4.5 poignant, charming, sexy stars!!

Amber Lin is an author who knows how to write darkly emotional, deeply sensual stories. I read – and loved – her Lost Girls series, though I have to be in the mood for a story that will rip my heart out, chew it up, then put it back together again, each and every time. I look forward to these stories because sometimes they’re exactly what I need.

When I saw Chance of Rain at Netgalley, I knew I had to read it, but honestly, I was expecting a darker story, similar to those found in Lost Girls, so I didn’t dive in right away. (Those of you who know me and follow my posts will remember that the past six months of my real life has been full of emotional loss. My son went off to Uganda to serve a Christian Mission. My brother became very ill. My 11 year old dog had to be put to sleep, and lastly, my mom passed away in November. To say I had not been in the mood for a dark story at the time, is to say the last.)

Yesterday, while browsing my “Currently Reading” shelf which is more like a “Don’t Forget These Books” shelf, I saw this one sitting there and decided to read a few pages to get a feel for it. Those few pages turned into a few chapters, then a few chapters more, and before I knew it, it was 3:30am and I had finished it.

And loved it.

My review…

Chance of Rain is not at all the story I expected it to be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful story, but there wasn’t the level of angst and drama found in Lost Girls. This is a contemporary romance with a “you can go home again” and “second chance romance” plot. It’s sweet, very sexy, and the characters are real people with real lives, real hopes, and real dreams. And while it’s not dark, it’s still a poignant, romantic, inspiring story about letting go of the past in order to have a future filled with happiness, love, and a happily ever after you never imagined could be yours. You only have to reach for it, work for it, and never let it go.

The bottom line…

I’m so glad I saw this on my shelf and took a chance. It’s exactly what I needed and I hope there will be more such stories from this truly amazing author. Brava, Amber Lin! I’d love to see what you can do with Historical Romance… no doubt it’d be brilliant!

My thanks to Carina Press for providing a copy of this story in exchange for my honest thoughts. What a great story this is!

(And for the record, everything has a positive side if you just look for it. Yes, my son's in Uganda, but he's serving God's children there and our temporary loss is their much needed gain. Yes, my brother was very ill, but it was a wake-up call and now he's taking care of himself and they have 2 wonderful sons and a daughter on the way. My Honey dog, while we miss her terribly, lived a long, happy, pampered life. And my mom... that's the hardest loss of all, but she's no longer in pain and that alone makes our loss bearable.

Thank you to everyone whose thoughts and prayers carried me through these tough times. You're all proof that angels do not have wings!)

***** 4.5 STARS!! *****

This was such a beautiful and satisfying story. Second chances meet unresolved love and longing, I LOVED IT. Throw in an anguished SEALS man returning to his hometown to sell the farm he grew up in only to find he's finally coming home. To the one woman that has gently haunted him since highschool.

Although Natalie and Sawyer spent 3 weeks together all those years back, the time together made an impact. Natalie was left heartbroken with Sawyer abruptly leaving to join the military. He never said goodbye.

12 years later, Natalie still longs for Sawyer and all her old, unresolved feelings come rushing back with his sudden re-entrance back in the town of Dearling, Texas. One look at her, and Sawyer is struck with how much he still longs for her touch. But he left her...second chances never felt so good!

I love the way Amber Lin writes. She evokes such a mental picture with her crafty use of prose. It's poetic really, and quite beautiful to read. This was an incredibly steamy and erotic story. The love scenes are written so profoundly well that you'll need a fan near by. But they're not raunchy or over the top. Sensual, evocative and erotic in nature, I fell into them as if I was there.

Second chance love stories are very angsty, but this was done brilliantly. Loved it. I'm looking forward to continuing her Lost Girls series having read Tempting Fate, the 3rd one, first. They can be read as standalones with character crossover in each.

If you haven't tried this author, I highly recommend her. Great prose, beautiful romance and sizzling chemistry.

Thanks Jill, for the stellar rec!

Natalie Bouchard is stuck in time and seems to be waiting for something she's yet to define. The grandmother who raised her and ran the town's diner is now permanently residing in assisted care because she's now suffering from irreversible dementia. By keeping everything status quo, Natalie believes her grandmother might remember her old life if she ever visits the diner. And, deep down, she also believes her high school sweetheart, Navy SEAL Sawyer Nolan, might return and resume their relationship. She was right about Sawyer returning but resuming the relationship is another matter.

This is a lovely story of two very lonely people who reconnect with completely different expectations. Their paths to self discovery intersect with their desire for each other. Natalie is incredibly sensitive and patient with Sawyer, almost to a fault. He's almost the complete opposite, often cruel in his attempts to protect her from him, but resolute in wanting the best for her. There were times I wanted her to walk away from him because it was too painful but then Sawyer would experience a breakthrough.

I thought this would be a sweet love story and it's anything but! Natalie and Sawyer's romance blows the top off the steam meter and some of their issues are heartbreaking. Even though this isn't presented as a series, I'm hoping there's at least a follow up to see how they make out and if some of the interesting secondary characters have a shot at a story.

