David A. Servant

When David Servant read the results of his high-school vocational aptitude test, he laughed. The results told him that he was best suited for a career in ministry or in entertainment. At the time, David's future goal was to live in a log cabin in the wilderness and live off the land for the rest of his life.

The Lord, however, had different plans for David Servant. God didn't intend for him to run away from the world, but rather to play a part in changing the world--by building God's kingdom. David received his call to ministry during his (reluctant) freshman year at Penn State, and one year later was enrolled in Bible School.

Upon graduation, David and his new bride, Becky, pioneered their first church in David's hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That was more than thirty years ago.

Over the years, David and Becky Servant pioneered and pastored three churches, all three of which were very missions-oriented. David often traveled internationally to teach in pastors' conferences, during which time he developed numerous ministry friends in scores of developing nations.

When David was serving at his third pastorate, Jesus' words in Matthew 25--the foretelling of the future judgment of the sheep and the goats--caught his heart, and that birthed a transformation in his ministry. Heaven's Family was the result, launched in 2002.

David Servant is the author of eight books, including Forever Rich, and the The Disciple-Making Minister, a 500-page equipping manual that has been translated into more than 20 languages and is being distributed to tens of thousands of pastors.

David and Becky have been married for 32 years. They have three grown children and one grandchild.

I won a copy of this book as a Goodreads First Reads Giveaway. Thanks for the copy!. This book is a daily devotional that guides the reader through the entire New Testament one day at a time. At an average reading pace, the reader should be able to read and digest each daily selection in approximately 3 minutes. Not bad! This book itself does not include the biblical text, but rather denotes which passage the reader should read for that day and then presents an accompanying insightful reflection on the scripture. A great book for those who may struggle with finding the time to maintain consistency in reading scripture or for those who just need a little structure and encouragement in their own reflective practice.

When I first started this, I really enjoyed it. There were some things that gave me some food for thought, and some things I was surprised to hear a Born-Again Christian say. The more time that went on, the less I enjoyed it. Mostly because I got tired of him bashing other religious beliefs (and that was before he attacked mine -- which he actually only did a couple of times.) I feel that if you are going to teach about Christ and/or the scriptures -- teach about Christ and/or the scriptures. Don't try to explain why other people's beliefs are wrong. I can draw my own conclusions there.

I rounded up because there were some of his thoughts that I added to my scripture notes, but it isn't one I would highly recommend to my friends.

So helpful!

This was my first time reading The Bible. I'm not the smartest person out there so David's book really helped me to understand what I was reading. It gave me great perspective of the way things are in the world and made me look at my own life and decide that I needed to change the way I was living. I really feel like I'm becoming a better person because of my understanding of the Bible.

What a great book that doesn't bog down your already busy day. I love how quick and easy it is to get closer to God and have a short daily devotional. It's well written and relevant to my life right now. I love that I will also be able to read it year after year. I plan on putting it on my Xmas present list for others to share this great book!!

I found this guide a great way to work my way through the New Testament. The daily units fit in perfectly with my schedule and most days I could complete my Bible study in 15-20 minutes. Altogether a well written, enlightening piece of work with a few humorous moments for balance. Thank you, David Servant!

I am thoroughly enjoying this devotional, thru the new testament. Plus, as a bonus to the book, there is a website to supplement the book. I'm still reading the book, as I'm reading some each day. But, based on what I have read so far, I can recommend it.
