Sebastian Fitzek was born in Berlin in 1971. After going to law school and being promoted to LL.D., he decided against a juridical profession for a creative occupation in the media. After the traineeship at a private radio station he switched to the competition as head of entertainment and became chief editor later on, thereafter becoming an independent executive consultant and format developer for numerous media companies in Europe. He lives in Berlin and is currently working in the programme management of a major capital radio station.
As a young man, Leon Nader suffered from insomnia. As a sleepwalker, he even turned to violence during his nocturnal excursions and had psychiatric treatment for his condition. Eventually, he was convinced he had been cured—but one day, years later, Leon’s wife disappears from their apartment under mysterious circumstances. Could it be that his illness has broken out again?
In order to find out how he behaves in his sleep, Leon fits a movement activated camera to his forehead—and when he looks at the video the next morning he makes a discovery that bursts the borders of his imagination. His nocturnal personality goes through a door that is totally unknown to him and descends into the darkness . . .
While this is a republication of a book originally published in 2011, I feel it has made a comeback at an extremely relevant time. This whole blurred reality between waking and sleeping theme seems to be all the rage in the upcoming psychological thrillers of the season, and for good reason; it’s a new spin on a consistent structure that allows for the author to take liberties where otherwise wouldn’t be an option. These type of books always mess with my head, as I never know whether it will stick to the traditional rules of the genre or branch out into the supernatural. You’ll have to read this one to find out for yourself just how it turns out, but needless to say it was a suspenseful, eery read that left me uber creeped out.
When I first found this one on NetGalley I was immediately drawn in by the cover. The color is gorgeous and the inception-like graphics had me wondering just what this story would end up being. I also felt for the most part nothing important was lost in the translation; this was originally written in German but flowed quite nicely in English as well. I was all set to give this book a solid 4 stars; it gave me all the creepy crawlies and had me holding my breath at all the right places, but the ending was a bit off for me. I think, as other reviewers have stated, that the explanation after what I considered “the ending” was too much and took away from what could have been a powerful finish. I did decide to still round up as this was a really different, intriguing read with a gorgeous cover.
If you are looking for a creepy, slightly different story and love a good thriller that has been translated into your native language (if that language be english), then give this a try. I actually had a really fun time reading this and think it would make an excellent movie. If you’re anything like me, you’ll definitely have a few nights of bizarre dreams while trying to figure out what is reality in this book. I’m very interested in comparing notes with others who read this one; feel free to shoot me a message to chat about it!
*Many thanks to the publisher for providing my copy via NetGalley; it was my pleasure to provide an honest review.
I have read that Sebastian Fitzek, is a German Stephen King, which speaks volumes and I tend to agree!!!
He is a new author for me, but after reading this haunting psychological thriller, I look forward to reading more of his work.
As a horror story, The Nightwalker is… atmospheric… claustrophobic… disorienting… eerie… and contains the perfect amount of gore.
The author turns up the volume with his adrenaline charged writing. The prose is razor-sharp and graphic, adding to its ominous undercurrent, which kept my curiosity piqued.
At times, I felt my heart beat accelerating in anticipation of the next chapter that collectively culminated into a wickedly clever ending that satisfied.
A must read for those who enjoy feeling the hairs on the back of their neck stand up.
A horror/psycho-thriller by ‘Germany’s Stephen King.’ [Edited 1/28/23]
Our main character, Leon, is a young married man who suffered from insomnia and sleepwalking as a kid. Years ago he had an incident of violence while sleepwalking and had psychiatric treatment for his condition. Now, years later - is it back?
He and his wife are into BDSM. This morning his wife left him – she even had a tooth missing! He has no memory of how this could have happened. But that’s the point of his sleepwalking – he does all kinds of things in his sleep and has no recollection of what he did. He keeps calling and texting his wife, but no response.
So here’s the fascinating, perhaps unique, premise of this book: Leon lives in three different worlds – three different realities – the everyday real world; a dream world, and a sleepwalking world. The three worlds are almost entirely disconnected from each other in his mind.
So, when something happens, what world is he in? There are times when he wakes up and wonders: did my wife really leave me with a tooth missing or did I dream that? Or did I really do that to her? Then he looks around and sees her stuff is gone, so yes, she left. Unless he is dreaming all this. And, just to keep him and the reader on our toes, there are times he dreams he did things while sleepwalking!