(I received an ARC from NetGalley)

I really like Amber Lin, and even though the whole, "I'm a military guy and I'm coming back to my home town to see the girl I left behind" thing doesn't really due much for me, I had to give this one a try. And I enjoyed it, though it wasn't anything mind-blowing.

I feel terrible saying that I didn't love this narration because only a few months after this audiobook was released, the veteran voice-over actress that recorded this book passed away tragically and unexpectedly. See linky-->(http://voiceoverinsider.com/uncategor...). While I think Vanessa Hart did a great job being expressive and emotional while she was narrating, her throaty voice came across sounding too mature for the female MC and it threw me off a bit.

For me, this story was hot, pleasant, and a bit boring. All in all, a good use of my money but I don't know if I would remember it in a few weeks.

Gitte & Jenny: 4.5 Beautiful Romantic Stars

description

Gitte:
See this story right here everyone? This is why I love to read romance. ‘Chance of Rain’ is the epitome of romance, it is the definition of romance. This is the type of story that leaves you with a satisfied heart that’s overflowing with gushy love and warmth and you will swoon and fan yourself as you get caught up in this second chance romance that just makes you feel without any unnecessary angst and drama.

‘I love this town, I loved you, even if it was only puppy love. Why did you leave?’

I loved every single minute I spent reading ‘Chance of Rain’ and was gutted when it ended. I wanted more and pouted for about fifteen minutes as I kept trying to click my kindle pages hoping there was some sort of epilogue somewhere. I wanted an epilogue, I craved one, but that’s because I’m a moaning spoilt reader who fell in love with two beautiful, funny, passionate and brilliantly written characters.

“No place in the world that don’t have storms,…”

Oh and as for Amber Lin, well she was already on my shelf as a favourite Author of mine and yet again she proved just why. Her writing style is beautiful, flawless and so evocative you live and breathe her stories. ‘Chance of Rain’ was sweet and emotional, it was hot and passionate and it had humour. Most of all though, it had that beautiful romance we all crave to escape into.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For being you.”

You felt it too didn’t you Jenny?

Jenny: You’ve hit the nail on the head G, I felt exactly the same and couldn’t agree more! Your comment was spot on because this was indeed the epitome of a romance story. It wasn’t drowning in angst, never felt laden down with drama, yet it had just enough of both to keep me interested and engrossed. Chance of Rain was quite simply a welcome escape and a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

I devoured every word and the imagery used by this author in regards to setting and characters made me feel as if I was part of this small town community.

‘Strange that they could see each other so clearly when their own self-doubts were obscured. Strange but also right. Like looking in the mirror and finding what she’d been searching for.‘

Coming from a city I love to escape in these type of books and this author most definitely transported me there to live every minute of Sawyer and Natalie’s beautifully sweet, touching and sexy story.

Gitte: Natalie and Sawyer were brilliantly written characters, they both had their demons which kept them from grabbing life by the scruff of the neck and from following their desires and true dreams.

‘She didn’t want to be content anymore, stagnant…’ ‘Her whole life was on hold.’

We follow their journey to find their place in life and work through errors of the past carried out by others as well as themselves. It was truly beautiful and both characters were written with such depth and emotion that despite the length of this story I found I completely connected with both Sawyer and Natalie and I fell in love with them and their story! They gave each other strength and both were faced with questioning themselves and their life.

‘She wanted a home and a family, but she also wanted the thrill, the passion. She wanted her husband so hot for her that he came up behind her in the middle of the day to make love. Was that too much to ask?’ – Natalie

I guess you could say both went on a journey of self-realisation aided by lust and love. And let me tell you, the chemistry between Natalie and Sawyer was pretty fierce and whoa….there were freezer moments a plenty, some of the hottest I’ve read!

‘Why not enjoy her softness, her strength when he had the chance? He couldn’t imagine her even wanting to stay after seeing first-hand how wrecked he was.’ – Sawyer

Jenny: Yes G and didn’t we love the journey Amber Lin took us on with this story about two wonderful yet flawed characters learning to deal with their pasts which was beautifully written, effortless to read and I really connected to these Sawyer and Natalie. My heart ached for the missed years and misunderstandings shared by these two. Though there were misunderstandings, they never felt convoluted and everything seemed to flow perfectly.

“It will be okay, I’ve got you.”

Although this was a shortish story…though longer than novella length, it certainly didn’t lack in any department. . Everything was described beautifully, the characters held my heart and the steamy scenes were…..well…..VERY steamy! Goodness….. Pass the ice bucket!

“If it were anyone, it would be you.”

Yep, I loved this romance about life in a small town, about two people running from their past. Sawyer running and never wanting to relive it and Natalie running yet being grounded by it in the present. It’s about second chance love, moving on, loving and living and about always following your heart. This is one to add to those TBR’s!

“I don’t want to disappoint you,” he whispered. “I don’t want to let you down.”

Holy shite!!! That was smoking HOT!

