Hunt down psychotic ex, check. Learn you’re part Fae and unlock crazy new powers as part of the deal, check. Fall in love with your best friend and start a family, check. In the six months since Valeria Trumaine first visited the FaeLands, her life has taken a 180 degree shift. Gone are the days of policing the Extras as a Sentinel, traded for the less dangerous life of working as a security guard for her family’s company. Or so she thought.
When Val’s twin brother Valerian becomes involved in a human murder case, he enlists her help, taking both down an unexpected path that leads to supernatural involvement. And then there are the mysterious accidents plaguing Trumaine properties around the globe. Not to mention a one very pissed off, Thomas Meriwether. The Master Vampire is out for blood for Val’s part in his son’s downfall; his weapon of choice against her, her son David.
Keeping David safe becomes a priority, but doing so in the midst of a hunt for a killer, proves easier said than done. It will take the power of every Trumaine to ensure the family’s continued existence, and even that might not be enough once the Fae get involved.
Ronnie is a mother of two, grandmother of one, auntie to too many to count (her number of siblings is in the double digits).
She’s a card-carrying member of the rainbow mafia and has lived in South Carolina her entire life. She is a Blerd (Black Nerd) that can talk to you for hours about her favorite things, so tread carefully. Once you get her started, you’re in for the long haul.
She cries during movies and tv shows and is a collector of many things.
Her first book, Crimson Dawn, was released in 2011, and her DarkWorld series continues to grow.
In the first book I was barely fond of the protagonist Valeria. I just didn’t care much for her cockiness and attitude. I wanted to believe the del feelings between her and Irulan. But she just seemed mean. Not necessarily mean spirited, but just mean and defensive all the time.
In this book I definitely didn’t feel the bond between Valeria and Irulan although the author told you it was there. But she didn’t do anything to show the deepening. I felt as though Valeria wasn’t nice to Irulan. She was always saying something mean to her when it mattered more for her to show an exception to her “mated” wife. There were no scenes of intimacy shared between them to strengthen the bond. She seemed to care more about her son with a ruthlessness and soft touch than she did to Irulan. I think she deserved a better “mate.” This relationship just isn’t working for me.
One other thing…these battles go on for far too long. It seems it is the only basis for the story. I almost don’t want to read the next book. As much as I love the writing style; I am just not into the characters as much. I am not invested in their outcomes. The only one worthy of any emotional investment is Irulan.
I want to know more about this Carrie woman. Irulan’s reaction to her is very questionable. What does that mean for Valeria. I know they’re mated, but does the supersede everything else. One would believe it. But with how they don’t really seem close to me, does that leave a crack open for Carrie to slip in and challenge the bond? And I want to see Irulan stop being an easy pawn for her cousin Fazion.
I am also tired of this David story already. It seems so obsessive, Valeria’s love for him. Weird. She’s doesn’t seem that obsessive about her mate.
The first book set the genie up as the villain but for some reason the author used this book to introduce new, unrelated issues with almost no mention of what happened in the first book. If it weren't for the characters being the same this could have been a whole new series start.
Th first book was great and this one is even better. I really love how the vampires 🧛♀️ and fae fight together and of course the cliffhanger at the end. Well off to get book 3. Highly recommend the series, the world building is great.
Valeria is a hero you will love or hate. She is impetuous, fiercely protective of her family and prone to violence. She and her mate Irulan are saving the world and themselves. This book is fast paced action from start to finish.
