In the land of dreams, anything can happen; epic battles, adventure and even humor. In the case of D-Nine a fantasy root is layered inside a unique story arch and concept.
Dr. James has always enjoyed fantasy books because he had been reading them ever since he was a little boy. What he doesn't know, however, is that he is about to embark on a fantasy quest that he will never forget. James had been suffering from severe migraine attacks, or so he thought. During an episode of syncope, he is brought into the fantasy world of Edonia where he is in unfamiliar territory, in more ways than one. He is in a new land that he has never seen before, in a different time period, he has a different hairstyle and color, and he has an unfamiliar face. As it turns out, he has transformed into a she, an assassin magnet, where he must acquire his skills that he learned in the 21st century to save a land from political scandal and an even bigger conflict in the heart of everyone's worse imagination.
Very interesting, able to relate to it as I'm a medical personnel and a fairy tale , princess lover. I also like action. And fight scenarios in the book attracted my attention too. But I'm not sure about those who only like a certain type of books genre, they might find it pretty confusing. As it's a juggle between reality and fantasy life on the same book.
Judging by the other reviews this book received, I'm in the minority of not loving this novel. My reasoning for this is partly the premise and largely the characterisation.
To begin with though, I must credit Magus Tor for coming up with a very original idea. An adult doctor, overcome by headaches, finds himself transported into another world, one of fantasy. It is an idea full of promise, of the confusion that must overcome a man magicked away into another world.
What I found bizarre though, the major jarring point in the narrative, was why the adult, male doctor had to be transported into the body of a teenage girl. In fact, I found some parts a little disturbing, such as when the good doctor peeks down his own blouse to giggle at his young feminine body. Aside from the idea of a story being based around a man turning into a woman and the erotic undertones that seem to surround the story, it is also a little bizarre that a man of science would not be far more sceptical and analytical about the whole situation. Instead he jumps into this world with both feet, playing the part of the princess with aplomb.
I found the whole story a little difficult to get into. The narrative switches constantly between the two worlds, often only one or two paragraphs between each switch. I never felt any real depth in the characters. The author makes a note at the beginning of the novel that he treats writing as a hobby rather than a profession and I believe it shows.
Nonetheless, this is not an entirely negative review. It is an original idea, a daring idea you could venture to say, and approaches the genre from a non-Western perspective, which is refreshing. It would perhaps be better for, and more innocently enjoyed by, a young adult reader but for myself, someone who looks for depth and meaning in fiction, it was not to my liking.
Doctor James has incredible pain daily, as he suffers with intense headaches. He stumbles into a dream world where he is Princess Sarabeth. Hopping between reality and a realistic dream, Doctor James begins an amazing adventure into this princess ’life
I really enjoyed this short read! It kept my interest the entire time. There is action and realistic elements, which I found amusing, that a guy would face if he was a girl. It was very well written, and I felt like the main character was very real and easy to relate with. I hope to read another by this author!! Great book!!
It only took me just a day to read this book and it was an exhilarating experience. D-Nine: Protectors of the Crown is a very entertaining read. Dr. James was having this terrible headache and when he closed his eyes, everything faded. He soon woke up in a different timezone, in a different era like the Dark Ages, and he was being taken care of. Except, he became a she. As it turned out in this other world, Dr. James became Princess Sarabeth and her life was in danger. And when she woke up again, she went back to being Dr. James, who has a brain tumor. Fascinating, isn't it?
This is my first time reading a book that gives you the best of both world - the present world that may be vicious but modernized and the Kingdom realm where life was plain and simple but was in the middle of a war. The author, Magus Tor is a great storyteller. He was able to weave a character that can be loved by anyone, a character that has learned what it was like to be in another's body and stir feelings for the opposite sex. Magus Tor may have had his crazy imaginations put into writing, but for me, his crazy imagination is what makes me happy and entertained. So here's an easy 5 stars for the author and the story!
I picked D-Nine up after reading a review that suggested this book represented a non-binary protagonist: the male main character is knocked out and wakes up in another universe as a female character and is forced to live in each world as, respectively, both a man and a woman. After reading it, I can't recommend this book to people hoping for a nuanced exploration of gender identity in a fantasy setting. While the protagonist is forced to live as a sixteen year-old girl, he never really seems to adapt to life as a woman, and there's quite a bit of stereotyping in the way he represents women and girls. The author also skirts the issue of how life as a woman might impact the protagonist's sexuality. A lot of these problems could have been resolved by the resolution of the novella, but the author went with a choose-your-own-ending scenario that placed responsibility for the protagonist's choices in the lap of the reader.

This really cool novel follows the story of James khoo; a doctor who is seriously ill and plagued with extreme headaches. One day he wakes to find himself in an unusual room with a sort of medieval feel to it. He thinks that he is having a dream; however, it turns out to be quite real. To make matters worse he also realizes that he is no longer a man. Stuck in the body of a princess; James must avoid certain death and as he drifts between these two realities, his sanity is questioned. This is a very good book that is really fun to read and even funny in places. A well thought plot that has been cleverly crafted. I love the author’s style in this fantasy/ thriller, this really makes for an awesome read. I highly recommend this book and I will most certainly be looking for more by this author.
Mixing two worlds in a fascinating story, Magus Tor describes everything and more as you would imagine it. For me, it made me LIVE the entire story as if I were the main character. Doctor James – the main character – has a headache and during one of his seizures is being transported into another world – a fictional place, very real to him, that is placed in another period of time, something like the Old Times or the Dark Ages, as some would call it. The only thing that doesn’t fit for him is that he is no longer a ‘he’ – he became a ’she’. Princess Sarabeth is a beautiful woman with royal genes caught in a lot of action. It makes you dream, it makes you want to live it too (at least the part where you can live into another time and place) and it makes you want to really meet the people inside the story. In the end, I really wanted to see the story continue with Princess Sarabeth.

This is a very interesting experiment, and I advise anyone reading it to try to work out just how James and Princess Sarabeth can both be real. I assure you they are and in the end you will, like me, admire the author’s imagination in coming up with the plot of this tale. It’s great fun with many action sequences and the clever moral dilemma that you are invited to help the joint hero/heroine solve. You will not lose interest once you start reading it.

Initially, I wasn't impressed with the way the story unfolds for the first 1-3 chapters. However, from chapter 4 onwards, the story unfolds quickly and surprisingly takes readers through unexpected twists. In gist, readers find themselves thrown into 2 different worlds; modern vs medieval and ultimately have to sacrifice one of the characters that they have grown to love. It puts one at a moral dilemna. I am thankful this is not a choice I really have to make!
What is interesting about the book is that readers get a choice to choose how they want the book to end.
A very good read! A book that lures me on and make me finish it in less than a day of dedicated reading! Really like how the story unfolds and the creative endings!! love the language and great storyline
intriguing, a mix of fantasy and real-time events , princess lover. For action lover, and fight scenes lover...fast read to distress...Highly recommended !