So this is my first Amber Lin read. I had no idea what to expect really. This story kind of had an old-fashioned feel to it. It's a story of small-town romance. Forgiveness. First love. Second chances.

Sawyer and Natalie's story was so sweet...and maybe even a little bit sad. I wanted to give them both a big giant hug!

Sawyer and Natalie fell in love in high school. So maybe it was puppy love. Young love. But it was love just the same. Natalie never dreamed of leaving Dearling, Texas... population 300. Dearling was her home.

Sawyer had different plans. Home wasn't Dearling, Texas. He wanted to make something of himself. Prove to his dad that he was worth something. So he leaves. He becomes a SEAL. And one day twelve years later he returns to Dearling, Texas and Natalie.

Sawyer and Natalie dance around each other until a rainstorm forces them to together for several days. And things really heat up...WOWZERS!!! *fans self*

Natalie still worries that Sawyer isn't in Dearling to stay....and Sawyer has no idea if he canstay.

“If it were anyone, it would be you.”

He wants to be what Natalie wants and needs. But can he??

This was a beautifully written novella of first loves, second chances and moving on from your past. It made me smile. It made me swoon. It was sweet. It was sexy.

Goodie, but it could have been better. The first half was stronger than the second and I really wanted an epilogue.
Still, I recommend it to you who wants to read a sweet and steamy story about friends to lovers. ;)

“I was telling the truth out there. I don’t know what I’m doing here. I can’t promise to stay.”

She should accept that, should let him off the hook, but instead she asked,

“What can you promise?” The shadows lent his brown eyes an amber glow.

"If it were anyone, it would be you.”

Sawyer Nolan left Dearling, Texas after graduation. He left his high school girlfriend Natalie Bouchard to join the Navy and never came back. Years later Sawyer comes homes to Dearling to sell his father’s house and cut the ties to him hometown once and for all. After spending time with Natalie though, is leaving really what he wants?

I’ve had a couple of Amber Lin’s books on my TBR list forever. Unfortunately, I keep getting sidetracked and haven’t gotten a chance to read anything by her until now. As soon as I saw the that she was releasing a novella and the hero was a Navy Seal, I knew I had to make time to read this one!

Even though Chance of Rain is a shorter read, approximately 48K words, I felt like I got a complete story. Sure, there were issues that weren’t addressed or that were tied up a little too neatly in the book, but for a novella, I didn’t feel like the story was missing anything. This second chance romance was full of steam. Natalie and Sawyer were totally hot together. I think if these two would have had more time to develop their sexual chemistry, it would have gone some very interesting places.

In a rush, she pulled her bra over her head. It tangled in her arms, and she let out a disgruntled sound. He chuckled, starting to pull at the straps that bound her wrists above her head. Then he paused, holding her still. His body vibrated against hers, trembling with restraint when she was the one restrained.

“Sawyer?” she asked, breathless.

“Just wait,” he said, his voice taut. “Don’t move.”

She would have laughed, if she hadn’t been trembling herself. “What are you going to do to me?”

“You know what I want.”

Yes, interesting places =) I'm only disappointed there's not more to their story to see exactly how hot and steamy these two can be!

Overall, I really enjoyed Chance of Rain. I liked the story and the romance was HOT. I almost wish that this would have been a full length novel so the story line and characters could have been more developed but that's just because I enjoyed it. I definitely plan to check out more from this author sooner rather than later.

Navy SEAL Sawyer Nolan never wanted to return to Dearling, Texas but when his father passed he had to return. In and out was Sawyer's plan, the memories surrounding the town and his father are too brittle and Sawyer doesn't want to reopen those wounds. That is until he walks into the diner owned by Natalie Bouchard.

Sawyer had walked away from Natalie once and it looks like time has not tampered with the chemistry they once had. Sawyer wants Natalie, but Natalie isn't interested in being a fling. When Natalie decides she would rather have the memories, if even brief with Sawyer than nothing at all. If Sawyer can let go of the past, he may just have a future because there is no denying Natalie owns him heart and soul.

Wonderful read, Sawyer was an intricate hero who felt abandoned in a sense by the town he grew up in. Natalie was spirited and I liked the fact that she calls out Sawyer when needed, she doesn't side step the issues she lays it out. Great book to sit down with on a rainy day.

Amber Lin has a way with words.

She made a typical plot of lost navy soldier who went home reconnected with his high school sweetheart become a heart warming story with her writing. It wasn't perfect but still a good read.

It was refreshing that a town could be accepting and that there were no antagonist in the story. The only problems the main characters have, are themselves. How to move on, accept their past and looking forward. I like how the book ended, although with uncertainty, but the thought that they are together is what matters most.

Happy sigh.

Sawyer grew up with a father who was distant and pushed him too hard. He never felt adequate enough. So he leaves town right when he turns eighteen, enlisting in the army without looking back. Without saying goodbye to a heartbroken girl.

Natalie plants her roots in her hometown, running her grandmother's diner when she falls ill to dementia. She loves the people and the place, but she feels like she's settling.

