somewhat jarring. The jumps in time, setting, and POV were confusing as well. They made the plot difficult to follow, and I felt emotionally distant from the characters overall. There were some good action scenes though and a few shocking, suspenseful moments.

In summary, this book was okay, but not quite worth the time investment to read the full novel. I’d recommend it to someone with extra time on their hands who loves mythical characters and is okay with a slower storyline.

The Sea of Zemira is the first book in the Zemria Chronicles centered around a crew of pirates fighting to uncover treasure and truths in their world ruled by a corrupt king.

The storyline was easy to follow for an intense magic system. The problem was the elements that made up the plot needed to flow together. This is primarily due to the head-hoping from paragraph to paragraph without notice. Another issue with the plot was that the scenes of conflict and struggle were always seamlessly resolved on the same page.

I did enjoy all the characters, and their personalities felt unique. Though I do not have a problem with it, this book is an instant-love romance.

The summary of this book pulled me in immediately, but sadly, it fell just a tad flat for me.

It's a good book.
Imaginative and extensive worldbuilding.
But, I have to say that about halfway through the story lost me a bit. I felt that there was too much going on, and the sudden timetravel plot near the end felt a bit out of left field for me. I felt a bit meh about the main characters and their romance.

The way things ended, I am curious to see where things go in the Kingdom in the next book.

I hadn't read a book in forever but i saw this story pop up on Amazon ads and since I love pirates, I had to check it out. I loved the adventure! The crew was fun and hilarious at times. The captain was one of favorite characters and each adventure they went on held my attention until the very last chapter. If you love fairies, mermaids, pirates, and lots of adventure, you will enjoy this read.

An epic tale across the high seas! I really enjoyed following Nola and the other characters as they navigate from land and sea. The story takes you on an adventure to different areas and brings a unique approach to each one. The main characters were love able and so were many of the supporting characters. This also wrapped up Nola’s tale pretty nicely while also leaving a door open for another book.
