I read this because it fits in a category I am following, school-based horror manga. This one features a school and then town that is suddenly mostly zombies. Doesn't matter why or how. The arc of the first volume is unsurprising, moving from Act 1, Spring of the Dead, to Act 2, Escape from the Dead, to Democracy of the Dead (i.e., the plague kills everyone equally, the rich and the poor, the beautiful and the plain, and so on).

"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."--Hemingway

Well, this doesn't pretend to be Hemingway-level literary, trust me. High School of the Dead is manic action storytelling done with some skill. It will satisfy, if you have it, one's gore lust; and speaking of lust, this manga, written for primarily teen boys, maybe, features something I notice somewhat differently now that I have been reading and teaching graphic novels with a focus on kick-ass girl characters: In the midst of all this mayhem, we (must) see lots of skin, schoolgirls in the tiniest of pleated skirts, seen from the ground up from time to time, or just with skirt flying so we can see full legs and underwear, and there's also a couple fifteen year old girls carrying Elvira-sized breasts throughout.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvira,...

This manga came out in Japan more than a decade ago; it is hard to know whether the girls might be depicted differently today. Elvira is a relevant "figure" here in that ridiculous body types are part of pulp horror across the ages. The lily-white necks of such girls being devoured by grotesque zombies prefigures monster porn as humorous kitsch. The combination of terror and lust and humor are of course, forever part of formative movie-going and book-reading experiences for young people.

Oh, the boys are all to-die-for gorgeous, too, of course. Yes, there's that sort of democracy going on, don't you worry. To be sure, both good-looking girls and boys die here. The beautiful and the grotesque go hand in hand in teen disaster stories. So, given, the genre, High School of the Dead in its first volume satisfies expectations for being pretty amusing, and being technically well done, which is to say sexy enough, and satisfyingly gory, keeping the bloody nubile teen bodies coming, part of a long manga tradition.

No...just no.

Why was there so many up-skirt shots of high school girls? Did we really need to see that?

I'm not sure where to begin with this. So the premise is basically a zombie apocalypse that centers around some high schoolers and the school nurse trying to survive. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of zombies but I thought I'd try this anyways.

*rubs temples*

The story line wasn't the best but it wasn't horrible. What was horrible were the characters. The girls in this manga were beyond ridiculous. I literally couldn't concentrate because of their obnoxiously large boobs bouncing around and the constant flashes of panties. Ok, so I get that this manga is geared towards male teenagers but REALLY?

I LOVE THIS MANGA!!!
Okay...gore check
Awesome fight scenes...check
Amazing characters...check
Zombies...check
Awesome story line..check

Honestly I found this on a whim at the bookstore under the mature section, and snatched it up. Sadly I should've bought the 2nd one while I was at it.
But hell this manga was so much fun to read, the artwork was beautiful to look at, and none of the characters annoyed me. So I'm satisfied and perfectly content with this series. I kind of got sick of the ever lasting manga that will never stop..like Naruto and/or Bleach.

Out of the wake of the zombie hype, those wishing to read this must bare in mind that this series has alot of weaknesses
-the first being it's fan-service, which often comes off as manipulative and/or disgusting (unless your into tits with the consistency of icing bags or bagged milk)
-the characters are despicable, tho some chemistry may arise, but the lead is just an asshole, his childhood friend leaves their moral a leg short, the swordsmen chick, though one of the best characters falls victim to being the fan-service ice queen
-the characters also fall victim to being hollow stereotypes, and not just the cast, but the supporting characters as well
It's biggest foot forward has to be the gore and zombie killing, sure theres fanservice shots there as well, but you actually feel these character's struggle in this otherwise daydream of a 'what if my school were to suddenly be infested with zombies and instead of writing a test, I can use my cunning and leadership skills to get my friends to a safe zone' scenario

I would recommend this to young boys in their early to mid teens, but in all honesty, the anime works better more for it's pace. Either watch the anime or read the walking dead

Wow this was literal trash.

Every wanted to read a zombie story with tons of panties shots and no redeeming characters? Welcome to Highschool of the Dead.

Zombie genre is over-saturated to begin with. So if you coming to try it you better be unique or at least fun. This is neither. This is generic zombie tale in school. Every single character is annoying, cry baby, or just a brute. There's no different. Every girl is weak and fragile save for a sword user. Oh and don't worry about plot or character development, you get the panty shots you've been wanting. One after another. All the same type of stripped panties with girls of all the same over dramatically skinny and sexually charged poses.

This wouldn't be so bad if the story was decent. Or we had decent characters. But neither is here.

I guess the art is okay? Blah. Fuck this series.

This review is for the whole series rather than just this issue (saves me having to write six of these) but overall I thought this series was alright.