When Sawyer returns years later to sell his family farm, there's still a spark between them, a memory that has never truly faded away. As they gradually fall (back) in love, we see the past that has shaped them and their current doubts. Natalie desires Sawyer's love but fears another rejection; she's also hesitant toward change and leaving her comfortable life behind. Sawyer doesn't believe he deserves Natalie. He doesn't believe he has any chance to fix the farm. He knows he'll fail, so why not leave before he humiliates himself? I loved seeing these two work out their differences, finding a way to fit together. Their chemistry is unbelievably good, but it's their thoughts and dialogue that give the book its true tenderness and emotion. They learn not only to find worth in each other but in themselves as well, which is all we could ask for in a relationship, really.

Chance of Rain is exactly my type of love story, for several reasons:
1. It has a perfect pace. I never thought that the romance came on too strong too quickly, nor was the tension stretched too thin to the point of aggravation. They communicate. They think through their frustrations and doubts. Everything feels natural and genuine.
2. Second chance love, one of my favorite romance tropes.
3. The small town setting has also become one of my favorites. It adds layers of intimacy and nostalgia that perfectly complement the feel-goodness of a romance.
4. A hero and heroine with a surprising amount of depth. For one, they are both so damn likeable and engaging. Their flaws, while not seemingly original to this genre, still feel three dimensional and somehow new. Amber Lin doesn't use her characters' reservations and past experiences as accessories or ornaments or plot devices to keep them apart; they are their skin and bones. Sawyer and Natalie are fully fleshed out individuals who need to grow separately before they can build a strong relationship together.
5. Sawyer. Yum! I will always need a new hero to swoon over.
6. The writing was gorgeous. Sometimes it got to be too flowery, but mostly it was a joy to read:
Strange that they could see each other so clearly when their own self-doubts were obscured. Strange but also right. Like looking in the mirror and finding what she'd been searching for.

Her curiosity sank deep into the earth, a fathomless well. On the surface, there was only her reflection. But if she leaned far enough, if she fell inside, she might never be able to climb back out.

His gut clenched, almost like the pinch of hunger. The same feeling—if only, if only.

7. The book definitely falls back on old-fashioned, more traditional values, but not in a way that feels preachy. Sawyer wants to be able to provide for his wife, and Natalie enjoys taking care of her husband. It's the type of family and home life this couple wants, nothing wrong with that, and makes sense given their backgrounds.
8. Free of melodrama, love triangles, ridiculous obstacles, and any other thing generally set out to annoy me. I was also very glad to discover that, despite what the synopsis leads you to believe, this is not another story that starts as a no-strings-attached fling. There is nothing meaningless about their relationship. Sawyer and Natalie know the strings are already attached, even if they can't admit it out loud.
8. A happy ending, duh.

All in all, a wonderful reading experience and a good book to cuddle up to with a blanket and country music playing in the background. :)

After reading her Lost Girls series of books I came to count on Ms. Lin for an intensely emotional read that puts you through the wringer. Chance of Rain is a quieter story that's no less emotional but doesn't rip your heart out quite as painfully as the books of hers I've read before. It's a tale of reunited lovers who in some ways are still living in the past which affects their journey to HEA. With small town idiosynchrocies as the backdrop there's a bit of added charm and a sense of matchmaking surrounding Natalie and Sawyer in the vividly depicted denizens of Dearling.

Natalie and Sawyer might have only had three weeks together but it became a part of their lives and has had them always in each other's thoughts since. Natalie's life essentially stopped after Sawyer left without a word and it's made her desperate to keep things from changing. She runs the diner to keep a part of her Gram close as Gram's mind continues to deteriorate. The diner becomes her haven in an emotional storm of loss that started with Sawyer and continues with Gram and I ached for her. All she wants is a picture perfect life with a husband and children and deep down she sees only Sawyer in that role. Until that time though she relies on Dearling to keep her safe and cared for and can't envision being anywhere else as the whole town is her family.

Sawyer couldn't leave Dearling fast enough and the emotional abuse of his father behind. He left to make something of himself but his father's words have kept him feeling weak. He doesn't think himself worthy of Natalie even after all the time he's been away and it makes his return even more painful. He thought by running away from Dearling all those feelings of inadequacy would leave him, but he's discovered that they've always been there and it's time to deal with them head-on if he wants to claim Natalie. Only by standing together can they finally put the past behind them and move into the future together.

Chance of Rain is a sweet yet immensely sensual read featuring real people dealing with real issues. There's no big roadblocks or melodrama from others, the conflict is purely internal and therefore more difficult to overcome but more satisfying once they do. Sawyer needs someone to support him and Natalie does that but also kicks him in the butt when needed to get him to stop hiding behind his past. She's an admirable heroine and he's a hero worth fighting for and with and I was cheering for them every step of the way. Under Ms. Lin's talented hand she weaves an almost poetic web that draws readers into this wonderfully atmospheric story and charms them completely. Along with intensely steamy sexual interludes there's tender and quiet moments that allow for introspection and help us get to know the people Natalie and Sawyer have become apart from each other and who they are around each other now. Though I wish there had been an epilogue to completely wrap things up this is ultimately a heartwarming story that's different from her previous works but no less impactful. If you haven't read Ms. Lin's books yet now's the time to start as this book will leave you with a smile on your face!

