Cornelius Roister is a flirt, has been since coming out. He lives loud, proud, and for the moment. What only his best friend, Gustav Gus Hermance, knows is that it’s a defense mechanism, an act, used to keep people from getting too close. People that are close can hurt you, and he’s had enough pain to last him a lifetime. When Cornelius visits Gus at his new home, he is ecstatic to discover his mate in Einan, a gargoyle enforcer. Until him and large-and-in-charge Einan have their first personality clash…and then their second. They just can’t seem to carry on a conversation without disagreeing or arguing. Is Cornelius’s mating doomed before it even gets started? Or can Cornelius and Einan find some common ground?
Well, it’s really just sex. Sure, there’s a bit of character stuff thrown in, but sex drowns out every other consideration nearly all the time. It’s basically porn with a bit of story attached. And I might be mistaken, but the writing seems sub-par for this author. Perhaps a bit of revision would have helped? And, uh, more character development and plot instead of the implausible sex?
In the last third it became apparent that something truly interesting could have been made of this story if it hadn’t been so rushed. I mean, I get that in these books everyone has some kind of dramatic trauma to get over, but the thing with serious trauma is that just glossing over it cheapens the concept and the severity of it.
That said, I did like Cornelius. And I did not find anything here offensive (always keeping in mind that the BDSM and the sex in general are more of a fantasy type, of course).
Regarding my continued treasure hunt for homophone errors, I can’t report a new one with this instalment. As if to make up for that we get stuff like tussled for tousled. Plus a minor thing I usually try to ignore, but perhaps I should air it out before it festers inside me: The abbreviation for pectoral muscles is pecs, not pecks. Pecks is related to the action of pecking. *shrug* A small thing, yet surprisingly common. Been bugging me forever.
I knew the Gargoyles would ROCK!!!!!! \0/, Valcar made his first appearance. Hopefully there will be more to come. This book was the salve to my hectic week.
As with any series that has a medium to lengthy wait in between books that details tend to get forgotten or skewed in memory. I did have that here with Cornelius but could still follow the story. I felt this Charlie Richards book was more developed than the Kontra Menagerie book (Second Chance at Mate) that I just read.
This was a bit oversexed with bdsm elements thrown in but all in all I didn't think it was super over the top.. the bdsm elements, not the sex. The other thing I didn't like was how Cornelius issues weren't focused on more. He and Einen working together to overcome them.. a little at a time. But him standing up for himself at the end was a "like" thing for me.
Not quite what I expected. I thought the personality clashes would come before the mating and keep them from bonding. In this case it seemed more like misunderstandings caused by not communicating. Of course when you have sex, before getting to know one another, that's bound to happen. Still I like this world and for the most part, it was a cute fluff read.
One note in reference to a character named Vane. He apparently soaks up information like a sieve. If that is the case, it makes him rather unintelligent. Last time I checked, a sieve was the same thing as a colander and allows things to drain through. I'm going to go out on a limb and say a sponge, was the word the author intended.
3.75 I have to say this is a step up from the last two installments in this series. I had high hopes for this series but was disappointed with each book that was released. This book was definitely an improvement. Not great but not as bad as the last 2 have been. Cornelius and Einan have constant misunderstanding and arguments that cause them nothing but pain and frustration. But it makes for a good book! I'm hoping that the future books will continue to improve as this one has.
an happy Cornelius gets his happy ending unfortunately, this book is mostly sex, and the development is slightly lacking here and there, I was hoping that he would get pass his trauma and actually top... but then it's understandable for now... and happy tho that at the end he's happy...
My least favorite in this series. I loved Vane, but never warmed up to Cornelius and his mate, Einan. Still love the concept of the gargoyles and looking forward to next book.
Cornelius was a bit annoying for me and some things in the story bothered me, but overall I liked them as a couple the baby in the story was adorable. Short read.
This was a touching and fun read. The plot revolves around Einan (gargoyle enforcer), and Cornelius (rhino shifter), which I think is a very unique mix. While Cornelius is visiting with his friend, Gus, he realizes that Einan is his mate. Cornelius has an extremely painful past so he's very cautious with the dominant type of male. Einan slowly tries to build trust with him and show him that he'd never hurt him as he learns to understand his mate and his needs. The characters were well developed and the story was riveting, especially when Cornelius goes to rescue his sister with Vane (gargoyle) to assist and guard him. His ex had abused him and treated him like he was nothing more than a pet (really worse than a pet), but he held his own and stood up to him, and I loved it. I'm pretty hooked on this series, so I'll be reading the next. There was lots of heat in this book between the two main characters, and it was creative and even cute in parts. This was definitely an engaging and engrossing installment. :)
Needs some serious edits. I forgave it in the last book, but this was all over the place from the beginning…to the point I had to guess who was who in terms of the situation bc author switched names. Not the kind of book I want to pay for outside KU.
