An impressively expansive world just getting started. I knocked out Icarus Book 1 in a day. I really enjoyed the culture and world history event references of my generation, as well as the author’s experience in the USAF lending themselves to the tapestry of a SciFi epic.
I was a little disappointed with how quickly the romance unfolded. It felt like gaps in relationship building and character development took place to bring us to the (well written) smutty scenes, a bit prematurely. I would have liked a slower burn, and more independent growth of the protagonist and love interest before just diving in. I didn’t feel as invested in their relationship, given some of the quick immature and inappropriate interaction early on that felt unrealistic, even in the sci-fi future.
There were more than handful of grammatical errors and typos that made reading a bit distracted, having to retrace my steps to make sure I comprehended a situation or phrase, but not so much that I didn’t enjoy the overall premise. I’m interested to see how this universe and the author develop in the next book.
Great read. Was on edge of my seat a few times with suspense. Amazing job with character development while leaving you wanting more. Great start to blooming/sexy relationship. Can't wait for book 2.
Really enjoyed reading my ARC! The characters were all super likable and I found myself rooting for everyone! The book kept you guessing, just when you thought things were steady the book would take another turn. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
The story was pretty good. One of the reasons for the four stars is so many typos and incorrect punctuation and other errors. I had to do so many more in this story than I usually find. Need a better proofreader!
This is a science fiction fantasy that features several powerful characters. The story offers friendship and a small amount of the slow-burn romance subgenre. After being frozen for a long period of time, our main character, Kara, awakens with amnesia. Her last memory was of a late-night party, so she has no idea how she got to a new location with so many new people. She doesn't know who to believe because it seems like everyone is watching her closely in order to get information from her. Then there is Pyke, the male protagonist. I like the chemistry between Kara and Pyke. Despite the fact that they fell in love a little too quickly given their lack of prior interaction, their relationship dynamics were smooth. I am looking forward to reading Yi and Roth's story now.
It will be a puzzle for readers to figure out what exactly happened to Kara. What sort of location is ICARUS? Where are the others? And how did she actually end up being frozen for so many years in a
For fans of science fiction with a dash of romance and spice, ICARUS is the ideal story. Apart from the major characters, even the supporting or side characters were portrayed as powerful, and despite the fact that they are unrelated, they have a close-knit family dynamic, thus the concept of the "found family" that I described earlier.
Futuristic and brilliant. I could easily see this becoming a TV series or movie. The writing style is so descriptive, I felt like I was on the ship with the crew. Not too technical to bog down the story, I enjoyed entering this world.
Kara is in the military, floating through life, trying to stay under the radar so her father and brother don't have any reason to look her way. After an incident with her father leaves her hospitalized, she decides to take up an offer for an experimental mission.
A team of scientists aboard the ship Icarus are looking for anything viable from a failed cryogenic experiment done in the past. They finally find one - Kara - from 700 years ago.
As Kara spends time on the Icarus, she tries to reconcile the fact that she has no memory of the cryogenic program at all. So what happened all those years ago? She joins the crew as they try to figure out what the objective was of the original mission... and why Kara was the only survivor.
This book is absolutely phenomenal! I was totally immersed in the story. Just amazing!
Amazing ideas and a world I loved entering into. Navigated the trickiness of future/time travel believably and without too much overwhelming technology. Some of the scenes in the second half had me gripped with suspense, really great moments developed at times and the characters are all extremely likeable The first half felt a bit quick but once the second half set in the flow of events felt more comfortable. I hope to see more world building in the next installations! While the main characters are very exciting, the world around them feels very desolate at times and I think adding more people might help. I can, however, tell this author has a whole lot more to share with us if we are patient enough to wait for #2. Congrats on a successful first novel Wells!
I'm really happy to have received an ARC of this book. Kara is awakened 700 years in the future with no memory of the experiments that left her genetically modified and cryogenically frozen. She's taken in by a group of soldiers who become as invested in the mystery of her past as she is, including Pyke, a man who's increasingly drawn to her as the story progresses.
There's military action, science fiction, and VERY steamy romance. The characters are well developed, as is the central relationship. Beyond that, the novel incorporates themes of trauma and sexuality that I found particularly engaging. Looking forward to the next one!
This is a captivating start to The Genome Chronicles series, blending science fiction, romance, and a dash of mystery into a tale that soars among the stars. The story of Kara Giddings, a resilient Air Force specialist escaping her past, and Colonel Pyke Havard, a commanding figure on a mission to uncover humanity's forgotten secrets, is compelling and emotionally charged. Wells masterfully crafts a world where love transcends time and space, with vivid world-building and well-drawn characters that make the journey feel real and immersive.
What an amazing debut. All I can say is, can we get the next book please!
As a science nerd and love for romance novels, this novel was very hard to put down. The creativity of the writing makes the book very easy to picture what is happening. I am a reader that likes to picture the scenes and I could see the events play out like I was watching a series.
As I write this at 1 am, I am so excited for the next journey!
I really loved Icarus! Kara’s struggles at the beginning of the story had me rooting for her right away, and I loved seeing her story unfold. Kara and Pyke’s romance is so sweet and heartwarming and I was cheering for them the whole time. The ending has several twists and cliffhangers that left me excited for the second book! Also, I really loved the narrator. She was easy to listen to and brought the characters and emotions to life perfectly.
Debut novel for author Natasha Wells 👏🏽 I typically choose fantasy over Sci-Fi, but the elements of the book were digestible no matter what you’re into. The characters were immediately likable and you couldn’t help but root for Kara. Excited to see what happens next and who really is the bad guy 👀
The cover caught my eye I always love a Future fantasy outer space book. There was a few things I wasn't a big fan of. II didn't like that there was no other life in space no space battles and of course the brother.
Sci-fi, romance, mystery… This book has a lot going on! I really enjoyed this book! The story is futuristic without being overtly crazy. It feels like it could really happen in a couple hundred years. The characters were easy to connect with and I love all of them. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!