I read a fair number of small town series (Ruthie Knox's Camelot, Shannon Stacey's Kowalski's and Jill Shalvis' Happy Harbor series) I tend to avoid books set in farming communities. I spent five years living in the prairies of Alberta and I have learned as much as I needed to about the toils and travails of farming communities.

Chance of Rain reunites former high school sweethearts, Natalie and Sawyer. Natalie looks after her Gram's diner and Sawyer left behind his father's farm for a career in the Navy. Natalie had a long-time crush on Sawyer that briefly blossomed into going steady during the last few weeks of Sawyer's senior year. Their relationship came to abrupt end when Sawyer broke up with her and left Dearling to become a Navy SEAL. Twelve years later, Sawyer is finally back in town but only temporarily, so he can fix-up and liquidate the farm he grew up in.

The romance in this book really didn't work for me. Both Natalie and Sawyer keep are still deeply attracted to each other but push each other away and need other people and tropical storm to push them back toward each other. I didn't really connect with their passivity and I felt while many complicated emotional issues complicating their relationship were raised there was little resolution or direct dialogue by the characters about their issues.

While the romance didn't connect with me the story of Sawyer's homecoming did. While Sawyer is actively struggling with the idea of whether he can commit to Natalie and make a go of it in Dearling, the bigger story seemed to me was whether Sawyer would wake up to realize that his hometown hadn't rejected him, but instead was waiting for him to come back and he needed to stop trying to prove himself worthy of being loved by the town, and simply accept their love.

I will probably check out other books by Amber Lin as I am despite myself curious about the other residents of Dearling, such a Natalie's outrageous busy body best friend Lucy and Sawyer's banker-turned-farmhand Ian.

Review Excerpt:

What I love the most about Chance of Rain is how Amber Lin uses every word to build a whole world in the one small Texas town with stories and descriptions that put us there by showing instead of telling. We learn so much about not only our hero and heroine, but also the town, its more colorful members, and the environment which formed Natalie and Sawyer into the adults they have become in the years since they were together back in high school. The actions of the the characters ring true and provide a foundation for a well earned reconciliation by the time we reach their happy ending. A selfish part of me wishes there was more to read, but even if this is the only time we visit Dearling, Chance of Rain will always stand alone as a perfect jewel of romance. I wish more stories of this length were half as good.

This book sucked me in. I have enjoyed all of Amber Lim's books and this one was no exception. I am not always a fan of the "farming community" kind of small town books, but have to say I really enjoyed this one. Natalie has take over the diner her Grandmother had always run, but was really in a rut about running it. Her high school honey, who left home to become a Navy Seal returns home to sell his father's farm, but really want to see Natalie again. This story rang true to me for the most part. There was attraction and conflict and all the elements I want to read about in a good contemporary romance book.

It was heart-wrenchingly good! The characters' desires were so vividly portrayed—I really wanted them to end up together. I'm so glad they finally found a way to make it work. I'm also happy that Sawyer perhaps finally came to understand his father's love, even if it wasn't shown through words or actions when he was younger. And most of all, I'm glad Sawyer ultimately found the strength to go after what he truly wanted.
My favorite quote from the novel:
“The institution of marriage—what a brilliant fucking idea. He got to see her smile every day, hear her laugh every day, sleep with her every day—and those were just the minimums. All he had to do in return was protect and provide for her. For Natalie, the woman he was crazy about, had always been crazy about.”

This was a nice romance packed full of chemistry. The romance was great, and I liked the characters even though Sawyer could be an idiot sometimes.

The problem was depth. I wanted more storyline and more personality. However, this was still pleasant.

I read a previous book by this author and I really liked it (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) so I was very excited to read this one. I'm happy to report that Chance of Rain lived up to my expectations and I loved it!

Oh I really liked Natalie! Maybe she's a bit of a familiar character but she works for me. She's a small-town girl, through and through. She loves Dearling and is happy to stay there for the rest of her life. Having grown up in a smallish town, I could kind of identify with how Natalie felt. I, also, never really felt a compulsion to leave town and never look back. Granted, I don't live there anymore but I never had plans to blow outta town. Natalie is running her Gram's diner and loves it. Gram isn't able to have anything to do with the diner anymore so Natalie has essentially become the owner, manager, head waitress, etc. And she loves it. She talks about how fulfilling it is to know that she's providing nourishment for the people in Dearling. And she's providing a place for them to spend some time and just hang out. I imagine that I would feel the same way, if I had my own restaurant. I guess I'm secretly a teensy bit jealous of Natalie because owning a diner is one of those things that I wish I could do. But for anyone who doesn't really like stories where one of the characters is a chef or a cook, this would still be a good book to read because the diner isn't a central part of the story. It IS a central part of Natalie but the book doesn't spend a lot of time inside the diner. So I thought that Natalie was a very likeable character and she felt very real to me. The fact that she has had a hard time getting over her first love really brought her to life.

