Втората част от поредицата за великата кралица Изабел I Кастилска е написана от различен автор и това си личи. Както вече споменах в коментара си за първата част от поредицата, това са книги по сериал. Но докато първата част е написана от сценариста Хавиер Оливарес, то втората „Апогеят на властта“ е от Мартин Маурел. И тук разликите не свършват.
Много ми беше странна приумицата втората част да се пише в сегашно време. Първата е написана в стандартното минало време и изведнъж – по средата на поредицата, защото книгите са три, макар у нас да са издадени само две – времето се сменя на сегашно, с нов автор. Отнема известно време, докато посвикнеш с новия наратив. Но пък, при положение че романът е от 600 страници, имаш достатъчно време да свикнеш.
Това обаче е един малък недостатък, на фона на прекрасно разказаната сюжетна линия. Както беше и в първата част, сценаристите се придържат строго към историческата линия и дати, но ги доукрасяват сладкодумно и с финес. С нищо не е прекалено, няма преекспониране. Действието се развива толкова бързо, че отгръщаш страница след страница неусетно. А такива книги са точно по моя вкус. Колкото и да са обемни, се четат бързо и леко, историята те грабва изведнъж и не те пуска до последната страница.
Ако трябва да сравнявам коя от двете части ми е била по-интересна, ще ми бъде трудно, но все пак ще кажа втората. Това е времето на същинското царуване на Изабел Кастилска и нейният съпруг Фернандо Арагонски. Изабел се разкъсва между укрепване на властта си, след сядането на престола, следват няколко последователни тежки раждания, дворцови интриги, изневерите на Фернандо, военни действия с Португалия и Гранада, както и недоволство срещу евреите. От днешна гледна точка проличава как не е била права за въвеждането на Светата Инквизиция в Кастилия и Арагон, но тогава това е било лост за „премахване на ереста“ и налагането на католицизма, както и за справяне с постоянните метежи срещу евреите.
Съжалявам единствено, че третата част от поредицата, в която е описан краят в управлението и живота на Изабел, не е издадена на български.

Y llegó la segunda parte... Javier Olivares cede la estafeta sin quererlo ni pedirlo a Martín Maurel como escritor y apoyo en el guión de la segunda temporada de la serie televisiva. Pero la escritura no desmerece. La continuación de la historia de Isabel de Castilla al frente de una España aprisionada entre la soberbia de los nobles, la ambición de su sobrina Juana y sus aliados portugueses, la necesidad de expulsar a los moros de la península y por si fuera poco, las infidelidades de su alegre marido Fernando de Aragón. También vemos a una Isabel obsesionada con la fe católica que la lleva a tomar dos decisiones determinantes para marcar a su reinado y a la historia del mundo: la instauración del Tribunal de la Santa Inquisición y apoyar a un visionario marino genovés, ansioso por descubrir nuevas rutas a las indias a cambio de catequizar a los infieles y nativos... Ah! si... y también enriquecer las arcas del reino que financie el viaje. Una vez más, sin pretensión de erudiciones ni doctorarse en historia, nos absorbe la lectura para hacernos soñar con el mundo de la España Medieval.

Isabel II: La Conquista del Poder

Isabel II, por donde comenzar, primero que todo creo que es importante mencionar que este libro es el segundo libro de una saga, y para que me entiendan por completo necesitan saber que el primer libro se robo mi corazón. El primer libro me encanto! Fue un libro lleno de sentimientos, que me envolvió hasta la última página y esto tal vez creó demasiadas expectativas para el segundo libro.

Calificacion:
Siendo 100% honesta este libro me gusto pero no se acercó a encantarme por diferentes razones. Para empezar, creo que Isabel durante este libro perdio la esencia de quien era ella en verdad, pasó de ser fuerte y generosa, a ser fuerte y más de una vez desconsiderada. Este libro como lo dice el nombre se trata de conquistas, y esto es algo sumamente interesante pero puede llegar a cansar si todo el libro esta basado en eso. Si el corazón del libro son siempre las conquistas lentamente el lector va perdiendo el interes en mi opinión. En general le daría a este libro 3 estrellas, me pareció una buena experiencia leerlo ya que era el segundo libro de la saga y me ayudó a entender la vida de Isabel una vez ella y Fernando estaban creciendo el Reino de Castilla, pero no me pareció un libro excelente o que quisiera volver a leer. Este libro también es largo en paginas, lo cual solo tiene que hacer que la calidad crezca para poder hacer que valga la pena, y este requisito creo que no fue alcanzado por completo.