The highlights in my opinion were that there were plenty of zombies (so if you came to the series for that then you won't be disappointed) as well as gore and hyper-kinectic fights (as well as an astonishing level of attention to detail when it comes to technical details of things such as firearms and economics). There are also quite a few interesting character moments and they do make sure that you like the heroes and want the villains to die in a fire (something that's very easy to get wrong).

The low points in my opinion were that there can be a lot of 'mood whiplash', a very serious and sad scene will be followed up almost immediately with breaking the 4th wall comedy or cheesecake shots (you could make a drinking game out of the number of panty shots there are), this brings me onto the fanservice. If you don't mind or enjoy fanservice then you'll probably be fine with this comic, if it's the sort of thing that bothers you then you'll probably find this to be an awkward read since they layer it on pretty damn thick (it seemed a bit weird to me that no-one in our main cast has a bra size under DD, remember that these are also meant to be High School students), it's taken to ridiculous extremes with the Nurse who's titanic breasts are the source of several jokes (and not one of them about back pain).

Most bothersome of the fanservice is a group bathing scene which comes completely the fuck out of nowhere, we go from the survivors showing relief and happiness at the end of one issue and go right onto all the girls together, naked in a steamy bathroom at the beginning of the next with no real explanation or introduction as to why (other than to get naked chicks soaping up each other's breasts into the comic of course).

The story also has a habit of getting somewhat melodramatic with a lot of lamenting about how 'the world will never be the same again' and other such things and it just began to drone on after a while (I also have to mention that the previous mood whiplash even applied to characters who frequently go from being moody and miserable to being happy and bubbley again in the space of a single panel).

Overall, this isn't a bad series by any extent but by the same token I wouldn't say it overly wonderful or brilliant. It's enjoyable but otherwise not remarkable.

Synopsis:

A mysterious illness is spreading rapidly through the halls of Fujimi High School. In a matter of hours, the campus is transformed from a place of learning into a hive of nightmares, as the infected students collapse and are reborn as flesh-hungry zombies! Only a handful of students escape the initial outbreak - among them Takashi Komuro and his childhood friend, Rei. He manages to protect Rei from the initial onslaught, but how long can Takashi and the other students hope to survive when the whole school - maybe the whole town - is out for their blood?!

My Thoughts:

The world has gone to hell in a handbasket. Zombies are all over the place and students find themselves having to bash in the heads of friends and teachers. One bite and it's all over for you!

A group of survivors in Fujimi Highschool manage to band together to get out by bus, but can they get out of this alive? Where can they go, anyway? The entire world is fucked up over this outbreak. Can they all even put up with each other long enough to not be eaten? So far, the initial group is working together quite well, but they've got some new additions along, one of which seems like a real asshole.

Now, Takashi and Rei are on their own trying to make their way to the precinct where her father works. The ones on the bus are attempting to meet them their as well. Can the two of them get there in time?

The style of manga was a bit sloppy? for me, didn't flow as nicely as others I've read. The story, too, was a bit of a miss. I didn't love the character development, how Takashi goes to get Rei out of class but tells her then bf not for him to follow...? If you really believe mass murders are happening for whatever reason, why tell someone not to follow? Pretty shitty on his behalf, made me dislike the character immediately. The rest of the characters lacked any sort of development, maybe it will happen in the next volumes but I won't know cause I don't think I'll be purchases anymore.

Zzz. Boring. Generic plot about zombies told in a cluster-fuck of random scenes of violence. I guess it was supposed to be cool, but after seeing six billion mediocre pictures of zombies being bludgeon, I'd had enough. I'm all for zombies and violence, but this was boring. It shouldn't be boring. No characters, no progression, just zombies getting whacked on the head. If you're into that I'm sure this is cool. If you want something that isn't the same story that's been done a million times, then avoid.

I think this book seals it for me. I'm over YA dystopias where only teens have the answer, that with minor exceptions, I do not like ultraviolent manga and that I'm SO over zombie plagues. I should say though that those factors are the reason for the low rating. If you like YA dystopias or zombies, you might enjoy it since the story, at least, is sound.

A strange man shows up at the gates of Fujimi high school and attacks some of the staff. One bite and you're dead and infected. Needless to say, most of the school is infected quickly. In the long act I, you meet Takashi, the narrator, and his long time friend, Rei who has left him for a mutual friend, Hisashi. They along with a few others do make it to isolation, but not all of them have made it unbitten, leaving them with tough choices. The police can not be contacted due to a flood of calls, including Rei's father who is on the force.

Act 2 brings more characters, Shizuka, the ridiculously big-boobed school nurse (and about the only adult), Saeko, the captain of the kendo club (and about the one girl who is actively slicing and dicing zombies) Kouta, the out of shape school geek and Saya, girl super genius. All of them team up with Takashi and Rei to bust out of the school and get to the school bus to try to get to town (even though reports from around the world show everywhere is in a zombie apocalypse.) They also pick up a few more nameless students and one cold bastard (I'm not sure if he's a senior or a teacher).