The man on question is Sawyer Nolan. The author definitely lets the reader know that Sawyer had a rough childhood. I felt like Sawyer's story was a little bit incomplete though. At first, I felt like there was plenty of details regarding his childhood. I mean, it sounded like maybe his dad neglected him in a very serious way... like, his dad didn't really feed him. At all. It also sounded like his dad verbally abused him but not by yelling at him. I think it was more by always assuming the worst about Sawyer. But towards the end of the book, I felt like Sawyer softened towards his father a bit. Sawyer kind of realized that his dad was depressed and devastated after his (Sawyer's) mom died and that his dad just gave up. I can certainly understand coming to terms with that, but forgiving his father? I don't know. I mean, his father practically starved him and barely did ANYTHING to care for him. I'm just not sure that something like that can be forgiven and I'm not sure that a child would ever be able to understand those actions, even as an adult. Other than that, I loved Sawyer. He's a Navy SEAL so you KNOW he's hotter than hot!! I really loved how the author described him! She talks about how Sawyer is all planes and angles and abs! Hello!! The other thing that really grabbed me about Sawyer was that he has at least a little bit of PTSD. I like that people are talking about PTSD and that it's not some dirty, little secret of the military. The more it becomes part of our lexicon, the easier it will be for vets and their families to get help.

Natalie and Sawyer are perfect together. Chance of Rain is definitely a story about opposites attracting and its so much fun! Sawyer couldn't wait to leave Dearling and Natalie can't imagine ever leaving. And still, the heat between these two is off the charts. Who doesn't love the opposites attracting story!? I was just about as happy as Natalie was when she and Sawyer were thrown together during a big storm. Ummm, yeah so there's LOTS of heat and Sexy Time in this book. I found a little bit of humor thrown in as well. I really feel like this book had a little bit of everything!

I would definitely recommend Chance of Rain by Amber Lin. Yes, it's true - I have read another book of hers and I did like it, so you could call me a fan. But this book was so much fun to read. Sawyer was a seriously sexy hero who was far from perfect and Natalie was a small town girl who wasn't sure if she had enough to offer Sawyer. I really hope that this book becomes a series because there were supporting characters who had their own sparks flying and I'd love to read their stories too! Great book! 4.5 stars!

It seems like forever ago (it was only a year ago..) that I was reviewing Giving It Up by Amber Lin. I absolutely fell in love with her writing style and her no-apologies, raw, and honest story. So I started to hear rumblings about a her new book that was separate from the Lost Girls series, called Chance of Rain and got super excited. I read the synopsis, flailed a little, and requested it on Net Galley ASAP. And I'll have you know that Ms. Amber Lin has so many facets to her writing ability, that it is astonishing. Chance of Rain is not as "dark" as the Lost Girls but, it is every bit as wonderful. At first, I thought it wasn't going to hold the grit that I had come to love from Ms. Lin's books but, fear not it definitely does.

"His hands on her hips and his mouth over hers. He would swallow her whole, and please, yes, where could she sign up?"

When Sawyer Nolan returns to Dearling to determine the future of his late father's farmland, Natalie Bouchard's heartbreak and girlhood crush come back with a vengeance. He might have up and left without a proper goodbye, but she can't help how her heart and body reacts when she sees him again. Up until now, Natalie as been stationary in her life. She never left Dearling to explore the world, instead she took over her grandmother's diner and has been content to lead the life she always has. That is until Sawyer pops back in her life, and awakens a yearn for more. Sawyer would have loved to never have to step foot in Dearling again, not even for a glimpse of the girl he thought he could have a future with. But just has he makes her want new things out of life, she is beginning to tear down the 10 foot wall around his heart. Sawyer and Natalie and two peas in a pod. They both are not thrilled with how their life turned out in some form or fashion. And while all Natalie knows and wants is to stay in Dearling, that is the exact opposite of what Sawyer wants. Truth be told, I saw Natalie and Sawyer both slowly changing the other's mind set on to stay or not stay in Dearling and I couldn't tell how this was going to end. Was Natalie going to break away from the obligation she thinks she has to keep running her grandmother's diner? Or was Sawyer going to put his seemingly ugly past with his father aside and make Natalie and Dearling his home for good?