That’s just the start. He finds out he lives in an apartment house designed by a weird architect with secret passageways and tunnels connecting floors and rooms, and two-way mirrors that look into the apartments. And right there, down in a dank basement tunnel, is his wife’s cellphone with all his texts and messages on it! So where is she? What’s going on? Or is this all just a nightmare? He rigs up a camera to record what goes on when he falls asleep. He and we see some amazing stuff.
So, certainly a good story with a complex plot. To fully follow all the twists and turns you’d have to read it, or re-read it, with a 3-color highlighter and mark the passages: this must be a dream; this must be real; this must be sleepwalking.
It’s horror but we could still call it a fun read; there’s limited gore and the BDSM stuff is relatively tame.
Sebastian Fitzek (b. 1971) has written 20 or so horror or psycho-thriller books that have sold more than 13 million copies. One site says he is Germany’s best-selling author.

This was one dark, disorienting and trippy read!! I should probably give it 5 stars just for the ingenuity and creativity behind the plot-but unfortunately with all the unreliable narrative, it really made this a bit confusing to read at times, hence the 4 star.
Sleepwalking. Maybe you know of someone who does this? I experienced it once with my nephew when he was young. Traumatized a bit after a fire at his Mother's house, I heard him yelling in the living room, yet he had been sleeping quietly for over an hour. I ran in to see what was going on and he came running towards me saying we need to get out of the house because there's a fire! I was able to walk him back to the couch where he laid down again. To this day he doesn't remember it ever happening or talking with me.
So what else can happen when you sleep walk? You can hold conversations, move things, change clothes...but can you hurt someone? And if so, can you really not remember any of it?
This is a story that will take you on a journey into this world of the unknown, focusing on a young married couple Leon and Natalie. Leon wakes up to discover Natalie is gone, and there are clues in the house that indicate she might have come to some harm. As Leon tries to unravel these clues, you are pulled along with him, trying to decipher what's real and what's imaginary. It can't all be real, can it? This is where the lines get blurred and the disorientation starts as you try to figure out which version of living is the real one versus his nightwalking...
The ending was a nice surprise twist that I didn't see coming, and happy that it wasn't something that I was supposed to have noticed. It was all cleverly weaved into the fabric of the story so when it all came out it was really brilliant.
An interesting and unique read for sure-I will definitely give this author another go around!!
Mein erster Fitzek.
¿Qué sucede a nuestro alrededor?
Sondern sagen, man habe vermutlich Burnout. Okay. Okay. Cool. Cool. Cool.
Keine weiteren Fragen, euer Ehren.
A strange and disorienting read that put me in mind of existential novels like Sartre's 'Nausea' and Kafka's 'The Trial'. The unreliability of the narrator is compounded by the fact that he does not know if he is awake or dreamwalking, and when experiencing the act of waking if he is actually waking or shifting from one dream state to another. The effect of this is confusing for the reader but also serves to make it a compelling page turner.
Without giving too much away, the best ending to the book, for me, is a few chapters from the actual end. The narrative goes beyond this point though to a section headed "some time later". This section is an extended explanation which, while making sense, was somewhat of an anti-climax and not really necessary – not for this reader.
I would have given five stars, if not for that extended ending.
With a dark brown, almost black oval body, with very thin antennas waving this way and that way, the cockroach inches closer to Leon's open mouth while he sleeps.
Leon opens his eyes and sees the cockroach approaching, but he is paralyzed with fear. In his mind, he is screaming for his wife, Natalie, to help him... but she doesn't answer. A long moment later, he is able to move again and realizes it was just a dream .... wasn't it?
Leon looks around and finds his wife packing a suitcase, and he is surprised. They've only been married 3 years .... and as she turns around, he sees the bruises on her face, the slash marks on her arms, the torn out fingernail. She says she has to go, grabs her suitcase and runs out the door. He is still dreaming, isn't he? Or is this reality?
As a child, Leon suffered from insomnia. His foster parents once found him standing over their other son with a knife held up as though ready to strike. The next morning he was returned to the home.
Another foster family took him in and sought psychiatric treatment for his condition. Eventually he felt he was cured. And now it's back again, isn't it?