Pequeño Resumen:
Este libro es la historia de Isabel de Castilla una vez alcanzó rompiendo todas las probabilidades; ser reina. La vida de Isabel como reina esta llena de retos, ella tiene claro que quiere expandir Castilla pero hacerlo no es un reto fácil, para comenzar su prima Juana trata de hacerle la vida imposible. Juana, la legítima hija del rey Enrique reclama su trono y acusa a Isabel de usurpadora. Esta batalla que tiene Isabel para proteger su lugar no es fácil, ya que Juana consigue a Carrillo y a Portugal como aliados en su batalla para que ayuden a crear infamia. La lucha que tiene Isabel para mantener su trono es larga; pero cuando la madre de Juana muere, Juana se debilita y Isabel consigue mover excepcionalmente sus piezas. Una vez Isabel consigue quedarse en el lugar que le pertenece otro reto llega a su vida, el cual es darle un heredero a Castilla. Isabel ya había tenido a su hija primogénita pero necesitaba darle a Castilla un futuro asegurado, con un hombre. Isabel pasa por una larga y triste aventura donde pierde a un hijo que ella estaba esperando. Tener un hombre no estaba siendo sencillo para Isabel, por lo cual ella trata todo lo posible por darle un heredero a Castilla. (Mi opinión personal es que en esta parte ella estaba siendo hipócrita, ya que en el libro pasado ella luchó por su derecho de ser Reina de Castilla como mujer, y en este libro ella no considero a sus hijas con ese derecho) A lo largo del libro ella logra tener un hijo hombre, al cual le llaman Juan ya que ese era nombre del fallecido padre de Fernando. Fernando e Isabel también sufren muchos retos a lo largo del camino, la magia que tenían en el primer libro, en mi opinión, la perdieron. Pero no puedo negar que su relación como reyes sigue siendo ejemplar ya que siempre se apoyaron hasta en los momentos difíciles y los dos se complementaban para tomar las decisiones correctas. Isabel luego tiene más hijas, y la historia continúa hasta con retos inimaginables. Juan, el único heredero de Castilla y Aragón por poco muere debido a una seria enfermedad, e Isabel la hija primogénita pierde a su querido esposo el cual ella amaba profundamente. Como todos sabemos, el drama es algo que no falta en este libro. Y una de las partes más importantes es la batalla entre Castilla y el reino Islam. Estos dos reinos sufren de sobremanera ya que la guerra es dura y no estan dispuestos a rendirse. Isabel tiene la misión de evangelizar todo lo que pueda, y con este propósito en mente ella da hasta la última gota de sudor por convertir a los infieles, aceptando tener que hacer cosas en las que ella no cree como por ejemplo tener cautivo al hijo pequeño de Boabdil. Boabdil trata de resistirse, pero Castilla le hace jaque mate y no tiene más opción que rendirse. Esta batalla es bastante larga ya que el poder no es algo permanente y Aixa pone muchos obstaculos para todos. Y para terminar quiero concluir con uno de los momentos claves, el cual es el ofrecimiento de la aventura de Cristobal Colón. Isabel le creía plenamente y confiaba en su proyecto, por lo cual decide financiarlo viendo como una gran oportunidad evangelizar a todas las nuevas tierras. El libro termina con el inicio de ese viaje inesperado…

Persona ideal para este libro:
Como ya mencione antes este libro es un compromiso, ya que de por sí es largo, y para leerlo idealmente deberías de leer para comenzar el primer libro. Teniendo en cuenta estos hechos, la lista de las personas que califican se disminuye bastante. Este libro es para alguien apasionado por la historia de Isabel, que le llame la atención la historia del Reino de Castilla, y repito otra vez que haya idealmente leído el primer libro. Creo que leer el primer libro es algo sumamente importante para poder entender este libro, haber leído el primero solo hizo este libro más interesante ya que de ver cómo le costó llegar al trono pude entender lo que hizo una vez ya estando en el trono, haber leído el primero te da contexto.

Aprendizajes:
Este libro me enseñó mucho, específicamente este libro me dio la oportunidad de realizar más claramente que cosas admiro de un libro y que cosas mejoraría. La manera en la que esta escrita me ayudó a aprender muchas cosas que quiero aplicar en mis siguientes trabajos, y el vocavulario era batsante avanzado y extenso lo cual me permitio crecer mucho durante la lectura.