"My sweet girl. My practical, crazy girl. Love you."
~Sawyer

I felt for these two so much. I wanted both of them to find the happiness they deserved. But, that's easier said than done, because they are two of the most bull-headed people ever! Natalie is so unsure of herself and of Sawyer, however part of that is due to Sawyer's aloof nature. On the other hand, Sawyer has blocked himself off from any feeling for so long, that once he feel a glimmer of anything for Natalie he turns into a real asshat. Although, their interactions and squabbles were quite hilarious. Eventually, they enter into a physical only relationship. Well, they try to but, those pesky feelings.. *tsk tsk*. Logically, Natalie knows she can't expect anything more from Sawyer than what he's offering at face-value. Her heart on the other hand, has no qualms about going haywire and becoming emotionally attached. She wants a family and a home and try as she might, she's finding it hard to sell those points to Sawyer. I think Natalie wants a family so bad so she can reinvest herself into something that is her own. Right now, she's just filling the void of her ailing grandmother, and it's breaking her heart and spirit. So while they're busy playing doctor every time they set eyes on one another, they missed the part where they have irreparably become a part of one another. They have a very distinct symbiotic relationship by the end and I was thrilled to see these two find their own version of a happy ending. So, if Amber Lin is one of your faves- pick this up, you'll love it! If Amber Lin is a new-to-you author- pick this up, you'll love it! :) All joking aside, this a fantastic book and I am so thrilled to have gotten an advanced copy so I could share my enthusiasm for it.

Happy Reading!

**JOSIE'S REVIEW**

*3.5 Stars*

This is my first time reading a book from this author and I enjoyed it. It was a short and fast pace read and involved a military man. I am a stickler for anything military so it was full speed ahead for me. As I mentioned this was a short read, I hope to see a little more of Sawyer and Natalie in the future.

Sawyer is a tortured Navy SEAL who has returned back home after his father’s death to sell the farm he grew up on. He is coming home to a place that has held a lot of memories for him, one of them being Natalie. Natalie is the woman he walked away from right after graduating high school. Sawyer left Dearling, Texas to join the military. He knew Natalie’s life was in Dearling with her family and small group of friends.

Natalie and Sawyer had only 3 weeks together, 12 years ago but within that short amount of time, they had a deep connection, or so she thought. After Sawyer left Natalie, without even a goodbye, she was heartbroken and left with unanswered questions.

Natalie is running her grandmother’s diner and still feels that emptiness that Sawyer left behind all those years ago. (DON’T GET ME WRONG, she has been out with other guys, but they could never be Sawyer). Natalie sill wants Sawyer and all the unsettled feelings come back when Sawyer walks through the doors of the diner. Sawyer sees Natalie and he has a hard time ignoring the fact that after 12 years there is still something there. Too bad he is not sticking around. Sawyer decides to stay away from Natalie, because it will only make the inevitable harder for the both of them.

Guess what? Natalie is not going to let him get away that easy. Natalie decides to bring him a piece of cherry pie (Sawyer loves cherry pie). In that visit a storm hits and the pair are stuck together for 3 days. A lot can happen in that time. Natalie is ok with the now part but starts to see more of life with Sawyer on that farm, but Sawyer cannot commit to anything permanent in Dearling. He knows he hurt Natalie, but once he finally realizes he wants Natalie forever, he is going to prove to her he wants her.

“We can’t do this, if we had sex, you would want…you’d expect.”

“I’d expect an orgasm, mister. But that’s it. Yeah, I’d like more than that, but I’m a big girl. If this is all we have together, I can be okay with that.”

This was a really steamy story. The sex is amazing and it was not crude but romantic. These two knew what they wanted and they expressed themselves freely. This was an enjoyable, sensual read and the individuals felt like every day people that a reader could connect too. This was a touching, loving, exciting story about moving on and finding joy with love a second time around.

“Yeah I want to se you.”

“You sure? I think I could come like that this, and we’d be done.”

“Ah, sh*t. I want to see those pretty t*ts before I come. Let me see you, baby.”

” ‘You make me a lot of things Miss Natalie Bouchard, but crazy isn’t one of them. I got there without your help.’ “

So here’s the thing: I like my romances all dark and twisty and kinky edgy. BUT, apparently I also love second chance romances that are lighter, heartwarming, charming, sexy, (and maybe just a teeny bit kinky), as long as they are written just like this book. That’s not to say that Chance of Rain is all sugary sweetness and light. It’s not over sweet: there’s real life drama and palpable emotion emotion, sizzling chemistry, and HOT and slightly edgy sex. The author strikes the exact perfect balance between romance and sex and hope, only tinged with a bit of relatable darkness.

The small town setting is perfect for the lovable characters that inhabit Natlie’s world and were once a part of Sawyer’s, though he left directly after high-school to become a Navy SEAL. He left behind an innocent and heart-broken young girl that grew up to be a beautiful women that had reserved a place in her heart for him. Sawyer, a surly, sexy alpha male, can’t help his attraction to the loyal and independent Natalie. The tension and chemistry as they reconnect is fantastic and the sparks fly as they move from flirtation to steamy sex.

Their story is beautifully written, I was completely taken by the emotion and the characters of this wonderful, hopeful book. I swooned at the romance, and laughed and cried as the pages flew by, all the way to the happily-ever-after. As far as I’m concerned, this perfect combination of sex and sweet and drama and emotion is exactly how romance is done.

“Yes. I can’t admit it yet, but I want every kinky, dirty, passionate thing in the night, a counterpoint to the whole, heartwarming days.”