This is a psychological thriller that finds an insomniac blending his waking hours into his sleeping hours. And now it's so bad, he can't tell when he's asleep and when he's awake. One thing he knows is that he can't remember anything from his sleeping time.
Leon is desperate enough to make major changes in order to determine what's real and what's not. Is that really a door behind the dresser? Or is is there only when he's sleepwalking? The maze that takes him to other people's apartments?
People die ... did he resort to violence while sleepwalking? Or was he awake?
Millions of people suffer from insomnia..and some of them walk in their sleep ... eat in their sleep ... can carry on complete conversations... and yet never remember what went on. It's only during waking hours that an insomniac may see something out of whack, something moved, something missing, something new they've never seen before.
This book is about Leon Nader... a man who thinks he might be going crazy. He can't tell the difference between waking and sleeping .. or the area in between.
As the readers follow along, reality blurs into fiction. There are so many twists and turns, the reader loses his/her own sense of reality.
This is a well-written psychological thriller. There is a major twist at the end that you never see coming!
Many thanks to the author / Pegasus Books / Netgalley who provided a digital copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Do you see that door, there in the wall? Only a ghost can hear its call. Behind the door lies a hiding place. But don't go through. Run far, far away. Ignore this warning and it won't be long before You lose yourself behind the door. He who crosses the threshold at night Can never go back, try as hard as he might.
O dear! I feel my brain has been put in a washing machine and now is hanging to dry.
Leon Nader who has a history of sleepwalking wakes up one morning after a ghastly nightmare to find his beaten and bruised wife leave him without a word. She is gone, disappeared without a trace. No one, not even her close friend and colleague has seen her.
And thus his real nightmare begins. Has he been sleepwalking again? And has he become violent towards his wife? Can he figure out what is real and what is not? Can he tell the difference between dream and reality?
The first 150 pages of this one were so damn creepy and I was completely sucked into the story but the ending (or more like the epilogue) *really* ruined things for me. I feel like the stories are always super unique and well thought out and then it's always the same ending. I wish I would find a thriller I really love soon, it's getting annoying.
This is one of the weirdest books I've ever read. This guy never knows when he's awake or when he's sleep walking. It's a terrifying story that starts to creep you out a bit. Has you constantly questioning what is really happening & how it's going to end.
This is a brain bender of a novel- one I purchased after reading a list of best psychological thrillers and it messes with your head big time in a great way.
Surreal and insidiously creepy I devoured it in a couple of sittings. The ending is cleverly compelling and the journey there is addictively horrifying. Loved it.
Leon has suffered on and off from sleepwalking since his parents died when he was a child. After a violent episode while sleepwalking, he's started seeing a psychiatrist to help him stop. Through work with the psychiatrist, the sleepwalking incidents have stopped. Now, as an adult, he wakes up to find his wife Natalie badly beaten and packing a suitcase so she can flee their apartment. With no answers, he's worried that he's been sleepwalking again, and that her injuries are his fault. He decides to invest in a motion activated camera that he can wear to bed that will show him what happens at night. This sets off a whole chain of discoveries...
This book was SO trippy. Oh my gosh. There are so many moments where it's hard to tell if Leon is sleeping or awake, because he himself starts to lose a grip on reality. This book was like inception, but creepier. There were definitely moments that gave me goosebumps! I'm glad I didn't read this at night! From the first sentence of the book, I was completely hooked. I love when that happens! Sometimes it takes me a little while to get completely engaged, but that was not the case with The Nightwalker.
There aren't a ton of characters in the book, which was nice because it was easy to keep track of everyone, and it allowed the story to completely focus on Leon and his attempts to uncover what happened to Natalie and what he does while he's asleep. All I can say was, holy crap, that ending. I got the chills! I won't give anything away, but I loved it. I think it leaves some things up to reader interpretation, which can be hit or miss, but in this case, I think it worked perfectly with the rest of the book. I can't wait to chat with people about it!
This is the first book by Fitzek that I've ever read, and I definitely plan to check out more of his work.
The Nightwalker was originally published in German, and is now being published in English. The English version will be released on February 7, 2017, so be sure to check it out! Thank you to Netgalley, Sebastian Fitzek, and Pegasus Books for the opportunity to read this book in advance in exchange for an honest review!