I once picked up a random book from the Stone Ridge universe, and I liked it. Now I’m going through the whole universe and completing the whole list on the author's website.
(trope spoilers below)
There is a lot of insta-love and soulmate/beloved stuff and I love it. In the background there is a continuous bigger plot and the series are all interconnected. Some books I like more than others, but in general it’s a great adventure, and I do not regret starting all those books at all.
If you'd like to read about more books I liked, check out my Goodreads profile. I also sometimes post reviews on Instagram and talk about bookish stuff on Threads.
It took me a bit to remember Cornelius a secondary character in Gus and Tible's story, but it was fun to see a second rhino/gargoyle match up when he encounters Einan when he comes to visit his friends.
Cornelius has a lot of baggage from his past that hadn't come out in previous encounters with him. At first, I didn't like how he seemed to jump to conclusions and putting the worst representation on things Einan did and said, but then after getting his story I only felt sorry for him and was glad that he'd found Einan.
Einan is a domineering sort and can be a bit gruff so it was good that he'd been paired with such a gentle fun-loving mate. They get hot and heavy pretty quick, but then their relationship starts to develop too.
I enjoyed the big confrontation with Cornelius' ex. What. A. Jerk! I was so glad to see Cornelius get a bit of his own back. And that bit of surprise at the end for them after they witness the hatching of Gus and Tible's son (too cute), was just a bit of adorable extra.
Love this series as I do many of her other books. A Paranormal's Love series is an off-shoot and runs parallel line of stories to the older Wolves of Stone Ridge and Kontra's Menagerie stories. I do recommend reading them all as they publish to get the best experience from the books.
Cornelius FINALLY gets his love. I enjoy reading all the different series Charlie Richards creates and how all the characters interconnect. Cornelius first arrives in 'Gustav's Gargoyle Adventure, Wolves of Stone Ridge #14'. He is a good friend of Gus', then Tible and even Bobby Truman who eventually mates with Maelgwn.
In this installment Cornelius comes to the Gargoyle Clutch just outside of Durango to be there when Gus & Tibles egg hatches. There he meets Einen, the Head Enforcer for the clutch and Cornelius' mate. Trouble of course ensues.
There are instances of light BDSM here and discussions of past trauma, rape and abuse but it is dealt with nicely. Well, as nicely as rape, abuse and trauma can be. Cornelius will always have psychological scars but he is able to confront and stop his abuser with support from his mate and friends.
What I enjoy so much about this authors work is the characters seem so real. None are perfect, make mistakes, have scars (both real & mental) or problems that they bring to the mate bond. While everything is all wrapped up nicely with an HEA at the end you end the book feeling like you've made new friends.
This is the story of Einan and Cornelius. Cornelius visits Gis and Tible and meets his mate, Einan, the head enforcer for their gargoyle clutch. There are misunderstandings, Einan is big and gruff, and Cornelius is a flirt. I like that this story has some drama and the two protagonists have to actually talk to one another and work out some issues. There is some drama with people from Cornelius’ past causing problems. There is also my favorite—a HEA.
Trigger warning: mention of past abuse and rape. Again more of the same, I did enjoy it, but it is really just average. The writing and editing are meh, the characters fell flat, as did the plot. There was such a potential to both characters and the drama Cornelius had been through, unused potential. It's a simple and quick read for in between, enjoyable if you don't expect anything more than a bit of entertainment.
Cornelius is visiting his friend Gus and his mate, waiting the birth of their first born, when he discovers his mate Einan, one of the gargoyle clutch's enforcers.
Einan instantly scents his mate in Cornelius but is a little put off by the man's flirting with every non mated gargoyle around.
Even as their personalities clash they can't ignore the mate pull.
I've enjoyed the other books in this series and had high hopes for this story. I felt that the characters were thrown together and the story lines didn't play out fluidly for me. Also, I had a really hard time keeping the characters straight.