Sawyer left his small hometown behind, not bothering to really say goodbye to the only one who took residence in his heart. He has come back to get his father's house ready to sell and get out of town again, but he sees Natalie and all those feelings that were buried come back. Natalie lived in a small town her whole life. She took care of most of the people in that town at her Grandmother’s diner. It was important to her to keep something that her Grandmother loved close to her, so she didn’t change a thing. It was on one of those days where she had been up since four o’clock that he walked in. Sawyer Nolan, she never thought she would see him again.

Many books on SEALs have them joining some rescue mission and finding a way to still be involved in the action. This one has a SEAL come home to a small town and try to turn around the family farm. To me it is a fresh angle for a plot and I really enjoyed it. Many military personnel return home with emotional scares, Sawyer was one who arrived on his first day of boot camp with them. He is a hero that I grew to love the more his character that was revealed to me. Natalie was a small town girl in a holding pattern. She seemed to be in one when she met Sawyer in High School, ventured out some during their time together, but went into that holding pattern again when he left town suddenly. Natalie has great love for those close to her, but she doesn’t feel a part of what she wants so much – a family. Natalie and Sawyer must each resolve their individual destiny before they can think of a common future.

This book is filled with great characters and a true small town. I see lots of potential for future stories and I look forward to reading more about Dearling.

This is a quick read, falling somewhere between a novella and a full-length novel. It's a sweet but steamy story of second chance love. But don't let the shorter length fool you. What this story lacks in length, it makes up for in content.

The two main characters, Natalie and Sawyer, are portrayed and developed really well. They have a history together, but more than that, they have many years apart. We don't just get to see them as misplaced high school sweethearts, we get to see them as the individuals that they are and what makes up the breadth and depth of who they are. This understanding of who they are individually, and what they lack or feel is missing, is also the crux of what makes them work so well together, once given that second chance.

I think the author did a great job examining both Natalie and Sawyer, and allowing them to examine themselves, with honest perspective and expectations. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop, and even beyond that enjoyed watching their personal growth. Not only did their personalities work beautifully together, but of course their physical attraction and sexual prowess were also quite compatible. There are many an intense and heated moment along the way, so don't let the cover fool you into thinking this is just a sweet read. There's a whole lot of sexy, too.

I really enjoyed this read, this small town, these characters, and the ending. I don't know if other characters in this story will get their own books, but I see some potential for future stories, and would love to read them.

It's funny how after all those years a spark of chemistry between two people can still be there and Sawyer well that boy sure doesn't mind showing it, "he glanced, pointedly, at her ring finger. Her empty ring finger. Then his gaze slid away, but it was too late. She'd seen his interest, and - oh, hell, she was interested too." Natalie I'm proud of her for standing her ground on things, "no," she repeated, her voice tinged with bitterness. "So I'm good enough to cop a feel in the dark but not for anyone to know. Well, sorry. Not interested." Yea she really knows how to stand her ground, "I should have skipped the baked goods, I see that now. I should have spent more time on my hair or bright red lipstick. I should have come here naked." Okay, that would have been weird. "I mean, with a robe or a trench coat or something. See? I don't even know how to do this. I don't know how people do it." When Natalie is happy she seems to go on about Sawyer's erm...member, "so thick and warm. And the skin was so soft. I can still imagine it on my tongue. Did you taste yourself when you kissed me? I love the shaped of it, the size - it's perfect. Almost too big. That's the perfect size." Yea... overdoing it there Nat. I loved this book and the cover is so pretty.

This book had me by the throat and would not let go. I started it Sunday afternoon and I picked it up every single chance I got. It was sooooo good. This book was all about Natalie and Sawyer. There was no other conflict to split the focus, nothing else to deal with but just the two of them. I loved it. It was intimate, intense and so freaking sexy. I felt like I was intruding at times...the moments between them. Gah.

So good. This is a book that I totally wish that it was longer AND I want an epilogue! I want to read more about their happily ever after, I mean, they really do some emotional work to get together. That's what this book is...emotional work. Two adults who had a teenage...relationship or whatever and now have the freedom, as adults, to do as they please. (AKA boink like bunnies if they want) Of course, they have to get out of their own way but I enjoyed the process of Sawyer and Natalie making their way to each other for good.

Rain played a huge part in getting Natalie and Sawyer together and it added to the sexy and sometimes dark feeling of this book.

This was a really quick read for me :)

Natalie lives in a small town that she has lived in all her life. She runs the local diner owned by her grandmother who is now in a rest home. She has a simple routine live where nothing much changes.

That is until the day that Sawyer Nolan walks into her diner. Her high school romance who walked away from her to be a Navy SEAL. He is back in town to sort out his deceased father's farm and then he is moving on.

Sawyer becomes a daily visitor to the diner and ends up staying longer than he first planned, he is finding a bit of a connection to the land and enjoys working on it. He is also enjoying seeing Natalie again.

In the midst of a storm this couple end up alone together at Sawyers farm for several days and they completely give into their desire to each other but Natalie knows it is just a one off fling.

Is Sawyer really ready to once again walk away from Natalie and his family farm or will he take a chance and think with his heart instead of his head?

A really lovely romantic read
