Visually, this book is top-notch. Levin illustrates her points with an enormous photographic display of celebrity examples from classic cinema to rappers. In fact, there's very little text to follow, which is my only real complaint. Fashion books are generally slammed by reviewers because they feature too much red-carpet and designer focus and not enough casual clothing, but what's the point of a fashion book if not to help levitate you into an interest in high fashion & bring a little glamour to your jeans days?
Apart from the photos, it's a pretty basic book, with the traditional "pick your celebrity style" (classic, boho, preppy, edgy) and follow along. The fashion is definitely geared towards 20s and 30s and current trends. This is a good pick for a casual browse for women of all ages, and deserves further inspection from a younger woman with a good clothing budget.
Another nicely organized style book - lots of celebrity photos, well laid-out so easy & fun to read. The section on Fashion Personalities was was helpful to identify personal style.
Take away what suits YOU- I for one, pay no attention to advice like: It's worth splurging on an evening gown (which you might wear a few times), but skimp on your budget for pants or jeans because "no one sees your bottom when you're sitting."
I also find their Must Haves amusing (although to be fair, most of the other books mention these too) - such as their Ultimate Classics: *A camel coat (beige washes many women out) *A tuxedo "can be utterly sexy" - (menswear shapes are not flattering on my figure) *Cocktail ring (I'll never think a "gobsmacker" is a must have.
Most style books get on my nerves but I actually really liked this one, not that I can afford a Chanel bag but it had some great ideas and inspiration.
there are a shit load of style makeover guides out there in the market, but trust me,this comes closest to making sense to the average girl.no BS.to the point.go get it...!!:)
One of the few style books that has practical advice that's also, I think, timeless. Sections: The Basics; Personal Style; Fabulous At Every Age; Celebrate Your Shape; Office Elegance; Evening Glam; Casual Chic; The Best Extras; Lingerie Essentials. I do wish the section on Personal Style had had more on where to get inspiration, different places to shop etc. Really liked that they addressed evolving your style as you age, it's the first book I've seen that does that. Lots of photos, and of women of different shapes/sizes/ethnicities which is great.
A good universal guide on how to use styles, cuts colors and fabrics in designing your fashion styles or for styling others, too. Fairly universal service but some fun or funny dated photos, too. I like the now and then comparison photos of the same style decades apart the best !
Time will tell about how this book was. Re-reading it was a trip, because there are so many explanations, examples and guides in this book that are timeless and relevant. I loved the breakdown of celebrity icons' styles, the great tips, and the personal style tips. This book really is a guide for those who may not otherwise be fashion-inclined. I only wish it had more advice on shopping for the pieces, and how to portray an image through your appearance (although it is touched upon). Harpar's Bazaar entered my radar from a Bravo show, this book has left a favorable impression on me, and it might have convinced me to subscribe. Time will tell how great the advice is in this book - but I have confidence in it!
A fabulous guide to classic American style. Great advice for keeping your wardrobe elegant at any age as well as specific details on how many of each item you should purchase. Showcases some gorgeous clothing and accessories from luxury lines, solid examples of what to spend your money on. They also use celebrities and fashion icons, past and present to illustrate specific styles. Also offers tactical advice on behavior when shopping for both those with a large budget and those who are cost aware. Recommended for any lady with an interest in making her wardrobe more elegant and sophisticated!
I've come across many fashion books, but this one is perfect for the normal American woman. It has a guide to how many of what kind of clothes one should invest in - which was particularly helpful (and timeless, even). In fact, it was the primary reason I picked it up.
The other parts were pretty common to fashion books, but they were also well done.
Overall, I recommend this. It's a great guide to look nice, without breaking your budget. Well, it helps to show you what's worth investing it, at least.
Really enjoyed it. Lots of good tips, great pics, and chic style. One of the best books on 'style' that I have read so far. But as with all the other books, the conclusion is pretty much the same: wear what looks good on you, what you feel good in, and what you like. With a few exceptions for some people... ;)
I especially liked the pages of must-have lingerie styles (I'm tempted to scan it into my phone for my next shopping trip) and the break-downs of dressing your age (surprisingly important since I left my 20s behind!).
Harper's Bazaar is my favorite magazine, so I was pretty excited when I saw that my library received a copy of this book. We'll see if I'm able to adapt any of their tips into my everyday wardrobe...