El autor cuenta la historia de manera apasionante, esta muy bien escrito y logra unir en un mismo libro una historia de amor y de dos monarcas totalmente diferentes con sus respectivos reinos a cargo.

I'VE NEVER BEEN SO ANNOYED WITH HISTORICAL CHARACTERS MORE THAN NOW.

The book itself was genius, adorably written that allowed me to know what went on in Europe from people of all backgrounds, the greed of Portugal and Spain, the injustice suffered by the Muslim and Jewish, and how monarchs didn't give a shit about their people as about their own hypocritical faith, together with the Catholic church, obviously. I mean I could side with many in here, starting with poor little Juana who suffered a lot because of her mother, aunt and uncle, she was the one who wanted nothing then wanted what was rightfully hers until she was what everyone wanted her to be just that it wasn't enough nor right at the time she became that. This girl had the courage her father lacked and the rightful claim her aunt lacked. I mean, Isabel only wanted the throne, the power, as she with her ludicrous husband said "Castile would be better with murderers but not with the infidel", that quote made my assumptions true since it proved they didn't care about the people but about their own fanatism as with their selfish greed, it was such a hypocrite move coming from them: the Queen who changed her mind about what was right according to her faith and what Catholic representative knocked her door that day, and a King who cared only for glory and his own conquests more than anything, stepping above his own daughter's happiness to meet his ideal future. There's where I found another victim of their treachery, the Infanta Isabel who was treated poorly by both her parents and found true love in her duty only for it to be shattered by Ferdinand's selfish murder. Then was the whole Inquisition move that made me want to strip myself of my Spanish last name because Holy Christ! So much intolerance and hatred, unchristian stuff but these people actually believed murder and torture was an excuse to give them infidels to Christ, I was horrified by the treatment to the Jewish community, what's to come to the Muslims and what even those converted to the "true" faith, it was murder, it was horrible and just unfair. It was just a wish to hurt others and I was left feeling impotent for all those who were damaged by these fanatics. RIP to those poor souls.

Es un buen libro, por momentos el autor romantiza la historia de forma abusiva para lograr su narración y creo que el libro pudo haberse resumido un poco sin que eso significara eliminar acontecimientos históricos de importancia. 680 páginas para el periodo que se abarca me parecieron excesivas.

The second in an over-long trilogy of historical novels (the first almost 600 pages, the second two almost 700 each) on the life of Isabel (Isabella) I of Spain. The books are novelisations of the recent successful Spanish historical drama series, although, having not seen the TV version (yet), I can't comment on how close the novels are to the screenplay. I imagine there's more in the novels.

First things first - after enjoying the first book in the series, I was initially quite disappointed with this second book. For a start, it has a different author from the first book, so the style is different - notably a switch to present-tense narration, whereas the first book was in standard past tense. I'm not saying that present tense can't work, but really threw me that the narrative approach was shifted mid-series. Why do that?? However, after a while, I got used to it and settled into the book.

Overall, it is a well-told story - this book roughly taking us from the beginning of Isabel's reign (and that of her husband Fernando/Ferdinand) to the defeat of the last Moorish outpost in Granada, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and the decision to finance Columbus's expedition, all within a few months of each other in 1492.

However, at times it feels over-meticulous, interminable even, plodding perhaps. Time moves so slowly and every little development and conversation are relayed in detail. Rarely do we even skip a month or two.

That said, the slow pace helps demonstrate how the politics of the period and, in particular, Isabel's political style and priorities and religious views develop over time, such that the events of 1492 can be understood (though naturally not excused or justified) in their context.

Retelling Isabel's life, with her as lead character, poses a major challenge for any novelist. She was without doubt a religious fanatic, from today's viewpoint, and history would be right to condemn her for her acts of great bigotry and cruelty.

I liked the fact that this book did not attempt to whitewash her reputation and it frequently portrayed her in a harsh light. That said, hers was a rounded character, with many sympathetic aspects - not least her focus on duty and her struggles to reign as a woman in her own right. Her relationship with her husband was somewhat over-romanticised, though not without its prickly patches, but that's par for the course, I guess.

Overall, i wish it had been edited down by 100-200 pages but I'm glad I read it and will certainly get round to reading the final book in the trilogy at some point.

Genial libro. Salvo ciertas omisiones y equivocos, en general es una novela muy bien escrita de ficción histórica que humaniza a los personajes históricos sobremanera. Bien harían otras escritoras como Hilary Mantel y Phillippa Gregory en aprenderle algo a Maurel de narrativa.