Act 3 brings rebellion on the school bus and is much shorter than the other two acts. Honestly, the story line is solid and the art is good if you don't mind the constant up-skirt shots or button-straining boobs. At least Saeko is drawn like an actual girl and is good for more than falling down screaming (actually Rei and Saya aren't too bad but they're not the badass Saeko is). It's just not my type of story.

I hated this and loved this at the same time. I had always wanted a zombie manga/book that revolves on teenagers and how they would cope when they're attacked with hardly, if there will be any, adult help. And Highschool of the Dead did just this. It has the right amount of action, character development (although a bit slow), and realistic psychological reactions to certain situations to get you hooked.

But this is obviously for the male audience because there is WAY too many ecchi in it. Oh yeah, I expected sex to crop up sometime because hey, they're healthy young people and they might as well do it before they die. It's just that, has it ever occurred to them that they might get one of them pregnant? What will happen then? The pregnant girl will get in the way. And I sincerely doubt our male lead would be the type to abandon her even if it's for the sake of the rest of the team. They could at least use contraceptives but I have seen nothing to imply that.

So, too much ecchi. Otherwise, a really good addition to zombie literature.

Wait, I almost forgot to add... I LOVE KENDO GIRLS!!!

If you love the walking dead because of the gore, zombie killings and fan service then this is the manga for you. I first was introduced to this manga by watching the first season of the anime and i was hooked. Be warned i feel like this is the r rated version of the walking dead [Mature themes that may be uncomfortable to watch/read].

I'm still waiting for season 2 anime wise T-T

I actually watched the anime first. I buy the manga really because I collect it but I love reading it.

I loved the story. I am all for the violence and ecchi. Sometimes it is nice to read something straight forward and full of action. I definitely don't regret spending money on the books. Even as a straight girl, I am not bothered by all of the overly large breasts and panty shots. It is all just a fun read for me.

I love the story line and all of the characters. I am able to read it multiple times and I still find it funny and enjoyable. I'm also a fan of the artwork itself. I can understand most of the criticisms as most of them are valid. But I personally love it to pieces and I want to see more like it.

I discovered this manga a few years back. At first, I wasn't very interested because it didn't seem like a manga that would ever be finished, so I forgot about it over time. When I saw it published in English at my local book store, I was quite surprised and picked it up. I have to say it was money well spent.

This isn't for those who dislike fanservice. I don't personally mind it and think that it's called for in this instance. Boobs, boobs, and more boobs.

If you enjoy American zombie movies, this is a great read for you. If you're looking for something more serious and thought provoking, it might be best to look elsewhere unless you're willing to dig deep.

I watched this anime a few years ago and really enjoyed it, so I've been looking forward to the manga for a while. The manga is okay... and so far, that's really just it. Much like with Trigun, I'm having a hard time deciphering who is talking sometimes, which makes it slightly hard to follow. And because of the confusion I had through most of the volume, that is why I'm giving it a lower star rating.

Well, that and the obnoxious panty shots and all girls having giant boobs... but I knew that was a thing due to the anime. And I know it's only going to get worse from here -_- Oh Japan...

We'll see how it goes for volume 2.

I checked out the 1st 4 volumes of this from the SPL. I wanted to get into it, since I had heard that the anime was really good. The anime version has been recommended to me several times. So, I gave the manga a chance. But, honestly, I could not get into this at all, and dropped it almost immediately. I didn't even finish the first chapter.
The art is decent at best, and the storyline is stupid and unbelievable. I will be adding this series to my *Will NOT Read* list, as it just is NOT for me.

Zum Inhalt:
Achtung: Infektionsgefahr!

Zumindest in meinen Augen.

I've read the entire H.O.T.D series and watched ( and re watched ) the anime series and found it to be a fantastic manga! I've been trying to find out when the next installment will be seeing as act 30 was released on April 10th 2013. As for the "up tbe skirt" statement, the reason for it is the artist shoji sato ( the authors brother) is also a hentai artist for a company called digital accel works. kind of a project bridge I guess. lol

I've been meaning to read this for the longest time. I first saw the anime and thought 'I just have to read the manga for this'. After doing so I bookmarked it as to read then forgot about it. I recently found it free to read and delved in today. The artwork is quite nicely drawn and the characters are actually somewhat realistic. This volume just had me on my toes from how great it was.

A gory and violent zombie-themed horror manga with an interesting cast of characters! I originally watched the short anime series and LOVED it. The manga is just as good, with a close eye kept on the inner workings of human nature once the societal constraints of public decorum are lifted.

The art, the characters, the plot and the paneling are all amazing. The pacing and rhythm are a bit odd, not bad, just odd but everything else was great.

I'm a bit sad knowing that this story will never be finished but I'm still going to give it a go. Great story and an awesome manga.
